Picton to Oturehua is a 9 to 10 hour ride, and in winter its best done over 2 days.

Most people at the Brass mix and make friends very easily so there is no reccommendation for "best company". If you feel a bit overwhelmed at your first Brass, look for the Chatto Creek MC tent and ask for Malcolm. I'll be somewhere handy and see that you meet a few other KBers down this way.

I'm not aware of a KB group ride, but there will be quite a few KBers onsite to make you welcome.

Wear good thermals for night time, but also bring light weight clothes for the daylight hours. The temperature can be over 20C during the day, yet still freeze or snow overnight.

I'll be there with the RE5 and trying to take the award for "Best Post Classic"

    not sure how many

not sure how many ferry riders there are but what is the best time or ferry to take across early morning or evening? due to people but mainly weather wise. being the straight and how nasty it can get was just hoping there might be a remote chance that some sailing times are better than others.

No, I have done Alex to Picton in just over 8 hours, so another 1 - 2 hours for someone who doesn't know the road should be about right. But being winter time I would strongly suggest that 2 days be allowed for that part of the ride.

When I used to live at Whakamaru (central Waikato) I would leave home on the thursday and catch the evening ferry. On leaving the ferry I would head south to Blenheim for the night. The next day (Friday) I would travel to either Oamaru or Outram (near Dunedin), then head to the rally site on saturday morning.

Remember, the roads may be icy (althought not likely), so plan on travelling a bit slower that you normally would.

I'd agree with Jantars 8-9 hrs from Picton.
We have done Cromwell - Picton (and vice versa) a number of times in the car with the Kids looking at 10 hrs including stops.

Would be keen on doing a Brass monkey run, but it won't be this year.
