Unhappy It's official! I'm a mutant! XS helmet too big!

Him indoors has been getting all his motorbike gear sorted recently including getting a new helmet. I was present when the salesman was discussing how snug a helmet should be when you buy it. I thought to myself: "Shit! My helmet is really quite loose...I think I better get me a new one too!", no it was nothing to do with the cool new helmet him indoors had just purchased...okay maybe a little bit of lid envy.

So I began trying on and chatting with the sales people and nope, nope, nah, no way, that's yuk lookin' and naaaa. So they got me in a XS HJC (can't recall which specific one, it was pretty and had sparkles and flowers!) and it's still too loose! I also tried an AGV and that was worse but he's ordering me in something else - I think it was an LS2 or possibly a more expensive AGV.

Anyone else got a mega pin head? What did ya get?

My current helmet is a medium and it made me reflect that I was possibly given poor advice on helmet size & fitting originally by the first salesperson I bought a helmet from.

I've actually had the same issue (being mutant that is) with getting proper motorbike boots, I have size 8 feet but pretty meaty calves (bein' a true blue Southern lass). So I've given up and just wear my Docs.

Oh yeah - what were we advised by the sales people regarding helmet fit? It should be very snug and you shouldn't be able to move it up and down or side to side a lot when you grab it at the front.

    Yep that sounds right.
Nice and tight and your face looks like a guppy all squashed up by the cheek pads.

I am having a mission trying to find a helmet small enough for my daughter. She is only 5 though. Kids road helmets are pretty tricky things to find.

Good luck with the new lid though!

Shoei used to make a real small size.It was even to tight for my 10 year old son.

My wife had a similar problem. We ended up getting a HJC youth large size. The guys at motomail ordered it in for us.

OMG!!! You are truly odd, Ms P!
I also have a small noggin...I have an HJC xs flip front..it is perfect for me. The trouble I had was getting a bike shop to get a selection of XS helmets in for me to try on...most shops just didn't want to know me!
You could try growing your hair...my helmet gets to tight when I am in need of a haircut!

Yep tried that too! I managed to squish into the youth one but it wasn't right.

Thanks Tarty Flip top eh...might ask him about that, he's been okay about getting some in so far...mind you has only had to get 1! I was very surprised it didn't fit.

As far as growing my hair, no thanks! I fiiiiinally found a style that I like and can even look passable with helmet hair!

Yeah, I was kinds trying to avoid paying Shoei prices but might have to bite the bullet. After all, my head does kinda come in useful at times.

You and Hitcher should start a club for the Cranially Challenged.

Be carefull with the model of HJC helmet. Some of them have a terrible 1 or 2 star SHARP safety rating. I would recommend checking any helmet you think thinking about buying on SHARP safety web site. I'd aim to get a helmet with a 4 or 5 star safety rating (assuming it is for road use).

I used to have a HJC youth xs helmet, but found at above about 80km it would push into my face and squish my nose, so I crashed that and got a different model HJC in an XS that fits ok (well, ok enough for a bucket helmet) but I found a perfect fit in a certain model Arai XS. Found the Shoei and several other brand XS still too big, so have to wonder if the shape of the helmet also effects the sizing fit. Go figure.

Seriously, dude, SHARP is but one testing authority out there and it is NOT an approved standards body. It is also a Government organisation in a country actively trying to ban motorcycling.

I would give it no more than a cursory glance. The most important thing about any helmet is how it fits your head. It doesn't matter how it rates in some arbitrary scoring system if it doesn't fit your head shape perfectly.

Let me qualify my own post - get a good fitting helmet first (as that is crucial), and if it comes down to a choice between a couple I'd take the one with the higher SHARP safety rating.

I'd go for a good fit and then get the cheapest. It still passed the NZ standard or it can't be sold here.

Try the Shark s800's. They have a girly design and I think small is smaller then HJC xs.
