Hi guys
Just a heads up. It looks like they're putting in a fixed speed camera in Maheno about 300m from the south boundry facing south.
Should be a good little earner for them as not many would slow in time coming round the corner going downhill.
I seen this yesterday, but i think it is one of those school warning signs that turns on between 830 and 9 and 3 to 330 cos it didnt look like it could slide up and down like the others do. and there is a school just down the road, but i cant remember seeing one of these on the other side of the road so maybe??

I hope this is the case, these are a great idea, and I bet they slow people down *alot* more than any speed camera ever would.

And the harbour rushing up to meet ya.
Did you find out about that bike in the drink?
Mate of mine rode his Triumph into it last year and it was yellow.
He was still sitting on it in the water after landing, so he was fine, but his ego suffered colossal damage and his bike was known as the yellow submarine after that.

it was wayne from otago honda, was posted early. the yellow sub that would'nt of been a good look. the thing with that road is that it does'nt matter what time of year you go down it, there is at least always one corner with clay or grit on it. you just gota be ready for it

I heard some bikes going up the valley by my place and wondered if it was some of you - how did it go?
Got rather tied up with family stuff and a rather important anniversary so a ride in the cold air didnt' make the top of the list. Hopefully next time.

yea the ride up was great, a bit frosty in places but there was no grit on the road. we meet the group from balclutha at lawrance because we left town a we bit late. apart from the cold air, which i hardly even noticed the weather was great for a ride, they picked a good day to do the run

I have a good tip for you Scorry as I notice a pattern here.
You crashed at Silverstream while in front of me.
You crashed at the Gravel sprint while posting faster times than me.
You crashed at Levels while in front of me.
Just stay behind me and you won't crash!!!

Great to hear Chris.
I will be there tomorrow - I see they have moved the start forward to 9:30 (I assume that is to allow more time for registrations?). I've got a bit of animal feeding to do before Ican get away but hope to be there between 9:30-10am. It looks like the next few days will be great biking weather

Why didn't I check in here sooner???!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got home from work about 8:30 (am) as I did overtime. Lying in bed chilling out and for the past hour have been hearing bikes going up the northern motorway ( the upside to living at the top of pine hill...).
Was thinking to myself "what the f*** is on today that's causing all the "racket"/noise-that-makes-me-wonder-why-the-f***-I'm-not-in-the-middle-of-it!!
Then I decided to find out here............
Well F*** ME!!!!!! :shit:
I need a new job!!! preferably one that does not require starting at midnight and sleeping through the day.
As I've type this the motorway has finally gone silent.
Thinking of you lot out there on the ride ---- YOU BASTARDS!!:2guns:

The BSA poker run was good. If you picked up a bike number plate somewhere between Clarkes and Dunners, biff it away. I could not believe how much it cost to get a replacement number plate. Would you believe a measley $8.80!!!! There obviously isn't an ACC levy included on that price eh!

Hi
Did you go up through Middlemarch on your ride, if you did we passed you my son was following on the green ninja (fathers day ride). Couldn't get down for the 11am start (still lambing and calving) hope to get there for your next ride.
The wet smelly stuff on the Killmog and out of Outram is that the new de-icing chemical (aceitate sp) If it is I like it better than grit, initially thought it was diesel but didn't smell right.

hey there guys long time no write been busi with uni etc...just reminding those of u i met months ago on the nice long trip (cant remember place names now) i was the youngen on the aprilia 125cc. unfortunately i have to report that some wanker who lives around me suddenly took a liking to my bike (most likly while drunk) and proceeded to beat it up...needless to say its a lot worse for wear...indicators broken, windscreen, wingmirror. and the day before when i was out for a ride it started to make a hurrendous noise thought for a moment i would be stranded 20km from home but managed to get it started again and ride slowly home.
i have decided to make it a lil project for next year the idea is reali appealing to me. my bike is almost at 10,000km so im making the assumption it needs a rebuild.the noise was worse at low revs less than 4000 but even higher i could tell something was off
ne1 have ne advice? i dont feel like being charged an arm and a leg getting it serviced again im a student!! lol
ne hints on tools or wisdom from ur own do it urself adventures would be helpful guys

What a blast of a day... slept in a little hauled my arse out of bed at around 10:30... thought I better check my cell phone... SilverGrin and crew were going to Alexandra for lunch... time received was about 09:30... bugger... texted back saying just outta bed... Phil replied say they were in Lawrence and if I hauled arse I could met them in Alex...
Got my bike gear, wallet and keys to get back into flat, cell phone... and I was off. Knowing I had a reasonable full tank shot down to Milton, and the through the gorge to Lawrence :) Then txt Phil saying "In Lawrence, Gas" but then decided I had enough juice to get me to Roxburgh.
Watching my fuel gauge get lower and lower, and start to blink as I came into Roxburgh... Top up with gas, and a quick text to SilverGrin that I am just leaving Roxburgh and I was off to Alexandra arriving maybe half an hour after them. I was lucky, the pace was up a little to make up a bit of time, but not overly stupid fast, but at a constant(ish) speed.
Quick bite to eat and a drink, and a bit of a break, then the others needed to topped up with fuel and we we off to Ranfurly where I was going to top up which gave me enough to get home. We decided to go via Middlemarch so turned off where just before hand we were passed by an ambulance...
Then onto the Kyeburn Hyde Middlemarch Road... where we caught up with the ambulance and from what I could see they were looking for something possible that a farmer or someone over cooked a corner... either that they were lost... on into Middlemarch for a coffee and a break... of to Dunedin with them nice sweepers and open roads... was a good run.
Overall even though I had to play catch up, was a great day, weather was good, not to hot, nor too cold and little wind. The roads were in pretty good condition and only a couple of patches of road works to watch out for.

There were shitloads (and that's waay more than crap-loads) of bikes heading down past Chez Scumdog this morning, sprotsbike/Harleys.crusiers - everything, just steadily streaming past .
About 25+ in dribs and drabs, biggest group had 6 or 7.
They came back up past here late afternoon, some I saw coming from the Kaka-Point road so may well have been coming back up from the Catlins route.
Any idea what group they were??
Sadly my bike needs a WOF and I had CB's bike apart while fitting heated grips or we too would have been out there, after all it was 22+ degrees and sunny!!

The afternoon ride out starts usually at 1. You can ride into the site and catch up with the other KB'rs without registering (they only check you when going into the marquee area where the band, bars and food are). You could text someone and either meet at the site or outside the Kaka POint store or pub.
OR - you could get your arse up to lawrence and ride over to the Punt?? (by 10:30)

After looking at another thread about an economy run I wondered if this might make a fun day event (or part day with another ride after it to blow out the cobwebs and frustrations !!) for the Dunedin Riders and anyone else wanting to join.
Talked about it very briefly on our ride at the PP rally today - after the most uneconomical ride I've had in a long time :2thumbsup
I know the Otago MCC has an event like this sometime but we have enough local members on a variety of bikes to make it work and make it interesting.
We would all need to start and finish at the same Dn gas station and do the same route - 100km would probably be enough? (for sanity it might be)

Why not! Gives a social focus to the day. How about a the "regular" (read boring) route via Palmy to Ranfurly (without the side excursions) compare fanciful claims at Ranfurly, then a totally non PC, carbon footprint the size of Bigfoot return via Middlemarch?
Excellent run yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed the "running in" ride with Delphinus. Great to get out there and hang out for the day again.

OK can one of the heavily addicted rally junkies - yes Dale thats you - let us know what weekends between now and the end of Nov do NOT have any rallies on. Then we can plan a date for this social economy event.
Cold Comfort - I like the way you think :devil2:
I was thinking of a loop back to Dunedin - maybe the George King Memorial drive (anyone know how far that is ? - might be some reconnaissance rides needed :niceone:)
A loop out to POrt Chalmers, over to Waitati and back to Dn might be getting close, or a bit further to include the Karitane loop.
We want this to be a social day ride that beginners can join in without being left behind so I think I still prefer a loop rather than a ride that ends in the middle of nowhere and then half the group blasts back at warp speed and leave the rest behind.
If we did one of the loops above - you could always do it again straight away and compare the fuel use?

That sounds more interesting, would be great to meet you guys and I might be able to keep up with you (on the economy part anyway) don't mind going TEC for a while

Yes the event has grown every year - 680 last year I think.
As far as kids trails go I don't think this one is that good for the real learners as their routes are basically just forestry roads most of the time and they get bloody dusty. If they are capable of doing the intermediate sections they are a lot more fun.
I should have both my boys with me this year and a new bike capable of keeping me well on the pace!! It will be the first of these rides for my younger son but he's done enough round the farm to be able to handle the intermediate stuff.
Let me know if you want to bring your kids out for a practise before the ride or have you got plenty of places for them to go?

Wee bit limited here until after lambing and tailing but then there is a lot of good trail riding and lots of places just to practise basic skills - from past experience of the organised trail rides the one skill learners need to master early on is how to stop and then get started again on a hill (or turn it around for another go) and its best to get that sorted without a great queue of frustrated dirt bikers waiting for them to get out of the way.
Have you ever gone to the track at Titri ?? (near Waihola) - not sure if you have to be an OMCC member ?? but it looks like they have an area for juniors as well as tracks for better riders. I went in for a look one day but didn't have a bike with me. ANyone else been round it ??

Leave at 6ish from outside McIver and Veitch and head down to Taieri mouth?
I say gentle as I am still getting used to riding again and am sure there are a few other people who have not had a ride in a group like this before. The road has mostly long gentle curves and the scenery's not too bad.

I agree - it is getting expensive to go on these rides, especially when you want to take a couple of kids (and they are into the adult age bracket). That said I will have my eldest son there and possibly his mate so look for us (a green KDX and a Red Gas Gas on a very old trailer!).
There is a lot of work put in by a heap of volunteers on the day so I don't begrudge the entry fee - but it does make you consider how many of these you do.
Just back form the South Island Master games in Timaru (went up in the Yellow Go Kart not the bike!) and I see on the entry that they had Trail and Motorcross events. Do you know anyone who entered because I might have a crack at it at a future one and I would like to hear how this part of the events went?

Yeah, I meant next Sunday (19th), so you have no excuse to get dirty
To Rurualman, I dont know any one doing the masters, but they had MX & I think enduro here for the masters at the start of the year, unlike last time there was no atv class:argh:. Maybe 2010.

The cost is probably cheap considering the effort that must go into organising a trails ride and for lunch and all.
Will be there and will keep a look out for you, I either be on a yellow LTR450 with a Honda TRX450 or two around it or if the daughter decides to come, it will be white LTZ400 with a yellow LT80 in front of it. I think a couple of others will be there as well. Hope to see you there.

Thats Peter Acorn's outlet. He's set it up. Should be cheaper than the other shop's selling his stuff.
