Biker friendly mesh barrier installed in Durham

I wondered if you have anything like this in NZ?

'A new type of crash barrier is being trialled in County Durham, UK. The Biker-Safe system is being fitted to a stretch of the A689 at Killhope.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "Normal roadside barriers are designed to retain cars, vans and trucks, but can be deadly for motorcyclists who collide with them. Biker-Safe has been designed to address the problem.”

"A containment mesh is fitted to the lower section of the barrier to absorb the energy of the rider during impact. This ensures they do not strike the barrier support upright, which is one of the main causes of serious or fatal injuries." '

I hope this proves sucessfull (and doesn't end up killing some other type of road user). This seems like a real solution to the cheese cutter.

Looks like it is great for covering Armco. But would it work on cheesecutters? No top rail to which to affix it.

Which means that in all probability, it will not be used here in NZ.

The reasoning being that the LTNZ ( or whatever they call themselves now) do not want toi spend money on road safety for what is a minority of this countries road users. Especially when they can spend it on measures that will cement their own position more firmly in the beaurocracy that is government departments.

Maaate ANYTHING is better than the chees cutter, including nothing at all except white paint!

Mates of mine in the UK are over the moon with this trial, if it works NZ should adopt the system.

It looks like it could even be added to the cheese cutters we have now (the way it looks) to lessen the chance of being decapitated, shredded, and generally diced, as simple as stretching some high quality nylon netting accross the supports!

I'm sure people believe you, but links are handy so we can actually see what these things look like, and to find out more info about them.

I have NO intentions of being the test dummy, none at all.

But anything that makes them damn cables less dangerous to us the better, surely
