I've just relocated from Wellington to Christchurch and am looking to go on some sweet adv rides.

Any Christchurch Veterans willing to show a new guy the ropes? Any recommended routes etc.

I ride a F650gs Dakar and I'd rate my skill level as intermediate (on a good day..)

Welcome to Chch mate, for a few close by routes try Cooneyr's website ADV Routes (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/)

A couple of write ups of nearby rides here too :

Lees Valley (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/53/lees-valley-ride.php)

Lake Sumner (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/33/lake-sumner-access.php)

Edwards Pass (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/49/edwards-pass.php)

Mailings Pass (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/59/maling-pass.php)

Welcome to ChCh.
Plenty of shingle/dirt roads on the peninsula if that's your thing.
The Waimak can be looped up one side across at the gorge bridge and back down the other side. You can go all shingle/dirt etc roads or include a heap of single track if you get board.
Lees Valley is also highly recommended but read ADVGDs link for info on the main river crossing etc.

Post up a day, time and place to meet and what you want to explore and it's likely you'll get someone turn up to go with you.

Lots a tired bodys about at the moment though after the weekends 1000+ km Dusty Butt Adventure.
Cheers
TA

yeah Welcome, always someone about for a ride and the lee,s valley is always fun....

Again, welcome. Don't neglect the Peninsula either, from Little River up the Okuti Valley Road to Bossu Road, down Jubilee Road to Wainui, across to Duvauchelle and up the stock track then down Pettigrews/ Middle Road to Pigeon Bay and back via Port Levy is a nice few hours ride, with lots of different permutations possible. Like the others said, if you post a time and place then people will appear as if by magic.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Sounds like Christchurch is fairly spoiled for adv rides. Some of the photos from the adventure guide site are truly stunning.

This sounds like a fun loop to start off with. Just looking at getting my feet wet at this stage as it will be the first proper ride on my "new to me" f650gs.

Anyone keen to do this route on Sunday? Was thinking of a 9am start. Where do you guys usually meet up?

Skinny_Birdman

Hmmm, possibly. Still a bit knackered from the DB, and so's the bike. Will let you know tomorrow night.

Just thinking... going toward Little River for a start I guess 9am meeting at either the Halswell shopping centre carpark near the Super Liquor just past the Nicholls Rd intersection or maybe a bit further down at the Challenge fuel station Halswell, just past the pool/Aquatic Centre?
Depart at 9:30am?

Any better or other bright ideas?

Not totally sure I will make it but might try talk J into jumping on back again.

Sounds good to me.

I just went for a ride out to thompson's road. I'm guessing that you'd all be familiar with it? I tried out the Dakar on a bunch of dirtbike single track stuff as well as some basic gravel. Felt like a big dirt bike with overly squishy front suspension. Not sure about the tires (deathwings) but was great overall.

Hope some of you can make it on Sunday. Weather forecast is good.

Thompsons is off old Coast road. I spotted it on the GPS and thought it looked interesting. Heaps of dirtbike carved single track loops.

I just went for a ride out to thompson's road. ....Assuming you mean you went in to the Waimak at Thompsons Rd. We sometimes go in at Weedons Ross Rd which is one back toward town from Thompsons. Sometimes go in at the Intake, but can't say I've ever gone in at Thompsons. Gone across it a lot though. :D

I guess you mean the south waimak river single track (edit: just saw post). There are some newish looking single track down there which is really fun through the trees and 4wds cant get in there so no huge ruts. Went from inlet rd to macleans rd just before xmas, lots of fun. Could be up for a ride on sunday, bike dependent.

I'd say Challenge 9:00am for 9:30 start (gas=handy). I'm in, I think, esp if the weather plays ball.
We can have a Blue 'Alp alumni meeting if ThePom shows up. And then an XT bash plate viewing later on.:devil2:.

Asking for help is not a bad thing but by Friday morning it would have been too late as we were off through the Orari by then.
See you Sunday hopefully. If you want me to cast an eye over your issue let me know, then we'll consult someone who really knows what's what if needed.

Didnt start putting the bike together until thursday due to needing a cylinder head bolt from suzuki (mistake 1) and put the bike back together but it wouldnt start :brick:. Thought i had found the problem (cam chain timing one notch out, mistake 2) so thought it would be fine by friday but wasnt. However I had (mistake 3) slighty dislodged the exhaust shims when taking things apart  which meant the exhaust valves where always slightly open and had very low compression so wouldnt start.:blink:I Я noob:blink::blink:

Ahh, I see, or actually I don't see, or glad I didn't see. I start to get lost once engine gets opened up... but yea, want to have it running the weekend before and stop touching stuff then. I also had some last minute tweaks I discovered I needed but stopped short of ripping out the front sprocket shaft oil seal in case I couldn't get a new one back on in time.
It will be back next year and there are plenty of storeys appearing now and some video to come.

Suppose we should let the thread get back on topic.:Offtopic::innocent:

Ah the cagiva I traded for the R1100gs which I rode for about 9 months. I'm a student again now so I traded the R1100gs in for something a little more thrifty on the juice- hence the Dakar. I forgot how cool these bikes are and am loving been back on one.

The plan is quoted below, we are not going anywhere near Dunsandel or even SHW1.
We'll be out of the hills by lunch in Oxford.
You have Lees Valley/Okuku Pass on your website so should know the lay of the land.

Classic, just taking the p*ss about Dunsandle mate :p I know the area pretty well.

anyway me and advgd turned back and turned off at the next track but no sign of anyone

got the gate that was locked and the ranger let us thru - this gate is going to be permantly locked now!!!! how did you guys get on

cromagnon
5th February 2011, 16:06
Yea we got to the gate, waited for 5 mins or so, went around the edge of the gate on the river side. It was easy enough. Looked like quite a few gates had been damaged. Did the ranger say why they were closing it off?

Transalper
5th February 2011, 16:12
Went straight to that gate and had a bit of a look then hooked on to the grass on the river side to pass it and out we went.
Thought you two must have stopped at the guys working on the green bikes. At least that's what #3 thought.
Glad to see you all out... now what about Benjah?

Did the ranger say why they were closing it off?

He said there had been a lot of problems including people smashing up gates. On the back of the rangers trailer were about 6 gates all mangled by F*CKWITS in 4X4s. The ususal story, a few losers being dickheads ruining it for the rest of us :bs:

Thought you two must have stopped at the guys working on the green bikes.

I stopped to see if they needed a hand, but it was just the rear brake on one of the bikes, no biggie. I offered him $40 for the bike "as is" but for some reason he didn't accept my offer

Nice to catch up with you all.

Pleasure as always mate :niceone: The weather turned out mint after a misty start, nice day for a laxy ride, interesting encounter with the road bikes. There will be one sore fellow limping in the front door right about now asking wifey to run him a hot bath to sooth his battered body :p

For those not there, a group of road bikes did the Lees Valley loop, one guy on an older SR500 (I think) firstly had a minor drop/fall just out of the river, then had a spill at a fairly reasonable speed on gravel. His mint road bike is not so mint anymore  All in all those road boys had a blast, full credit to them, the mad buggers

Benjah
5th February 2011, 20:18

If anyone is free on Wednesday March 2nd then me and few mates are going for a spin up to Springfield to checkout a loop that goes through some forestry blocks.
(More about the loop here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/119869-Locked-gate-Dalethorpe-Road-and-Bell-Hill-Road))

Meet at stop bank on McLeans Island Road around 12 noon. Blast up the south side of the Waimak to the gorge then to Springfield for a Burger and Pint at the pub.

Then a 25km loop through the above (opportunity to test river crossing techniques)

(I've just engaged lawyers to help me in my quest to get these gates open see above thread)

I know it's a school day but it would be good to get a few along as this loop is a public road (not to mention awesome countryside see photo in above thread) but the forestry company have locked gates on it and are refusing to play ball.

So I'd like to generate some awareness of this route among the Chch bikers who I hope will use it from time to time as it makes a nice wee side detour for those who want to add a few extra k's to the usual Waimak rides.
I'm committed to getting these gates removed and a little support would be great.
Cheers

Pleased to hear that TA is bonding with his old/new/old Tranny, tho I take exception to the 'much neglected' bit ADVGD. TA got it back with paint you couldn't put fingerprints in.... :woohoo:

So, Benjah, Clarence Reserve?

be gravel roads , and rolling farm land with east coast tracks,,,so im told...

will still be good to see parts of nz i havent seen before. enjoyed the CCA last year and if its anything like that i will be i will be happy.

It might be a bit of a hassle on a big bike like the TA, the reason I say that is we need to cross the Selwyn River several times and although is not a big river there are plenty of those big slippery rocks hiding under the water to catch you out!
On the other hand there will be a handful of willing volunteers on hand to help out!!

7 minutes before this photo was taken I was lying down with my XR400 in the river having a swim.

My Dakar is in a metamorphic state right now (i.e. in a thousand pieces) so will have to sit this one out.. I've decided to give it a little more offroad flavour

The bikes getting new stiffer progressive springs front and back with heavier fork oil, new gel battery and battery relocation ,regulator relocation, bar risers with new fat bars grips and bark busters , new front fender (motorcross style), fork gators, alu chain protector, alu radiator guards, a new cycle works single pipe muffler and a set of D606 tyres to top it all off..

Should be pretty sweet when it's all done but will be at least a week or two before all the parts arrive and are installed.

Hmmm, well I managed all the fords I encountered in the DB without any dramas. Will think about it.

So is anyone looking at going into the Clarence on 26/27 Feb? I'd be keen, but probably not on my own..... The TA takes a bit of picking up, you see.:innocent:

Still "negotiating" with the wife - but trying to swing a Sat in, stay the night and back Sunday - don't need much gear, sleeping bag, cold food and scrounge a coffee of someone in the morning - sleep in a hut, first in first served ($5 or so for the night for a DOC hut ticket) - I am sure there will be some takers from down here - if not that rabble from up Nelson way are usually keen or there may even be some Norf Islanders we can chuck rocks at!

It's not as bad as you make out.
If your current buddies are leaving you behind on the highway then maybe it's time to play with us instead. There are still a few who like to exceed the limits and go for it everywhere but most I hang with are happier just crusing. The 400cc and 650 singles for example you might think ohh 650cc, they be fast... well they can go fast but in fact a lot are simply still more pleasant at 95 on the highway.
We are also normally happy to make extra special allowances for the wee bikes in head winds.

Unfortunately I don't expect to be going on this trip to the Clarance.

Was just about to have a look over some maps to choose a route and plan a ride. It will be an overnighter though, will your missus notice if you make a cardboard cutout of yourself and sit it on the couch for a couple of days?

Two options that spring to mind are:

a) Saturday: Rainbow Road, then up and over to Lake Rotoiti to camp the night. Sunday head accross the top of Lake Rotoroa via Porika Track, Braeburn Track, Maruia Saddle, back to Chch

b) Saturday: Waitahu River track (condition is apparently quite gnarly at the moment so should be fun) and stay at Montgomerie Hut, Sunday Big River, then back to Chch

Looks like there are a couple of starters already, any other takers?

Given my current state of affairs and ridiculous work hours for the past couple of weeks I selfishly snuck out for a quick squirt on the 450 up the Waimak south bank this evening. You fellas should go and have a look at the new 8km loop track upstream of Weedons Ross Rd. Nothing to knarly but a great place to improve the off road skills. All pretty simple but watch out for the sharp (almost vertical in places) drops offs. They can all be rolled over but a quick twist of the wrist will see you wheeling off them = riding god or impressive stack. I'd have taken the 950 around it so it's not to difficult.

Jezza's off back to Aussie this week so suggested a Canterbury ride on Saturday, up to Coleridge / Wilberforce area. Rogson left his XF here after the DB & (with his OK) we rode the 2 Freewinds. There's some sweet gravel riding up there & ChCh riders could easily include Lake Lyndon to Porters.
It was a great afternoon incl a posh coffee at Terrace Downs on the way home, where our dress code was somewhat conspicuous.
So I now have 4 bikes in the garage - Husky 510, 2 x XF's & the DT230.

It was a great ride, even managed to fit in some work calls. And being able to show an overseas visitor our back yard was a treat, even though he would have found the XF's to be "slugs" compared to what he normally rides. His road bikes are a ZX14 & a DL1000, plus he motox's a RMZ450 & enduro races a KTM 450 with big bore kit. But he still enjoyed our gravel & scenery.

At one stage I discovered that Freewinds can fly, but they don't land very well !! Sturdy boots (Crossfires) & decent pressure suit saved the day, but I will need a new helmet.
Might post some pics tonight but they aren't that great.

Sunday missus is organising a neighbourhood / community "earthquake, schmearthquake - keep smiling" BBQ / get together - I tried the old "ride would get me smiling, honey" but didn't seem to cut the mustard - go figure, eh?
What's that book called "men want to ride motorbikes and women are from venus" or some such thing - I would love to do the Molesworth / Rainbow before they close but looks like I will be slaving over a hot BBQ:violin:!

Good to hear mate, look forward to some pics

I am presuming this is a private land access ride with a few $ dropped off to the land owner? Do you have any track info, curious if your planned route is near Lake Rubicon or is more towards the Broken River side of the range

This is an organised trail ride on private land $50per person and yes last years trail takes you around Lake Rubicon which looks like a top fishing spot!
See flyer at www.myrides.co.nz
Definitely do able on the DRZ but you would have to strip it down...ie: no panniers

A bit of a ride report:
Big mobs of cattle on the Brothers, which meant every gate was shut plus boots & bikes stunk of effluent for the rest of the day.
McKenzie, Haka & Myers Passes all good, dry & fast.
Elephant Hill back road was thick with deep pea gravel - real tank slapper stuff.
Clarksfield Rd spoilt by someone dumping gravel heap accross road at bottom of hill - very effective at slowing down m/bikes, result here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/136168-ATGATT-don-t-knock-it.
As always with this cruisey gravel loop, BlackForest Track was the highlight.
Just 2 pics:
1) View of Waitaki Valley from near top of Clarksfield Rd
2) Meeting with Haldon Manager where between talking farm stuff, I got permission for future adv ride that goes through the Station & over the top to the Haka Valley.

Gi'day mate, a few things I have to sort out here in Chch so a change of plan, I'm now heading up Monday. You were saying the Molesworth is more of a scenic route than a challenge, but I haven't yet done it so keen to have a looksie, then down to the Porika, Braeburn, New Creek to Denniston, and end up in Karamea at our holiday batch. I'm heading up there to spend about 6 or so days with my father doing a bit of chilling out, fishing, hunting, tramping etc. Keen as to catch up for a ride mate, plus you are more than welcome to crash at the batch if you want

For sure mate, there are a couple of my fathers mates there also doing a bit of fishing etc but the batch is set up with bunks, fold out couches etc, there'll be plenty of room. The tides are looking right for some early morning fly fishing for some Kahawai which will most likely be the plan for Tuesday morning, then maybe a fish up the Karamea River, no set plans, playing it by ear. Thinking about heading up to Hanmer at sparrows tomorrow morning and doing :scooter: "the loop" was going to try and fuel up and head out of Hanmer as early as possible - ie leaving chch at 6 - 6.30, to hit Hanmer when the petrol station opens and then on the road:woohoo:

Anyone keen?

A great day - but I am now shagged - left at 7 (slept in) so decided the Edwards and Malings wouldn't happen so just did the loop - up Rainbow down Molesworth. Roads close this weekend so time was running out
My GPS says 669km, 11.57 trip time - took all the gear - tools for africa and a survival pack seeing as how I was travelling alone (didn't use anything but if you didn't have it..........)

Below - a couple of scenic shots - she is great country up there!
one just to show that I was there (told you I took all the gear!)
and the last to show how they raise money in North Canterbury - none of this namby pamby mufti days at Waikari School!

Well Crim and I had a good day out, went up the Waimak to the gorge bridge then on the seal to Porters Pass. I tried going up the track down in the valley below the pass but after having a wee lie down in the scrub after rolling backwards down a steep incline I gave up. Didn't look like any 4x4s has been thru there in a long time, the scrub has almost reclaimed the track which is now barely decernable.
From there we went the to the head of Lake Coleridge. More drama's there when I tried to ford a slighter deeper than I anticipated part of the Harper river and gave the bike a washdown. Luckily Crim had forgot his camera or he would have got some great shots of me floundering around in the knee deep freezing water.
Luckily the bike only took a few gulps and we managed to drain the water out of the airbox and exhaust without pulling the spark plug :innocent:
Here's a couple of photos on the way up at the Waimak Gorge bridge, Lake Selfe and lastly at Crim at Coleridge where there was barely a breath of wind.

We'll be fine and if we only get that far and back it will still be good.

HD, it's great, best picture so far but now I need to increase the RAM in my PC to deal with the files more effectively.
There were 3 of these on the trip and one tethered type... POV maybe.
Getting the camera angle is my main problem at the moment, never sure whether it's point straight ahead or more at the sky or ground.
Other issue i have is it's a bit of a sticky outy thing to mount on a helmet in the position I'd like it. I used the chest mount yesterday and left my windscreen off but it was still a little low. Next time I will tighten the shoulder straps to raise it a bit. Chest mount gives a very steady picture but then camera angle changes a bit between seated and standing and leaning in to the wind.
Lots of settings and attachments to try.

From what I've seen Video is often generally smoother using the chest harness though it gets in the way a bit if you want to open your jacket.
Shop around, the prices vary quite a bit in NZ shops. Got lucky and got mine second hand in good condition though I have had to spend a little getting bits to complete the kit and now I want a few of the other extra accessory attachments.
I got sold on them from seeing what Peeteey was acheving with it.

Here's a quick (if you can call all day Friday and all day today in front of the PC when I could have been out and about 'quick') cut off my camera work from Lees Valley last Sunday.
I'm afraid even though it's a HD camera I only upload SD quality. I'm impatient and like to use my internet bandwidth for other things.
Keep an eye out for the multi camera video from Peeteey yet to come.

Ha ha, I hear you about 'quick'! "Quick edit" is an oxymoron isn't it?

My video may be a little way off as the RSI is having fun with me arms after lots of guitar and that Oxford trail ride ... I'll chip away at it when I can.

Photoshop and any video program that has a wipe transition in it that can wipe at various angles. I used Adobe Premiere which isn't cheap but even windows movie maker or apple iMovie should do it.
I took screen shots from that gmap link I put up with and without the route drawn on, then in photo shop put the two together layered with the route one on top, then erased the route in several sections saving new pictures as I went. (only saved three times IIRC) then add the new map pictures to the video with the wipe between them. Easier to do than say, yet can take hours to make it look ok. Did you follow that?

Pretty sure I've ridden past that or through there several times on my mountain bike, but more often on my motorbike.

Any body interested in doing the CCC Loop on the 6th August?. The boss is out of town that weekend so might even be able to sneek in a second ride on the Sunday as well. Also I've now got the porker tank for the KTM so want to try our fuel range and how long I can handle the 2x4 seat.

Anyway CCC loop. Been searching through old threads. First done back in 2006 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/37846-Adventure-Cruise-to-Cheviot-Culverden?highlight=gore+bay), then again in 2007 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/59011-CCC-loop-on-17th-Nov?highlight=ccc+loop), 2009 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/103919-Northern-Canterbury-Adv-Rideouts/page9?highlight=ccc+loop) and possibly a couple of other times. Good day out with about 300km. Mix of seal, gravel, dirt and grass. Will be a crusy ride re pace and difficulty so those of lesser experience are welcome to join us.

Probably a 9.30 am start at the Peg with lunch in Cheviot. Home mid to late afternoon depending if XF650 can wrangle a scenic route home from Culverden.

Put it in your diaries now

Cheers R

Don't have to wait unless you want to.

Read in a petrolhead mag ther other day that the cops are either doing it or thinking about making repeat drivers with 'reg on hold' cars having to surrender their plates.
They were worried that they might not get their black plates back when they rereged.

Must be lovely down there for a ride nowadays.

I will have to try and convince my boss to let me start really really early on Saturday so that I can do my 9 hours and still make it to the ride.

Is there a map of the CCC ride? If I could be picked up somewhere along the way instead of having to ride all the way into town that would be handy.

If you trawl through the threads mentioned in cooneyr's post you may find a map, I'm not sure of that though.
Generally the route starts with a SHW1 ride up to Gretta Valley so it may be convenient for you to pick up with us somewhere like Amberley.

I guess 15 to 20 minutes after our Belfast departure time.

Map of the route below. Culverden back may be different as previously mentioned.

Re timing - knowing how things go we probably won't leave the Peg till 9.45, meaning about 10.15 though Amberly.

All of the route fro Cheviot to Culverden is public road. Random spur Rd from Brophys Rd to Kaiwara Rd is a dirt road and not the easiest to follow but it is a public road. Kaiwara Rd is a gravel rd but had lots of gates to open.

Yea, methinks both of us using the same footage, and experimenting with similar programs, with similar ideas, we're going to get some crossover huh? :)

I think that neither of us caught the others fall on camera. We were just out of range of the camera when it happened.
Personally, I planned it that way :innocent:

Yea right ...

I do, however, think we could get a great "Transalper" promo reel from the footage. We could make it look like you have a camera crew in front and behind as well as get your POV with no one out in front ...

Or are we just trying to get too fancy? :D

I was talking to a couple of farmers about access for the return to Chch leg of the CCC loop today and its a no go cause of lambing. So to spice things up a little I've changed the route. Topo with the route shown below.

It seems I can't attach a gps file (garmin gdb) so for those that want an auto routing file for a Garmin GPS send me an email or a PM with your email address.

Meet at the Peg (Speights Pub at the Belfast end of Motorway) at 9.30. Departure at 0945. If your not at the Peg by 9.45, our first stop will be at Motunau.
