Heads up...
http://www.voxy.co.nz/national/anti-social-driving-not-wanted-parks/5/120828
(Waimakariri and Ashley/Rakahuri Regional Parks along the banks of the Waimakariri and Ashley Rivers)
...
In recent months, Environment Canterbury's Park Rangers have noted an increase in improper vehicle activity in the park. This includes people driving 4WDs in areas that they are not allowed in, and unregistered trail bikes using public access roads, which is contrary to Park policy and the Land Transport Act.
...
over the next few months Environment Canterbury will be working in conjunction with the New Zealand Police to reinforce the national road rules within park boundaries.

Think of it this way - at least they are trying to solve the problem (they have a mandate too) rather than just shutting us all out.
Play the game - don't go where your not suppose to (there are bugger all areas we can't go as trail bikes - MTB tracks is pretty much it), don't rip up new tracks on the stop banks and don't be a wanker towards other users. Still plenty of fun left after that. Through one of my road improvement projects I've had a bit to do with flood protection over the last couple of years and we will never win if the banks get stuff. The risk to Chch is simply too big that they will ignore it. This is why there are major upgrade projects underway and continuing for the next few years.
The last thing we want is to be completely locked out like is happing in other areas around the country.
Cheers R

Right you are, thinking about it, Lees Valley, go in Loburn end, come out Oxford gives a chance to go home via the 'mak.
So... meet in Rangiora, at... ohhh they took down my favourate... ok, Caltex Rangiora (cnr King Street and Scenec Highway/High Street on google maps) probably around 10am.
Depart as soon as we are all there(ish) before 10:30am I'd hope.
It's this coming Monday the 4th June 2012. Queens Birthday holiday.
Might bring a cut lunch to eat in there somewhere. Now where's flip and his gas cooker and Bacon.
Sound ok? Probably don't want to be any later.

If you're not toooo late come in Loburn and catch us up, maybe at the lunch stop taking in the view up at the airfield unless it's too windy up there.
You can get to have wet feet too then, or maybe not as main river is still super low on ECAN website..
It will be a fairly slow careful ride for us.

Good day for it, sunny and calm. Wee bit of glare off the damp road at times but most of that was behind us by the time we'd had lunch at the Airfield.
Three of us went, Shoshoni, New guy (not a KBer) and I.
I was a bit later than planned as usual. I arrived almost right on 10:30am and by the time I had my crap sorted (tyres/camera/tools strapped down) at the garage we didn't get away until 10:55am.
Lunch up top about 12noon to 12:45pm.
Water crossings all good and Shoshoni got a flat tyre that didn't want to be fixed but was sorted in the end.
We popped out and cruised through Oxford, then went down to the Waimak Gorge and emerged again at Intake Rd at 4:55pm.

With this weather, even tho it's supposed too be nice by the weekend, I would imagine the rivers will be quite swollen ...
If it goes ahead, would this be a 'dual sport' ride or a 'trailer in the dirt bikes' ride?
Transalper
6th June 2012, 08:11
OP is using a trail bike but I think 'light' adventure would do. You could probably trailer or ride the DR350.
I would use the CRF 1st choice but 'imagine' the DR650 as an option. Not the Transalp though, I 'imagine again' it sinking in to stuff.

Re: Waipara Pub Run - which way you planning to go ?
I hear say that if you park, start/finish at Waipara then the bikes get a better washing on the way back up the river to get rid of all the salt and sand from the beach section.
Down side is you have to drive an extra 14km past Leithfield to park at Waipara.
Is there an estimated unloading time?
I still don't know what I'm doing this weekend. :( but I'm trying !

Where you meeting and when? I was planning on going for a ride on the Banks Peninsula (probably on my own) but might be keen to be a bit more social :) How long is the ride? does it pass any petrol stations?
PS Riding a road reg KLX250 - trailers are for bikes that have broken down :)

there is a petrol station at the waipara end
i rode it on my rm125 with a 7 litre tank so just fill to the brim and your fine
normally across the road from left field pub, good secure parking then nip down the river up the dirt rode if people want to avoid the beach and up the waipara river. no more then a hour each way, and a jug or a coffee and the waipara pub and head home.
bring change of clothes and sum thermals, my cell is 0272854622 thinking of sunday meeting at left field pub at 10am

Not only did some looser crash his car into a power pole at 0300hrs this morning, taking out the power in Spencerville / Brooklyns for 9 hours on one of the coldest days of the year! BUT the power spike fired my ADSL Modem / Router! Only just back up and running again after a quick trip to Global PC for a new one. Minus 3 outside when I got up and only 8 inside with no heat pumps going.... Too bloody cold for a DR ride....

I'd be there if I wasn't in taupo. Take whatever you can control the power on. 2010 was muddy as, 2011 was frozen ice. Easy to pick up i.e. RM, is great but if you can't easily control the power to get it down then DR almost better. Probably going to be muddy this year given recent weather so RM probably better choice.
This ride is KDX200/200EXC territory.

That would probably work quite well.
I love the chest mount when Trailriding. You will have to take a little time to work out the angle that works for you as if you sit it may be too high or if you stand over the bars in an attack position it may tip too low. The up side is you can feel more immersed in the terrain and it seems to be a steadier picture than helmet mounts on bumpy terrain.
If you mount it too low on the chest you do risk getting too much handlebar and not enough ground in the picture.

Tried it and it didn't work as only smooth service was in center of the chest and camera stuck up too high and was hitting the bottom of my helmet chin which I only discovered when about to ride off! Have ordered the proper chest mount!

Minus 3 degrees at the start, plus 800 meter elevation, more ice and frozen grass hills than I care to ever see again!
I should have taken my own advise and used the Quad. I don't know anyone who didn't fall off multiple times, some of the downhills where solid sheets of ice that were impossible to stand on, let alone ride down....
This would be a fantastic ride in Sumner as the track is wide and fast, plus the views stunning, just NOT in the Ice on a 2 stroke MX bike...:eek5:

We can go either direction from there but probably hit the gravel up Haul Rd.

Twas a fairly straight forward ride except the locked gate navigation around Miners Bank Road which actually went well in the end too.

I do want to gear it down a bit but have stuff to pay off first.

It's about 30minutes to town (that might get you to near Addington or Hornby).
I doubt the internet is broadband out there but don't actually know that for sure.
The beach is all stones, no sand. You can fish but not swim.
They don't really like it when you ride down the beach so we only do it occasionally... though you could probably do the little stony crossing to Bossu Rd pretty much as much as you want.
Most the houses out there look like run down batches.
I suspect it would be a lifestyle choice to live there.
Don't know what the sea wind is like.
That's as close as I've looked while passing usually on my way to Bossu which I will probably do more often now I'm on the WR.
Could possibly take a video camera out there next weekend and spin it around if there is a particular bit you want to see. Google maps does have some street view there already though.

The section may be cheap but there are costs .............. you have to get a sixth finger sowed on so you can fit in, banjo lessons, a complete wardrobe change (I think bib overalls are their good going to town clobber)................... and then there is the hassle of having to marry a family member ...................
I jest - but back up what TA says there are some run down "batchy" looking places out there - also a couple of "flash" places but you are right you'd have to like the wind she gets it from every which way down there!

.... most likely doing Dalethorpe trail ride on 19th Aug...it's my favourite with forest, rivers, hill climbs and even some bog...all the good stuff
Hope to see you thereWhat tyres do you run for this one?
I only have the stock tyres (Trailwing TW301/302) on the thing at this time, my spares are second hand 17" rears that will not fit the WR and a Mitas E09 Dakar Front that should fit but I don't think of that as being a trail ride tyre, though it may be better than the current one on front.
I owe both Phil and Linton $$$ each at the moment so unlikely to be getting new tyres for a couple of months.
Also desperately needs lower gearing for single track and climbs and I'd prefer to add 4 teeth to the rear than go drop to a 12T front but may have to add links to the chain. All more expense.
Wee bit of a bummer, I'd like to say sure thing, but doubtful I'll make it so soon.

If anyone is keen to get out in the late afternoons/evenings during the week I could be tempted again... even more when daylight savings kicks in about 30 September on. Used to do some of the WNR road rides but could be interested in adventuring out instead.

Hey Carl,
Ryan and myself most likely doing Dalethorpe trail ride on 19th Aug if u are keen to try out the new WR.
Of all the trailrides I've done it's my favourite with forest, rivers, hill climbs and even some bog...all the good stuff
Hope to see you there
Hi Matt, I haven't done this ride before, would it be suitable for my LTZ250 Sport Quad, otherwise I will take the RM250!

Hey Steve,
It is suitable for quads bar the challenge sections, mostly tight forest roads/tracks and open river flats with a few shallow crossings.
Don't remember any tight bits or steep hillclimbs, Last time there were lots of quads there
Hope to see u there, look out for me on the XR650
What tyres do you run for this one?
I only have the stock tyres (Trailwing TW301/302) on the thing at this time, my spares are second hand 17" rears that will not fit the WR and a Mitas E09 Dakar Front that should fit but I don't think of that as being a trail ride tyre, though it may be better than the current one on front.
I just run the cheapest tyres I can find, Budget have some cheap $90-$100 rears from time to time, I find it more important to have a decent front on to avoid the dreaded washout! I'm sure if you took it easy you would manage on the Trailwings, after all you are only riding a light weight 250!

Speaking of tyres - does anybody in Chch have a knobbie knife I could try out? Got about 5 tyres with 70% deep tread but rounded knobs in the shed I'd like to revive. I don't do enough KM's in adventure mode to finish them all off which was the original plan. I would like to try before I buy as heard plenty of bad stories about knobby knifes.
Other option is to give them a tickle with the angle grinder. Hopefully no holes but will probably make the neighbourhood a little smelly for a while.

Hey R, don't have one in CHC for ya, but I do know the genuine Knobbyknife works a treat, the vital component is a good 100 watt heating element. Apparently the Tread Doctor brand ones are ok too. The cheaper after market copies are only around 75watts and cut/melt rubber a lot slower.
I have sharpened knobs up with a serrated bread knife before, hand held, not electric. The serrated blade seems to stop it gripping on rubber. Budget yes, but it works.
Don't bother with angle grinder, you won't be popular with neighbours, one knob is enough to smoke them out, let alone 50!
I often cut worn tyres in half through the wire bead to chuck them out in my wheelie bin, and just getting through the bead smokes up a storm. ;)

Water levels have been going up and down like a yo yo with the rain but R was through there on Sunday and tells me it's fine so long as you have a look and choose a good line (though it's currently listing between 6 and 7 cubic meters per second on ECAN website).
Always good to have a mate there to help if needed when it's like that though.

Unfortunately no snow on Sunday but river was quite easily crossed. About axle deep - see how flow Sunday afternoon compares to flow just before you go through on Ecan river flow site (http://ecan.govt.nz/services/online-services/monitoring/river-flows/pages/river-flow-chart.aspx?SiteNo=66213). It was around 7 cumecs on Sunday arvo by my reading of the chart.
Road in pretty good nic. Limited loose gravel and nice and hard. Quite a few washouts and rain ruts between river and Lowburn. OK at speed if you can get the front light when you need too else take it easy/keep your eyes open. Lots of water in fords/puddles but nothing hard to cross - just wet feet if the river doesn't get you.
South bank of Waimak in reasonable condition - again lots of water in puddles/fords but nothing hard to cross. Again if at speed keep your eyes open.

Could include Bossu Rd end to end, have to get up on the plain like a jet boat on water but it's us on gravel to get over the Birdlings Flat crossing, of course on the WR I'm now up for anything. Think I did it on it on the 650, but would have had knobs on to help keep it moving. Definitely done it on the CRF and the DR250 Djebel, also on Peeteeys DR350 more recently.
Now there's a thought for sometime - Highway out to Birdlings Flat, cross over the gravel, up Bossu to the end, down the sealed bit of Bossu in toward Wainui but turn up Jubilee Rd back along some of Bossu to Reynolds Valley Road and down to Little River... unless you want lunch somewhere else?

The thick & loose shingle at Birdlings Flat is a pain on a heavy bike! Last time I tried it I dropped the chain off the rear sprocket!
Not a bad ride from Purau, Port Levey, Little River via Western Valley Rd, Okuti Valley up onto Bossu and down into Wainui.
Can then either go back up onto Bossu via Jubilee Road and down Kinlock back to Little River for Lunch. Or head from Wainui up over to Pigeon Bay and home via the Port Levy again.

ha ha, I also have someone on a heavy bike re installing a chain there on video from several years ago... and several others getting a push. All quite funny now, as it more or less was then.
I'd tend to imagine a 10am meet, 10:20(ish) depart again, in Halswell at the garage or Taitapu garage?
Going via Purau, Port Levy (typically around 1hour 20minutes depending upon the company) from that time usually has us just beat the lunch rush at Little River, then riding Bossu after.

Yah rear tyre looked like a racing slick once the mud had collected between ya worn down knobs.
Picked up on carrying a tow rope from a mate - he never leaves home without the famous three - Tow rope - chain link joiner - small pair of vice grips
Yeah as R said keep some pace on - on the loose shingle at Birdlings Flat - yah get a decent run up to do so - if ya try going through in 1st gear you will no doubt be toast - recall 3rd gear run up then down to 2nd towards the end

Nice work, as usual, kept meaning to ask, where did you get your quick release / adjust mirrors?Ahh, the Double Take Mirrors (Linky to seller (http://www.doubletakemirror.com/))....
Quote from a thread by Rosie (Linky) (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/141474-Doubletake-mirror-review)
Got a set of these Double take Mirrors a week or so ago. I give them the thumbs up.
I got 2 x mirrors, 2 x 3"arms and 3 x ball mounts.
So cost NZ$153.50 + Foreign Currency Fee $3.84 according to my bank statement... and that's with the extra ball mount.
Took one week to arrive.
So far they are maybe less vibby on the Transalp than the originals but more vibby on J's DR650 (which has some Kawasaki mirrors on normally, hey they were free).
Yet to be tested on my DR650 (which I normally use Transalp mirrors on) and the CRF230 (which has a mount on the clutch side but no mirror normally).
I am thinking maybe some led wheel weights stuck to the mirror backs might quieten them down on the DR650 but in reality I can probably live with them just as they are as I've had much worse on other bikes.
Anyone around me wants to try them out when we ride together just ask.
They were fine on my DR650 and are good on the WR250 with stock gearing but if I do open road with trail gearing then they buzz, but so would the stock mirrors under same conditions.
On rougher tracks they can sometimes move (I sometimes turn the arms around to minimise that, or you could just fold them down anyway) and don't hang your helmet on them when parked unless you know they're done up tight.

Had thought they could be good practice but not so much as they are dirt, DB1k challenges seem to be more chunky gravel/small rocks up hills and more water crossings than typical in these trail rides. Actually flag that, anything semi technical should help right? even if it only helps fitness and balance.

Darn bike is dirty enough from the ride home (via going back up Bay View) that it look so much like it's been near a trail ride that I'm going to have to actually wash it this time.
Rumour has it a couple of people let their bikes fall over on the Bayview decent this morning. Only a rumour though as no cameras were present at the time.

They have the Cam Specs on the site, so I might ask around locally to see if I could get my one ground to these.?

Well I'm feeling fairly tired again, only a 200km day again too. Makes me wonder how on earth do I survive the DB1k weekend??? oh I know, more of this practice stuff and grow the distance as we go.... other endurance/fitness exercise helps of course too, I'll start again tomorrow. Only about 4.5 months to prep. ok I'm not actually that tired.
Quite enjoyed the greasyness of today with the wet ground in the rain and the MT21 front, didn't like eating pies in the rain, so glad it stopped.
Those water crossings were getting deep, but thankfully appeared easy for everyone.
There could be a nasty rumour of the WR on it's side where they might say I had slowed to turn at a gate, front wheel washed in the deep stones, we stopped and I lay it down.
Again, there were no cameras present so it's all just bollix I say.
Fun day thanks guys, looking forward to the next one...again.

Was just remembering a story I heard recently of where someone thought it was a good idea to have a go at the DB1k not realising how much more ride fit you need to be over their usual road riding.
Didn't end well.
All hear/say with out any hard evidence of the facts on hand but needless to say it pays to build up some adventuring stamina leading up to the event to be able to enjoy it fully and that's part of what I'm starting to do for myself already as I don't feel quite up to my normal fitness level for this time of year.

Tyre still up  - speedo now fixed :woohoo: - took the wheel off turns out the plate thingy with the lug thingys on it, that attaches to the screw thingy, that go into the slot thingys on the wheel had bent so I used a bit of precision engineering (read smacked it with a mallet on top of a piece of firewood) to straighten said piece - put it all back together and success!

Go riding non stop till you almost out of gas (planned to occur at gge), take no more than 15 mins stop then ride home again.
Slightly more seriously - when you do go out for a ride like Pig Saddle etc, just get rid of all the social stops, or if you do stop, 2 min max. Learn to keep the brain in gear for 3-4 hours at a time. Doesn't have to be top gear. Tortise and hare type thing. Just need to keep moving.
Basically on a normal outing we stop often cause the social side of it is what makes it enjoyable. You don't have that much time to stop on a DB1k.

Good stuff, Pete
where are you working and or staying (may be easier to get closer garage space) my garage is pretty full but may be able to squeeze one more in - I'll leave it up to you to tell the wife that her car now needs to be parked outside :devil2:

Technically it's Cnr Epsom & Main South Road which is basically the Sockburn roundabout and practically backs on to Racecourse Rd but not actually on Racecourse Rd.
Another nice weekend weather wise, looking like we're going to be lucky and get a good summer this time if it keeps up.:niceone:
Bikes still in single track trim, now what to do or where to go today...:wait: maybe just pop up and down Worsleys Rd for a change this afternoon.

...maybe just pop up and down Worsleys Rd for a change this afternoon.
Ended up walking up Dyers Pass to the Summit then along to and down Worsleys Rd a bit before side tracking on to a MTB track which runs parallel then back out on to Worsleys near the bottom of the 4x4 bit and home again today (22km and 5 hours round trip).
I can report that Worsleys from what I saw is quite dry now and so should be quite ridable (ground clearance and ruts permitting).
Intending to take the WR there Sunday about 1pm, anyone else want to play?

Went for blast out karaki beach with a mate, he was doing 100 k plus wheelstands most of the way to ashley river mouth on his pig, thumbs up from the 450 boys along the way ...... park up at the mouth on the beach and 10 minutes later the ranger pulling up .... was news to us but can only go as far as a red marker Karaki side of Woodend, ranger was good bugger and just wrote out a warning. He said speed limit was 30 km/hr :D

Only fell over once in a oh shit which way should I go.. oh no I've stopped... weeee bang ! moment.
Showed me I need more practice climbing 'uneven ground'.
Gorse is encroaching on the track a little much in a few places too, I hate gorse.

Nice one, I find it hard enough getting up there in the dry, not so keen to go when it looks like your photos.

How did ya get to the top if its not rideable in the rain ? :D
We did it in the middle of winter when it was raining, raised the rear end after that run as some of the large rocks scraped the pigs belly coming back down ...

I have a spare room at my place in Rangiora. Not much room though. I'm only a 2 bedroom flat, just off the main street.

Population really shot up out in rangoon since the quakes - demand for rental high - probably trademe with the rest looking best chance.
If comes to the worse you could always hire a caravan or pitch a tent and stay at the st johns baptaist camp site (some bible crowd owns the land) off top end of marshlands road (motorway end)
Few years ago had friends staying there and had container and a caravan parked up plus 2 kids 2 dogs - $70 a week including power onsite kitchen
Well run - clean - onsite caretaker - no bible bashers

I cant make it on Saturday as working at Katmandu Aventure Race (Surf Life Guard Manager) at Brooklyns, but am keen to know if you can get down from the end of Goat Rock Road into Lavericks Bay.
I have been to the end track above the bay, but wasn't keen on heading down into the farm area by myself. It would make a great round trip if you can get through....

Good ride today, always a pleasure to ride with Shoshoni.
Now what on earth happened to brp?? We waited until 11am then went on our way over Dyers Pass.
Going down in to Governers Bay two XR650's passed us and we followed them all the way to almost Port Levy thinking brp was one of them, but lost sight before the start of Western Valley Rd and since no one was waiting to say turn here (guess it wasn't brp after all) we ended continuing round to Pigeon Bay and beyond.
Lots of gravel, hills and bays later (including a gravel stock road I don't remember ever riding before) it start raining then hailing so from Okains Bay we headed back up to the summit where the hail had settled making it look like snow (or was it snow?) and turned toward home.
:done:

So it was you then?
5 posts above I said I was good to go.
We went near Robisons Bay but not actually that far... Pigeon Bay - down Dauvochell Stock Rd - up Pipers Valley Rd - Little Akaloa - Okains Bay - Summit 3rd time - Harmins Trk - home.
You have to stop at the major turns, we had no idea how you planned to get to Robinsons Bay.

Was a shame we all didn't stay together but still had a good ride even after the weather turned on us. Riding in the hail reminded me of playing paintball.

Had a great ride at this new park today. Main track is 15km of assorted terrain including grass paddocks, shingle farm tracks, single trail, and few testing hill climbs. There is also a MX track using natural / steep terrain. Well worth a look. I am trying to upload a lap vid...
