Lol, this thread still going strong.

I don't wave to anyone.

I call bullshit! You would see my Millie coming a mile off and pull over to wave, nay, bow to her brilliance and beauty, then you would notice who was riding :blip:

Haha, that would be a first. A Harley rider who is actually able to take one hand off the bars in order to wave. Most Harleys crash if the rider should try that extreme manouver.

A fucking Harley rider waved at me the other day ... I saw the Harley Diddleson coming and thought "naa .. he won't wave ..." and fuck me he did ...he came alongside and waved ... so unexpected and way too late for me to wave back ...

I hate it when the fuckers do that to you ...

...mind you I'm new to this hemisphere.

I'm facing this apparently monumental and hugely divisive issue as the new guy in the room. I'm from Scotland, where we tend to follow the Euro manner of biker to biker comms - namely (although in no order and I write in reference to, and from the standpoint of, someone who doesn't own cowboy boots or fingerless gloves nor a German helmet fnarr-fnarr, regards fringey leather as the gayest kind and observes a strict 'don't look at em, don't fucking look at em' policy re scooters, just in case they make you gay too), AHEM, here we go: a tilt of the lid, a nod, two fingers off the bars on the side closest to passing opposite traffic, maybe a waggle of the boot if overtaking another bike at speed and simultaneously being occupied, natch', with speed/time/distance/slide/scrape calculations and throttle control, a hearty wave if the weather's shite just cos we're bikers and we don't fucking care, a barely perceptible chin-lift to Hardly Movinsons and their softy Jap-clone girly copies and perhaps a narrowing of the eyes, a la Clint Eastwood, in the direction of bike-mounted bacon.

Thing is, no-matter what complexion, orientation, scale or sexuality, all bikers in Euroland pretty much pass some sort of comms with any bike which passes, out on the open road. And I mean everyone. The Bloody English, ze Germans, Eyties, Les Frenchies the lot. There really is an unspoken bond of banditry amongst us whatever-percenters, the organ-donors, the accidents-waiting-to-happen.You're even likely to get the occasional twitch from red-eyed commuter types around the M25, they're mostly fucking mental anyway, I've seen Fireblades with the fairings removed, and dirty ratty R1s commuting into London at three times the speed limit, daily.

I kinda wonder why it doesn't happen here. I'm in AKL, no surprises, and it takes most of my concentration to stop from being crushed to jam in an asian confusion on the motorway every day - and most car commuters here are to all intents and purposes, swivel-eyed barking psychopathic narcissists anyway, so we're busy, fine. But what about the rest of the time?

Stick meet wasps nest.

Hoots mon!

Aye true enough, however a modicum of mechanical sympathy in my old age, coupled with the ever-present threat of instant death by tiny blind asian lady in car, changing lanes, means I have to keep both rubbery bits in contact with the tarmac most of the time. Hoiking great stinky wheelies tends to degrade one's braking performance somewhat.

That and I'm too tight to keep shelling out for cush-drive rubbers and chains & sprockets.

Yours etc.

I have been riding for near on a year and a half, and have noticed in that time often other motorcyclists will give you a wave or a head nod. Is this common everywhere? Is this part of general etiquette? Do you do the acknowledgement to scooter riders?

'But I'm too lazy to search the forum'....

I did a quick google, as far as I can tell it is a sign of respect? But why do people get upset about not receiving a nod, for me I couldn't care less if they nodded or not? For reference I get less waves/nods on the 'sports' bike than I did on the Jawa, and I also nod about 80% of the time, never wave as I find a nod is easier to see and do.

Sometimes when someone nods or gives me the wave I don't react quick enough and they don't see my nod being returned!

This of course means I have to pull a quick u-turn; catch up to them and make sure they see my reply! I'd hate to think they get home pissed off because they were giving me a friendly wave only to be met with a stone wall of a reply!

Hey Guys, I've been riding over 3 years now in NZ and I find it very strange when you see the chopper riders passing from the opposite lane and they dont give a flying Fudge when you wave your hand or nod at 'em? Does anyone know the reason why they do this? Do they think they're cooler than everyone else on the road? or are they just just mad cos any other road bikes (Sportsbike, Touring bike etc. ) goes faster than theirs? These are the only things I could possibly think of..Any ideas anyone?

P.S- I always feel happy when we greet each other whilst riding. I greet everyone on the road and I receive the same from most of the riders except for the choppers/cruisers. Arent we the big biker community/family who shares the same passion,i.e riding?

Its actually dead obvious, its because choppers have such fundamentally flawed handling and stability characteristics akin to a wobbly jelly. They need all hands on deck and none are free to wave. Of course, these inherent flaws would be no more if the riders had the sense to swing by my shop . . .

I was speaking to a 1%er and may possibly gained an insight in to why cruiser riders don't wave. The Harley guys who are into the "image" would die of embarrassment if they waved to a metric cruiser by mistake. Some of the Jap bikes are now virtually indistinguishable on the road from the Harleys that inspired them, so rather than make a dreadful mistake the Harley riders don't wave at anybody.

Hey Pratik,
I ride a large metric cruiser. You know the one, ya walk past my burgundy and chrome 2000cc behemoth most days, usually slotted next to Tim's 1000cc kawka ninja when your at J st, has the plate 2L VN.

We typically wave/nod/acknowledge most of the time and get the same in return a large chunk of the time.

However typically this time of year with so many part time fine weather only riders about tends to make waving pointless. Simply too many of em, so i tend to only give a nod. Unless its tourers all loaded up, always wave, they typically reciprocate.

Winter, i always wave...… cos bikers are so few and far between, lol.

Funny thing, for what ever reason when i had my sports bikes it was a different story, was hardly ever acknowledged, go figure???? So i suppose it's horses for courses.

Bottom line, don't stop waving/nodding/acknowledging other bikers, allot of bikers enjoy that aspect, some, simply don't.

From our experience when we stop somewhere for a bite/drink and other riders are about most tend to be approachable yakkity buggers, makes for some memorable stops.

Btw, i had to chuckle at some of the replies about cruiser handling issues. To be honest, this can be true at times.

Try punting a long n low cruiser with luggage & two up (about 600 kg's ish) thru tight twistys and attempt to wave!!!! It's like trying to steer an oil tanker through a Venetian water way one handed, Can be hard work, Lol

PS. I'm yet to see that new bike of yours too, fine machine. See ya nec year eh

do you wave at cars or buses when your on ya bike.?? no.., then why do you want to wave at choppers..?? buy a chopper if you wanna get waves from them. problem solved..

Actually I do in some cases. I always acknowledge other road users that have stopped and waited for you when by all rights they were ok to pull out in front of you, same or those that make space for overtaking etc. On back roads on the DR I wave to every farmer and ute I see.
It's basic communication at a human level with people that you might want to help you if broken down or crashed later in day, plus they will be good witnesses who recall seeing you riding in a happy cruise safe manner if the need arises.
Interestingly the same problem exists in the trucking community with those that don't wave or flick lights etc.
Mind you even walking own the street some people can't even mange a passing hello etc...

It's not the fact they don't want to wave.

Come on,Ya gotta feel for them with all those many many many tech(no-logic)al buttons (or as the riders of these bikes call em, 'doo-hickies') to pick from.

So, When ya give these 'his n hers' suited Bee Eem Dub-ya riders a simple wave they are then thrown into a frantic complex techno panic trying to figure out exactly which 'doo-hickie' is the 'wave at the peasants' button.

Too late ya passed em, no wave and again completely misunderstood.

See, it's just a complicated life being a Bee Eem Dub-ya rider eh, lol.

I contribute to a 'Chopper' Magazine (http://www.heavyduty.com.au/magazine). Mostly I write about stockers, but I've ridden a few pretty wild ones now too.

Some of the 26" front wheel units I expected to be diabolical, but were actually quite normal. Remarkably so.
It depends if the rake and trail, frame, forks and adjustable air suspension (they mostly run air rears) - are properly sorted and working together. The rake and trail thing is really critical.

Some are purely art pieces.

In all seriousness, a Harley rider I was talking to freely admitted there was no way he was going to take his hand off to wave because he was afraid his bike would get a wobble-on. Nice bike with high handlebars. The guy owned the Top 10 motorcamp at Blenheim about 5 years back I guess.

I was encouraged by an experienced rider to wave at all bikes I pass on the road (in either direction). This sounded good advice, as when riding there is something cool about seeing other bikers (especially lady riders, need more of them). I try not to wave to riders who are caning the corners though (because frankly, that seems a stupid idea).

Some wave back, some nod, some look the other way, some look at you and just seem to grimace.

What I have noticed is that the many riders who do not wave back seem to look like miserable gits. Or they are on cruisers looking hip, in a sort of imitation Sons-of-Anarchy sort of way (nb nothing wrong with hip cruisers, no link to the miserable gits implied).

Apart from the fact that I'm the poster kid for high vis gear (which is not very hip, which may embarrass the more cooler riders out there, being waved to by an apparently very special needs poster boy for high vis ...), is there some unwritten rule about not acknowledging other riders ?

Hey,

So me and my mate were riding the other day and were talking about Riders who nod.

We noticed in the winter time people hardly nod even when we nod first. Don't know why? Maybe it's because its winter time and its cold and their necks cant move? Because in summer 90% of bikers nodded.

What you guys think? Do you guys not nod as often in winter than summer?

once, a guy nodded to me. that was it. the signal. i got his plate in my wingmirror, found his house, camped it for three days waiting for him to take the bike out again, once he had left, i broke in, had sex with his wife, and daughters, even his son, for good measure, then i knocked them all out, barricaded the doors from the outside and burned the house down.

turns out it wasn't actually the guy that had ordered the hit, who is now refusing to pay me and wont answer any more emails.

Some people are just unreasonable.

Some dude nodded to me once. So I socked him one. He complained but I said I had asked "Do you want a knuckle sandwich?" And he'd said "yes" so I was fully justified in hitting him. He said that yes, he had said yes but thought I meant a PIG's knuckle sandwich...

Its certainly much safer to take your hand off a steering wheel than the handle bars of a bike. Do you wave to all other cars going past when you are driving too? If you are looking for biker friends join a club and often other bikers can be happy to chat at cafes. The roads are dangerous enough without the distraction of waving while riding. I would not take offense if no one waves back and it may be safer for you too to stop it.

One armed riders must be the most dangerous bikers out there then.....I doubt they wave

How did we cope with moving the fuel from main to reserve when the engine started to splutter without pulling over "safely" and stopping? I am amazed that all those bikers from years past are still around.

Do you know when I'm at a café I just love jumping up and waving at every passing bike to see if they will wave back and fall off, none have so far but I live in hope :bleh:

This has probably been done to death in one of the waving threads, but you can't beat a good waving thread

Wellington must be the friendliest place in NZ for bikes. I wave or nod at most other bikes I see on the road (With the exception of motorways) and I would say 80% return a wave or nod. Sports bikes, Harleys, trailies, they mostly wave, hell even got a nod from patched up gang member the other day.

Thanks James. Your comment probably sums up most of the other comments. My wife and I departed from Germany over 4 months ago and have traveled over 15,000 miles through 14 countries to get to NZ. I must say, a very warm welcome from Kiwi bikers so far - not.

Thanks for the good wishes - I thought this was perhaps a helpful forum and thought that the "non-wave" was part of the NZ Motorcycle Training. I guess not. We have met some super helpful and kind people on our trip here - waiting to meet some mature folks in NZ but based on most of the responses here it doesn't look promising.
