    98 TL Thou Help!?

    G'day all,

Just searching the KB brain here for (hopefully) some insight as to the problem with my bike at the moment. :spudwhat:

As stated it is a TL1000S ('98) And on the KB ride back from Whangamata last saturday I noticed something was wrong. At first it felt like it was down about a third in power, where I can usually wheelie in 2nd I couldn't get it up (the bike people, the bike! ), and even wheeling in first was difficult (as far as wheeling TL's is concerend!)

So I took it for a blat tonight and have found that when it gets to around 9000 rpm (redline about 10500rpm I think) it kinda coughs and splutters and wont accerlate any further! Im thinking maybe a fueling problem? But am worried that it may be more serious.

It still rev's fine in neutral right through to the limiter (much to the neighbours disaproval). I also noticed that both the water and oil levels were low, but only on minimum levels, they wouldn't have been much higher at the beginning of the ride. Only mod I have done recently was new clutch springs, which I have been luving.

It has done 60,000km now so i'm thinking the engine may be due for a bit of a major service/overhaul at the local shop (last big engine service at 25,000km). But does anyone have any ideas as to what may be making my bike feel like a SV650?

    Cheers in advance....
    _Daryl

i'd look at plugs & plug leads - fine with no load (in neutral), but ask for some torque to be produced.....

while you're there - air cleaner - is is blocked? and exhaust - has a baffle fallen into the duct? *could* be fuelling, but i doubt it.

might as well give it an oil change - i presume it's a total loss system ATM, but the filter will need doing. lube the chain and PRESTO - it'll be good for another 35000k

Have you not checked the Valves clearances since 25000K if so may have burnt a valve if it has a tight one or 2 ??

Like sensei says, it's been 35000km since the clearances were checked (if they were checked at all). Check 'em.

this can also explain your oil usage.

Colemans have done my last couple of services on the TL, they get quite a few TL's through and know what they are doing, around $500-600 providing there's nothing majorly wrong, so here's hoping that it's nothing serious on your TL daryl, i service mine every 10,000km as a rule. Could be so many things.

Well I've had a similar problem with my kwaka, of course it's only a little bike, and a lot older than yours but we took the carbs apart on the weekend and found the bowls to be full of sediment, reddish fine powdery stuff, I think it might be from old fuel or dirty fuel,Is your bike carburetted or fuel injected, carbs can get gunged up, but injection is a different kettle of fish altogether, valve timing can also play a part in bottoming out under load at high revs, which is what I'm going to investigate on my bike next.

I know exactly the problem mate, bring it home tonight and I will fix it for you,
you will notice on the left hand and right hand side of the fuel tank is a emblem, it says something like suzuki (from memory) this will be the main fault.
What you need to do is return it dealer asap and say this emblem is faulty, it should read Kawasaki. I dont think they will be able to fix it as its a fault that comes from the factory, best thing to do will be take it across the road to Hamilton Motorcycles, they will be able to correct the fault permanently for you.

    ( did I just buy a Suzuki )
Ive run out of fucks to give

I think that nasty man Heath from Hamilton Motorcycle centre as been fulling your innocent mind with propoganda! :sneaky2:

We all know that the Suzuki's are simply a few lucky Kawasaki's that were taken off the production line at birth and given all the best equiptment to get them up to the standard worthy of the "Suzuki" brand.

Think of your Kawasaki as the ugly, overweight, lazy little street hoe living under the fairfield bridge, if she is lucky Mr Suzuki comes along, he puts her on a fitness program, gets her off the drugs, gives her a boob job, a tummy tuck, and lavishes her with the best jewelery and latest fashions that even the Hiltons can't afford. Now you have yourself a truely classy lady worthy of becoming a Suzuki "brolly dolly"!

    Running lean...maybe

Ive seen that on a fuel injected car before, replaced the plugs and leads, no difference, then I put it on a gas analyser, whoaaa baby. no fuel getting in.

Now, that doesnt help with your bike, or does it. If you can get it on a gas analyser, great. Does the TL have a fuel filter? (I own one and I dont know!!!)
Could be as simple as a blocked fuel filter or maybe mass flow sensor/ throttle position sensor has gone.
