Getting up to 300 bikes in there at peak hospital visiting time could be fun...
I agree, but the carpark area extends around behind building but still a squeeze.
Ruralman, I believe there is a new cafe at the Edendale turnoff just as you leave Blueskin Bay to go up the Kilmog. Never tried it though.

i've got myself all ready for the toy run.
i didn't think you could even get projectile toys in the shape of a gun these days, especially one semi shotgun looking that ejects 'used' shells

If you want to ride with BRONZ members before hand, they are meeting at Evansdale Cafe (has an old "wild west" frontage on it), at the turn off to Warrington (bottom of the Kilmog) at 12 pm on Saturday.
Phaedrus, I bet you had fun shopping for a 'projectile toy', what are you trying to tell us about your choice of toy????

Drove over Three Mile Hill from Mosgiel today and I have to say the road is wider, not a lot of camber, very much a tamer road than before. Would like to do it on the bike, especially now that I have lost the L plate.:wari:

Just went out for a blat myself over the hill. Yes, a lot wider, but will still be a fun ride - in fact a bit more space on the twisties will make it a bit safer. There's still lots of loose gravel on the surface, so it may not pay to fang it too hard as yet.
...especially now that I have lost the L plate.:wari:

Ahh yes. That reminds me. Jantar and his Lube.
I had been working out cromwell racetrack friday and sat and didn't leave there till about 3ish, and noticed my chain was very dry.. turns out my scottoiler had run out, but figured Jantar would have some sort of lubricating substance, and sure enough he has the very stuff, scottoil, so we filled it up with that, threw a bit on the chain and good to go. Then had a nice cold drink (it was a fantastic day out there) and went on my way all lubed up ;)
He said to tell you lot to drop in if you're going past.. He has drinks and lube aplenty!
Must suck not being able to ride in prime riding weather.....

Not long home from Dunedin and came via Taieri Mouth and over the hill - they are getting well through the sealing process starting from the Taieri Mouth end. Theres only 5.6km of gravel left and by the looks of things they are going to start the next bit from the Waihola end up the big hill.
Takew it easy if you go for a look though cos theres a lot of loose stuff on many of the corners on the sealed section.
It will be a very popular loop once completed.
I was thinking that there is probably going to be an "official opening" ceremony sometime which I will hear about via my Council involvement - might be good to have a group contingent of motorcyclists ready to cruise through after the ribbon is cut. I'll keep my ears open.
Toy run was well supported again yesterday and great to be part of a big group like that.
Went up to Palmerston afterwards and stayed a bit long - got a bit wet and cold on the way back but I guess thats what the fancy riding gear is for ay

The toy run was so great, so many bikes of many different makes and models, and was I the only one there who thought the average age was 40+? Baby boomers rocking on along the highway! And it was lovely to see so many kids as well. Well done BRONZ organisers. Xaria, how did the course go on Sunday, you had a great day for it?

Have been having fun on my bike but mostly racing, so if you are interested i have put some race reports in the DR650 thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=50896&page=5). If anyone is interested I will let you know when OMCC events are on as spectators are usually free and who knows, you may want to have a go yourself.

I beleive most of the OMCC events are free for spectators as well , but I didn't join the OMCC for racing but rather the social riding so I can't really commant
Would be good to get more riders to come along for some tiki tours :D maybe also organise a few more club rides that every one is welcome to join in as well...

Not yet but I'm prodding the appropriate spots. Realistically an "official" opening probably won't happen until Feb, possibly late Jan (unlikely), to give organisers a chance to contact the groups they want there, organise supporting events etc

I like your night before idea. Either that or convince the others to make it a 2-day job. Then we can all sit around somewhere (pub...) chat, tell really tall stories about anything and everything. I love the whole ride thing but that long a trip and I think you lose too much of the getting together thing. Almost defeats the purpose of riding as a group.

I'll say this really quietly so that Mr Sensible can't hear (coz he's a long way away in ChCh, and certain activities have made him a little deaf....)
But,,,. well I kinda like the idea of sneaking up the afternoon before and staying the night at a pub/backpackers or something. Its still a decent sort of day ride from here without being the kind of Chatto Creek etc endurance thing that they're doing.
There will be a few that are planning on doing the Hokitika rally a couple of weeks later so that might put them off as well (I have a holiday house booked in Wanaka that week so won't be doing that rally)

Delphinus and I are hatching a bit of a plan - maybe go via SH8, Lindis , McKenzie country, inland Cant route, over Arthurs to Greymouth or Hokitika on day one, then come home when we pick up with the ChCh riders as they come through the next day via the West Coast.
I still have to make sure I can do this myself but I think I can get away.

Anyone interested on a bit of a ride somewhere on Monday(New Year's eve) ? - weather forecast looks pretty good. Sat looks OK but I can't go, Sun wet, Mon and Tues look great
I hadn't really decide on a route but was thinking in terms of inland - a loop through West Otago, Moa Flat Hill............... if it was to be a big ride we could include up through Garston, Q'town, Kawerau Gorge, home via SH8 (I haven't been out on the bike for a while and I'm getting the ITCH in case you hadn't guessed)

sounds like you've all had some great rides lately, I saw the same biker twice on the weekend, once going toward dunedin, and the second not surprisingly coming back from dunedin, with what looked like a Staffie bull terrier type dog in a leather bag on his tank. what a great idea and i bet the dog loves it. didnt catch what kinda bike he was on just saw it was black. hope you all have safe new years.

I "found" a great bit of motorcycle road very near Dunedin today that I didn't know existed (and I was in the car so I haven't ridden it yet) - go up Law Rd (the really steep one that comes out onto SH1 at the corner opposite the East Taieri Golf course) - when you get to the top turn left and head back to Fairfield along the top - all sealed and with nice corners and some great views. If you guys already knew about it then you should be spanked for not sharing!!

Headed out there this evening just for the sake of going for a ride. Have to make sure you go left at the top instead of right or it turns to gravel pretty quick. Little bit of loose stuff on the climb up Law Rd but the rest of it is cool fun

Well you've beaten me to it - I'm heading to Dunedin on Frid am to start a trip and if I can leave a bit earlier I'll deviate up that hill.
And yes if you turn right instead of left it does turn to gravel very quickly - I see there is a dry weather only road/track down the hill to Allanton which I will investigate another day, the main gravel road comes out at Brighton.

Its been a while since anyone posted on here - what have you been up to ?? The weather was great over this last weekend so I'm sure we weren't the only ones out there.
We (Delphinus and me plus pillion) headed off on Friday to Otematata - but the route added another couple of hundred Kms. It was quite windy on my way into Dn on Frid morning so we decided on the Pig Root rather than Middlemarch, had lunch in Ranfurly (where we chatted to a couple of fellas on their way to a BMW gathering in Alexandra) and then on to Jantars place for a coffee and catch up.
Oldrider had decided to meet us there rather than Cromwell (he'd got to Cromwell too early - that bloody MPH speedo fools him still !!). When we arrived Jantar had the big V STrom sitting outside looking like it was ready to go - it was - "Bruce - leave your gear on and take my bike for a ride - it hasn't been out of the shed for months" - well its a dirty job but someone had to........
Good luck with getting that shoulder sorted Malcolm - its a great bike waiting for you.
From there it was a simple matter of over the Lindis and down to Otematata - via the Kawerau Gorge, Crown Range, Wanaka........
After a really enjoyable night with Mr and Mrs OR we headed away mid am and Oldrider came with us and guided us round the canal roads - I didn't realize there were 5 Power stations above Lake Benmore. A spectacular day, brilliant weather, no clouds so after lunch at Twizel we rode up to Mt Cook.
One particular long straight section of canal road was too tempting to one nameless biker whose speedo briefly saw a 3 digit number and the first two numbers were not zero or one!
We parted company with Oldrider the other side of Tekapo as he headed home via the Haka. It was bloody hot (my pillion cured this with a wet T shirt swim in Tekapo and had that on under her riding jacket!) and there were lots of sections of road on the way through to Geraldine and up through Canterbury where the tar was melting quite badly - it gave me one slight twitchy moment and was treated with a lot more caution after that. Take care up there if it rains anytime soon.
We stayed with friends near Windwhistle and Delphinus carried on to ChCh and I hear he had a good play around the hills the next day but he can tell that story.
Cool overcast ride home with the "end of a great trip Blues" setting in the nearer to home you get as the real world sends its tentacles out to greet you!!
All up about 1300-1400 kms, fantastic scenery, great roads and great KB company. The most expensive fuel was $1:89 at Tekapo - its going to get worse so get out there and get your share!!

A most enjoyable weekend it was too.
Stayed saturday night at helenoftroy's house, and arrived to find Lemans and SDU there already eating bbq. After making the most of the great hospitality, the next morning headed to over to Akaroa with the above 3 to enjoy the twisty roads. Plenty of tourist traffic but we got through that pretty easily, then after a nice brunch, came back via the top road. Great relaxed ride :)
Decided I better start heading south, so cranked the mp3 player for the straight road south. Thankfully there was plenty of traffic on the road to make it a wee bit more interesting :)
Got a wee bit cold around Timaru so threw a few extra layers on but kept heading steadily south to get home safely ready for... work the next day.
Just over 1600kms added to the odo, at this rate I'll be needing yet another oil change already!

Just thought it might be a better idea to get it in writing. I rang about gravel on the road at the top of my hill and was more or less told to HTFU.

It is a great ride. Lucky for me I was just cruising along it when I went as when I came round a corner there wass a bigass tractor coming the other way and took up a good bit of my lane as well as his.

I took the bike to a meeting up at Palmerston today - shit did it blow on the way home. Its the first really strong wind I've ridden the Tiger in and I'm really impressed.(maybe because its such a heavy fat bitch??) A couple of times I got hit by blasts which shook me around but the bike pretty well stayed put. Very confidence inspiring. Got my Scottoiler put on this morning which is great to have and got the front wheel balanced which it badly needed - amazing how much better it feels with the wheel sorted, especially downhill under brakes.

Anyone a member of the Dunedin Ulysses? - I'd have to admit to being old:eek:
These things are meant to be really good and I think I'll get in there and get a set with the MP3 speakers in them.
Silverfern - yes treat it like ice - and if there is a tiny bit of rain on it treat it like seriously slippery ice. Actually its not as slippery as ice but you can still end up moving sideways on it. Generally its just in the car/truck wheel marks so theres usually a line between these which isn't shiny and I always ride that line, even though that might not be the best line for the corner in which case I slow down a bit so I can use it. If you do have to go over the sticky melting shit then just do it using a line that means you don't have too much lean on.

I go to the testing station near Woolies in Andy Bay. Usually no waiting and it takes 5 mins. They also dont know your bikes specs so are unlikely to whip out a micrometer to measure the wear on your disks and decide you need new rotors or that your braided brake lines are American standard not NZ standards and therefore don't comply. Bike shops tend to get a bit fussy as they need to be thorough to keep the ability to issue WOF's. No slur on the bike shops as I have had good dealings with all of them.
The testing station give everything a wiggle and get you to skid both wheels and your off again with a warrent in 5 mins.

I agree with GaZBur. The testing stations are not that up on the play as Bike shops are, but they do check safety items like swing arm bushes and frame head bushes. I use Dunedin Warrant Testing in Hillside Road opp Otago Tyres. I give them big raps as they have picked up on a couple of issues I had not noticed & was thankful for. If you take a cage there and it fails on a small item they will often fix it for you there & then.

Otago Aero Club Inc.
Taieri Airport
Mosgiel
2008 Taieri Wings and Wheels Event
Including the annual Tiger Moth Club National rally
The Otago Aero Club will be holding its annual Wings and Wheels event at Taieri Airport, Mosgiel on Saturday 23rd February 2008 and Sunday 24th February.
Saturday is the main motoring day and the aim of the event is to provide a venue for aviation and motoring enthusiasts alike. If you are looking for an opportunity for a club run then this is ideal.
There will be a full flying program featuring light general aviation aircraft of all types. The enclosed flyer details some of the attractions. The Red Chequers will be there both days.
The first Wings and Wheels events held in 2005 saw the Best of British Motoring Day participants attend. They returned in 2007 along with the Otago Falcon and Fairlane clubs. The mix of aviation and motoring provides a great day out for car club members and the motoring enthusiast. Unlike most airshows which are solely aviation based, the Taieri Wings and Wheels event format places equal emphasis on the motoring side with a concours event, expert commentary and club parades of selected cars.
This year we are expecting more car clubs. Any club member with a vintage, classic or interesting vehicle of any make will be allowed to participate in the grass track gymkhana event on the day. There will be specific parking areas for each club or marque.
There will also be concours prizes for the best vehicles.
A major attraction of the day will be the annual Tiger Moth club National rally with the presence of up to 30 De Havilland vintage aircraft at Taieri over the weekend. This is a rare chance to see so many vintage aircraft at one time.
This is a charitable event. Entry fee is $ 5 per adult, gold coin for children under 12.
Anyone with an interesting or historic car, motorcycle, truck or off road vehicle is welcome. If this event is of interest, please let your club members know. Gates open 10 am.
If you have any questions please call me on 0274 352 517.

Sounds like an interesting event to go to Chris - the Tiger ain't quite old enough to be described as vintage, and the places mine goes it will NEVER be immaculate (or clean) enough to enter the concours event (it wears its scratches and dirt with pride!)

Well to be honest Jim all I have had at this one is a couple of excellent coffee's, haven't tried the food but given my G Free needs they mightn't have had much anyway.
The place I mean is on the left as you come into Rox. from Alex, there are two cafe's beside each other on the first slight right bend as you enter the business part of the main street. The one I mean is on the corner and if you cross that side street there is a new art gallery there. The cafe' has a big deck area out the back with tables and sun umbrellas, as well as inside seating.

We don't have a regular mets "like every thursday"... not really enough of us and with work, other comittments, weather, especially during the winter months, there might only be one person turn up...
The OMCC have regular rides once month, and all are welcome. If only a few turn up then decide a ride and go... other times there might be quite a few depends on whether there is a race met on the weekend or not...

Round the mountain, over macreas flat, into middlemarch, and back to Dunedin... or over the pennisula, or up over the old road out of Dunedin ... A day trip down the catlins, or into roxburgh, alexandra...
depends on how big or small a day ride you want...

Quasimoto (http://www.quasimoto.co.nz/) (also a kb member) supplies well priced good gear. And if what he sends you doesn't fit properly, you can return it for another size (provided its in new condition of course)
