Scooter down (6 October)

Wifey and I headed off to Raglan yesterday for a ride and came upon a scooter accident. The guy who stopped and called the ambulance told us that the rider seemed to have suffered back injuries and that the nurse/medics were concerned about internal chest injuries.
The Wespac chopper flew him off in the direction of Waikato hospital.

I hope it's not as bad as it sounds.

We were told the rider fishtailed after hitting some gravel and lost control. This was on the really r/h at the top of one of the main climbs some distance before the turnoff to Huntly going South. When we went past his bike was in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.
It must be bloody hard to bring it back under control with such tiny wheels after hitting gravel.

was the rider wearing gear? (not a dig, just that i usually only see young girls on scooters on their way to school with little or no gear apart from a open face helmet)

Hi there, this was the latest yesterday from a mate who popped in to visit him: "His condition is ok. He had an operation yesterday on arrival and they removed his spleen as it was too badly damaged by his 5 broken ribs. He is in a unit where he is constantly being monitored. A tube in his nose, one sucking fluid from his lungs another hooked up to the old fellow, one draining something else and I think a few more one giving him pain killers and intravenously along with all the monitoring equipment. Despite all this he is in good spirits and should be out of hospital in 10 days and back at work in about a month. He is going to loose the nail on his big toe and has a few scratches on his knees. It is amazing that all this has happened from high siding at 40kph. It was a little bad luck on the landing."

Hi SG, this was Stoney if you met him. Both him and Ice were going down to Raglan to meet up with the Hamilton mob. How have you been anyway? Long time no see...

It was me that was riding with him I was behind him when it happened
He was wearing a fully armoured jacket etc
which became a problem as he was getting really hot and we could not get grunty enough siccors to cut if off

But we had lots of water to pour on him untill the ambo arrive with some grunty siccors

It is amazing that all this has happened from high siding at 40kph. It was a little bad luck on the landing.

I'm with you on that one! Wouldn't have been going much more than 40kph when I came off and smashed my thumb. Highsides can really fuck you up if you land wrong.

Thanks for the updates Rhys and Ice. Sounds amazing that they could expect him back at work a month after something like that! Hope his recovery goes well and is uncomplicated.

Yes I have a current Frist aid cert (thanks to work )

and the lady who house we used to call the ambo was a nurse
so we were lucky in that respect

holy camoly! I should relay this to my uni friend... she rides in nothing but an open-faced helmet (not that I havnt told her to get some gear!)... but gosh... ouch...

Thanks for the update! Good thing magnetos are so anal about body armor.
Anyhow, does anyone collect things like audiobooks etc? I've got a few things I could burn on a CD to keep Stoney entertained.
