An interesting few days....
Got home on Friday from a 2 week holiday during which time Botany Honda sold my SV650S. Great, as this meant I was able to pick up my "new" Philip Island demo GSX-R600 K6 on Saturday.
That afternoon I did the Kaiaua/Hunua Loop with Ninjaboy. After the VTR250 and SV650S, both great learners bikes the GSX-R600 is an awesome ride. Amazing handling, lots of power (for me anyway) delivered very smoothly, and not really peaky as I found the CBR600RR. Brakes are very strong, with good feel. Makes an awesome noise and so far I've only had it up to 11,000rpm or so. The K6's have a lower seat, probably the lowest sportsbike around, and that makes the bike much easier to handle parking and pushing for shorties like me. Riding position is very comfortable with no sore wrists or neck/back or legs, actually more comfortable than I was on my SV650S. Overall, I feel far more confident riding this bike, even in damp and gravelly conditions.
This morning I went out to Maraetai to take some photos then off to Shell Westgate to meet 6 other Kiwibikers. Had an good ride up to Mangawhai for a late lunch then came back the same way. Just north of Kaukapakapa(?) I get zapped by radar (while overtaking a Legacy wagon) at 145km/h. Apart from not budging from the 145km/h, ie knocking it down to 140, the cop was very nice. Showed me their radar equipment and zapped a few cars and bikes with me in the car - point was that we didn't stand a chance! So to end my great weekend I have a $510 fine, 50 more points ( prior to January I had none in 20 years! ) and a suspended licence for 28 days effective immediately. Cop calls for a towie for me as there's no cellphone coverage.
So heed those warnings about about SH16 guys!!
I attempt walking to higher ground, got a text off to one of the others, but unable to ring anyone else. 20 mins later two of our group arrive on one bike, one to pillion me back to Kaukapakapa and the other to ride my bike back. Had to wait for the towie to arrive or the cop to come back just so they know that I didn't ride home, and to pay the towie for the callout. So we get back to Kaukapapa, where one of the others had gone home and been pillioned back so we had enough "licensed" riders for bikes. To make a long story short, the guys went well out of their way to help me out. I'd mention names but they may not want to be associated with this event!!
So thanks waiting around, and for the ride home guys!!
So now I have a 29 hour old GSX-R600, that I can't ride for 28 days...... ( Looking at the bright side, at least I didn't bin it.....)
Anyone know about applying for license to get to work and back?
