Motorcyclists are not prepared to accept being singled out for huge ACC levy increases through their registrations. No other motorist should either. The pool of funds is everyone’s resource, supposedly without favour. If this goes through, all you people with a (eg ) turbo fitted car will be next. Or a V8. Or any GT model. Or white Corollas. Because all of them feature highly in accident stats.
Statistics abound on motorcycle figures, some true, some absolute lies. Some are misquoted: - 16x more likely to have an accident? No, that’s 16x more likely to be injured. Car drivers are subsidising motorcyclists by $77 each? No, the figure is actually $16.61. And most licence-holding bikers also own cars, so we pay twice.
Motorcycle injury claims cost $62M in 2008? Sort of. It includes all claims still being paid from previous years. But the fully-funded model says that all claims prior to 2008 have been covered by levies collected prior to 2008! The 1336 new claims in 2008 come out at $26M. Only $12M received from levies? Registration stats suggest this should read $19M. So, ACC’s claimed shortfall of $50M is actually closer to $7M. ACC are trying to con everyone!!
I have discovered that any injury accident involving a motorised vehicle is covered by the motor pool fund. Here is where it gets interesting: - the average cost of injury treatment (initial and ongoing) is $24,434 car, $19,704 motorcycle, $21,967 pedestrian, $22,174 cyclist. Yes, cyclists and pedestrians are covered, as it should be under a No-Fault system, but where’s their contribution if User Pays is what we are to have? They must pay too. Or stay off the road environs.
Speaking of user pays, I have operated motorcycles and cars for 36 years. I have had one accident in that time and it was on a bike (my fault). Injury was minimal and, being in 1974, it was just before ACC came in. I learned a valuable lesson in paying attention! Unlike 42% of motorcycle/car crashes, I have been lucky, or skillful enough, to avoid car drivers’ lack of attention too. So I have a long history of not crashing and being hurt, where’s my No Claims Bonus? Incidentally, I have owned 7 of the worst size (ACC says) of motorcycle and most of my riding mates are much the same. Proof that the rider, not the bike, is the problem, statistics-wise.
