Mad bikers

There dosen't seem to be many mad biker tales - so heres one of mine from a long time ago. Hopefully the rest of you will add your own tales to this thread.
I've allways loved doing wheelies and way back in the seventies I had a Honda XL350 boat anchor. Everyday I would pull a wheelie down the road to my carpark outside work. One lunchtime I lofted the front wheel and after travelling about 10m the left handgrip came off. I panicked, throttled off and went totally out of control. The bike came down and took an immediate left between 2 parked cars and up on to the footpath then took a sharp right straight towards a pedestrian. I only just managed to grab the handlebar and ride around the pedestrian and park the bike between 2 parked cars. Joe pedestrian only thought I was parking the bike and didn't realise how close he was to being gutted. When I got home I wired that grip on so it would never come off.
My wheelies got better after that.

My one to is an oldie. Many years ago on my first bike 53 Tiger 100 there were a group of us ripping out on the Summit road. There are a couple of sweeping lefthander's. The first one I took with ease and as I could see that there was no oncoming traffic I took up all the road. The turn was a breeze. Futher on there is another sweeping lefthander. Thinking that I could repeat the same performace turn I set up for the turn but unbeknown there was a cattle stop. I hit this at speed and got tossed up from the saddle momentarily. This was just enough to take me outside of my line. As I leaned the bike over the front wheels stayed on the road but the rear slewed as in a speedway turn on the grass verge. I put my leg out 'and nearly got the thing ripped off. In truth I was out of control and it was only with some difficulty that I managed to hold the bike until the rear straightened up and I powered out onto the straight. I got my reputation as one who could ride after that. Ever since then I take the line under control and never power out until I know what's ahead. Nearly bought it that day. No helmut (not compulsary) no leathers, no gloves (dumb I know but in those days gloves were for the winter. )

Keeping to the theme - one day a mate came round to show me the XL350 he'd just got going,it was a bit of a wet day - so I took it around the house in a big slide...off the front lawn crossed up and sideways up the drive,then onto the back lawn and around the front,kinda a speedway track around the house.I was going faster and faster,really getting into it,the owner was standing beside the house watching - and yeah,I got a bit outta shape and took out the house,and the guy standing beside it.

One day on Muriwai Beach we were playing in the sand - for me of course that means big slides as usual.I had found a cheap plastic twistgrip in a bargin bin and had fitted it on the old Beesa - I must of been doing a full lock clockwise slide...then the twistgrip slid out on the bar,holding the throttle wide open! around and around and around I went - shit that guy can ride eh?......

Remeinds me of a night I had in the early '90s. some yammy I owned had a slightly dim head light and I was off to see my brother... anyway... being a young ex-HD rider at the time, the only helmet I owned was your standard, flat black, open face with no foam etc, so on went the wrap-arounds... riding up this road with my sunnies on at about 11pm when I sees some markings on the road... hmmm... "Give Way" sign methinks... but the cars are waiting for me... 20 feet away!..... "friggin strange" pops into me head, so I decide to lift the sunnies..... to find i was giving way at a school crossing and the intersection, where I had right of way, was 20 feet further up the road.... any wonder I wear glasses now!

1984 heading from Taupo to manfeild races

I am in front on GSX1100SXZ wire wheeler heading down the hill to Cheltenham cruising as ya did when there wa sno Hawk radars

second is Stevo on the trusty K100

followed by Frizz on the MHR and Hughie on the GSX1100X wire wheeler

two sheep appear in front of me. one on either side of the road. The are startled by the wire wheeler and decide need to get together

I get through. Steveo on the K100 keeps a coming. one sheep runs from right to left. Stevo stands up and nails it and stays on and keeps riding. we stop down opposite the pub and get this photo.

see the front disk, nice and red and the forquarter hanging off the brake lever.

now a few people who have been in taupo will recognise steve and he had afarmer in his shop one day

asked him whree he was from and said cheltenham. told him about hitting the sheep and it turned out this guy was teh owner of the sheep and found it and wondered why it only had 3 legs

While I was temporarily out of my licence I decided to rebuild the Triton,but it needed a test ride before I was leagal again...well,I hadn't really stopped riding had I? So I rode it around to a mates place...we had a good day and I left kinda late,after midnight sometime.On the way home I found out I hadn't done the wiring yet,oh,no lights - then to top it of it cut out on one cyl,now I had a gutless single with no lights.I had to keep the wick up to keep moving - and as I came up to an intersection I see a Zephyr pull out from the right,that's ok,I'll just pass him - but shit me,he just keeps going around in a U turn!! I slammed into the side of him and we stopped there in the middle of the road with my left clip on stuck into his drivers door.He looked out his window and said ''shit mate,I didn't see ya'' Truth be told we were both drunk and he probably had no licence or WoF either.An amicable parting of ways and we were out of there before a local called the cops.

I had a mate pillion thrashing the ol GSX750EX down over the Greenhythe Bridge. To relieve the wind pressure I crouched low over the tank. Next thing I knew my pillions legs where up under my armpits. Luckily the ol girl had a pack rack fitted, as I'm sure I would have lost Geof off the back . He never rode pillion on a m/c after that for some strange reason.
