    Smile Thought of the day...

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental
To reach out for another is to risk involvement
To express feelings is to risk exposing your true self

To place your ideas, your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss
To love is to risk not being loved in return
To live is to risk dying
To try is to risk failure

But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing
The person who asks nothing, does nothing, has nothing and is nothing
They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live
Chained by their attitudes, they are a slave, they have forfeited their freedom

Only a person who risks.. is FREE!!

    Lightbulb Good call.

Had several cards that had the same sort of concept written in them. Although its a much harder thing to put into context and part of life. I've really had to start doing some of these things, not out of choice, but out of necessity. I think that before my accident I became a bit too comfortable with living within my comfort zone. However that got blown apart and I don't even know yet what my comfort zone is at the moment. I know the lady that lives next door does not come outside, she is in an electric wheelchair, I don't know her name, nor why she is disabled. Apparently there are people like her all over the world, that disappear from society to remain in their small comfort zone and/or to give up. I find it ironic now that many physically able people are limited by what is between their ears, as for now I have to push myself often, which I hope in time will become normal and part of my comfort zone. But I'd rather do so now than give up, although its often not easy, its usually enjoyable.

Good on ya John!! You've been an inspiration to many on here!!

Our mind & our will are incredibly powerful tools!! Both of which I am committed to continue sharpening!! It takes courage & balls to step out of ya comfort zone.. & push yaself.. but I'd go that way, anyday!!! Bugger living with blinkers on, in a stagnating stodgy self imposed cage!!!

I know what you mean. After my accident I now value my life a lot more. It doesn't matter that I can't do some of the things I used to enjoy doing, what matters is that I can still enjoy life.

People have asked me if I changed at all after my accident. The answer is yes. I've become more out going. In the last 2 months I've done many things that I had been procrastinating about for years! Some of them have panned out and some have crashed and burned! (Apparently your physiotherapist cannot go on a date with you because that would be unprofessional)

Giving up is a weak and easy option! If you never ever break out of your comfort zone how can you ever say you are actually alive? Anyone who has done something completely against their nature, eg a shy, introverted person starts a conversation with a complete stranger while at a party, will know what I'm talking about.

This is true about risk, however risk should be calculated.

One of my favourite sayings is:

"The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese"
"No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does."

Never asked any of the staff out at Burwood as a couple of times while I was working as a staff nurse in mental health I had a couple of the patients do the same to me. I not only had to say that it would unprofessional to do so but also pointed out how unwell they must be. Kinda lightens a difficult situation, but health professionals can be both sacked and loose their ability to practice, if found to be having a relationship with a patient.
I'm now starting to get more motivated. I've never liked Basketball, however I've just found that a Wheelchair Basketball league is trying to be started here in New Plymouth. If it gets me into something, I'm having a crack at it and I cannot say I do not like something until I've had a go (within reasons). I am also told that if the Basketball goes well, then a Wheelchair Rugby league might be possible, later on down the line and thats what I'd really like a crack at.

I like the thoughts. Just a little hesitant about taking risks.

Living a useful fulfilled life is a balance between accepting responsibility and trying things which are outside our comfort zone. But the key word is balance.

If you support a family and life is a bit dull, you may very well want to take a risk and try security work in Iraq. However for many families that would be an irresponsible act, exciting as the risk and money might be. Being dead isn't a great outcome for your family.

So I'm all in favour of taking risks - that's what is exciting about motorcycling - but the level of risk must be tempered by our responsibilities to others.

    Bit if a buggar really.

It still sucks though. She didn't actually say no though...she did leave the door open halfway you might say. Perhaps I should just barge through it

If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?
