My mapping software and ADVGD's site add up to...
Hanmer to Lake Tennyson is 62km one way.
Edwards pass is 19.2km one way.
Mailings Pass is 12.3km one way.
So.... 187km round trip. Add 22km round trip to Island Gully hut if your camping... or 34km round trip if we end up at the Sledgemere one.
I will consede to these distances as, I only did a rough estimate from google maps measuring the maps distance scale againt my cell phone, then I doubled it.
Forcast is for fine, but as im in waikari, I can see north towards hanmer and its all cloudy grey but settled, light wind. maybe a little rain..im only guessing.
I think its good weather for a ride. I will be tagging along from culverden, so I will keep an eye out for you all.
Regards Greg.

One casualty from a swim was my left blinkers are dead. I will investigate soon.
Just had an ice cream and put the bike away for now and it's shower time, then be back to read the posts.:niceone:

Thanks everyone for a great fun ride! Nice to meet you new guys, thanks for coming along.
Nice to ride with you all again, great way to test out the new beastie :) which was excellent!
Definitely time for a new sleeping bag and some bug repellent! I seem to remember saying that last time I went camping
Anyhoo, off to bed. All this larking about is very tiring.

Well I've decided I'm camping again this weekend, going to go Friday up thru the Molesworth, Taylors Pass to Blenheim, across and around to do the Braeburn, Maruia Saddle to Murchison and probably home via Lewis or Buller/Arthurs.
Back in ChCh for Saturday night and do nothing at all on Sunday.
Likely camp at one of the lake campgrounds or find a hidey hole somewhere after Blenheim/St Anaud.
Might add the Porika but going to use the Transalp so probably just take the easy tracks mentioned above.
Happy to have company, happy to go solo... what ever, just thought I'd mention it.

What way does the long drop rally work. Is it timed stages over a few days? I'm new to NZ so don't really no the score. I've been looking on the Internet for info on it but yet to come across anything.

14th November 2013, 19:07
Bunch of people go camping, live bands and a few silly games at the camp site to amuse... that's all a bike rally is, big social camp that is really small compared to overseas gatherings.
Can understand the confusion though as a proper racing rally is still spelt the same.
Jarvis87
14th November 2013, 19:23
O right. I was far out then lol. Do they have competition rally's in NZ. Back in ireland and the uk they have bike rally championships that are good. Timed stages over 2 days for each round.

Good ride, we rushed the Molesworth a little (still took 4 hours though) as thepom had a room in Hanmer he needed to return too.
We parted ways at Blenheim and I ended up pitching the new tent a few k's before St Arnaud at the Kowhai Point Scenec reserve DOC spot for $6.
Nice little area, couple of loos and several areas to pitch a tent or park a camper.
Unfortunately the sandflys found me there too.
New tent is not all it is advertised as, the claimed 65cm vestibule actually does not exist... at all ... but thankfully there is plenty of room inside for one biker and most his important gear, including boots to stop the stones getting in them thanks to early morning ADVGD's which is what happened when my boots had to be left outside while camping with him last weekend. Panniers and topboxes can stay on the bike.
Also tried one of those hiker shelter flys, I'll never go camping without one again. Would have been great in the rain.
Some experimenting on how to get the best out of the setup is still required though... and can i fit it on the WR?
I finished with the Braeburn, Maruia Saddle, late lunch at the Hurunui and the usual backroads behind Amberley.
Pic a bit crappy.. low light and old phone camera.:whocares:

How much did the fly cost you? I've been thinking about getting one for when I use the swag roll. Roughly how big are they?

www.completeoutdoors.co.nz/oztrail-hiker-fly-xidp158286.html (http://www.completeoutdoors.co.nz/oztrail-hiker-fly-xidp158286.html)
3m x 3m seemed plenty big for one man with bike and tent.
No poles or pegs included though.

It's the long sandy spit by lake Ellesmere right?.
That's the one, there is a single sand track in there but its not to long.
The last time I did it I headed to the beach and rode across that, I haven't done any sand riding on the DR yet so I think I'll struggle.
Thought if we try that then we should try Birdlings Flat to Bossu Rd get all the that stuff out of the way in the beginning.

Probably still make the Birdlands Flat top Bossu crossing as no mention of that and it is easy to check on the way past but the lake Ellesmere opening....

I have done it from the other direction and there was no opening for the lake to the sea, but there is one small ford you have to cross by the church.
Transalper

I believe it's not usually open to the sea unless the lake level is too high, then they bring in the diggers and make a big trench which may be interesting.
ECAN website says it's currently open.
Guess we'll find out.

Good, productive and entertaining day.
Fixed a puncture with peeteey on his bike, floated across the deep gravel crossing from Birdlings Flat to Bossu, loved the Old Lebons Road/Track, must do that more often on the WR, only 180km and I needed a rest under a tree staring at the sea round Charteris Bay (very nice)... but how should I feel about being overtaken on the ChCh side of Dyers Pass by a cyclist who then couldn't get past the very car that was keeping me there in the first place. Quite entertaining, quite the tailgater.

It was a good day out weather was on our side.
They have cleaned up Okuku side which was nice to see no more ugly ruts.
South Side of the Waimak has been graded so there is some nice soft stony section and not much water in the fords.
I had one rookie mistake going into one of the corners grabbed too much front brake and lost the front end, I ended up stuck under the bike and had to wait for the TA & flashg to rescue me

Today was fun in the Waipara River, water level was the lowest I've seen when in there.
We started with four, two of us went all the way up the Waipara riverbed in to the gorge until the public sign saying you can not pass this point without permission. Then back to the pub for refreshments and eventually back to the parking area near Amberley.
Other two headed back early.
Few piccys from today...
1 - Four of us, one bruised thy among us. People sitting in the shade to the right.
2 - Sign in the gorge says 'Do not Pass'.. or something to that effect.
3- Somewhere in the gorge, on the way back to the pub.

I recall a couple of stretches of soft stuff 100-200m at a time but nothing that would stop me taking a big bike fitted with knobblies - you'd want to be happy maintaining momentum though...

It felt like it was more soft than not to me.
It could be done on a bigger bike with appropriate tyres and the occasional helping hand or two pushing, but I'd only do it for the novelty of it and expect it to be real hard work keeping the front end from washing out and climbing up some banks if you loose momentum.

Been up to the pub and back a few times so I can't vouch for anything beyond that but the most trouble we had was my daughter drowning her 140 when she underestimated the depth(seat level) of a waterhole! That and an adult novice who struggled a little with momentum in the soft stuff on the same 140.

Sure thing, that's what organising stuff here is all about... bringing people together and riding.
Also don't be afraid to speak up if there's any particular place you've heard of that you want company exploring, if the timing works there's usually someone keen to go with.
DB1K (http://www.epicevents.co.nz/page/87-motorbike-events+dusty-butt-db1k) and Bannockburn Bike Week (http://www.bikeweeknz.com/)are both good for finding places in Otago, one being an endurance event, the other a week of smaller ADV rides covering lots of similar/same places based out of Bannockburn.

Just got back from hammer doing the rainbow...pissed down as soon as I got to hammer...rained constant all the way to within a minute of the toll gate....4wd spoke to me and advised me not to go due the amount of water flowing...got to Connors creek and decided not to go further due to force of water, being on my own, no waterproof socks and not many people about.....I know my limits so saved thirty bucks and rode back the way I came...out of hammer and sun was awesome....it was sunny in hammer but still raining...weird....great ride tho....

I'd still expect to cross up to(ish) 8 and a maybe not by 10.
Depends a bit on the braids I suppose but I know one guy over on FB who was coming that won't go in at over 5. Something about a gas gas with an open top air box.
If we were going earlier I'd suggest Edwards Pass to check out the new bridge, but that's a fair way further to get to.
I don't suppose it'll drop over night!
I up for leaving as early as need be in order to have a good day out. (and I missed out on Edwards he other day...)

Me and a few others have been through Okuku Fox Creek when it's been up around the 10 mark but I wouldn't recommend it.
If you go in form the North Side you could always take a trip up to the Wharfedale Track and then do some of the back roads into Oxford it's not a bad run.
cynna
3rd January 2014, 17:54
And bang just like that 5 minutes after Shoshoni posts there's an update to the ecan data and the river level jumps to 11 and climbing.
Is there a plan B route if it keeps going up in that we don't even bother going there or does everyone want to go in for a look anyway?\
just got back to chch - pouring rain in nelson this morning and then hot and sunny but windy once i got over the lewis pass
we can decide when we meet there what to do once we see what the river level is like in the morning. if it is looking dodgy maybe we can go up one side of the waimak thru lees to the river and if it is uncrossable then turn back and do the overside of the waimak
if we go in the other end and have to turn back then its a lot of seal there and on the way back - was heaps of traffic on the road today and cant be bothered with that. same with edwards - a lot of traffic and cops to deal with to hamner and back if the roads are anything like today
anyway off to work now so will check back when i get home and maybe still see some of yous at 11 tomorrow

And nice ride today, I was very very late this time, later than usual.
Forgot the WR was a bit buried and mirrorless in the back of my garage since just before Christmas and when already running late it became a problem getting it unlocked and out then to realise the tank was as good as empty.
11am departing from the Peg, well I had just filled the tank at the Selwyn St/Morehouse garage at 11:05. :spanking:
I short cutted the first part of the Waimak section and poped on to gravel near the terrace tracks which looked pretty messed up with trees lying all over the place as I glanced across in passing.
I caught the second to last man in the group (me being last) just before the big puddle/ford nearing the end of the track.
After a full regroup (and it was a fairly big group this time with new faces galore :niceone:) we went for a look at the carpark area at the Viewhill end of the Wharfedale track. Plenty of cars there so I guess the track was busy. Yes we were and are aware you can not ride motorised stuff past the end of the carpark.
On to Oxford for a bite to eat and a long social chat kind of thing, then in to Lees Valley.
A good ride was had, more riding than stops through there and the Okuku Fox Creek, the main river crossing was good. Interesting to note my GPS log reads almost exactly 2 hours from Oxford to Whiterock, 18 minutes stopped for various reasons such as checking tyres when I thought I had a pinch flat but didn't, spectating at the big ford and cleaning my visor.
Deep enough to be entertaining but safe enough as to pose no real issues other than a stall... not a fall.
Final regroup back at Whiterock and home for tea and cake as Nelson Nordie would say. Ok, Milo and gingernuts, I don't like tea or cake. :p:done:
No I didn't take any photos either.

Yes we were and are aware you can not ride motorised stuff past the end of the carpark.:
Funnily enough, this might not be true.
A couple of years ago I was snooping around on my trials bike and spoke to a DoC fellow in charge of a gang clearing fallen trees from the Warfedale Track. He enquired what I was up to, and after some discussion told me that the track was still a gazetted road, and (never mind that the 4RT was completely not road legal) said that if I wanted to ride on the track then I was most welcome.
This I did, and at a very slow pace, quietly passing the few mid-week walkers, until I encountered the tree-clearing gang, at which point progress was impossible. They were OK with my appearance, too.
It might be different on an enduro bike, but given the difficult/tight/steep-in-places nature of the track, if you're not Chris Birch then a 450 or similar probably shouldn't be there. A trials bike is very discreet and if ridden carefully, possibly leaves fewer marks than trampers on foot.

Great day today. Only my second decent ride on the Gas Gas and the most adventurous (much more tarmac on Banks Peninsula loop). Pleased to see that although I feel like I ride like a grandpa and haven't owned a trail bike for 25 years, that I didn't get blown into the weeds. Only glitch was stalling in the Okuku River (need more commitment as someone said). Also pleased to see that the little 7.4 litre tank takes me further than I thought (leaning out the carburetion has been a plus all round). Looking forward to doing it again (when I can get a pass out from the blonde!) and putting some names to faces.

ha ha, too much power in your 450.
The 250 is definitely more fun and less energy sapping to ride than the Transalp... as soon as we get off the seal that is.
The Transalp is nice enough, but the Wr250 is just as settled and turns easier, it just needs a more active left foot on the gear shifter and isn't as nice as the heavier more grunty Transalp on the highway.
On the 250 I wound all suspension settings to soft to make the ride plush and it worked for me, with the power delivery it really only spins if I want it to.

Hey kids,
Some of you lovely people were nutting out on some ideas as to why my XT600 stalls in water crossings.
Three ideas are:
1) There are 3 tubes that hang down from the carb. When I block all three, which includes the carb overflow tube, the bike stalls over about 10 seconds.
2) The wire connecting to the spark plug could be slightly dodgy causing a short when splashed, thus no spark, thus no go power. However, to test this, I've had the bike idling and drenched it with the hose for a good few minutes, directly onto the spark plug, no problem at all.
3) given that 1st is geared kinda tall, maybe at the slower in-water speed with lots of throttle, the carb floods?
On the Malings/Edwards ride a while ago when it did this, I had to use choke to get it running again but didn't need to this time. ADVGD thought it sounded like the carb breather hose getting blocked by water and causing issues with vacuums. He had the same problem on his DR, re routed his carb breather hose and voila, no more issue. The breather on the XT is already above the air box but I don't know what 2 of the 3 tubes hanging from the XT carb actually do :)
I wonder if this is tied to the other issue this bike currently has i.e. no grunt down low, no torque so something's not right in the carby possibly.
You can hear the engine suddenly die at about 33 seconds in.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

i've been thinking about this and remember when i was farming in the high country we had the same problem ( it was the air cooled engine getting too cold ) we used to give them a little choke before going in. This helped. In winter we left choke on after crossing till engine warmed up otherwise they wouldn't idle. It may not be your problem. A leanish tuned engine was more affected.
Just another thing to ponder on.

Cheers Flash, does sound like it in some ways. When it died in Mailings I had to use choke to get it going again but of course the engine was nice and warm both rides.
In mailings, it would idle but not rev, choke on then no problem.
On this less valley ride, it died but started again no worries.

So are you guys going up on the Fri, riding part of it then camping in there somewhere? I'll ride up with you on Fri but will hang out in Kaikoura and wait for the Sat crowd to arrive. I still don't have a decent sleeping bag, hence the Backpackers. Oh, and I'm lazy
That's the general idea.
I'm going to need to grab a gas tank top up in Kaikoura (being the closest fuel stations) last thing before heading in.

me and the pom are leaving chch at 8 so be there 10-10.30 - just need to drop bags off, fuel up and head off. the gates open at 8 so you might not want to wait that long for us but if you do see you at the fish tank
thinking of starting out doing the left hand path since its the shorter one on saturday
