Oh dear, too late, we left at 6:15pm and Matt kindly reminded me how dusty 2nd place is.
On the south side we saw only one burnt field but nothing affecting the Waimak tracks except results of flooding.
Exited at Weedons Ross Rd on our way back to town.

I was sorry to miss you guys tonight (3 of you ?) - I was suffering from some confusion about 'the peg', I went to the one I knew but as much as hour before it was dawning on me that it was a pretty bloody strange place to meet up and I could smell a screw up coming on !
Anyway I went past the real peg at 6:50 and followed you round going off road where I could then like you I bailed at Weedons Ross too ! Had a blast even if just a little lonely as there is much of that track I have not done before. Some small learnings but overall really happy with how the gear is working out except for the front tyre. It's a mich AC10 and is seriously ferkin squirrelly. I normally run S12 but put the AC10 on for VTNZ compliance, the AC10 has quite changed how the bike corners, squirms all over the place and wants to tuck at slightest hint of a corner - more gas seems to hold it up ok but I not terribly happy with it - may put the S12 back on for the weekend.
Bags and storage worked out well and fuel usage is established and body has had the wake up call so all in all well worth while. Just need to meet you all on Friday and share a beer !

Unlikely to go but you better post up a bit of your plan, time you plan to enter and whether it's a one dayer maybe? Will see what happens, have a new WR throttle tube on order and need to get a new grip to match the other one, stick it back together.
Old tube is bent/warped but may be a heat thing from the stick on heaters under the grips.

Opening times there, it's Friday: 12.00 pm to 5.00 pm
Saturday and Sunday: 8.00 am to 5.00 pm.
You planning to be at the gate at 8am.... doubt I'd be on time for that but if I'm going to try I'll let you know.
Also looks like they are still planning to open this weekend, nothing there yet about the slips affecting this weekend as well, their decisions are made on the Thursday prior to the 4WD weekend so we should see the result on their (DOC's) web site then..

Why yes, yes there is.
Am thinking I will not be up for the Clarence this round, too much other stuff I want to do that costs even though all I probably needed is fuel money and time for that one.

Having said that I've put my name down at Avon City Suzuki for there retry at their Tekapo based Adventure now due to be the 23/24 February.
It's just some easy stuff been done before but I'll enjoy it on the Transalp with road tyres for a change.

Don't actually remember the whole route they had planned but think it was all open/easy stuff except the Black Forest if they are still doing that.
Black Forest was done after Omarama near the end of the DB1k, is still easy enough but just not so fast on the bigger bike and even slower if there's a passenger on the back seat.

was a good & bad ride to day...
went around all the bays from Lyttlelton ending up in Akaroa
mostly seal but found a few gravel sections..
the bad bit is.. I left my camrea on a picnic table at Okains bay..
no pics....
the good bit.... Found out why the bike seems down on power & dosn't like pulling
from low revs for the last few months... the nob on the fueling adjuster "Kev mod"
had turned on the shaft , it was on near min fueling... opened it up to around 1/2 way...
Now its a diffrent motor...Amazing what a bit of fuel dose...

Decided to go the long way home after work tonight via a track I have yet to try out, Worsleys Rd.

Given all the other tracks, the Bridle Path, Rapaki etc, are made for easy walking I figured that I'd be in for more of the same but was curious as have yet to actually see the track.

What a surprise I had! :baby: The bike loved it and the pretty bald tyres made it really entertaining! I think I'll have to do that again tomorrow and take the cameras :weird:

It's my new favourite track!

Last chance for Molsworth on Monday (11th March 2013), it's closing early for fire risk this year.
Looks like I'll be doing it Monday with a couple of 'newish to gravel' riders (just to say something about the possible pace if anyone else is interested).
Coming back mostly via SH1 is 'plan A'.
If we have time, nice weather and they have the energy I might try get us up Mt Altimarlock for the view.

Few Pics from my old dunga cell phone from up Mt Altimarlock.

I feel your pain (remembers Transalp toolkit incident last year). Peeteey and I doubled back past where he had last seen you and thought you must have taken the Darfield exit for some reason. Seems we were wrong.
Was a good day, wind was more helpful than problematic thankfully clearing the dust reasonably well.

I noted as I went all the way through to confirm, that Waimak south bank tracks are all open again, all the way from the Gorge out through the ATV area and Haul road on to the seal near the Pistol Club.

I'm surprised there are no rides over Easter Weekend, I wouldn't mind doing CCC loop again before winter sets in.

Nice ride today, sorry I left you guys in the South Side of the Waimak my tool bag fell off somewhere went back to look but couldn't find it.

Yo, I've got four days leave this week so might be tempted to take the bike for a strop up the Waimak, where did you last see your tool bag and what size colour etc is it, i'll keep a look out

For those of you who have trailride suitable bikes, the Flock Hill trailride is scheduled for weekend of 27-28th April.
I did it last year and thought it was awesome, fantastic trails and scenery, would have to be the best trailride I have done thus far
I will be definitely be going Sunday if anyone wants to meet up, I'm already carpooling out with mates

I saw last in Oxford didn't think anymore about it until we were in the South Side Wiamak, I noticed it was gone when we got past the building by the road on the right hand side.
It was an Oxford Tank Bag Black in color.

Thanks if you go.

Sounds good, I'm definitely keen! I haven't done a trail ride this year and I'm hanging out for one. Bloody time and money, never enough of either.

Have you not done the CCC loop before Mr S? Christchurch-Cheviot-Culverden-Chch incorporating Motunau/Gore Bay(ish) and Rampaddock Rds usually. Just over 300km
AT would be fine, well over half is open easy terrain but if the grounds wet knobbys help in a couple of bits (but not essential) as there are some grassy bits or hilly corners that can get slippery but mostly it's gravel... some of which is a bit rolly nearer the Motunau stuff.
I'll be on the Yamaha again, no choice really as TA rego goes on hold with the end of Daylight Savings this weekend, but then I might just have chosen the WR again anyway.

Think it flows ok from Cheviot end to Culverden, not so well from Culverden to Cheviot.

neels
5th April 2013, 18:33
Cheers, that's pretty much what I thought.

I know going the other way if you didn't know where to look after coming out of kaiwara rd you'd think random spur rd was a farm track, from memory there are a few branches near the top of random spur but sounds like it's not too much of a drama.

Next question, I noticed limestone rd on the the map when I was checking out where the turnoffs are to motunau etc, is it worth a detour on the way as well? Always keen to check out a road I've never been over before...

Transalper
5th April 2013, 18:43
I haven't done Limestone very often, not recently anyway, lots of stock, very much grassy farmland riding in paddocks along fence lines avoiding holes and with half a k of really slippery shaded area. Couple of Private Land notices in the area too but very nice views.... mmm.... what time you leaving in the morning?
Limestone was part of the original CCC loop.

Thinking around 9ish at the peg, cruza is coming along to the rally as well on the 650, our girlies are already there and last reported location at the pub having dinner.

Company who know where they're going welcome....

Edit - after some consultation, leaving from memorial ave at 10, so once I faff about getting gas probably departing the peg around 10.30.

I've still got this date locked in for this trip so will pass through Chch to meet up with you all and head off South. I have some tracks lined up to inspect based around a few remaining sections of a ride I am planning, but depending on the group it may not work. Some of it will be quite techy, lots of river crossings and not overly big bike friendly. Interested?

Yep, in fact you may just have landed the job of setting it all up 'cause passing it on to you is the easy way out and gives me someone to blame when :stupid:... was going to do simple/basic cheap accommodation as usual but please avoid tenting if possible.

Crikey, that took an unexpected turn

What I can do is come back to you with portions of my route and work in with you to piece together a rip snorter of a run. I have quite a bit of work left calling farmers/land owners and organise access (viability) for about 4 sections. Some of the river crossings I know will be fine, some however may be far too deep and the access points will have to be shifted up stream or above confluences etc, in all honesty this is essentially the remainder of the preliminary route run, not really appropriate for a public ride, especially if riders come along that don't have the skill level. Not trying to be rude with that blunt comment, just trying to keep it safe.

Much of the planned route will have been ridden by very few riders (I know for a fact some has never been ridden at all) so it will be a damn good route. I'll aim to finish up the calling Monday through Wednesday and come back to you with the results. We can suss things out from there.

Well

I was vaguely interested in this, but given that I'm horribly underequipped and horribly underskilled, I guess I'll just have to wait for the writeup and see how you guys go and visit the bits I can deal with later.

Transalper
24th April 2013, 07:01
Being unregistered limits your choices, closest to ChCh would be both sides of the Waimak but even then there are some bits we are fenced out of now.

Sounth bank...Go out on the Old West Coast Road to Weedons Ross Rd then turn North toward the Waimak and park up when the road turn gravel. Ride toward the river some more and eventually there is track access both sides of the road.

Northbank has the MX and TT and Trials areas access is left when going north just over the Old Waimak Bridge.

More tracks a bit further along the North bank may require driving further along the tar to get round gates that are sometimes locked now that theres Trucks working between the MX/TT/Trails area and the other stuff.

Further out and for $30 a day there's the Blackridge Park, Greta Valley as advertised on the myrides.co.nz site under Trail rides.

The whole time I was on the Summit Rd I was thinking I should turn back, it's going to get cold, but I hadn't been on the bike for over a week and was trying out the Vibranitors to see if my fingers still get the tingle.... and well I kept going.

Verdict on the Vibranators.... they are good, not the be all and end all but certainly good.

Can still get things to buzz but over all I think they are buzzing less and over less of the rev range.

Yeah, there's still vibes but no sore hands.

I would if I could... But send I can't get a clutch cover gasket in this country:mad:.. Get yer shit togeather yamaha..

Just make your own from a sheet of gasket paper

I used to make mine out of old weetbix packets and lots of gasket cement. Rub some oil on the edges of the thing you need a gasket for then stamp it onto the cereal box of your choice and get cutting. Worked a treat on my old 90cc for years!

Looking at the weekend weather any body keen for a ride somewhere?

Ok, how about this, just to try to consolidate all plans into one.

For those that are keen to ride out by the river, meet at the end of Weedons Ross Rd, in the car park at 11am. Here http://goo.gl/maps/e9sXB

Then we'll go for a hoon up to about Intake Rd, here http://goo.gl/maps/QnV4S

There's lots of choice track wise, twisty or open, and it saves 2 different groups hoping to bump into each other somewhere out in the trees.

I'm heading out with Ewen so there'll be at least two 2 smokers out there :)

Sound good? Any other ideas, let us know.

Me and a mate rode up Southside of waimak to gorge bridge then cut thru Whitecliffs and up the Mount Hutt access rd to the top. (see photos in XR650 thread) - I didn't realise it is open to the public (for walking access), you other boys should go up for a spin, grouse road but be warned there was quite a bit of ice in shadows.
Came back down and picked up a third mate in town at 1500 and shot thru Purau to Port Levy then over gravel to Little river then up to Bossu rd around to Wainui. Then up stock route and down into Pigeon Bay and back thru Port Levy again to Christchurch in time for the product launch of the new KTM 1190 Adventure at Superior motorcycles at 1800...mmmmm free beer and subways :headbang:
Awesome bike, lots of new technology but I'm afraid its a bit to road orientated for my liking, lots of plastic to smash and all models fitted with road tyres

Hi mate, seen you getting out and about on the Busa in the ongoing WRN thread.
I'm still kinda in recovery mode after the QBW ride, just finished replacing the handlebars, borrowed the plastics for my handguards from the set on the Transalp to replace a broken one, got the tool roll all over the lounge floor (it's dry now but I'm using some of the tools).
Doing the Air Filter tonight, the washing bit, hope to oil it tomorrow night.

I haven't seen the local dirt roads recently but look forward to getting out again soon.
I imagine they (like the Bossu area) have a few greasy spots mixed in with the gravels especially with all the rain currently happening. The basic Waimak south bank roading to the gorge should have some big cool slippery bits now.
Pyramid Valley area usually gets gooey too.
Be good to get a sunny weekend to have a go... just be nice to clear some bills first.

Now that you are an expert river crosser (after Queens Birthday) what flow rate would be considered uncrossable?

Ha ha, I think the kind of bottom, wether the rocks are round and/or have growth on them makes a big difference but yea I feel I got better at it over that weekend until burning out energy wise.

For Lees Valley I tend to agree with ADVGDs site....
Rough guidelines for safe crossing
1 to 3 cm3/sec : Easy and safe to cross
3 to 5 cm3/sec : Safe to cross, may get a little deep/swift in sections
5 to 8 cm3/sec : Can be challenging, you may need use braids to get across
8 cm3/sec + : Potentially unsafe to cross.

With the river that low the meter was said to be a little less accurate (don't see that notice now) so we may still make it but once she's reading over 10 I would be getting very doubtful even with an inaccurate meter, I'd still wonder at 8.

I went in at Harrs Rd, the last time I tried getting in down by the 4WD track they had concrete blocks with cheese cutter wire blocking the road across the stop bank all the way down to the river.

Me and Badblackbuell did the Le Bons Bay Route today, all the roads were clear and reopened. The Main Akarora Rd was down to one lane controlled by lights.

Ok it's been a while....Who's keen for a dayride Sunday?
I'm throwing a couple of options out there and we'll go with the concensus

Option A: A squirt around Banks Peninsula...through Port Levy over to Little River around Bossu to Wainui etc...u know the route
Option B: Southside of Waimak to Oxford, thru Lees Valley then McDonald Downs ($10 koha) to Waikari then Up to Lake Sunmer and Back via Lees Valley and Rangiora

Both have opt out options for those short on time

Are you guys still doing this day ride?
If you don't mind another one tagging along, what time and where will the meeting place be?
