I feel there is also a social element to it. Politicians by nature make the laws telling us what we can do, and often annoyingly - what we cannot do.
It grates a fair lot of men, perceiving they are getting told what to do by a woman. As mentioned it is just an element, but I do feel in some respects, it can set up turbulent dynamics from the get go.

Jacinda was like most pollies by having her good sides and her flaws. In my opinion we pretty much had the right prime minister at the time of several disasters the country went through throughout her tenure. Since the last election though, she ran out of steam and just phoned it in. Pretty much like near the whole labor government did straight after the last election night. They had a super majority and could of effected real positive change, but chose to just sorta go meeeehhh FFS. But I digress .
As a pollie, Jacindas flaws were not such that it warranted the seething hate spewed towards her.
imo - Just the usual scorn reserved for any pollie would have been suffice.

Men can be told what to do by men, and they'll grizzle, but they will (mostly) do as asked. Same men asked by a woman to do the same thing and they (the men) will question the motives, methods, qualifications, reasons, whatever. This is something that is drummed into males from birth - they are the superior species, whereas in truth, other than for a few minutes, men are largely redundant as far as the species goes.

It's all perspective huh. Like everything in life. I have had been in the position, like all of us, where there have been plenty of females in roles where I've been told what to do, teachers, employers, superiors, and of course my mother. Whether I respected them or not came down to how they treated other people and how competent they were at their role(s). Nothing to do with gender. And I'm most certain I'm not the only guy out there that feels the same way. Of course there are some insecure guys out there that can't handle a woman in a position of power, just like there are some that can't respect other races or sexuality's. But that doesn't mean that anyone who criticises a member of a specific group is therefore anti that entire group.

All I'm saying is people should be allowed to criticise a woman for legitimate reasons (other than for just being a woman without being called misogynistic.

With respect to the hate directed at her, I don't agree with that, but not because she's a woman. Instead because I feel that it does no good for our society as a whole to hate so much.

We're living on borrowed time (literally), we have been for decades but it's getting harder and harder to ignore, there's no way to fix it, and we're looking for someone to blame. The hatred is born from that insecurity.

Nothing will change with a new government. Except they'll be some new ministers to hate – or not, they'll just keep banging on about Dame Jacinda and probably end up blaming her somehow for the next three or four crises as well.

I'd just like to add that there are plenty of Men that I've called Cunts, for the same reason I call Jacinda a Cunt.

It has nothing to do with being a Woman (although - The Labour party doesn't seem too sure on what that is these days...) - it has everything to do with taking away fundamental rights and liberties and making society worse off than it was.

Funny how we never hear the cries of misandry when male politicians have hate and anger directed at them though isn't it...

The only place I recall coming across the word 'misandry' in print was in one of the books from the Game Of Thrones series.

The word misanthropy rounds out the set. Basically a hatred of mankind.

Such fun watching the anti-Jacinda misogynists whipping themselves into a lather over this. It must be unbelievably galling for them to watch this person (a woman! - how dare she!) who is so successful, so respected and who will undoubtedly earn more in the next few years than the haters will earn in the rest of their sad lifetime.

How do you ever know someone’s critique of Jacinda is misogynistic unless the author qualifies it with a phrase like Lange would have done it different or better etc.
My workplace has quite a few women in positions of power, they are all excellent at their jobs and respected. Their gender is secondary to their work performance.

Btw a few of us here would love to see what qualifies as success. Please feel free to bullet point Jacindas successful accomplishments. Anything covid related is disqualified as pretty much the whole world followed the WHO suggestions.

Never has there been an easier access to higher education and top quality technology and tools. We are at a time of great opportunity for this growing nation. All that’s lacking is the right leadership to direct the energy of our nation and youth towards an exciting future. I’m not sure whose the best for that but the fruits there for the picking.

You might like to discuss that with some teachers and tertiary educators.

There are always opportunities for individuals, but as a nation we've not been able to match even our closest neighbour in incomes or living standards for at least 30 years. There's no magic way to fix that, no matter what David Seymour says (and he's not saying anything new).

Our politics is mired in divisions from the past, short of another major crisis you won't get another leader with enough support to make any meaningful changes. Really Jacinda has done bugger all with her mandate, and even that much has given half the population conniptions.

But even so, I hope you're right.

In todays high inflation world $2M in assets would affect many people at retirement age, especially if perhaps they have a financial interest in other property after helping offspring into another expensive Auckland property.
Anyway 2.5% of 2M is $40,000!!!!, will that be a one off or yearly expectation???? It’s a lot of cash even for the well off to come up with.
And lower taxes for those under $125k will quite upset those that can only dream of earning above 100k or even half way to that…
It seems this election cycle parties are going all out to give reasons not to vote for them!

That sum would need to be adjusted annually. House prices have dropped and are currently continuing to drop, but there were houses here worth 2 million.
There'd be a lot of them in Auckland.

Because that is equality mentality of the left. A person earning say 50k a year would say it’s unfair a “rich” person (in their eyes) is on same tax rate at 120k.
It’s the same people who get shitty when someone wins 10million on powerball and say that the prize pool should never get that big it should be shared out every week instead of javkpotting.

Yes and no - I agree that random acts of violence have always happened, however as someone who used to live around that area, I cannot recall a time where a child was assaulted outside the Glenfield Maccas.

Certainly can remember numerous fights around the seedier parts of Gfield, but those were generally from pissed up Adults (which doesn't make it 'right') and not a sober kid.

When i read that article last night, they mentioned the ethnicity of the Victim being a recent philipino migrant.

Curiously nothing was said about the ethnicity of the attackers. There's some inferences that I think can be drawn here. I will wait for confirmation though.

I think most people would consider the problem to be worse than it has previously been, I can't recall people being beaten up and having things stolen outside westfield riccarton being a problem until recently, now it certainly is to the point of some schools telling their students not to go there in uniform to avoid being subject to vioience.

Saw an interesting discussion the other day regarding the increase in this sort of behaviour, one of the contributing factors identified was the normalising by social media, and the lack of consequences if actually identified. The other notable thing was that when something like this happens the most common response is to get out the phone and start filming, rather than any attempt to intervene to help the victim.

Not sure that the ethnicity of the attackers or the victims is relevant to the prevalence of this type of incident, in any case they probably weren't able to speak to the attackers to find out the details of their ethnic background and how it relates to their desire to beat up 12 year olds, but accusations of racism would be highly possible even if it was only reporting verifiable fact.

Don't know if we can entirely blame the current government, but you can probably include them along with normalising of violence in various media, previous parenting philosophies which removed consequences from actions, and a narrowing self interested view with diminishing empathy for other humans.

It's definitely gotten worse. I was having this chat with someone the other day, who happens to work primarily in Childcare - something she mentioned was that the Children we are seeing grow up now are being raised by Parents who grew up after the Anti-Smacking bill became law - She had some spicy observations around discipline in kids before and after that legislation came into effect.

She also mentioned cultural things - for example, I can remember growing up that if I was being a shit in public, it wouldn't be unheard of to be told off by an adult who wasn't my parent, same with giving a kid a smack in public in the 90s wasn't the big taboo it is now.

It was her belief (and I don't entirely disagree with her) that part of the problem is that the increase in social issues has been due to a lack of corporal discipline amongst kids.

To give the debate the other side though, I have a different friend who works in the courts and they say that the bill meant that parents who abused their kids (actual abuse, not just a clip round the ear) were no longer able to use discipline as a defense and so it's been good.

I'm guilty of sitting somewhere on the middle on this issue. I see the arguments both ways,

The other notable thing was that when something like this happens the most common response is to get out the phone and start filming, rather than any attempt to intervene to help the victim.

I don't buy the normalization behavior to be honest.

First it was Jazz corrupting our youth, then Rock and Roll, then Heavy Metal, then Violent movies, then Violent video games etc. etc.

However - on the point about filming something to get internet clout rather than help and get caught up - I agree 1000% with you on that. Something very wrong has happened in our culture where this is the behavior that people choose to take.

I'm waiting for the facts - but let me say this - if it was someone of a caucasion persuasion, then it is likely that this would be found out rather quickly and it would be plastered all over the headlines and the accusation of Hate Crime would be leveled squarely at the attackers.

That leads me to suspect what the ethnicity and gender of the attackers is.

Don't know if we can entirely blame the current government, but you can probably include them along with normalising of violence in various media, previous parenting philosophies which removed consequences from actions, and a narrowing self interested view with diminishing empathy for other humans.

I think the 3 areas you can absolutely blame the current government for is:

1: Making things economically worse for everyone.
2: Targetting otherwise law-abiding citizens with harsh penalties, whilst simultaneously going soft on serious crime.
3: Divisions in society - whether that's on racial lines with the likes of 3waters and co-governance, Medical lines with Vaccine passes etc. or the other areas where there has been a 'good' and 'bad' narrative pushed by the Government.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/news/free-wiki-judge-says-young-burglar-should-not-stay-in-jail-home-detention-imposed

“ young man who stole $15,000 worth of clothing from a store, attacked a person with gardening pruners and smashed a windscreen has been released from jail - and put on home detention instead.

The judge who re-sentenced him says that Free Usher Dani Wiki, who was 21 at the time of his most recent offending, is a young and vulnerable man, having regard to his personal background.

High Court Justice Jonathan Eaton said care needed to be taken to reduce the chance of Wiki coming out of prison a “more hardened criminal” than before.

In May this year, Wiki was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for burglary, assault with a weapon, intentional damage, receiving, driving while disqualified, breaching intensive supervision and community work, and failing to answer bail.

Wiki’s assault conviction related to an unprovoked attack on a man he knew in December 2021, when he struck the victim four hard blows to the head with a pair of long-handled pruners. He then smashed the windscreen of his victim’s car using the same weapon.

On January 30, 2022, a Honda Odyssey car was stolen in Napier.

Wiki was sentenced by District Court Judge Michael Turner, who is based in Dunedin, who began with a starting point of 53 months in prison for all the offences, which he reduced without comment to 36 months.

He noted that Wiki had a troubled background, having been born into a family with close gang involvement and exposure to violence that the judge accepted would have shaped his mindset.

Taking into account Wiki’s guilty plea, rehabilitative steps already taken, seven months on a 24-hour curfew while on bail and six months on a night-time curfew, the judge allowed a 25 per cent discount. This reduced the 36 months in prison to 27 months.

Wiki appealed against this sentence to the High Court on numerous grounds.

Justice Eaton reviewed the sentence and adjusted the starting point to 35 months in prison. With uplifts for Wiki’s prior offending and credits for his personal factors, he arrived at a sentence of 26 months.

He then allowed a further three-month reduction to reflect the time Wiki spent on restrictive bail conditions, leading to an end sentence of 23 months in prison.

This brought the sentence to below the two-year threshold at which home detention can be considered instead of prison.

ustice Eaton said, in considering whether to commute the prison sentence to home detention, he was mindful of Section 16 of the Sentencing Act, which directs judges to consider keeping offenders in the community “as far as that is practicable and consonant with the safety of the community”.

“Most particularly, I am mindful that Mr Wiki is a young man who, having regard to his personal background, is vulnerable,” Justice Eaton said.

“In my view, care needs to be taken to reduce the prospect of Mr Wiki emerging from prison a more hardened criminal than when he was taken into custody.”

Justice Eaton noted that Wiki had already served two months in prison, quashed his jail term, and imposed a new sentence of nine months of home detention.

Before his latest offending, Wiki had accumulated five convictions for disqualified driving and had prior convictions for burglary, failing to answer bail and receiving stolen property.“

We blaming Jacinda for that as well are we? Home detention was brought in long before she was PM. I distinctly recall though that when home detention was introduced we were told that it would not be used for violent offenders. Yeah right!

Periodic detention has become problematic too. The guys who supervise the work didn't get assaulted previously because people on PD were there for driving offences or theft. Now there are seriously bad bastards on PD and assaults are more frequent.

It's the expansion of Home D to people who it shouldn't be applied to Under Jacinda specifically due to the radical left-wing notions about Crime, Inequality and Injustice that are fundamentally wrong.

I'm not a huge fan of Home D - but I can accept that for some minor offences where going to Prison is too severe and a Fine is too light that an intermediate form of punishment is acceptable.

I've known, tangentially, of some people who have gone through the process who are otherwise okay people who just did something very silly one-time. Would society have been better off if those individuals were in prison? probably not.

The issue here though is that it's not a marginal case. Even if I concede all the points being made as the justification for it, it's still wrong to do so.

Violent protest is not ok and it’s certainly not ok at all in the first instance. Although some of the springbok mostly peaceful stuff turned into riotous behaviour at its conclusion that’s very different to what’s happening now.
Some people in society think it’s ok to resort to straight out violence and intimidation in first instance they are confronted with an idea they don’t like. That’s not ok.

You change your tune more often than a 1950's jukebox.

Someone with gumption has to declare a riot first though and with all the behind the scenes politics that may not be so easy...
Leaders have a playbook for this situation too, it’s quite a short book called Self Respect by Manuo Fonor ISBN 345286.4 It starts and ends on page one with Listen learn and respond....

In the end I think covid will be accepted as part of daily life and be so widespread soon that the mandates will be redundant very shortly. Either the govt will capitulate or private business will reach tipping point of not being the enforcers.
Just look at latest deaths to case number ratio, there’s no way any restrictions would be brought in if omicron was the first virus....
Jacinda has a very narrow window of opportunity to come to compromise however little and the protest will flame itself out. But carry on like a dictator just risks a tianimen square moment which would be her awful legacy and she knows it.
It doesn’t matter if protestors right or wrong a little chat would end all this... Christ even nutters with guns in a siege get the decency of some kind of negotiation....

Well when you have ONE of our supermarket chains prepared to spend $45million on new security stuff after a 300% rise in theft and 800% ruse in aggressive incidents I think we have a problem.
U til we admit we have a problem we as consumers will pay for papering over the cracks in our society caused by intergenerational poverty, and neoliberal economic policiess.

I fixed that for you, fascist.

My local is a Countdown and while I agree with your sentiment I've seen staff there be verbally and physically assaulted (barging through them with stolen goods) so yeah I support better procedures and security to protect the workers.

Jeez dude where do you live? My local is a Countdown but I have never seen anyone abusing the staff, nor have I seen or heard of anyone stealing there but I guess it does happen. Maybe the low lifes (and the desperate) choose to shoplift at the city branch?

I haven't noticed that. What I have said is the NZ is the second safest country on the planet behind only Iceland. There is crime, but there is worse crime virtually everywhere else. We don't know how lucky we are.

Somerfield. But near the Beckenham branch (which is my local) there have been a lot of Housing NZ development blocks constructed in Sydenham in the past few years. So you get a wide range of people who shop there, the wealthy from nearby Cashmere, the working class of Sydenham through to the newly introduced patched gang members in the housing development blocks. Just recently I was there and we were entertained by 3 patched Mongrel Mob members with two females and a few children, yelling obscenities to each other. It's not uncommon to see a police car there as they deal with yet another shop lifting incident.

Even if that were true… wind the clock back 5 and a half years to peak Jacinda-mania at the end of the rockstar economy from Keys and the damage to all sectors of society is just exponentially exploding upwards from that day….

Too many people don't know the facts. The IMF say our economy is doing well. National talk about it failing. The people who lack the curiosity to check believe the bull shit. OK of late some of Labour's ministers have not been helping their party, but the fact is that many people are going to vote based on misinformation.

Not really I think the Nats were watching Trump and could see that a large portion of the population believed any crap he offered. All politicians lie, that's a given. Virtually a whole campaign based on bollocks seems new somehow.

How the other side lived…. While preaching about poverty and building more housing etc

https://i.stuff.co.nz/life-style/homed/latest/133302226/stuart-nash-lists-his-character-home-on-bluff-hill-in-napier

Council records show the couple paid $545,000 for the property in 2010. It has a September 2020 valuation of $1,170,000.

Listing agent Phil Quinney of NZ Sotheby’s International Realty says the house, something of a local landmark on Milton Rd, is an “architectural gem”. It was designed by renowned early 20th-century architects Finch & Westerholm. Unusually, for a house on the hill, it has large, terraced areas of flat land, so there is enough space for a lawn, 9m heated swimming pool and a basketball “D”.

“Properties with this much space and off-street parking are few and far between on the hill,” Quinney says. “This one is divided into four distinct areas. Fruit trees and natives line the first tier for privacy, while the second tier provides a flat concrete area perfect for sports and play, and there's an electric vehicle charging station.

“The third tier is the entertainment level including in-ground pool, patio, and barbecue area - ideal for outdoor gatherings. The upper tier features a spacious lawn, and home office

The five-bedroom house, on a 1739m² site, has a stone and plastered brick construction with native timber flooring. Other character features include leadlight bay windows, timber panelling throughout the entry and formal living and dining area, and large, painted beams in the these areas. The fifth bedroom is currently used as a kids’ lounge.

Quinney says he is inviting buyers looking “circa” $1.5 million. “That figure’s not going to buy the property; it will go somewhere north of that, but if you have got a budget over that, then come and have a look.”

You can kinda understand how you lose touch with the reality of normal world if you have a luxury enclave like that to come home to.

But that side is not about putting barriers in front of success. They want you to own seven properties too if you’re willing to work hard and get there.

Labour wants you dependant so you vote for their welfare package agsin next time and if you dare be successful they want to take it away and give it someone for free that doesn’t want to work hard.

One things for sure Nash will be glad the capital gains and wealth tax hadn’t gone through

like paying tax on income earned in real estate speculation...... or tax at all.....but only if you are ubber rich..

but it turns out Luzton is wantng to turn al green afterall

It was revealed on Tuesday Luxon, the Opposition leader, ordered the Tesla last year before cancelling it. Luxon already owned a Tesla and the order was placed while National was criticising the Government for handing clean car discounts to the wealthy. but I've got a 50cc scooter and I jump on that, and I'll go up and do my odd errands and journeys that I need to do.

Luxon is an evangelical Christian In November 2019, Luxon said he was against abortion, euthanasia, He also at the time supported a "no jab, no pay" policy for sanctioning welfare beneficiaries who do not vaccinate their children.National MP Harete Hipango said Luxon stated they and the National Party strongly support COVID-19 vaccination, and described vaccination as the best protection for people and their families Yet In August 2022, Luxon refused to rule out working with Brian Tamaki, a far-right, anti-vaccine religious leader, and Tamaki's Freedoms New Zealand party.
Luxton also has trouble telling if he is in NZ or Hawaii.

Do the math on the first sentence then try and figure out why the second sentence may have a tad of relevance.

It seems that Luxon may be a bigger bullshit artist than I had expected. He talks about acquisitions and mergers but it is likely he has about zero experience in either. There is a possibility that he had a part in one in the US but he was working in Canada at the time so he wasn't involved in the latter stages.

He talks about chemistry but apparently he couldn't get on with the boss of Virgin Australia and sold that at a ten million loss to Air NZ.

Hopefully if there is still a reputable journo in this country they will write this up. Of course it would have been better if they had done so prior to the election.

There may have been some but they sold out for 55million dollars from labour. They’ve all gotten used to writing opinion pieces with splash of treaty and climate references to meet funding guidelines.

Also the editors of print and tv would dare not risk loss of ad revenue from mentioned airlines…,

There are. I like David Farrier a lot and in fact I am a paying subscriber to his substack newsletter. It's called "Webworm" and is worth a read. Give it a google. Some interesting stuff and, unlike the rest of the internet, the comments section is not a toxic cesspit of heck. You might not enjoy the topics he focusses on, which is fine, but if it does click, it is excellent. I got onto it after seeing his latest film (MR ORGAN - its on Netflix I think).

Be interesting to know who the “third party “ sponsors of this film are, smacks of an agenda to promote the idea of limiting free speech online.
I do feel sorry for Jacinda that this will be her legacy, remembered for few extreme comments that some in society made. A country of five million locked down with nothing to do, yes it’s going to be to collate a few nutter comments and make it look worse than it was.
Kinda ironic in a country that has no violent political extremism. All we e ever had was the doofus that smashed windows at Clark’s office(while no one there) and Tama iti popping off a shotgun once just to make sure protest made news.
There’s always going fo be a bell curve of opinions on any subject and there just choosing a small part. Wonder if there will be sequels for Winston Luxon or Seymourjust for a bit of balance?

That’s still only three over decades compared to what happens in other developing nations.

National MP Dail Jones got stabbed with a chisel

Jones is known as one of the few New Zealand MPs to have been injured in a politically motivated attack; in 1980, while serving as a National Party MP, he was stabbed in the chest by an elderly constituent in his electorate office leaving him with a punctured lung.[1] The assailant, Ambrose Tindall, was obsessed about a traffic ticket totaling $15.[6]
