    Dogs killed cat....

My dogs killed a cat this morning (4.30am)...
It was on our property (Fully fenced etc)...
But... The dogs didnt bite it at all... I woke up when I heard rustling outside, n the dogs barking... Looked out window to investigate...
Saw both of them (<40kg dogs) ROLLING on something... I yelled at them... (prob woke whole street up)... they stopped n moved then I noticed they were rolling on a cat...

I went flying outside down the back terrace/stairs n round the side of the house... gathered the cat up in a towel... it was still alive at that stage... in shock I would imagine... checked it over... no blood... no puncture marks..

I didnt think it would survive at this stage as it was kinda stiff when I picked it up... took it inside... put into a carry cage with the towel... and placed on the steps by front door (dogs cant get to that area) next to food and water dishes with the door to the cage open (Should it want to go home if it was ok... or to go home to die)...

Got up this morning... cat was not in the cage but on the steps, dead....

Has anyone ever heard of something similar to this??...

We have 3 cats at home, and the dogs get on with them fine... they never chase them... have never hurt them... nothing like that... then... this morning... They rolled on a trespassing cat....and the result was that the cat died... I feel really stink... They have never hurt any other animals before... They are not young dogs... (6 & 8)... and have never done anything like it before.....

Why would they roll on it??!?!.... both at the same time?!?...pack mentality? (I Thought they were play fighting with each other till I saw the cat in the middle!)

If a dog wanted to attack a cat... wouldnt they just grab it?!?!...
Maybe they didnt mean to hurt the cat and just wanted to play?? *shrug*...

    Cool

Now you have the hard task of finding the cat's owner.

Can I suggest you ring up the SPCA or your local vet and ask if they have ever heard of this happening before.... Cos I know that Haven't.

It could well be the 'pack' thing.

But someone out there is going to be missing a cat this morning.....
and they will want to bury this cat.

Maybe do a letter drop in your local area re finding the cat..

    Good luck.......

Likely the cat was hit by a car and managed to get to your place before dying. When a dog kills it is usually ripping and shaking (esp with cats) so there'd be injuries if your dogs did it I reckon. The dogs roll on it coz of the smell. Cats have a strong (to dogs) smell.
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

Had a very old lab with about 2 teeth left in his head - sucked a cat to death once. Came home and found this very dead, very slobbery cat in the driveway.

Maybe the cat was already dieing and ya dogs were doing CPR?

Don't ring the SCPA or try to find the owners. This may just end up backfiring in this dog hating country.

It's perfectly natural for a dog to kill a cat. It's a food chain thing.

My Chihuahua has no teeth but managed to kill a Rottweiler. He got stuck in it's throat.

Sounds like the cat was injured already by the time your dogs got to it. They were prob just playing with it... yea what Col said.

WTF are the SPCA going to do with a dead cat?...

The cat's already been disposed of...

Will ask around tonight (live in a cul de sac, so not that hard)... But we've asked around bout that cat before (cuz it was eating our cats food etc) and no-one knew who's it was.
