New Riders Day Out 2 - Auckland - March 5th

    New Riders Day Out 2
    March 5th

    Evening folks...

As shown by the previous day out, and the success of similar ventures in Wellington, Gremlin and I have decided to host another day out for new riders.

Should be a good laugh... chance to get to know some more KBers both new and old, and have a nice easy paced ride in the country.

Calender event if you wish to register is here

Ride leaving Westgate Shell Station - Meet at 10:30, leave 11.

Update - Recon ride on Saturday 4th March to get to know route / check for any hazards, pace will be medium... all welcome but no absolute beginners please... sign up here

Yes, the famous two are at it again.

I'm currently sorting out a route, Wellsford is in mind, but I need to make a loop, and potentially finish where we started. If the ride is to Wellsford, I will also need a few more pointers.

This will run in the same format again, but with the odd tweak to correct a few mistakes. Besides the learners, we will need instructors to help the learners skills, group leaders who are very familiar with the route, and pointers for turns.

And I will need my pretty haz vest again tristan

    Route Details

Right, I have done a few rides, and done the route.

We will leave Westgate, go along 16 until Old North Rd. Then right into Peak Rd, then right onto 16 again to Kaukapakapa. From there, up 16 to Wellsford. Stops will be Kaukapakapa, just after the railway lines, on the right hand bend, and the Scenic Lookout just before Wellsford.

Coming back, the route will simply be reversed, but heading back, we won't stop at the Lookout since its too soon after Wellsford. Stopping again at Westgate to finish the ride, and final thanks as usual etc.

Still trying to build the map... its taking ages. Leaving time still to be decided, need to talk to Weasel first.

One of the more common and fairly easy rides we do is as you describe. Meet at Shell Westgate, up Hwy 16, turn right onto Old North Rd, right onto Peak Rd and right again back onto Hwy 16 to Wellsford.

I would avoid Hwy 1 for the return and just come back the same way. You should only need markers at the turn offs onto Old North Rd, Peak Rd and back onto Hwy 16 with strict instructions that unless told otherwise people do not turn off anywhere.

The road is a nice mixture of tighter turns, long straights and nice sweepers.

Quite a long ride to Wellsford and return for a new newbie but for a group with some experience it should be a doddle.

    Good luck and have fun!

Old north road to Hellensville is a nice ride then from Hellensville noth to Wellsford is quite a long ride I think you should maybee look at doing SH1 back to Albany then the River Head Coatsville road backto just south of Kumeue then its just a left back on the main road back to Westgate this avoids doing a repetitive backtrack ride my $0.02 Oh and as always Im Happy to lend a helping hand doing what ever Weasel and Gremlin please pm me if you need me to show you the route -ZRXER

This is MY road --well erum I ride it a lot.
could I suggest keeping it really simple for the newbee riders-
Much as i love old north and peak road theres a couple of bits Im not comfortable suggesting as being Newbee stuff.
My suggestiong is to stay on SH16 all the way up. Regroup at Shell Helensville then again breifly at Kaukop and at the lookout. before hitting wellsford.
For those keen to carry on--the Mangawhai road is just loverly.
On the way back retrace your steps but this time loop onto peak and old north -Dunno why but the hazzards dont seem as accute on the return trip
I covered this route on wendsday --The road is clean and clear.
Hazards are-2 one way bridges on old north.
3km into old north-hsn end there is a left hander that is EXTREMELY cut up bu the logging trucks-itll throw a newbee not ready for it.
30km/h blind uphill right hander half way from Kaukop to wellsford
2 small patches of peagravelled roadworks--clearly marked so no real concern.
Also The HP have a dark blue commodore? mufty car lurking up 16
if you carry on to mangawhai only 1 real danger spot --1/2 way to mangawhai theres a clearly marked 35km/h corner--its a downhill tightening left hander --clearly marked with a SLOW DOWN sighn
Dont ignore the sighn cos that corner is a doozie for catchin bikers out.
To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?

From memory it was a dark blue XR8 that used to be on sh1, but they do cycle these things around though.
