Karapoti Adventure Ride, Sunday 8 July

This Sundays looking like the weather is going to be .... not raining

Looking at doing a Karapoti run.
Start at around 10:30am (ish) at the Rimutaka Caltex service station.
Head pretty much in from the Akatarawa side and exit at the other end.

Expecting it to be wet, slippery and scary.
So I thought I'd take the GS

If you fancy coming along, see you on Sunday
We have two riders confirmed so far. If the weather is really bad we may postpone.

    Cheers Jim

    I'm sorry
you cant do this ride this Sunday as my son and I are already doing it.

we are intending to devirginise our new dt230 (I'll bring the 660)

    Pick another Sunday

or .. alternatively we could do it "backwards" and meet you at the Service station..

it will be veeeery veeery slippery

(we may do some reconnaissance from Prm end on Sat aft - if its really really slippery we will woose out and bring our old shitter trail bikes on Sunday)

Have a good ride guys, I have had many a fun trip in there, first on my DR350 with my son on his DS80 (we used to go in from the Upper Hutt side and the very first time we went in we got through the gorge and he wanted to turn round and go home!) to some wonderful rides on my DR400 with my boy on his (then) DRZ125 and other friends who we introduced to the area.

Would love to be with you this weekend, not sure about taking the 990 in there though without some nobblies on!

Marks have a good one, break in the DT (in a good sense of course)!

Will be planning a couple of small side trips on the Pram side which might also be of interest to others.

1/ Check out newly rebuilt Orange hut.

2/ Short blat back along Titi ridge (before heading down Perhams road), to Whakatiki forest which is a small pine plantation. There is a point of interest there for those who have GPS receivers or are into geocaching.
I'll be in for a look around. I've only been through once and I wasn't to sure
of my way around so I kept pretty much to the main road.

Thumbs up aslan hoping to be along on the DR

i'd be keen to explore as suggested by Upshift - coming in from Upper Hutt - and yes meeting others coming the other way at warp factor is a hazard to be avoided - I'll prolly go tail end charlie - cheers Aslan

Glen and I have decided to take our trail bikes in from the Prm end with the intention of being at the Karapoti end by 11am (which we presume is about when you guys will be there??)

Anyone who wants to come through with us is welcome to meet us outside the quad place at the foot of Perrins Rd. We intend to leave there by 9.30 at the latest.

You may both have scramblers but there is one important difference - you are still relatively sane.

Just got my DR-Z 400 on the road (ie just got full license and wife will now let me!) but I can't this sunday. Had a good ride with Dene the other weekend down Red Rocks...got as far as cave bay but tide was in...

Sunday mornings are usually out for me with the young fella playing footie. Whenever I can though I'll be joinin you lads..hopefully soon!

    Cheers, Buggs

    congrats

on the plate and license Looking forward to more rides. Word of warning, don't try and ride 1000kms in a weekend on the DRZ, it's painful.. though Zukin says you eventually get used to it, I have my doubts ;p

btw, fouled another plug today. go me. I need to get that sorted. Also stuck a new rear on today and went to Red Rocks to scrub it in, heaps more traction in the sand Should be good enough for the wet clay of Karapoti.

Ooops, i dropped my photos off, here they are again.

Orange hut is a bit of an icon in this area, but has been deliberately burnt down three times I think. Looks like it's been rebuilt with concrete blocks this time.

The Titi ridge side trip is to a point I have a geocache to mark an interesting map point. There is a great view of Kapiti by taking a short walk (so bring cameras). You can also carry on from there down Hydro Valley (not to be confused with Hydro Road ) which takes you down to Orange Hut and provides a different bit of scenery. From Orange hut it is a short hop back to the main "Pram track" so that would be my suggestion for a bit of a diversion. There is one slightly tricky river crossing between Orange Hut and the main track in that there is a short but steepish climb out of it. It's easier to do it from the Orange Hut side as the slope is a descent which is easier. However it's not as bad as I'm probably making it sound.

So providing the weather doesn't suddenly turn, which is unlikely, I look forward to meeting up at Caltex as suggested.
