Not much of a difference (maybe 10-15 minutes) if you go straight there and inland is great road - but presume you will need to juice up in Kaikoura so reckon you may be right

Fantastic weekend camping up the Clarence reserve ( actually stayed in flash DOC huts ) me & TA had the hut all to ourselves. Just looking at the maps again and GPS track, we missed the Seymour Hut, actually almost went there by accident on the way back out both times I went back from where the ranger was stationed at the old cobb cottage.
Looks like the Seymour was through the gate where all the cows were. Kenny pulled up to the gate I think leads to it before turning round to go up the hill where I was pointing where we then caught the ranger the first time on the way out.
Flash and i both went one gate further before turning back, we could see the hut but I didn't realise that was one of the ones we could visit before I pointed out it was not the way out.

As for photos I only took a couple with the cheap phone and they're not worth posting. Got some ok gopro video though... but only just saved it to the PC, not even created an Adobe Premiere project to load it in to yet.

great week end/ride guys..thanks..

I had a little issue with the bike after we parted in the clarence.... it stoped... just no go...
pulled the plug checked the spark..all good... then I noticed the EFI light on the dash was on..
bloody hell this is all I need... dead injection... started looking for the prob.... Then underground
comes around the corner... So togeather we tracked the prob down to a plug that had fallen
out of the fuel pump... guess I never pushed it all the way home when I put the tank back on
a few weeks back... It's bit of a worry in the middle of the Clarence with a dead motor...

That looks like it could be day trip-able if I trailered the DRZ to Hanmer (otherwise I wouldn't be able to walk for a week), or maybe head up in the morning and take the tent/get a house for the night.

Definately keen to give it a go while it's open, hopefully the 4wd dickheads won't go through when it's wet and fuck it for everybody.

Just down the Molesworth then had a bit of a nose around the river at Hamner and Hanmer itself (hadn't been in a while) then inland route to Kaikoura. Started to go around Port Underwood road but it was quite late and I got really bad hayfever from the Molesworth (I usually don't even get hayfever!) so common sense kicked in and u-turned to the main road home (not to mention the sore arse ).

Yup! Enjoying it as much as time allows :) Going to take a while to work out the range though. I did 235kms to one fill and then ran out above Kaikoura at 198kms but I have no idea what speed I was doing then as it was dark already. I think I'll stick to fuel tests during the day too just in case next time there isn't any moonlight when the lights flick off XD

Speaking of, if any of you lot are interested in trips during the week give me a yell. I'm really struggling to get time off on the weekends at the moment.

Well I'm back in Hanmer now after an awesome day. It seems all the plans I made I did backwards: did Shoshi's back roads to Hanmer first thing - that was awesome, thanks for the suggestion and for putting the route together. Then meet up with a couple of pommie riders and went with them into the Rainbow first and that was awesome. I waved them goodbye at Edwards and had a nosey in there, that was awesomer ! Carried on to Mailings where they were just coming out, so I went for a sifty up there - even more awesomer! It was sometime in there that I remembered I hadn't filled up at Hanmer (oops!), so it was was time for some soft hands if I wanted to get out of the Molesworth!
After Mailings is a photo at lake Tenyson and then over Island saddle and on to the Severn Rd turnoff. It's a real pleasant track through there and fairly easy going. Got on to the Molesworth rd and mozied out to Jollies pass still nursing the fuel. At the top Jollies I took a wrong turn and ended up descending a VERY steep service track. At the bottom I was able to let myself out a locked gate which was very lucky cos by now I had neither the fuel nor the traction to climb out if wanted!
So 360km, 7:40hrs riding, 22l fuel, a stout and a steak and mushroom deep dish pie and we are a tired and happy bunny - pretty tempted to flag the ride home and nip over to the pools!

Would be good practice for those that are doing the Dusty Butt, only difference is there should be no nighttime riding for the group.

We rode this track in a group of 8, yesterday, on our way home from a trip to the Kahurangi Lighthouse. Was 32-degrees, and just a light breeze - a great day for riding.

Here's a photo I took at the most scenic point - the western half of the track is mainly shingle-based in a wide valley (lots of very small streams to cross + one river), before it changes to grass as it follows the river downstream for the second half. Easy on a big bike, even 2-up. Not that we were - the Kahurangi trip is definitely not for big bikes (too much quicksand!).

Hmm, s'posed to be raining all weekend but starting Sat in the PM. Poos.

A question to all you lot with aftermarket exhausts: Do you have Spark Arrestors in? Is it something that is needed for example when exploring places like tomorrow?

I ask because the new muffler I have has a removable inner baffle thing with a spark arrestor attached. The bike goes heaps better with this new muffle but even better without the centre thing i.e. a straight pipe. Not too loud, not as loud as I know many of you are, but the bike really responds.

So, do I leave it in and put up with medium power or take it out and enjoy many more go beans?

Ok that's 2 questions ...

Got home an hour and a bit ago, I'll not be riding again this weekend, got some maintenance to do now and due to have some quality time with J.
Airhawk still great, after 6 days with the Airhawk on the stock WR seat I was starting to get a little sore so adjusted the air pressure today at Omarama on the way home... that changed the feel and fixed the pain all over again, try do that with a gel seat.
As far as sitting goes I felt better at the end of todays ride (from Alexandra to Macetown and then home to Christchurch) than I did at the end of yesterday. Should have tweaked the Airhawk pressure a day earlier.

Have a good one tomorrow, I'll see ya all another day.

Was feeling a bit guilty shirking long overdue work but the rain has made up my mind, I guess I have to be responsible at least some of the time :spanking:

Re spark arrestor, I was more thinking is it a requirement for riding on DOC land, simply a good idea when in highly flammable areas, a legal WOF requirement, etc.

Got the Elefant fired up this weekend, and went to Akaroa 'smorning to test the current map - pretty good results! Returned via the Devauchal stock route, Cooptown stock route, and Western Valley Rd to Port Levi, Gebbies and Summit Rd, all good so far, then decended Worsley's track - ermm yeah, not really suitable for 'big bikes', 'specially when greasy. Hadn't really intended to take the shine off the new paint job on the first day out!
:no::no:

It's running at 7.3l/100k and feels like it's making about 70-75hp on the stock cat exhaust so there's a wee bit of room for further improvement although it did register a new high speed and didn't give much away to a DS1000 so I'm pretty content with hows it's turning out so far

Yup brave looks a lot like stupid with the benefit of hindsight ! I hadn't done it before but had seen Peety's gopro video - but the problem with gopro is the wide angle always reduces the scale of the terrain - it was much bigger/deeper than I had bargained on !

:shit:

Yuh 19" front currently wearing an E-09, when that's gone that rim gets something like an Anakee and the 21" in the shed gets the next knobbly. Though I have to say I have NO complaints about the E-09 on DRY tar. (Unscrubbed in the wet was a different story though!)

Cheers for the company today Flash and Greg (handle?), plenty amusing, shame the Old Le Bons Track didn't work out for the big bikes today - perhaps a rematch on the 450s might be in order some time soon ? Thanks too for the encouragement at Birdlings Flat I probably wouldn't have re ridden that shingle section again without your encouragement and getting the Ele to 'float' was one of the highlights of the day!

I've now put 500km on the re-incarnated Elefant and I'm pretty happy with how it runs, I'm still on the first draft fuel map on a home built ECU but I can't fault it to ride. But will check it on a dyno soon to get it really dialed. Got to get some luggage on it now and get the GPS mount finalized and I think we not far off ready...

See you all (or most of you) in 12 sleeps!

Yeah that be the one, the pig was grunting carrying a 38 rear

Not this year, got bit on.

Anyone booked into the top 10 shit-hole camping ground if you have paid to have
a bed made up, make sure before you hit the fart sack that it consists of
more than a sheet and a duvet cover, and if its the cell beside the toilet asked
to be moved so you are not woken by punters all hours of the morning.
Have a fellow biker spit on you in the morning to save using their shower.

Have a good blast all going ...

Peeteey if you get no answers, found plenty on google about comparative rims when I
was looking, you may have to change the bearing for your axles (could look on bikebandit)
Was looking for awhile for pig rims - $400 to $600 seemed to be the average, last month
scored cr250 rims with tyres, sprocket, brake disks for 90 bucks off trademe

So anyway went for a ride Thursday in glorious sunshine while all you other boys n girls were stuck at work, quite eventful in the end.
Went through Purau to Port Levy then over to Little River. The Road to Little River had "Road closed" signs at the start, needless to say I thought I better go and investigate.
About 1km up, the road was totally washed out at a culvert (yes I took photos and no I can't get the bloody things to download) however there was a 30metre long rock garden section leading to a 1 metre deep washout prior to a concrete culvert that I had to build a ramp to climb onto. On the other side of the culvert someone had used a hay bale to bridge the gap between concrete and road so I carried on, there were quite a few trees down but they had already been chainsawed up. The road has suffered quite a bit of damage but only the culvert n rock garden would have stopped a two wheel drive car. After a coffee at Little River I went up Reynolds Valley Rd to Bossu rd then down to Birdlings flat hoping to have a blast along the beach, unfortunately the canal had been bulldozed open to drain Lake Forsyth so I had to return via Little River to CHCH.
A good day out even if I was Nigel no mates!

Start with full tank and it shouldn't be a problem it's just over 300km.

I REALLY didn't enjoy that deep, grabby gravel! I must've been clamping on with me legs, the inside of my knees is killing me!

Nice to christen the new beast with some mud too, I even had to lie it down at one point, just to make sure the mud got everywhere of course

Yesterday was one of the rare occasions that I didn't have a lie down all day although a gust of wind nearly done me on the way back to SH 1.
Anyone record the route yesterday because I would like to figure out where we actually went?
I might attempt Lees Valley tomorrow river levels dependent (looks ok at the moment) if there is anyone interested.

Hi all. I see a few of you have recently been over random spur road from Culverden to cheviot? How wet and muddy was it? I'm thinking of going this weekend. My ktm990 has a tkc80 on the front and mitas E07 on the rear.

Is this a really dumb idea? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Probably depends how good you are at recovery from a fall or from simply being stuck.
That tyre combo should see you right for a lot of things but will spin (and make slow progress while it does) quite a bit in a few places up Random spur at the moment.
If you have a helping hand with you or maybe just a good keen attitude and strength to spare I'd say go for it, it has got to be one of my favourite roads on the WR.
The big bikes generally get through but with a bit of side stepping and a little push and shove.
I think the worst of it was/is in fairly short patches but hard to tell from the WR, it's all just fun on that.

These (from the guys earlier posts) are all Random Spur IIRC.
First 2 same spot.

3rd is further along and more typical.

thanks TA. I reckon I'll give it a go. I saw the pics from that ride and its looks like it was a challenging but fun day out.
I'll air the tyres down for the sloppy stuff and take my time. Lucky I'm big enough to pick it up if I have to, and I'll take a mate to give me a hand:laugh:

Something else that just occurred to me is that there is probably more slippery up hill stuff when going from Culverden to Cheviot as we did where the slipperyness will be spinning rear wheels.
Doing it Cheviot to Culverden would be slippery down hills in those same places, may be more of a worry to the front end washouts and less of a problem with drive.

28th April 2014, 20:54
