Even better then we hoped, Trail ride update

Okay Dirt riders, bit of an update for you all,,

spent the day out today helping mark out this cool ride for you all.

Its going to be bigger and better than last year , the local farmers have really got it sorted, today 10 farms were marked out and will be joined on the day !! the biggest Farm was over 1000 acres, we spent about 4 hours just on that one, the riding is going to be great something for everyone, some very hard pro loops (Red arrows), must be about 50 ks of trail rides, great views from the top of the ranges, some bloody awesome natural jumps,, so much air...

Please get out and support this ride, so much effort and planning has gone into it, you will get dam good value for your money..

Thanks to the Local Farmers for once again getting behind this project and Counties Honda for sponsership of the event(and lending me a brand new CRF250X) to get around today, I had a ball testing the tracks....

So how many of you made it out there? I went out there with a mate, and we had a fantastic day out riding. Missed the briefing as we were running a little late (even daylight saving didnt help us enough get there on time in the end), and didnt spot you there FireFight - was going to wander up and say hi. The ride was great tho, lots of open farmland, would have liked to see a bit more trails through the bush, and had a fair bit of trouble with the dust, but otherwise it was brilliant. Looked like a pretty good turnout (anyone know how many people turned up?), and there was a wide range of bikes and riders there giving it a go.

Unfortunately the guy I was riding with had forgotten his gloves, and we had a chat before heading out about what to do, he figured he'd tough it out - how much gorse could there be? As it turns out, very little - but that didnt stop him from missing a right hander and launching himself into what little we could find. He also wore the skin off the inside of his thumbs (the trail proved to be a bit longer and rougher that what we were expecting), so after the first run he went off and got himself taped up by the guys at the fire truck.

On the second loop we stopped and chatted to a guy that had smashed the rear suspension on his CR, bad enough that the rear spring had fallen out - he had to walk back down the trail to pick it up! Then when he went back to pick up the bike with his 4x4 he managed to get that stuck in the mud by the side of an irrigation pond. Saw him back at the car park later on, with the bike now on the trailer looking like some kind of frankenstein dragbike/lowrider. The rear wheel was right up inside the guard . . . but he still managed to laugh about it all - good on ya mate.

Also saw a guy on the side of the trail that looked like he'd knocked his head on a boulder, his bike had gone under a fence and he looked like he was just waking up when we went past. Had plenty of helpers and rubber neckers already so we didnt stop and add to the confusion, hope he was ok tho. Saw a few near misses with guys doing dodgy passing, but with the dust and amount of slower riders out there it was kind of to be expected I guess - there were times when you had to "go for it" round the outside of someone and take your chances. Did see some taking chances I wouldnt have felt comfy with tho! Quite often it was easier just to pull off the trail for a bit and let the others get ahead for a while, just so the dust had chance to settle so you could see where you were going again. Had a few times when I was just following a faint outline in the dust of the rider in front, hoping like hell he knew where he was going!

The hill climbs and descents were the worst for that, you couldnt stop, had to keep going, and the trails were pretty rough at times which made for some interesting riding! Nothing like riding a two stroke in powerband at pace up a steep and heavily rutted incline when you cant see the trail you are riding on. Really gets the adrenaline pumping . . . but if you manage to ride it out to the top you get a grin that'd threaten to split the top of your head off.

By now all the road riders will be wondering why the fk we'd put ourselves thru all this, but man, what an amazing day. In the end we ran out of time and fuel, so had to call it quits, but that was one of the best trail rides I've been on. I got home completely knackered but grinning from ear to ear. Also met a guy on a gas gas that had read on KB about my dramas getting the bike running again, sorry mate, didnt get your name but it was good chatting to ya. Glad that there are people out there that got a laugh out of my experience anyway, even I can see the lighter side of it all now that my bikes up and running again!

If they run this event again next year, I'm gonna be there for sure, I'm still buzzing from it now.

    Re the ride

Glad you had a good time WRT, and thanks for the feed back, it was a bloody big job sorting it, and hard to please everyone, was a pretty fast track, and that caught a few out, couple transported to Hospital, but all in all a good day, think it was about 49ks total if you rode the whole trail, Numbers were a bit down on last year, I think about 350 turned up.

about 50 mins was the time the good riders were getting round the whole course, was one of the better rides I have been involved in, the whole commnuity got right behind it, few people thought it was too long(can't please everyone) and yes a bit more bush would have been nice, maybe nextyear, will pass on your commnets. oh, btw I had to work Sunday and could not make the ride..

Ah bugger, shame you werent there. We all commented tho about how it seemed further than 30k's as originally mentioned - I was getting nervous about fuel on the first run! We were took a bit over an hour on the first loop, which included going round in a circle at one point - whoops. We were going a bit quicker in the afternoon, but made a lot of stops to let the dust die down when we caught up to others (more traffic and dust than there was in the morning), and also stopped to talk to the guy that got his 4x4 stuck so it would have taken us a while to get around. Did see one guy that was by himself riding a honda that flew past me like I was standing still. Dont get me wrong, I'm not an overly fast rider (I like to stay on the bike if its at all possible), but fk me this guy was moving. Was mighty impressive actually . . . he was the stand out rider of the day for me. Saw plenty of others that were going quick, but no others that looked as quick or as in control as this guy.

As you said, you cant please everyone. However, from my view point, it was a great ride, well done to those that organised it. Sure, some more bush terrain and a couple of stream crossings would have been nice, but I had such a good time regardless that I'm not going to complain! I did get a bit worried at first about making it back on one tank of gas, but I really enjoyed the ride being so long, meant you covered a lot of variation and it kept you interested. Great stuff. Plus there were enough jumps and open fast areas to keep you on your toes.

Sorry to hear that a few got sent off to hospital, but there were a few traps for those that werent paying attention. And there were quite a few that were pushing it along harder than they should of, so I'm not overly surprised there were a few casualties. IMO, its more a reflection on the rider than the trail though.

Hopefully it was worthwhile enough for the organisers to put it on again next year, I rated it highly. One of the best days out riding I've had.

speaking of water crossing, have you ever done the DOC track at Maratoto ?, its close enuff the Aks, and if you wanna practice crossing rivers, thats the ride for you.

Never been there - where is Maratoto? Do you need to have special permission from DOC to use it?

    I was there.Not a bad day to F@#$%& Dusty!!!!
I did one lap and I was stuffed as my forks were totally shit! I managed to get out for a second lap until I came across a fallen rider already reciveing help but I stopped and slowed down the on coming traffic as it was down a fast gravel section (just before the H sign). I spent about one hour slowing traffic and helping out at the crash scene before I finally got home. I was totally stuffed when I got back as I had done 2 laps of the bloody track. By the way that was why the closed down the track as that kid had a bad fall and couldn't be moved and the paramedics couldn't reach him easy.
    What a day.
