Pffft!
THAT all went out the window with 6-o'clock closing and 35 cent per GALLON fuel...

Nobody cares about anybody else these days... :(

Sad but true. Our country is getting more gruff, non forgiving and more hard nosed.
$3-99 for swap a crate and gas at $0.28c a gallon rent a flat for $30 were good times aye.

You seem like you're an intelligent guy, so using the search function on a website shouldn't have been so easily overlooked. Most on here are real accommodation when it comes to overseas visitors, local knowledge about roads not normally known to new entrants/place to see/where to eat etc.

The welcome you got (however you perceive it to be) is just another side of Kiwi humour and quiet prevalent on this site from time to time, Wouldn't take it to heart, count yourself lucky you didn't start a thread about Golf or Harley's.

I think now days the subtle head nod is the way to do it.

Contrary to my previous comment, OP, I do wave, but with the gales we've been having here, an inadvertent wave might see you as a grill ornament on a Fonterra tanker, and the head nods are usually just trying to keep the head attached to the shoulders...

Yes, I have waved, then thought naa fuck it, won't do that again in a hurry...
Concentrate on the road, just worry about the idiots in front of you and behind you....
On a small country road, it isn't just a wave. Sometimes even a U turn and a chat on the side of the road has been achieved. You could be sitting on a grass bank and then a bike trundles past and next minute he is trying to steal your muffin! or Subway :)
I have and will on the occasion that offers it.

Thanks James. Your comment probably sums up most of the other comments. My wife and I departed from Germany over 4 months ago and have traveled over 15,000 miles through 14 countries to get to NZ. I must say, a very warm welcome from Kiwi bikers so far - not.

I'm quite friendly to Europeans, people from "Eurasia" (That place John Kerry said the US has always been at war with just a couple of days ago) and as much as I tease them, I'd give up my last jandal to an Australian. But any country that demands my shoes at the border needs to reflect on how their foreign policy reflects on their, quite probably lovely, overseas travellers.

It was an attempt at humour but I keep forgetting that even someone from Switzerland would have seen my comment for what it was, someone from the US is going to have kittens about me not automatically genuflecting and offering to move out of my house so you can use it instead.

Correct, but I did - sorry - it was a quick post (I'm riding most of the day these days - not sitting at a computer except for a rare one like today) to ask if this was a result of some unique way NZ bikers were trained. Having said that a comment (as you did) to look for the past "Wave" threads or even a link may have been a helpful response since all the regulars here apparently knew about the previous discussions.

I have found that the world over - I wouldn't expect NZ bikers to be much different but maybe they are.

How did we cope with moving the fuel from main to reserve when the engine started to splutter without pulling over "safely" and stopping?

Ah yes. I remember the engine cutting out as I was heading into Bell Block on my AJS, I reached down to switch to reserve and grabbed the spark plug.
Back then there weren't any poofy rubber caps, just a brass tag so you felt every single volt.

I guess the door's open on the politics now - forget the motorcycles - I suppose religion is next?. Meh! I'm a well balanced person; I have a chip on each shoulder

As for the info you asked for....some in NZ wave or nod some don't, normally for the following reasons:

1) They like riding but don't want to be part of the "biking fraternity"
2) They don't wave at your kind of bike
3) They can barely control their bike with both hands on the handlebars
4) The road conditions and traffic aren't the best for waving right now

I could search and provide the links but you've already got the same range of responses and thread hijacking as you'd find in them.

Religion???? Here's a quote for you that may be appropriate for a waving thread....

1 Corinthians 10:23
"Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive. :innocent:

Yes Tazz, we have met some wonderful folks here already. We plan to stay in Picton Tuesday night (5pm ferry) so if you see a couple riding from the ferry waving to everything that moves that will be us!! I'll buy that beer and you won't even have to genuflect.

No worries - I was just curious - I'm familiar with Trolls, shit stirrers and thread hijackers as I moderate on another forum. Nothing said here here is going to affect our world trip through your beautiful country.

When we meet people from other countries (bikers or not) we like to treat them as people - not immediately stereotype them as instruments of the respective governments where they reside. nationalities or personalities based on their bike brand. I came to this forum to obtain and share info with fellow motorcyclists. It's unfortunate that some immediately discriminate or evaluate another based on their politics or other factors.

For those of you that want to continue the discussion then enjoy but I'm done with this thread. We're off to ride the South Island to wave at more fellow motorcyclists (whether they wave back or not). :)

large groups of identically dwessed Hog riders ...not so much....but that was over near Tauranga.
Two V rod Bros even said hi at the pub, that Crouchers Pilsener is a nice drop.

When I was in Europe many years ago, all the bikers waved....did they stop when you broke down...er no, but the Volvo towing a caravan did and took me into town and back, just waved at Volvo towing caravans after that.

BEST wave I have ever received on a bike yesterday heading home from work in Wellington heading towards Upper Hutt on the Moonshine bridge. It is still making me laugh at midday the next day so I thought it was certainly worth a mention.

It was last minute - his arm went straight up past his head at full stretch, and his "spirit fingers" hand let loose with absolutely no control at the end of his arm. It was was short, sharp, last-minute and fast with his hand straight back down on the handle bar again that it left me laughing so hard that I cried.

Sir - THAT was an exceptional wave, and I'm sure it must have been the KB special wave as it sure was special. 10 out of 10 for enthusiasm. You made my day (my week even), thank you.

Ok I grew up in the 60's and 70's and back then there was a lot of anamosity toward anything Japanese which permeated from my parents generation who went through World War 2 ... so I get it.

Most of the guys I grew up with hated "Jap Crap and Jam Jars". I was considered a rebel when I got my first bike a Yamaha RD 250 in 1972.

I grew up in an area where most young guys were into bikes. We all went to school with Graeme Crosby and his older brother Steven so it was very much a bike culture.

Most of my mates were into Triumphs (Harleys were way out of reach to anyone then). Funny thing was while they were always working on their leaky, gutless "Trumpies" whilst I was out riding without the BS they suffered. They considered them more "classy" bikes back then. I didnt get that because they were always breaking down, didnt handle etc and the only redeeming feature in my mind was the sound, especially the Triumph Trident.

That was a by-gone age.

I notice riding around Auckland and its rural districts that guys on other bikes still wave out which is nice, as its always been but accept for guys riding Harleys and Triumphs.

I would have thought this subjective snobbery would have gone by now but it seems it still exists.

I waved out to a Harley in Clevedon about 3 days ago and he gave me the FU finger.

I was flummoxed at his attitude and I have noticed many others don't/won't wave, The only ones who wave are all expect Harleys and Triumphs.

Anyone else notice this?

Hope you've got your flame proof jockstrap on. Waving threads can provoke fits of verbal aggression in some hereabout.

I remember simpler days when everybody acknowledged everybody else but those days are gone. Certainly I'm not going to let the people who can't ride unless they have a death grip on the bars with both hands spoil my day.

Enjoy the ride.

They* are rebels without a cause, they don't conform to the rules, they ride free. They wear leather vests, ass-less chaps and tassels. They are bad-ass mo-fos.

A few weeks ago I saw a rider on a Suzuki GN coming the other direction and he was furiously waving at me, I had a smile to myself and gave him a friendly nod and wave back. We share a passion for motorcycle riding and shouldn't judge someone for what kind of bike they ride.

I'm not excluding Harley or Triumph riders at all, I think it' s them that tend to exclude other riders from their "club". People might defend harley riders, you know they can do what they like rah rah rah, whatever the reason, it still comes across as anti-social and as excluding people who don't ride their brand.

It's not a requirement to wave, but it's courtesy to return one.

I find the odd thing about a lot of Harley riders is they thing buying a generic cliché cruiser bike on the basis that someone by doing so someone will think they are badass.
Is actually somehow rebellious.
I therefor think Harley dealerships should be made to offer "self esteem counselling" pre purchase of all their motorbikes.

Harley Davidson offer free new rider training, but they call it boot camp

That's probably clever marketing, if a little late to the game.

A while back lots of American military personnel were returning home to the States with big bank balances, there having been nowhere in Iraq or Afghanistan to spend their pay. Many, being young and single, purchased toys and, it being the USA, a new motorcyclist can buy a Hyabusa and ride it sans helmet. It was said at one stage that, for US Marines, the casaualty rate from motorbike accidents was higher than from either war.

So to offer training using a dash of military terminology like "recruiting" and "boot camp" is probably not a bad sales pitch.

What do you think?

Hey KB people just a quick question. Since being on my bike the last couple a weeks (I've probably put 1500 + ks on my bike in that time ☺️☺️☺️ ) one thing I've noticed is how friendly most bikers are. I was on my first ride only a few ks out of Nelson when i passed my first biker going the way who gave me a friendly nod. Just about every other rider I passed after that either nodded or gave a wave. But what I have now noticed is that some riders don't. So that's my question. Who does and who doesn't wave to passing bikers? If you do, why? and if you don't, then why not? I've noticed guys on similar style bikes to mine will wave, but those on Harleys (a bit of a generalization lol) or sports bikes won't.
Anyways I'm keen to hear your guys comments

Now be very careful here, there is such a thing as the KB Wave. Not to be confused with ordinary waving and once you've got the hang of that it'll become patently obvious who's who.
Your initial observation isn't the generalisation you first thought. Most bikers wave to one another as they pass, or are passed. Most motorcyclists Do Not Wave to scooter riders, or worse still bicyclists.
Most ordinary motorcyclists are friendly and wave to anyone else on a bike.
However some" who ride particular breeds of motorcycles don't bother to wave, for a multitude of reasons, mostly because they think their shit doesn't stink.
Their bikes however often end up dormant on thë side of the road for long periods of time while other people go to get gas, parts or even engines to get them going again.
These particular riders are commonly linked to the use of the same motorcycle brand, the pity is that most of them have spent Oodles on their bikes and don't get to enjoy the pleasure or the comaraderie of biking, simply because some of thier ilk deem it un fashionable to either wave in the first place or to wave back once being waved too.
I can honestly say I've recently noticed a Marked increase in the numbers of wave returners being mounted on such steeds, must be somehting in the water.
Welcome to KB, an interesting and very intuiative post, you mmay well go far here in KB.

Sometimes someone will pass me and wave and if I've just got too much going on haha like staying on the road I may give it a miss. Some do some don't I do unles they ride a Harley haha joking maybe but gang pricks are out ....others may know more though

Cheers for all that! I'm glad it wasn't me just being "closed" minded or seeing something that wasn't there. I figured not to wave to "dudes" on scooters or even those on push bikes (a certain brand may be able to come under that title??) and definitely not to those who are associated to other certain groups of enthusiasts...... So Cheers for pointing these things out for me.

I think it is the other way around where people are so caught up in themselves they can't contemplate that some people can't be fucked waving at their self important selves (and the 200 other motorbikes that follow after a few hours on the road).

And why exactly do you need someone to wave to you? Does it make you feel warm inside? The only thing I might have in common with you or another rider is that we ride motorbikes. I am sure the reasons we do are so different. Should I nod when I see someone walking down the road holding a helmet? Seems like a giant crock of shit to me.

If you drive a VW Combi I get the many reasons why you would wave to another, but simply for riding a bike? Get fucked. Even this place shows that 97.3% of motorbike riders are complete and utter cunts. What is with the waving?

A little wave or nod of the helmet to say hi. Remember as a kid (and they probably still do) truckers having similar rituals with each other.

glory holes in truckstop bathrooms isn't quite the same thing.
if you want that kind of shit you'll have to go honda...

If you ever see someone in a Magna Station Wagon waving at you, it's not an acknowledgement... it's an enticement.

i only feel validated as a human when people wave at me.

You need to count the number of fingers they are waving at you with - only a full house counts for validation ..

Today, rode past about 4-5 riders on the opposite side of the road who all nodded at me whilst i waved frantically. Unsurprisingly in my short time riding it's been all the cruisers and harleys that don't wave at me. All the crotch rocket lads give me my proper respect, waves and all. I think the biker wave comes down to - hey theres another guy just like me that has little to no regard for his life. I know this subject has been beaten to death, hell, i'm pretty sure i'm necroing this thread. But I think harley riders think they're superior, something about their lil american made machines makes them reckon they're the bees knees. As if your life is worth more than my life ya lil cunt. Sell your harley and fuck off to USA. We got enough yanks here.

For safety reasons, l suggest you look straight ahead and keep both hands on the bars.
Dont wave...... you might crash by doing so.

How the fuck can this thread still be going? How shit is your self esteem if you need the perceived validation in the form of a wave in order to feel good about your day?

I care michael. i care.

because my actual siblings were bludgeoned to death with a claw hammer and/or died horribly in a fire i probably lit,
i now need to feel that i'm part of a wider family, consequently, when a fellow mitsubishi owner refuses to wave back to me, i carjam their license plate and go to their house to kick their pets.

:( Oh no, its red. Oh wait, it isnt. Good to see the satire isnt lost on anyone here. Also, please stop using full stops incorrectly mate, really betraying your IQ. That and your insults "wanking fuckwit". Try harder, please you have some time to think and type, maybe even ask your missus to proof read your message, and theres even an edit function. While you're at it , grab a dictionary on the way home.

Another question from the less enlightened

Should I wave or nod at the following fellow 2 wheeler's.

Scooters
Gang members
Police motorcyclist
Illegal dirt bike riders

You don't know if you don't ask
Thanks in advance.

1. You're riding a Honda, so it's ok to wave with both hands.
2. Neither because they think they're too cool to respond.
3. Don't be rude, you're still on a Honda and you can't escape.
4. Either because they are cool.

A 19 year old thread? Sombre thought and I don't know where it came from but we've probably lost bikers who weren't even born when this thread started.

The waving query is not uniquely Kiwi either, I recently saw a question about waving on Twitter. That was from a UK source.

Wow, my query ended up here, After reading a few historic short pages on this thread, I didn't realize how dark and disturbing some of you are in the biker community.

The public perceived stereo type of bikers is true I guess, I hoping for a breakthrough in genomics DNA altering to correct the schizophrenia gene in the next decade to help many of you lost souls (and mind's)

In the meantime I shall avoid biker folk and ride solo until then

Thanks x.
