Mrs merv's birthday is coming up

So I thought I better get her another bike.

She finds her DR650 a bit big and heavy on the dirt so bought her a new Yamaha XT250 (they are really the 225) so she can come riding with me on my XR250L and saves her putting undue kms on my WR which I save for the harder stuff (don't want to do top end rebuilds too often).

Plan is to hit the South island after Easter and do a bit of back country stuff.

Good one, She'll find the XT light & great fun for the tight stuff & mud plugging. I have found mine (Serow=XT250) fun.

P.S I've just gone the other way & just got a DR650 from Lemans, which is great on the open stuff. -Not sure how it'll be for serious off roading as it'll be too heavy for me probably & its a minibike now as he had to shrink it for me the shortarse.

The DR650 isn't a bad bike but it is a bit heavy and the gearing is far too high for the tight stuff. When White Trash sold it to us in the first place he made sure it had a smaller gearbox sprocket on it and if we were to do anything more serious with it we would need bigger back sprocket too.

The XT isn't a hard out trail bike like my XR or WR, it has a rather small chain and no chain guide, nor a cross brace on the handlebars, but for her it will be fine I am sure. It is light being about the same weight as the WR and has a nice wide ratio gearbox - even better than the XR250 is in that regard.

I have heard that you want to gear it down one tooth for the road.
Two if you are going to go off road and three if you are going to really go off road. (from std at the front)

We have found that with the XT.
The std chain is fine with the amount of power that the XT puts out.
Maybe just a good "O" ring chain, you will find it hard to get a great selection of sprocket for the XT's.
They are a great little go any where trail bike.
But are far from a race bike.
Ours use to have a chain guide, until someone broke it off. (SDU)
And we put a type of Pro tapers and Bark Busters on it, that I had from an older bike that I use to own.
We want to keep the little beast all though SDU has moved up, because they are such a great little, any one can ride and ride any where bike.

Congrats on the new DR650 SDU, Lemans told me he was going to glue some 4x2 blocks onto the bottem of your boots as it was going to be cheaper than shrinking the bike LOL.Might see you out on a aventure ride sometime

Ta Beemer - yeah Lemans shrunk the bike & got me new clod hoppers but it would be good to catch up with you on a ride - I have to get some time off work first.
