Makiro track adventure ride, 10 February

    If wheather allows it ...
(Wheather according to metservice should be fine

    Sun 10 Dry. Light winds.
    http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/...=farmwairarapa
    )

... 'KSlider' suggested to do the Makiro track on Sunday 10.02.2008, starting 9:30 AM at Caltex rimutaka. If there is someone not coming from Wgtn I guess could join us somewhere else ...

There is going to be some ride to be done, so be prepared .

Anybody keen is welcome ... :slap: with a so called adventure motorbike of course, whatever that means

Cause I'm "the new one" to this stuff, relatively speaking anyway (some may say I just don't learn). I'll let the ones that knows to detail how the heck to get anywhere close that track.

Reference to rides in the past so you can see what is all about:

How do you guys reckon it would suit an 'off tar seal virgin' with MT90 rubber? Also, looks like a good chance of showers for much of the day - does this make a difference?

Each to their own, you could be a good rider but I would suggest to ride some other "less challenging" tracks first.

This track is not too bad (but it can be), but last time we had an "off tar seal" virgin and they really struggled
But as always the other riders helped them out ok

    Just my thoughts

    Makairo

OV Lander could be nasty if damp as the track has deep clay ruts described by Aslan as a tramping track could be hard going on a 190Kg bike

.We do Gravel rides regularly so you are welcome to come along and get some practice just PM Aslan, Pampa,Busa Jim or myself we can organize something .

Have a look at the Capitol coast adventure as this is a great ride and well worth the effort.
    Cheers Pete

I'll be in if it doesn't piss down.

Had a nosey around the north end the other day. Quite overgrowen, but OK. Could be a struggle for novices or big bikes.

Hmm Thats got me wondering if I should come, I'm not a off tar seal virgin, but wouldn't describe myseelf as a good dirt rider. I have been over the Porika from the Rotoroa end, and also over the track from New creek to Denniston down south recently, How does it compare to them?

I'd say you can give it a crack, there is always time to turn around and go back if you feel uneasy, the track seems intimidating or whatever. I'm not a good of road rider at all, and have started just 4/6 months ago but with the help and patience of others managed do some nice stuff .

Haven't ride on the other Island yet so cannot provide any useful comparison tho

Its not as steep as Porika, just tight and windy and very overgrown.
I am not the best off road rider either, but this is a track that will sharpen your skills
There are some ruts in the centre of the track that sometimes you have to get into, and sometimes you have to avoid

See this thread for some images that will show you what it is like

I suspected from the photos elsewhere that this one might not be the ideal entry. A pity really, 'cos this Sunday is the first full free day I've had in ages.

I still have a lot of off-seal skills to learn and would really appreciate a day or two with you guys to get me started with these skills.

If there is anybody out there happy to invest time in a gravel novice this Sunday, then I'd really appreciate it!

    Cheers - Giles
