So it was you then?
5 posts above I said I was good to go.
We went near Robisons Bay but not actually that far... Pigeon Bay - down Dauvochell Stock Rd - up Pipers Valley Rd - Little Akaloa - Okains Bay - Summit 3rd time - Harmins Trk - home.
You have to stop at the major turns, we had no idea how you planned to get to Robinsons Bay.

Good etiquette to always confirm that you have seen the meeting place and time or I do not know if you have - I came in everyday looking for a reply - even several times on saturday morning.
If round lunch time Little River been a given on all kiwibiker runs I been on - you too could have had a cold pie :D

Yeah paintball good analogy - we both had MX gloves on and once got wet the chill factor was

something else - passer-bys probably wondered why two men were slumped over their bikes
cuddling their motors  ended up riding with no gloves and was much better

Look forward to seeing the vid tango ...

Yes, we suspected that may have been the problem... and I generally go for Little River for lunch, Akaroa is actually the traditional place but you really do have to leave earlier or take a more direct route to get to Akaroa anywhere near mid day.
Next time I think I'm going I'll be sure post again after the time/place is arranged.

Yeah especially when dealing with someone solid like yourself, thought strange you never replied and you had been in and replied to the WNR thread, was start of the week my first post to just see if anyone was keen before details ironed out and thought maybe something had come up - gearing issues or something in your life outside of motorbikes - Janet wanting you to whisk her away for a romantic weekend aboard the transalp .....

"Chalk it down to experience" prob good for us to all learn from - will be putting in future ride announcements can at least one person confirm the meeting time and place is suitable and you will be there - saves the potential for looking like a right tool parked up on a garage forecourt getting no gas or air or worse still they think you are casing the joint :Police: :D

(Think Akaroa Fish and Chip shop better folk to give your money to, than the little river cafe - might drop some balaclava's off for them next time passing - $4.40 for 600 ml bottle of coke :shit::facepalm::angry:)

Had a great ride at this new park today. Main track is 15km of assorted terrain including grass paddocks, shingle farm tracks, single trail, and few testing hill climbs. There is also a MX track using natural / steep terrain. Well worth a look. I am trying to upload a lap vid...

Cool, look forward to seeing it. Been curious about that place for a while now, will be good to check it out.

Avoncity Suzuki have postponed this weeks Tekapo weekend due to the expected weather bomb!
Bugger as I had a room booked at Peppers! And now for a $ lesson.
Booked it on line and saved $20.00, when I canceled the booking they said I had to pay a $50 fee.
I then asked for my refund balance and was told that they would give me a credit for 12 months on future bookings!
Final straw was that they then charged me the $50 cancel fee on top of the $100 room fee I had already paid, so it ended up costing me $150.00 for a $100 room that I didn't use!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get hold of them about that. You should be refunded the room fee minus the cancellation fee.

Tempted but I'm just not sure what to do.
Could be a bit of a test for the Transalp with it's roady tyres on. Just put a new E08 on rear needs scrubbing in and don't know what to expect from the Avon Gripster up front on gravel. Tending to swing toward a yes now.

Harrs Rd is the direct way in to that ford we had to zig zag through the field to get past the wash out.
How's that ford now?

Yea, format/compression/something needs changing for picture quality. Can go to you and see what you're working with sometime, maybe make some suggestions.

Track looks ok, open Sundays only 9.30 to 3.30, $40 per Rider.

I'd like some decent tyres then keen to go, but trying to save my tyre change for the DB1k so that they are fresh for that. :argh:

As for your booking - be sure to put a "Glowing report" on http://www.tripadvisor.com/ Mrs manages a motel from time to time and apparently trip advisor ranking are very important to most moteliers etc

the ford is all fixed and just part of the road again now. yep so harrs is the best way in now - not sure how long the rest of the track is closed. slowly losing access with that gate still locked after the mx track as well. they dont seem to be in any hurry opening up the bit on the south side that was clsed for forestry either

*sigh*

I remember the good old days, when I could ride my TC100 anywhere on the waimak I so desired, or gas up in rangiora and head out playing around the ashley forest roads.

Are people that much more antisocial these days that you have to keep them out, or are the osh laws so draconian that you can't risk letting them in?

I know back then I never caused anybody any problems hooning around on my little 2 smoker, I just wanted to go for a ride, much like now really.

brp
13th October 2012, 08:19
Asked a Ranger why Waimak roped off all over the place - "Cause some people were not staying on the tracks - going all over the show and killing nesting bird life - particularly along the river edge".

Suspect their other motive is to one day charge for the use of the MX track and even possibly river tracks .......

ChCh to Hurunui... Normally I would expect to go via Rampaddock Rd, not the beach. Turn left at Amberley, goes thru some nice valleys, some seal, some gravel, couple of straights and pops out near the Hurunui.
Map attached.
I'd like to go but am unlikely to attend at this time... all down to the fuel supply being diverted to the following weekend's Amuri Area School Fundraiser Trailride.

Ok, the WNR Adventure option, I'm in, will be on the Transalp with pillion on board.

Assuming there's only a few of us I'm thinking we should try depart a couple of minutes early and blow past the first roady regroup point at Chaneys corner to get a bigger jump on them, though even doing this they'll still beat us to the Pizza.

How does everyone rate the Worsely's rd 4wd track in terms of difficulty compared to things like the roads of the Dusty Butt, and just adv riding in general?

I'm new to adv riding and gave it a go yesterday, dropped the bike about a million times and ended up stuck in a ditch near the top and coasting back down after the bike wouldn't start. Definitely the most challenged I've ever been on a motorcycle. Definitely counts as an adventure for me!

But if that's the sort of difficulty that I can expect on every proper adventure ride then I wonder if I've made a big mistake. Or maybe if I just need more practice.... (definitely).

Transalper
3rd November 2012, 09:25
Nice one McWild, I often fall off once on trips up that one (not every trip), don't usually fall off going down it and I can get the Transalp down it but never tried taking the Transalp up, saved going up for the smaller bikes... DR650 or smaller.
I'd rate Worsleys as more difficult than most adventures for reasons of the depth and amount of the ruts. DB1k is not really a ride for novices due to the overall distance each day as much as the terrain.

You need to hook up on a Lees Valley, waimak loop, or a CCC loop to start then progress to do Rampaddock Rd to Hamner to Edwards and Mailings Passes and back in a day to get a taste of DB1K type riding.
Other stuff I want to do soonish would be a ride in to Big River (Reefton) and the Porika/Braeburn/Maruia Saddle. Add the Rainbow key to exclude more seal and make another loop.

"Starting in the deep end Mc Wild" - I like your style :niceone:

Transalp - What tyres will you be running for the Big River ride - be lot of tar to get there ?

Still undecided what tyres will go for when T63's shot - (might get 2000 k's out of them) wondering
how long E09's would last doing rides with bit of tar on an XR ...

How does the average punter go shod with a e09 front and e07 rear on the challenge sections of the DB1k ?

(Maybe train with e07 rear and then whack knob on back for DB1k, like the experienced one said - be prepared for change in weather)

I hear the Mitas C02 is liked by some XR650 owners. I put about 2 or 3 on the DR650, the knobs are tall so move around a bit especially when new but held on ok.
I only own two rear tyres for the WR so far and bearing in mind there will be quite a bit of seal getting north I might indeed be best to put the stock Bridgestone TW302 back on.
Will continue to use the Perelli MT21 front until it's all gone. Got Mitas C16 rear and C17 front coming for DB1K.
Front end traction is the one I'd worry about more for most stuff now days... DB included I suppose. Still like a good rear but more concerned about the front.

Someone (Buddha?) used the Tractionator HT (http://www.motoz.com.au/shop_proddetails.asp?prodID=100) available from Dirtzone in ChCh (http://www.dirtzone.co.nz/) on a XR650 (1dayer) last DB1k. Wonder what he thought of that?

have a look at the shinko 244, bits 4 bikes have them, i had mine delivered for a total of $108. me and mxnut are running them and im really impressed with the longativity and traction both on road and gravel havent been on the muddy stuff yet. there out lasting my usual TW302's and my mx tyres.
rear only though, AC10's rule the front of my pig.

Cheers TA and BRP, it was a laugh either way, but resisting the temptation to try again isn't easy. Can't stand letting things beat me like that.

TA thanks for the adventuring advice. I am still considering the DB as Sam (Casualty on here) keeps nagging me, but would want to get in a heap more practice over the Summer. Although applications to enter close soon right? So might not be able to. We'll just have to wait and see I guess. I'll definitely keep those routes in mind.

both buddha and i used the tractionator on our xrs last year. not sure if they were the it or ht tho. i would recommend them. did around 1700km then sold the bike and it still had tread.

got less then 3 from c02, tkc80, just over 3 for t63 and about 5 from e09. so for the price i would get the tractionator

Can't stand the 244's now (got one on the back of the DR).

I put it in the MT21 rear camp. A good tyre if you like rear wheel steering and spinning it up. No good for low speed tractoring in hardpack with loose stuff on top.

The E07 rear at 18psi matched to an E09 front at 20psi would be a hard combo to beat on the DB for a 650 type bike.

Sure I've seen those little black lens somewhere - you could email gopro, if no joy you could have good hunt round alibaba on both site formats,

What do you mean by the second Huruni River bit? If you use Random Spur Rd and Kaiwara Rd to get to Culverden after Cheviot (or even without Random Spur) then you have effectively a version of the CCC loop.
Some talk of doing that in a few weeks but don't let that stop you.

anyone keen to take there bike out on the new motard track at ruapuna?

seen this on face book

"Dirt-bikes on 21/18 inch wheels welcome as well (no knobblies though). Proper supermoto racing in Chch (Ruapuna) will finally be held on 10th Nov (followed by a motard/dirt-bike only track-day on 17th) - spread the word please. At least 10 entrants are needed... message Shoutout Events for more info."

I took part in the have a go day on Saturday, second hand adv tyres on my gasgas, had an awesome day. Another one coming up on December 23, ideal oppurtunity for the chch adv community to get out and have a go, ride your adv bikes or if you have a dirt bike lurking in the shed throw an old set of your adv tyres on and away you go.

If any of you guys out there have any old tyres that you are looking to get rid of (not knobblies), offer them up to guys with dirt bikes keen to have a go, may be a good way of getting rid of them, I will be interested in some more to pass onto mates with dirt bikes keen to have a go.

Assuming the river levels remain low enough some people doing the Leithfield to Waipara pub ride (mostly dirt bikes) from Leithfield Pub at 10am on Saturday (1st Dec).
Could start the CCC ride by attending that then and there, include the river ride one way on the way up?
Expect some soft gravels, bit of sand and wet feet through to Waipara, then head to Motanau or Culverden to pick up the CCC depending upon the direction you want to go round.

Saturday 10am at the old Leithfield Pub carpark(ish) to include the Riverbed/beach bit or I guess let me know if you are coming but skipping the river and meet an hour and a half to two hours later at the Waipara Pub for just the CCC loop bit.
I actually have no idea how long it will take on the rivers and beach road between Pubs.

Was hoping to hear from Shoshoni whether he is able to go Saturday as it was him that wanted to go in the first instance.

I'm keen just waiting to get a part fixed I pick it up Friday, I should be ready for Saturday fingers crossed.
Not sure what way round you peeps want to go, I have no time constraints except to stop and let my arse rest.
Are the beach roads like Bayleys Rd Between Birdlings Flats & Taumutu.
Also is the Leithfield Pub the one by Old Main North Rd & Mill Rd?

Transalper
27th November 2012, 15:06
My fingers are crossed for you too then.

Leithfield meeting point as I understood it is indeed around about the corner of Mill Rd and Old main North Rd. There is river access almost right there as a continuation of Old Main Nth Rd.
Don't know if that Pub is actually still operating, heard that it suffered damage but no recent news and this will be my first time past it in several years.
As to the Beach roads.... have not ridden the Pub to Pub route but have been told you can ride on the beach on the sand (bit like Ninety Mile beach I assume) or use some kind of road just in from the beach which I assume to be firmer and less sandy than the beach itself. You can see wheel tracks on Google Maps along the beach edge just north of the end of Newcombes Road but they disappear later so the beach may be easier to navigate on. Could pick up Golf Links Rd at Amberley beach. I really wish I had a track log to follow but going to have to make it up as we go.
I have been up and down the river that runs through Leithfield but not done much of the Waipara one other than a little geocaching very near the SHW1 bridge.
If the Transalp was my only bike I would be happy to have a go at this ride with E09's on but since the WR is there and will be more fun and less likely to need a hand with on the river beds I will be using that.
DR should be fine, again better with E09 style tyres for any soft bits. I remember some of the river by the Leithfield being like the Eyre River or Selwyn riverbed with a mix of gravels big and small and reasonably shallow water to zig zag through. Heaps of fun on a warm day. Waipara river will be wetter... so I'm told.

As for CCC direction/version, maybe we just repeat the last one, go via Ethelton, skip the seal bit through Gore bay? Not much in it either way.

Sorry guys, can't make it this weekend, doing the Chatto Creek 1000 on the AT.
Had a blast the other day. Came back through the Waimak North side. Got lost in the bush early on, but found those climbs off the road as in your vid TA. A great day and thanks for that photo Crim.
Spot on.
Have a drift or two on the beach Saturday.

I have a 3/4 worn 705 on the rear of the XT..
Really don't want to replace it till the DB1K..

That is a somewhat subjective question and at this stage your guess is as good as mine as this is my first time through 90% of the Leithfield to Waipara bit. How heavy is the XT in your hands?? I don't think/imagine it is as sinky as the Birdlings Flat gravels or if it is hopefully it's only very short bits like that before the stones grow in size and firm up again.
From Waipara the rest is mostly well formed gravel you'll love with a couple of lumpy and grassy bits that should not be too much of a problem on anything. Got SkinneyBirdman on the 650 Transalp on video getting up them bits with E07's on throwing mud at me. Good view or two up top too.
Join us at Waipara Pub if you have doubts. I'm just not sure how much time we need to get there.
About to have a look at the (now old) 4x4 books I have to see if they have anything on the river/beach/river bit there.

edit.. they are in the 4x4 books (rivers and beach bits as well as the CCC loop roads) but not particularly helpful in describing the river and beach bits in a way that would be useful to this conversation.

It is said to take an hour to get from Pub to Pub.... once we get started so meeting at 10, guessing we'll be having a drink at the Waipara pub at 11:30 before moving on to do the Cheviot/Culverden bit. Wonder where lunch should be, early at Waipara or near 2 at Cheviot? Guess we'll play it by ear.

Went in from the Amberley Golf course end earlier this year on LTZ250 Sports Quad, I recall a hell off a lot of river crossings and deep shingle. River was up and Quad started floating so turned back!

Not sure how the heavy DR650 will cope! Great on the RM250 but not so good on SH1

Might meet you at the Waipara Pub, or will risk the rivers if plenty of others able to push....

Did the waipara from pub to beach and back on my XL250, no real issues a few loose gravel parts that take a bit of grinding through, and need to pick your river crossings in a few places depending on what the river is like. Usually there are 4wd tracks to follow, and don't forget to stop at plateau in the loop of the river with the fun hillclimb tracks.

Would like to join you, but can't see it happening at this stage....

We could do something similar to that but was thinking of skipping Gore Bay and including Random Spur Rd is a must.
Take one .gpx from quoted post below and drop on to Google Earth..... tick all 3 boxes and the thing should load.

....
Link to .gpx file (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/62877090/PubRide-CCC-plan.gpx) with approximate route to be navigated in DB1k off road mode or it will fail.

Just an idea! How about doing the river phase on the way back rather then first! That way if we get wet or drown a bike we are nearly home, rather that just starting a 250km ride?

Could probably tie the rivers back in on the way back except I'm tacking the Cheviot, Culverden bit on to an existing plan by others I want to go with to do the rivers/beach.
They are only doing the Rivers/beach both ways.
Also been told by yet another party that finishing the rivers/beach at the Waipara end means you've washed the salt off the bikes by the time you get out. Exiting at the Leithfield not such a good rinse off which is why I thought of doing it going North then bailing from the return and doing the CCC to finish.
Guess I should have kept the trips separate but since the river ride took us so close to the start of the CCC and too late now I'm not backing out of either part.
I'm prepared for the wet feet but am not planning to drown a bike though I guess that's what the spark plug spanner is for. A drowned bike will make us late to Waipara so no body do that please.

I so wish i had a free day to join this ride. Amberley beach to the Waipara pub is a great ride I have done a few times. Last time I dislocated shoulder when the XR decide to misbehave. Was an interesting ride out.

That was a few years ago but If I recall correctly the beach section between Amberley and the river could be rode either high on the soft shingle - or low, depending on the tide, on packed shingle, either way you weren't far away from the firm stuff off the beach and with a group shouldnt be a problem for most bikes.

Once into the river its a wet ride with lots of river crossings, but mostly short crossings. More to worry about going through Lees valley with the Okuku river (depending on the level of the Waipara of course)

This leg would be a great way to start the day. Wish I could make it, have a great ride.

1st vid on beach is what it is, easy near the surf. 2nd vid on river bed is also typical of ride to Waipara up river.

Once into the river bed just follow the fairly well worn tracks. You cannot (shouldn't) get lost!! there are a couple of table top plataeu sort of areas to have a bit of fun on, the first one can dislocate your shoulder, the one mid way through has a nice wee hill climb challenge if you dare, other than that just follow the river and enjoy the refreshment at the pub.

I've been watching the ECAN site for ever.
As far as i can tell we will be in the Waipara Teviotdale area and it's level has risen insignificantly in the last 24 hours... not that I know what a significant rise there may be but it's still looking quite low to me. January/February/March this year were lower and has not been that low since.
Waipara White Gorge is a ways up stream and I think we may be able to ride up there too (as the 4x4's did in one of those video links) but not this trip for me.

I will of course look again in the morning but at this stage I'm still going for a look at the rivers unless I find I'm by myself at Leithfield.

If you want company before the 1st I am free every day except possibly boxing day as may be doing the Waipara riverbed thing, not sure but know we are starting in Amberley so guessing it's the river.
I'd been thinking about Molsworth/rainbow lap in a day, all opens on the 28th and everything should be quite good with this bit of drizzle keeping the dust down.

Then I probably wouldn't see you unless we're going the opposite directions.
Popping in to Big River again is something I also want to do but that is a kind of out of the way trip, not so loopable.

Did Leithfield to Waipara river / beach ride yesterday on LTZ250 Quad - 60 km return, a hell of a lot more fun than trying it on the DR650! The rivers were very low...
Only used 6 litres of fuel as well....

Have a great Christmas

If any of you guys out there have any old tyres that you are looking to get rid of (not knobblies), offer them up to guys with dirt bikes keen to have a go, may be a good way of getting rid of them, I will be interested in some more to pass onto mates with dirt bikes keen to have a go.

Some old Mitas E07s if people want them for free

130/80 x 17 with 1mm in centre
130/80 x 17 with 2 mm in centre
90/90 x 21 with 2mm
90/90 x 21 with 3 mm

pick up in Parklands / Queenspark, PM for details (but not at PC much whilst jamfaced sconegrabbers are wanting to be entertained)

.............. and no Nordie I will not freight them to Nelson so you can get another 10,000 out of them

North bank prob be sweet ? Could go up south bank and if hit flooding either boost it :D or double back to one of the many inward tracks from the old westcoast road and get upto sheffield/springfield via malvern's shingle roads

I am planning on taking the Sport Quad up to the Clarance River Valley this Saturday for a ride into Palmer & Seymour Huts. Fantastic ride over the Blind Saddle (1200m)
Great ride on Big AV bike or smaller Trail /Enduro. Went in twice last year and once the year before on the DR650. Will be towing the Quad up there....

Had a great day in the Clarence Valley today, 100km / 4 hours on the Quad Bike. Up over he 1200m Blind Saddle, into Qual Flat, then back to Seymour Hut. Then headed over to the Willows and back. When got back to the carpark and black Highlander it was 37 degrees outside the truck... That First beer sure tasted good.

Hey guys,
Are swapping bits around on the bike for the Dusty Butt (racks, screen, sprockets tyres etc) on the weekend so thought I'd take it for a pre Dusty shake down ride Monday, as I have the day off. Anyone keen to go for a skid around the Waimak (northside/southside) loop Monday?

I'm thinking most of you fellow DBers will be working Monday so I'm going to suggest we meet at The Peg at 18:00 to do northside and back down southside (to avoid the closed gates).

Whose keen?
