I suggest it has been broken for quite some time looking at the surface rusty bits and just hanging on, would be hard to see up under there, easy fix anyway, maybe a great opportunity to improve on Suzuki and lengthen and strengthen a new bracket.

Have you ever seen or heard of it happening before? I assume it must've but I haven't had much luck searching for others reports/responses to it.

No and some people hang some big loads off them, if the rack has any side to side movement that will cause cracking very quickly so take this opportunity to correct this if it has movement, only takes small diagonal bracing to cure so not a biggy so DON'T hang half a tonne of steel off it to fix it.

I managed to mangle the plastic surrounding my headlight. Has anyone here had to replace one before (alternatives considered) ? If so could you point me in the right direction ? my google fu is weak and I'm not too keen on going to colemans again. They are nice people but if something is not in stock it can take a while for parts to appear

All that work and then you lose the last 4 bolts that hold the front guard on...
I hate it when that happens

If you look closely the guard is actually mounted intentionally low, there's brackets coming off the fork legs for it.

Maybe it didn't clear the 500 motor.

Word on the street is that the DR 650 will be FI from 2013 on, 2012 might be the last year of our dedicated old simple tractors.

For me biffing the bike round in the sticks and living away from workshops with diagnostics this is not welcome news, not longer will #8 wire and block of wood fix it :oi-grr:.

We have our bikes ordered ... they are gray, the last of the generation maybe.

I ordered a stator side cover gasket, Slim little thing it is, made of paper... $30.00.

None in the country, will be a shipment in tomorrow so you will see it by friday.

That was the 22nd of november....

Now im told it wont be in until the 7th December.

Come on, its a lousy piece of paper....

$300+ for a head light. Get real! you can get a BMW car headlight for that!

Cheap to buy, expensive for bits.....

Go Yamaha next time.

I import most of my parts from the US, most of the time it's 1/2 price or less including the freight, they have it in stock and it takes 5-7 days, I like to buy off local suppliers but when there's no competition in the market place the price is sky high, the local dealer here is about 20% dearer than all the other dealers in this area, I vote with my feet.

There are lots of options available. A lot of us like the Pivot Pegz as they also rotate backs and forwards and are much more comfortable.

its usually cheaper, and often quicker to order from overseas. If your visa card can handle it checkout www.procycle.us or www.vincestrangmotorcycles.com.au, just don't blame me if you blow your credit limit after checking out procycle.

Just fitted a Sargent World Seat to the mightly DR and back from a 5 hour ride around Banks Pen.
What a difference! No more sore arse or dead legs! Makes the bike enjoyable to ride more than an hour at a time. Brought it from the great guys at Freedom Suzuki in Palmerston North. They have them in stock and arrived via overnight courier. $600 well spent, could have got it a bit cheaper from Aussie or USA but by the time you add the freight and exchange rate, not that much and I wanted in Now!

Awesome difference! tested at the the sandpit and worked a treat! more room to move!

But im sick of the rebound, and im not prepared to fork big bucks for an ohlins or whatever... Whats this replace rear oil with 10w like? easy? does it work? Oh and im allergic to oil :( so if its going to be one of those poof and spray oil around my shed... its not for me!

Take the shock to a local bike shop and ask for "a fill up with 10W oil and 150psi nitrogen".

They won't be able to do the nitrogen with it in the bike so may as well do the oil too.

Makes a big difference. 10w with the compression damping wound right off.
Not as good as proper valving but a lot cheaper.

Ahh. What spring are you running.

I use a car grease on the bevel gear diffs of my R/C off-roader once. Blistered up where ever it touched me. Including where I just scratched my nose.

Spring is stock as far as i am aware..... Old bike been across the states and back to NZ, I know it had all the good gear once, but swapped out and sold off by the first owner after he freighted it back from the states. Stink... but fair enough aye! $$$$

I used to work up to my armpits in oils, till i used a citrus cleaner and crunched my thumb, the next day was the beginning of the end...
Some oils im fine with, others its a month of misery... literally! Barrier cream and nitrile gloves and a bucket of careful!

I'm impressed how long this thread has been going for, though not as much as at how long the DR650 has been manufactured for!

Anyone got super high mileage stories? Do these motors ever die?

offrd
26th December 2011, 08:35
Not super high, 51,000. Its done 30 odd in the south island, done the trans America trail and then been shipped back to NZ ( obviously ) but sadly not with me on it back then!

Only thing done to it in that time was a clutch on the Trans America Trail, so that is pretty good!

Still no smoke, knocks or rattles.

Having said that.... bet the gearbag lunches its self and the piston falls out now....:brick:

NordieBoy
26th December 2011, 11:15
My chassis has done 106,000km but the engines have done about 70,000km each.
The only guy in Oz not to ride in sand got 200,000 odd on his with cam chain and clutch replaced whilst couriering with it.

Low revs in high gears are not kind to the gearbox.

High revs in high gears are sweet.

That's why you don't hear of any DR650 race bikes with blown gearboxes.

:D

offrd
26th December 2011, 19:35
Best way to toast any gearbox is load it up. tow in 5th gear in a vehicle and watch the gearbag go to lunch.

Just cause it will, dont mean it should...

If the DR had a high comp piston and everyone lugged them low in the revs they would all pink their pistons to bits...

Keeping it Kiwi. :)
Going for a Cycleworks.
Mid pipe for GSXR muffler will be available if anyone is keen?

:shit: Had the GSXR 600 muffler sitting in my shed waiting to be put on for a while... mid pipe its all i need !!...
How much would you like for it?

Pikey

Paid $650 for the pipe (trademe) and rode over the Akas to Damons where he fitted it.
As usual a high class piece of kit from a skilled expert. Bike definitely feels like more power in mid to top range but grunt still there!
Mid pipe may be for sale just have to check with a mate first to see if he wants it or not?

Hello helpful people

I have decided, I want an adventure bike.. I can get my full I'm just lazy... so will get this done start of Feb once I'm back from Australia on holiday. Once I have the correct licence I will need to decide on a bike. I'm here to ask about your thoughts on my decision process.

I am quite sure I want one of two bikes.. a DR650, or a DRZ400.. because I am yet to ride either of these bikes I want others opinions on the questions I have been unable to answer myself so far.

1. How would a DRZ400 do 2up?
2. How would a DR650 cope 2up?
2. How common is it for someone to do an adventure ride 2up?
3. IF you HAD to do an adventure ride 2up... what would you use?

I'll have lots of further questions I'm sure, but will probably start my own thread once I've settled on a type of bike to purchase.

Cheers

2. How would a DR650 cope 2up? Average, but better than a DRZ400
2. How common is it for someone to do an adventure ride 2up? I only know of 3, one on an @twin another on a GS1150, and another on a some other bavarian thing

I've done a bit of two-up on the DR650, it had the power to do what I wanted to do but was a bit cramped and she hates the seat (already modified too).
Am now doing all my two-up on the Transalp, much more room, much more comfort, Transalp is my bike of choice for everything two up and she refuses to get on the back of the DR now.
Last trip was Christchurch up to Hanmer for lunch then up the Rainbow and back home via Maruia Saddle etc all in a day.
Planning to do the main route of this years Dusty Butt two up on the Transalp later this month and seen others on the Capital Coast two up on Transalps, Africa Twins, Triumph Scramblers, BMW R1150GS's and another DR650.... but most people do most adventures solo.

DR 650 is not the most comfortable for long distance 2 up rides (kind of small, thumper vibration, seat is hard)... so I would go for the transalp or bmw (or aprilia pegaso).

BUT ,having said that, I've been having the DR for a few months and didn't have any major problems going away for a few days 2 up with luggage, camping gear .... just stopped every hour or so for a stretch :msn-wink:

I think depends how adaptable your passenger is as well...

Adventure riding can be as comfortable or rough as budget allows but remember has to be an adventure after all :)

Thanks for all the info guys its all very helpful stuff!

I was at Boyd's in Hamilton a few weeks ago and they have a 07 KLR650 there, the salesperson dragged it out for me to "sit on" .... couldn't even touch the ground (I'm 5 10") !

Is the DR650 the same height, I've read the DR has adjustable seat height but am wondering if the bike it self has the same stature as the KLR?

DR not too tall to start with. Much lower than DRZ.
Lowering it further is really easy. Dropped mine 40mm.:)

I know its been done before, but for 2 up adventure riding with camping gear etc I would look at an URAL outfit!
Remember that definition: "Adventure biking is taking inappropriate bikes to unsuitable places" and at least the Ural gives you 2WD and heaps of room, and a gun mount!

What's your preferred gearing set-up for mainly off-road riding?

I currently have the standard 525 chain which limits my options. I went with a 14T Counter Shaft Sprocket, to lower the gearing, but have just installed a larger Dunlop D606 130/90-17 which has almost cancelled out the gearing changes! I am now looking at changing the rear to a 43. Not sure how easy it is to find a 525 43T in NZ? Should I change everything to a 520 series with more sprocket options?

What gearing combinations work for you?

Transalper
7th January 2012, 10:42
I use 15/43 on my DR650 for practically everything now days, occasionally swapping to 14/43 if I think I need to.
43 tooth JT sprocket was easy to get and is the one used as the stock one for the XF650 Freewinds.
Still need to work the clutch a bit at times.

I see Nordie and Trials rider use lower ratios which I imagine may involve 520 sized sprockets. I understand the 525 chain can still be used with them? but 520 chains are cheaper too??

sudman
7th January 2012, 13:12
I run the 14/41 525 chain D606 rear and find its good for everything I use the clutch in the real hard stuff other than that its good for 120km it had the 15/41 when I go the bike but it was to high geared.

Pikey
7th January 2012, 20:02
Mine has been converted to 520 and has a 43 tooth rear.
Have got a 16 front for long trips with some gravel and a 14 for the sticky stuff.
But a 15 for general use. (This is about the same ratio as Sudman's setup)
I think Levin Motorcycles have a 14 tooth 525 in stock??

After Matt's chain broke on his XR during our recent Rainbow trip I decided I better carry a spare master link for the DR!
However what type to get is the problem as the DR's come with an OEM DID 525 V8 chain that appears not to be on sale to the public.
The DID website doesn't even list this chain, however a bit of searching on the net uncovers an email from DID where they say the the 525 VM2 is a replacement for the V8 chain.
But will a VM2 Master Link fit my V8 chain??? Nothing is easy...............

NordieBoy
8th January 2012, 17:27
Jesse does a 45t 525 steel rear.
That with 14/15/16 sprockets and 112 links would be sweet if you don't want to go to 520.

I may not be fully qualified to answer but I'd expect you could get away with a slight miss match if you have to.
If your chain is still quite new then I'd ask for the V8 one but take the VM2 if that is all they can do.
If you plan to go with DID 525 VM2 for your next chain and get one of those links then you already have a spare link ready to suit your next round.

I have now 2 spare RK525 XSO master clip links to match the chain on the Transalp and 2 spare DID 525 VM2 master clip links to match the chain on my DR650 in my tool kit depending upon which bike I'm riding..

Got mine from Pit Lane, about $15 each... they have some stock buy being the less common 525 they might have to order them in (1 or two days) as they did for my RK ones.

Thanks mate, I have been talking to Don at Pitlane and he cant get a DID V8 Link, and was looking at other options. It appears that the VM2 will do the job so I wil get him to get me one along with a 43T Rear Sprocket this week....

The DR and I recently did the Motu and Waikaremoana followed shortly afterwards by Farewell Spit, the Rainbow and the Molesworth. Awesome would have to be an understatement. Clocked up 10K at Tapawera. The DR was perfect for the job, seat aside <_<, and the Shinko 705's are bearing up very well, 5K so far with another 2-3 still to go I'd say.

Here's some pics for anyone contemplating these roads, totally worth it!

hi - I don't wish to be alarmist - however I'm aware Monstaman had the bearing that carries the sprocket on his DR collapse recently

Just found mine the same when changing rear tyre in prep for the Dusty this afternoon - might be an area for all DR riders to check ahead of this event.

My mechanic was able to replace the bearing with a quality bearing he had in stock

Looking forward to the DB - gotta confess with a little apprehension this year since I'm another year older - Gold Card by the time the 2013 DB rolls around :) Cheers S

Haven't found any for bikes yet though, mostly coffee and transport but getting back and forth across the harbour for nix is sometimes useful. Only to have a 18 year old do a u turn in Pukekohe on me and force me to bail . I was able to save most of the impact with thanks going to the lord!
But needing some parts, anyone know where i can get some second hand parts in particular front brake cylindar, brake hose and calipar? If anyone has upgraded their fairings and has their old ones around be keen to buy. Looking forward to getting back on the road so let me know when you guys are doing some tours in nz.

BUMP..............

hi all, just having some thoughts on my dr650..it goes bloody well power wise
but the suspension is painfully stock which is not so much a problem for rough terrain
at the mo..more that it understeers quite bad, the front tyre always wanting to washout
on gravel, also wanting to take a wider lazier line onroad than other dr650s ive followed
naturally theres the all important rider imput and if i ride it with plenty of body english
it helps it to hook in better but overall i think it should be better than oit is

the back end is a bit saggy so at the mo ill wind up the remaining preload (about one inch )
on the shock, and slip the forks up another 10 mm (which will make it 20 mm all up) above the
triple clamp and see if it helps
failing that maybe some shock work will be on the cards

any advice folks?

bart
7th February 2012, 17:02
Mine's not the best either. It might just be a DR thing.

I just ride to it's strengths. Being lazy turning, I set up the corner early, go in wide and apex late.

On gravel, plan well ahead and use a bit of rear end steering :msn-wink:. Smooooooth is the key as it takes bugger all to unsettle the suspension. A dab of brake every now and then seems to keep things under control.

Oh, and it's never going to handle like an XR....

fridayflash
7th February 2012, 18:16
i thinks thats kinda the system ive developed when riding it...albeit not as fast as you
everyone who has rode it has commented that the front end is lazy (mimmicking its owner?) lol
next time i see you i might get you to take it for a quik spin and get your verdict
it may well be as you say...just the way they are

Stock? Hell no.

0.47kg/mm straight rate Eibach front springs, Intiminators and 5w oil in the front.
7.6kg/mm Eibach rear spring, 10w oil in the back.

Phreaky Phil

Race sag is rider on. A third of your travel is a good base for this, so the DR has 250mm travel, 80mm sag is good. Around the 20-25mm static sag is normal for a dirtbike.

For adventurey type stuff, around 15% static and 30% race sag is ballpark.
From Neduro's book "Dual Sport Suspension".

Mine is 15/30% rear and 17/25% front but I'm running Intiminators on the front so normal sag measurements are out the window.

Oh yeah....

Ricor Racing Shocks are about to start the process of machining billet 4130 DR650 3rd gears. We've emailed Moore and Nova with no reply. Best case scenario would be if we could just buy a pair of gears and be 'rest assured'. The OEM DR650 gears are made from sintered / powder metal which is used extensively in mass production shock absorbers.

http://youtu.be/5VmeIunoyKw

Unless we hear that someone is going to provide billet 3rd gears for DR650s, the next step is for Ricor to order the OEM gears this weekend. Next step is the measure/ copy and CNC machine everything except the teeth. We will find a USA gear machine shop to machine the teeth. The OEM gears will be destructive strength tested to determine the amount of torque it takes to make them to fail/ explode. The new billet gears will also be 'sacrificed' to measure the increased strength. Then they will be tested in our DR650 project bike for noise, etc.

This will be a non profit effort and any advrider inmate who wants to buy a pair will be able to get a set from Ricor Racing. We won't know the price until we know how many customers we have and the gear mfg cost. After the initial production run hopefully another company will handle the mfg and retailing of the parts.

One of my sons has married an Aussie girl. Now hang on a minute, this is not all bad. She's actually delightful, her parents live in Brisbane and her Dad's into 4WD.

You see where this is going??????

Some riding in Oz with a support vehicle available!!!!!

Now, the last time i did this, the bike was heavily laden and long stretches of deep rutted sand were just exhausting. However, with a Landcruiser chugging along behind and no luggage on the bike, I could conceivably attack that stuff with a bit more vigour.

All the people who should know, appear to say that a steering damper is essential for deep rough sand at speed.

My question is this........ does anyone know of a steering damper that will go on on the DR with a Safari tank fitted?

I feel it's smoother on 96 but has a better bottom end on 91.

On George (my 99 yellow DR) with snorkel removed, TL1000 pipe and Phreaky Phil midpipe plus carb needle raised one clip I was getting about 315 to reserve per IMS tank on 95, about 305 on 91.

The Blue 05 bike is currently between modifications and gets appalling economy at the moment, 265-275 per tank on 95. I haven't run it on 91.

I have tried 95, it didnt change the gas milage and I didnt notice that it ran any better so iv'e run it on 91 since. It doesn't have the compresion ratio to need 95. Jetting makes a huge difference to the economy. With my FCR as it came back from MXRob with US jetting, I was stuggling to get 15kml. A bit of jetting it later and i'm between 19-20kml. I reckon I can get it a bit better with more time.

It is in the top position (leanest) with the shim still under it) A 150 main. Havent changed the pilot yet but its still a bit rich at 1/8 throttle. I have an EMR needle to try (MXRob uses this for high altitude) It has the same taper but its a bit fatter. I hope It will put me back into the middle clip position to allow some adjustment. Here's what myself and other Aussies have been doing jet wise.

Is there a template or pattern available on-line for a screen ? I'm sure I've heard of one somewhere
Also... if anyone has some pillion footpegs they're not going to use in future, I appear to have broken one of mine when I fell off. I shudder to think what suzuki want for a new one :shit:

Update on the suspension... rear feels sooo much better now and doesn't seem to collapse when I hop on. I think the 80mm spacers in the front may be a bit much. I may whip them out and shave a few mill off them.

Arc welder & some 8g fence wire..
Or any wire or small Dia steel rod around 3mm will do..
just put the earth & rod holder on each end
then dial the amps up till yer get heat from the wire
with out melting it..
lay it in a bit of wood with a 10mm deep skill saw cut down it..

I have fitted up a bash plate and some side racks for soft bags, a small Godiva screen, a carrier and raised the bars up a bit, and a Cycleworks muffler. I am going to the exhaust grind. I’m thinking on a Pumper type carb to wake it up a bit more, and a larger tank. Any thoughts?

I have had it for a little while and have 1400k’s on it. I don’t intend doing big jumps or racing it. I did all that 30 years ago or so when the RM’S and YZ’s and forward mounted rear shocks were new a new concept in motorcycling and coming on the scene. More to go out and find somewhere to camp out and fish/hunt some of those South Island rivers I have passed on my cruiser and thought, I’m sure I could get a trail bike up there…. so to speak. I bought it because it’s fast enough not to get run down on the highway. If I wanted something that went like snot I would have bought another bike. Just thought I could wake this puppy up a little. I also use it as a around town short run bike.

I'd bypass the pumper for a while and get a rear spring and Emulators/Intiminators in the front.

A 14t front sprocket also helps pep it up without compromising cruising speed.

If you are a "sedate" rider, you'll get a lot more gain fixing the crap suspension then getting a wee bit more pep from the throttle. Suspension helps you everywhere. Pep helps when overtaking cars or doing wheelstands.

Email ProCycle in the States.
You'll probably be after an 8kg spring minimum. The stock one is 6.7kg.

The front springs are about 0.43kg progressives and you'll need around 0.5kg straight wound.

If you get Intiminators for the front, you don't need heavier springs. EddieB may have a set for sale?
Emulators still need the heavier springs.

I have the 8.3 kg spring ( I weigh about the same as you Mo NZ ) and while it seems a bit stiff it will/should be fine with a bit of gear on the back. I put 80mm spacers and 20w oil in the front and while it stiffened things up and seems to take care of the brake dive I'm not that keen on the results.

Has had bottom end rebuilt almost a couple of years ago costing me about $3500 and has second set of rims among other extras.
I just know someone's going to ask how much I want but I'm a bit unsure so far as I am also unsure whether to sell with the IMS tank or sell the tank to another mate who's shopping for a tank now.
Maybe it will be worth more when the LAMS thing for licencing kicks in later in the year.

Yes, me. Ricor shock, eibach springs and intiminators arrived on Friday from Procycles. Fitted them today and short ride shows a marked difference positive. Not had a chance to really drum it yet, but up and down the odd kerb is way better than with stock setup. Not unlike a Kona Stinky going up kerbs. Installation of both was way easier than I was expecting and the shock feels lighter than the stock shock.

I have an 09 DR650 fitted with a Staintune pipe, Dynojet kit fitted to standard carb, K&N Air Filter, Air box door has been drilled to remove approx half of the material snorkel and top of airbox unmolested. Bike goes really well on an open throttle however when it is warm once it has idled for any length of time it dies as soon as the throttle is opened; it will also die if coasting downhill on a closed throttle when the throttle is opened to accelerate. It will always start up straight away on the first prod of the button but it is damn annoying around town (looks as if I am stalling as I go to pull away each time) and obviously dangerous off road. This problem has got slowly worse the longer I have owned the bike. I should have sorted it ages ago but have been distracted by moving house and having an affair with a R80G/S.
I have spoken to the person who did the mods and the intention was to get the max amount of flow and power available. I am pretty sure that the problem is a minor jetting issue but rather than just fixing the existing issue I want to set it up in the best way I can. I do not like the way the airbox door has been opened up rather than the top, K&N Filters from what I have read do not really do the business in our dusty summer conditions (or if regularly cleaned are they OK?).
So with apologies as I am aware there has been much discussion previously about airbox openings.
What filter is recommended if I am to replace the K&N?
I intend to replace the door to the airbox or seal off the holes and open up the top. How much of the top to cut away? (Nordie you always seem to be of the chop it all out school and others are more cautious!)
Is there anyone in Auckland who you would recommend to fine tune the carb set up for me?
The bike is used for general purpose road use as well as for adventure rides.
Nordie apologies to you personally as we discussed this offline some time ago but I have misplaced your reply.

I had this sort of issue a while ago. After a nice higher speed run, throttle off and the slide would stick closed. A bit of a bugger trying to get away from intersections...
Pulled the carb apart, cleaned it and never had the problem again.

Bung a pre-filter (filterskin) on in dusty conditions.
The K&N does away with the filter cage which all the foam filters need so you may not be able to easily change to one.

Replace/close off the airbox door and open the top. There'll be less induction noise as well, as the seat will block some of it.

I've attached the latest Procycle template for cutting the airbox.

160 main, needle 3rd from top, mixture screw to suit - This assumes the Procycle style airbox cutaway.

Ta, but I want a 17", 2.5 or slightly wider...y'know, like a DR650?

So far the best buying looks like ex taiwan for under $100 but I'm in no rush so will see if anything turns up cheap locally, it's a bucket which really appeals to my Scots cheapness!

Appreciate the link tho, thanks!

Buffoon, those symptoms are similar to my DR, it was running a 160 main and going back to a 157 cured them, ie; it was running a little rich. Do your airbox mods then spend half a day with main jets to find what works for your set up, I was surprised how much difference one jet size made.

Well, now I've been on the Transalp for another year and the DR has sat in my garage REG on hold for that time, I'm thinking of selling the DR650.
Just saying in case anyone is looking while I consider my options some more.

I am intersted in your DR650 bike. Both Dean from Avon Suzuki and the guy that got the 650 KLR Avon Suzuki was selling Warwark who had a test ride on your bike said it was in great condition and to look you up on this site as you were thinking of selling.

If you could txt me on 021 570 603 so i could check it out. No biggie if you want you dont want to.

Cheers

Probably been mentioned before – My DR650 headlight was completely shite so did the bulb upgrade with relays to minimise voltage drop, did the measurements on amps to see the difference between the stock 60/55 H4 and a NARVA 100/90 "NOT FOR USE IN EUROPE" bulb, difference is huge main beam just lights up the road, dip gives a better wide spread of light also. Surprised at the low current draw from what I researched on the www of bullshit 6.3amps on main with the new bulb which probably would not even warm the stock wiring but I wasn’t prepared to have a meltdown.
Added a light switch to turn off the lights in case the battery gets low or I want to use other power consumers, all the cables & relays connected by the headlamp and fuses by the starter relay.

Hi long time - months - since my last post, so hi to everyone!

Anyway, I'm here in France til jan next year and after 2 months of being without the DR650 I decided it was time to stump up the grand sum of 950 euros for a 1986 DR600... Any bloody awesome it is too!
Very original bike with road only kms (about 50,000), and recently fitted with my usual Michelin t63's (well it is france).

Did NZ ever get these 600's?
They seem to be very well set up as std - Big tank, bash guard, even a round slide carb, a handy little rack and bag on the rear mudguard. Suspension feels firmer as well, -great!
Only negative for me is the kick start, but thats OK really with the auto decomp thingy lever.

As std (ie quiet!) its a brilliant bike for exploring the local 'chemins' that criss cross the countryside in this part of SW france. Occasionally the tracks wind through sleepy villages, farm yards and even one I've found through someones back yard! I dont think my bike back in NZ would be a welcome arrival with the extra noise! On this bike I dont even wake up the farm dogs - let alone the locals on their 3 hr lunch breaks!

Missing riding with you North Island, and occasional SI guys. Must get round to getting some pics and start a new ride thread from this part of the world.

- Hi jacked thread over, but its almost a DR650!
Au Revoir!

Hi Gavin

Aren't you supposed to be fixing your mother's house?

Hi Gavin

Shhh!

She thinks I'm just popping out to get more "pointes, bois and carrelage";)

Fixing is going well, should be renovation really as I'm turning an old dirt floor barn into an extension of the house. Sort of enjoying the work though, completely different to what I'm used to, and Ive finally finished putting right all of the cock ups made by the last cowboy builder who was meant to get started on the job, so thats changed my attitude towards the work for the positive.

Myself, Leanne and the kids are really missing NZ though for lots of different reasons, and I think I may have to sign up for the Dusty Butt when I get back to get my fill of New Zealand again!

Hey, how much further past the hut is the swingbridge? I've been as far as the crossing the main river and the tracks looked fairly good after that, but I had to turn back then as people were waiting at the hutt...

Looks like a good ride though.

It doesn't seem that much further when you are following the likes of Mark_S and Andy Mac.

There are some huge Podocarp trees on the other side of the river so perhaps the logging finished here.

Bung a dose of 10w oil in the back end then, otherwise the spring will totally overpower the damping.

Done. Much improved on and off road. Very happy with the result. Thanks for the advice

Will any of these work? I know there is two, maybe someone else wants one? Or I could fit one to the aprilia, one to the DR650?

Anything is going to have better flow than the stocker.
The only concern is the physical size of the muffler.

My TL1000 muffler and Phreaky Phil midpipe combined were 800 grams lighter than stock, so not a lot in it weight wise.

Well Eddie, now what do I do? Just bought a TL1000 muffler for $5.50 off trade me :) I guess I now have to look at a mid pipe and then see how it all fits together....It sure was cheap! Road and Sport had it, so will pick it up in due course.

Good score. I'm unsure how it'll work, but for $5.50, who cares if it doesn't.

If it don't look like it is going to be a gain, then it is yours Dino:) After-all a 800 gram weight saving? Is it worth it? I just need to open it up, have a motorbike sound rather than a wet fart...Hey, I will even deliver it....

Don't go drilling holes in the stocker, it sounds like shit.

My TL pipe felt like it gave more bottom and mid range, no difference in the top end. It also made the bike sound a lot better.
