I actually really love both Lorenzo and Stoner for the above mentioned
Each of them do their contrasted styles so well and both are poetry in motion

The intelligent Dennis Noyes and his take on Rossi and Ducati http://moto-racing.speedtv.com/article/motogp-noyes-notebook-he-said-red-said/P1
Thanks for that link mate. Sure is an interesting read. Ducati must be kicking themselves for letting Stoner go.
I am sure Rossi could round up sponsorship/funding/team support to run his own team - may be little other options for him in Moto GP - surely he must have pissed off Yamaha and Honda in the past?

NO, NO NO. Jorges classic and smooth style is poetry in motion. We are comparing here a classy Spaniard to a brash unappealing descendant of Convicts. The only good thing going for him is the suspension he uses!
By the way...I'm a huge fan of Lorenzo's! But...classy Spaniard? Didn't he used to have HUGE tanty's and throw things around and curse and swear at all and sundry? He's been sited for dangerous riding too I believe? That's yet to happen to Stoner.

This from Marco Melandri. OK, I know he's in SBK these days but he did win multiple GPs on a satellite bike, and he does post in English as well as Italian, which makes him a gent, so...

KRjr's timing comments re Rossi could equally be applied to Stoner. He climbed onto the Duc at the perfect time with a good bike (proven by Capirossi and Bayliss) and a tyre advantage with the Bridgestones. Then jumped off the Ducati pendulum going backwards onto the Honda pendulum swinging forwards. Timing is everything and Stoner has done brilliantly picking his rides.
. The Duke is an enigma to everyone but a certain Honda rider.
Everyone keeps writing about Stoner as though he could jump on the Duc and win the championship...it's just not the case. 2010 in his last season on it he had 5 DNF's, and 4 races where he finished off the podium (3 x 5th and a 4th), to finish 4th in the championship....behind Rossi who missed 4 races with a broken leg. Stoner scored 225points to Lorenzo's 383.
Lets face it the Duc of recent times is an enigma to every bloody one, including that certain Honda rider. If Stoner was on the GP12 he'd be just as fucked as Rossi and Hayden, maybe even more so because i reckon he'd crash more often trying to flog the dead horse. After breaking himself one too many times it'd be Stoner, not Rossi, who'd be scanning saturday's paper for Situations Vacant in WSBK in 2013.

15th April 2012, 06:20
I'd agree that even Stoner struggled to get his head around the Duke , but so far only he has been able to be even remotely competitive on it. Could he win a championship on it, of course not , as KRjnr talked about he had to consistently over ride the bike resulting in more crashes & little chance for a title. Rossi looked at Stoners telemetry & said he would not be riding it in that extreme style, look at the results or lack of them.
The Dukes remain an enigma, I must admit I really believed Rossi & more particularly Burgess would get on top of it but apparently not.

The 1000cc Ducati was no doubt quite different to the 800cc Stoner first rode. And who says the Bridgestones were the superior tyre?
Stoner would more than likely have four or more titles had he been on either the Yamaha or the Honda the whole time. It obviously pains a lot of people...but he's the fastest guy in the world on a motorycle right now. Has been for a while.

Many a top racer wether it be moto-x or road racing has had to have operations to fix it mate. Doubt people like Freddie Spencer or Nicky Hayden could be classed as either unfit or novices.

Yip, its a bit of a prick of a thing to 'catch". I have had it occur twice to me, in both cases it was on a new bike and i had not 'set up" bars, pegs, seat height to how i like them. Tight riding gear is another cause also.
Its weird how just a small change to bar height or angle can totally eliminate the problem (or cause it)
The other thing that is difficult to comprehend for many is just how damm hard you are pulling on those bars to make the bike steer (particularily for fast turns), - evidence of this is when a handlebar will 'spin" on the staunchion - but when you come into the pits to adjust it back in a hurry, - you need a mate or a big hammer to pull on it.........

Yep. Every now and then I'd get it 'out of the blue'...and it ain't fun. When racing moto-x, it was normally me having the death grip on the bars! Hard to remind yourself to relax sometimes when a 450 4t or 500 two stroke is doing it's best to stomp on your head.
And you're absolutely right about the forces involved. More than most people would ever imagine!

Had to laugh reading the latest edition of 'Kiwirider' magazine.
The Bottom Line by Darren Sweetman starts of by him saying "Anybody that knows me knows that I can be very opinionated on most subjects, ecpecially the riding of motorcycles.
Those people also know that I am opinionated for a very good reason. I know what I'm talking about when it comes to riding"
He then goes on to say "Stoner relies 100% on his traction control where the other three riders actually control the bike themselves"
What a crock of shit. It's pretty well known that Stoner turns his TC way down compared to other riders, his own team mates have all commented over the years it's his incredible throttle control that makes him such a weapon. He was able to ride the Ducati well and steer it with the rear wheel with the TC turned way down, something no one else has been able to do.
Have you not seen pics of Stoner full lock sideways on a dirt bike while still basically wearing nappies Darren? It's all about 'throttle control' in the dirt. You of all people should know this.

As you say Its very well documented that Stoner doesn't use as much traction control, so the complete opposite to what Darren said even what he said about Lorenzo and Pedrosa was opposite I reckon????
I dunno how the heck he or the publisher (if we give Darren the benefit of the doubt) could get it so wrong?? Doesn't say much for SBK school??
I don't personally know Darren but that seemed really strange??

Awesome GP BTW was in welly so watched it Monday morn at Donnelly's house farkin good race I reckon.

Thanks mate good read about the only option that I could see he didn't put forward was that Suzuki seize the moment and re-enter Moto GP with Rossi on board.
Now that would make sense for Suzuki and Rossi. They'd get a great development team in Rossi and Burgess and he'd get a bike that had quite good potential in its last few races in Moto GP.
Just a left field scenario, but it'd be interesting watch.

I think he's obviously just another hater than can't admit the thruth. I sold him a bike a while ago, and we touched on the subject then.
And hate to say this (nah...I don't really), but I think Stoner did indeed show he's still the fastest man in the world in Qatar. The ease with which he gapped the others must have them shitting their pants once again. Arm pump up is a nasty thing, as I'm sure you'll know. He'll get it sorted and come back strong.
Be an awesome race in Jerez next weekend, but I reckon that'll be teween Lorenzo and Pedrosa there with Stoner fighting the rest for third.
It's pretty much Stoner's bogie track.
And yep...the Rossi thing is indeed sad to see. No one but a true sadist would like to see such a great champion look so down and out.
Despite what people may think, I'm certainly not enjoying it. Far rather see him giving the others at the front shit.

The post-race interview was a classic. Jorge and Dani said how satisfied they were, then Casey explained that he developed arm pump very early and tried to adopt a smoother riding style, while he was riding away from the others. Then he said he was happy that he'd shown he was the fastest rider. Zoom back to Jorge and Dani looking a bit glum (though with Dani that's how he always looks).
Unlike you and your mate Darren Sweetman, I can't tell much about a rider's style by looking at him. But for what it's worth, I agree that "Casey relies 100% on his TC" is bollocks. They all use their TC and they all need to trust it do what they expect, but that's not the same as saying they'd be unable to adjust if they didn't have it. Many other riders have commented on Casey's incredible throttle control and I suspect he'd cope without TC better than anyone else.

Yeah I thought it was funny too. I don't claim to know all there is to know regarding bikes and racing. But I think it's pretty plain to see who is ragged and on the edge agressive (Stoner) and who is smooth and incredibly precise (Lorenzo). Chalk and cheese those two.
But yeah...the whole Stoner and his TC thing is a total crock, always has been. You don't win as many dirt track titles as he has not knowing what fantastic throttle control is. Like Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson etc before him...they all knew how to do it at high speed on the dirt first.
FWIW...if I was to tell someone the best racer to watch if you want to be a good racer, it'd be Lorenzo I'd be teling them to copy. He's a fucking robot. Like Eddie Lawson was.

He confirms what I and others have been saying, the V , with the current tyres , just dont work,
by definition the cog is placed rearwards , unloading the tyre under acceleration, making it run wide ( think chopper !)
possibly braking as well though Im not sure on that
The rev limiters I was unaware of and may place more emphasis in cornering , not sure
If I were Rossi I would stay at Ducati , use the Italian way of doing things , pull strings and save all faces , Phillip Morris , jb , his and Ducatis

Stoner is smarter about where he hangs it out & how than anyone else at the moment . Does Stoner have better throttle control ?? Through the infield at Indy a couple of years ago the bikes could all be heard having the electrickery chime in except for Stoner. Everyone said he had the trickery turned down, nope it was just the same as Haydens bike , just better throttle control.
Lorenzo comes from 250's & reminds me of the Ago's , Sheenes & co who were used to bikes that needed smooth riding & good corner speed. Stoner reminds me of Roberts who came from a dirt track background & is quite happy to mix things up a bit, getting loose & slidey is quite normal for them. Stoner is quite good at evaluating the fast way round a corner & modifying his style to suit , he likes the electrickery toned down , it enables him to go faster, he is not simply a strong right wrist.

Stoner's arm pump has been attributed by several sources to a new pair of gloves. He had worn the previous pair for an unusually long time. (Considering that his gloves are free. ) This is not considered by the pundits to be a superstition thing, more a matter of comfort.
Jerez is apparently waaay different to Qatar as to the demands on the rider, shorter straights, less likely to induce pump, so we may not know if the problem is cured for a while yet.
Another rider (Spies?) reportedly gets the crew chief to break his gloves in before he uses them in a race.

Most of the time yes. But I'm sure there are plenty of corners where it's best to square them off early and get the fuck outta there.

Well, I was excluding Ducati for the meantime. Hopefully not too long.
I wouldn't judge Spies by his last outing. He had crashed twice during the weekend and later said that in the race the bike didn't feel right.
On Monday we should all have a better idea if that was right or not.

Well that FP2 created more questions than answers.
Rossi led the time sheets for most of the session until Pedrosa went under his time.
Neither Rossi nor Hayden can even hazard a guess as to why the bike is so good in the wet when the problems they have in the dry should be even worse in the wet. Rossi wants it to rain until Valencia.
Both Dovizioso and Crutchlow had wheel spin problems and couldn't get the power to the ground, but they're both ahead of Spies?
David Emmett reports, "There was an odd little scene in the Yamaha garage. Couldn't quite catch it, but it had the whiff of toys being ejected from the perambulator." Wonder who that was? Probably not Lorenzo.
If Stoner has such masterful throttle control, why is he only fourth? He should have an even bigger advantage in the wet. His "superior throttle control" might also be up there with Rossi's pregnant girlfriend.

Casey Stoner dismissed the idea out of hand, saying that he had never found a use for intermediate tires, preferring to run either full wets or chance it on a slick. Cal Crutchlow, however, viewed it differently: if conditions were to be anything like they were on Friday, then his preference would be to start on an intermediate, and hope that it would last the difference. With intermediates having been banned since the introduction of the single tire rule, Crutchlow would instead choose to start on a rain tire, and then pit early and gamble on it staying dry enough to use slicks. </A> And more.

Audi know how to take a flakey little company that relies entirely on image to sell anything and turn them into a successful business that moves 10x the number of units they used to. Vale is a sales gold mine that Ducati isn't really taking advantage of. Depends on whether Audi can be bothered sorting things out to put him back at the top of the game or not.

Hayden front row, Rossi 13th... and beaten by de Puniet on a CRT bike. Those CRT bikes look like scarey mofo's.
Spies 1.5 secs behind his teammate and then is reported as saying the following after speculation his position may be under threat from Dovi :-
"I don't care," said Spies. "Dovizioso has been in the series about triple the time that I've been here and he's had his chance at factory seats.
"I think that people know his ability and what it is. It's fourth to sixth place finishes and that's not bad but it's not Casey or Jorge for sure."

Spies is feeling the heat, but not as much as Rossi.
Ducati ignored the comments of all the riders who had trouble, when Melandri told them the bike was no good Ducati directed him to a psychologist. When Stoner won, the bike was obviously great. When he crashed it was his fault. So nothing was done to sort things until Rossi arrived.
Melandri has had a recent rant in the Italian press. We'll need to wait for an accurate translation but apparently he is angry with Ducati for not listening to the riders, and he's angry with the press for blaming him for the shortcomings at the time. It was only when Rossi failed to get to grips with the bike that the Italian press acknowledged there might be problems with the bike.
It seems though that there are only two problems with the Duc: the engine, and the frame.

Stoner finally won at Jerez, eh! Good to see Lorenzo keeping him honest too. Was hoping Dovizioso and Hayden might keep up with Pedrosa and Crutchlow as there was some entertaining passing in the opening laps... Apparently (according to their post-race tweets), Dovi wasn't feeling good on the bike but feels they can get there, while Nicky admitted his early abuse of the tyres meant he couldn't keep up the pace. It also looked to me that Rossi might have enjoyed his race battles somewhat (even if they were far further down the field than he would prefer)... Seemed a bit more upbeat post-race too.

Wanna bet that if Marquez makes it to MotoGP the "rookies must ride satellite bikes" rule gets bent way outa shape, if not broken? I note that there's already talk of rules being "bent" this year. It all adds interest I guess.
Never said he hadn't impressed me, just that he seemed like an arrogant douche
Granted he seems to be on form this year! Awesome to see new blood! Hopefully he goes from strength to strength (not that it will help that ego of his, but hey maybe that's why he is doing so well??)

I was thinking after the race, in parc ferme, that the three aliens get on too well.
Yes - down from four aliens to three...............
Bradl has done better on the LCR than anyone, including Stoner so who knows?
Spies? I can't understand him. One would have thought the thous wuld would suit him better than the 800s.

The remark "better than Stoner" was based on the fact that (so far) he hasn't biffed like Stoner did while trying to make haste on a less than perfect MotoGP bike <_<

Personally, if I was a team manager, I'd rather have a guy that puts it on pole in his second race, and nearly wins his third. Get much more tv time for starters. Old rule...you can teach a fast guy to stop crashing easier than you can make a slower guy faster.

Like the Moto2 boys did with Marquez at Jerez after his move on Luthi at Qatar, I think the big boys won't be afraid to put Cal in his place if he gets too boisterous.

Obviously it didn't work, so they up the ante and one of the Moto3 lads got hisself banned for Portugal..

Na Honda are happy having the two of the three best riders in the world till Rossi is well gone from Moto GP :)
Damn good poke at him at the end of that one to.
hahah First time I've ever seen in print the Idea that Rossi might front Suzuki's return
That was my guess in a previous post and I reckon its his last chance that or WSBK.
I doubt they will bring a bike from 11th to consistent podium's on one season ( unless it rains every race) so the Ducati is pretty screwed till they start listening to the riders. Seems to me the rumors coming from Ducati are the same over the years for Stoner and now Rossi, they simply aint getting what they need out of the bike for Moto GP. Checca seems to be able to compete in WSBK tho on the 1098. Maybe if this season with Rossi keeps up like it is and he quits we will see Ducati leave Moto GP?? Dunno that would be a big call.
Anyway last GP was really good.
Great ride by Stoner
Great to see Lorenzo can compete
Great to see Danni admit he fucked up his own race by not trying hard enough
Great ride by Crutchlow
From the comments after, Front tyre choice seemed to get the blame for the differences! Cant wait for Estoril this weekend :)
Just as a last comment I watch the last F1 race! Haven't watched it for a couple of years since it stopped on poor mans TV! Farken good actually!! Lots of cars, lots of passing, by jeepers they have certainly turned that procession around into a damn good race! I'm not suggesting bikes go for the Kers ( passing boost thing) thing but the changes to the F1 race model make better viewing :)

Funny thing is, apparently the Ducati isn't even a full litre, the best guess is it's around 920cc. They kept the capacity a bit lower to get a higher red line. Even with the 920cc the electronics kick in through the mid range cos those bikes are producing too much torque, let alone the full litre engines of the other companies. So they use a smaller capacity to get a higher red line and a wider spread of revs while still making the same as the others through the mid range.
Clever. Shame the engines the wrong shape to make the bike handle at the extreme limits those guys ride at.

And man I can't wait for brno....though I will be by myself so will be a bit random, not like any of you might have guessed but gp is very exciting and topical in our household and we both get very excited and talk about everyone and what they are doing a lot so I will be talking to random people, who will no doubt not understand a word I am saying!
But have to say I did book my accommodation with pole position travel, its just a a shitty bed in Brno with track transfers etc + party on the friday, not normally a huge fan of organised things but this has been really easy (all the good accommodation was booked out already!!! and after Valencia I really cant be fucked organising transport on the way to-from the track)

another odd qualifying session what with possible rain and then the stoppage.and the slower bikes getting in the way...but thats how it goes.....i know they fight for the front row but to be honest it doesn't seem to mean a lot where you started after the first few corners......seems tyre choice will again determine the winner....but hopefully with crutchless and spies up there the onda will get a contest.....so it looks like a shell game again....stoner, pedrosa lorenzo....pedrosa lorenzo stoner......lorenzo pedrosa stoner...lorenzo stoner pedrosa.....or....does anyone think spies or crutch and divi can get there?.....one fast lap is one thing.....25 is another.....
also...someone above said the rain will provide the ducati with a better chance and that this showed the obvious flaw in the bike....does this mean the front end? i.e without confidence in the front end the ducati is not breaking as fast as the others and therefor not getting around as fast??...is it really that simple? oh and when it rains the other bikes are reduced to the same "speed" due to the rain and it is this that evens the bikes up??...just asking....:)

I didn't get that either.
I note that Boy George has implied that Crutchlow is dangerous. These thoughts probably prompted by the thought that he has to get round Crutchlow to get to the front.
Dovizioso has criticised Crutchlow's riding style as being a WSBK style inappropriate in GPs. Eugene Laverty suggested Crutchlow refer to Dovi's "250 style".
There is a certain potential for entertainment in all of this. Crutchlow has more in common with Super Sic than I realised.

I want to believe Moto3 will be any different, but when you see guys like Fenati coming through I feel like I should be excited. But the reality is, I can't help but think "oh great, another boy wonder". At this rate I feel like the only thing that will make for really compelling watching is if they start broadcasting the Red Bull Rookies.

Yeah although I hope no one gets caught up in one and dragged around by the bike.
I hate bark busters etc. Never used em as a mate I used to race moto-x with went over the bars, got his arm between the bars and the busters, and snapped his arm clean in half.

It used to be illegal to use 'em in MX (probably for that reason).
In enduro they were a god send in terms of having yer clutch or brake pulled on, avoiding broken fingers and broken levers. I've still got the spare levers I used to carry on my IT200N, because unlike previous bikes, I never broke 'em.

Interesting how consistent the top few are, the top 4 or 5 are doing on average mid 1.37's and Rossi is mostly doing on average mid 1.38's. 1 Second in it or thereabouts.

Looks to me like Stoner is becoming very adept at managing the gap. Lorenzo's onboard footage showed him getting a front wheel near the outside, but that was about it — Lorenzo wouldn't (couldn't?) go around the outside, and Stoner just kept opening that gap back up to about a second.
Hard to tell if (Casey's) Honda is good on tyres as it seems he's always sliding around anyway! ;)

Good race repeat of the last one really, bit of a pattern forming with Casey a fraction better than Lorenzo and Lorenzo a fraction better than Pedro.
At least Rossi seems a bit more positive :) The Eurosport guys are betting the Duc is a 6th place bike and thats best it will do for the rest of the season.

Hate to say it but I thought Marquez management of his race it Jerez was masterful, very mature.

He's incredibly fast but I don't like his lack of concern for other riders. He'll punt someone off (his fault), they'll get hurt and he'll only be concerned about how it ruined his lap time. For example, after he rammed Wilairot at Phillip Island in statements he said the minimum he could about it and at no time did you get the impression he was sincere or sorry.

That's just being picky. It's on the track at the same time as the full prototypes and they're racing for the same points, not a separate championship. Besides, it's looking like a couple of the full prototype riders might be getting regularly embarrassed by the end of the season.
