Great ride this morning guys.

One question tho - who was the idiot who parked their 4wd under a fallen tree?

Almost as silly as parking a 4wd in the Appleby River just below roof level.

Yip...... good fun :D
And the tree was upright when I left the carpark. Windscreen should be fixed tomorow, don't think I'll worry about the bonnet and aerial though

Was surprising how grippy it was compared to yesterday arvo - specially the hills facing the northern sun.

Yeah we should do it again soonish. Good selection of bikes there too. I did like the way Will can pick his up & spin it around on the track.

I gave Jatz a hand & pushed/rolled the ct down the hill while he rode gonzo down to get the trailer. Wasn't till I started riding home that I realised what I'd done - waiting to see if it'll go tomm morning.

I did like the way Will can pick his up & spin it around on the track.I was surprised how gutless it was, though. Top job from Will for the day! :Punk:

Presumably the road gearing didn't help. Thrash first gear then it still couldn't hold second up a fairly typical hill. There's a big step up in power from the 125 to the 200 (as in the DR200 I used to have), but I 'spose it is 60% more cubes. A "useful increase" as they say.

Clearly it's geared for top end speed, I have seen an indicated 100 with WOT along the Stoke bypass....then turned around and did 95 into the wind! Leave it in first just about everywhere was the answer, pleased that the clay had dried out, the MT40s when clogged were slippery! Let us know a time that suits and I'll come have a look at your more appropriate tyres, though I do like the idea that Fran had about trials tyres, not so sure how they would wear on the road though?

Not yet.... I may wander down to the shed later and have a look at it, then again I may not :D
I may give it a birthday if I'm gunna do more of that sort of stuff, I wouldn't take the Big up or down some of those hills so the ct may see more action.........
or I may just get it mobile and kick it into a corner 'till next time

C'mon Nordie you've had 24 hrs to sort out some pics, rattle ya dags :D

What I liked a bout the CT was the way the front suspension worked. You got more suspension from the forks flexing deflecting than from the shocks. I find it hard getting off the couch on these cold nights let alone going into the shed.

Will if your bike was orange Warewolf would have called it unoverpowered. I still like it & good stuff rocking round the trails.

Nice and easy - undo axle nut and remove axle. Adjusters at back of swing arm can be left alone. Adjusters are connected to peice of steel inside swing arm that axle goes through i.e. moving axle back and forward for adjustment purposes. Just pull the axle and all will become obvious. Lucky for you the XLR wheels were really easy to get tyres on and off. HTH. Have fun.

Re the drum - just take the adjustor nut off to remove, you much have too. To put back on, just pull the lever attached to he drum as far forward as possible and put the nut back on the rod. Do the nut up as tight as you can with your fingers till the brake is draging then back of a half or full turn. Piece of cake.

Have I got the right answer this time? ;)

From memory, i got 41st overall, out of 53 riders. 5 out of 8 lap were all 23min laps with on a few sec past 24min, so i may be slow but at least im consistant.

I'll get onto the person in charge of the results next week as i'm currently registered in the over 300cc 4st class but the drz is actually elligable for the under 300 class due to being old, slow and heavy.

Should have a new gasket kit next week so i'll be able to put the bike back together after blowing the head gasket during the XC and finishing it off by swimming in the wairoa gorge the day after.
Can't wait for round 3!!!!

Well that was fun :D

The day didn't get off to a very auspicious start, with zeRax's van blowing a radiator hose on the way up Spooners. We thought the day was doomed but an AA tow back to Wakefield where they had a replacement hose meant we were mobile again and on-site by noon. Yay!

The advice was that I should manage the A-grade sections, but don't even think about the AAA grade bit. Our first 20km lap we stuck to the main loop, as it was greasy enough in places to be challenging. It was all on forestry tracks, big and small, no single track or anything of that nature. With decent tyres you'd get round on any adventure bike - a film of greasy clay-ish mud on top of a hard base mostly. But it wasn't as easy as it sounds - with Metzeler MC4 soft terrain MX tyres I was still sliding all over the place.

Second loop we had a crack at the A grade bits. First up was a single track straight down a spur. Steep enough for me to stop and paddle down the steepest bit. The next A grade was a beauty of a loose rocky uphill, basically up a fire break. Three quarters of the way up it got steeper and looser - and that was just my riding  Z-man also came to a stop, so we bailed back down to a flat piece because there was no way of getting mobile on the slippery slope. Z made it up on the second try, I managed it on the 4th go, stopping at virtually the same point every time - pointed in different directions though! :D Interestingly traction was less of a problem than I expected, but keeping the thing pointed up the hill was hard.

The last A section wasn't that tough, but rather scenic overlooking the Tadmor valley I think. Just a slight detour off the track but nothing too tricky.

The last section of track wound along constantly crossing flooded streams, and flooded sections of track - it'd be a misnomer to call those parts "big puddles". Fortunately not terribly deep, because you couldn't see through the muddy water at all. Just plunge in, stay balanced and be prepared to ride out any hidden hazards. :Punk:

After a break we manage a third lap skipping the A sections. Was hoping to get a quick lap in before the track closed at 3pm but we missed by 1 minute!! Arse.

zeRax
13th June 2010, 21:38
as above ^! shame about the start but pretty happy with the riding we got in, glad we still made it!

damn van needs some loving, maybe its the vans way of telling me to stop using it and fix it all up first !

the one thing i could have liked is maybe another couple different A grade parts, but really it was good to get a ride in , it has been a long time, and straight away i suffered from nonridingitis and sore arms, pathetic ! although my shoulder has been sore for last 4 or so days with no apparent reason why, hope to do alot more riding soon, that hill was long and loose, loosey and gummy,

as a whole, clay and mud covered knobs with straw holding it together was a common site. i think was slippy, but didnt deteriorate as much as i thought it would! wonder how many riders entered!

roll on next one!

Watched a couple of young fellas on KX85 or sim trying to get up Hurricane Hill. Hard case slipping all over the place. Neither of them got up there but they could turn their bikes around & come down very quickly.

If anyone's else is keen on a gravel bash next Sunday morning I would like to go back & plot some more roads on the GPS. I've got shit tyres on at the mo so may split into the hard & soft core if there are a few coming. Really good fun.

The only prob may be if Sharlands rd gate is locked like it was last time. Can you get in from the caretakers house or is that locked? Or could get thru from top of Whangas.
Anyway sing out if you're keen.

I'm knackered.

Not as physical as the Tadmor XC but mud. Lots of mud. Where it wasn't mud it was slippery wet muddy grass.

On my 1st lap I basically had to push up every hill. There was no way I was getting up some of them whilst sitting on the bike.

Laps 2 and 3 and they'd removed all the big hills from the course :D

Got cleaned out by a guy on a muddy bit  who was most apologetic in the pits after.

I was going down hills that even 1 year ago I would have shat myself on.
I was going down them with the engine off and using the front brake and clutch for slowing down type stuff.

Well after washing the bike yesterday (drying it twice after the wee lad squirted it with the hose once I was done :)) I went out and got it dirty again this arvo. Popped over to the Pig Valley cross country for a look. First thing I see is topo with his bike on the trailer!! Damn! Head gasket again.

It looked wet and slushy. Nordie turned up eventually, looked like Ye Olde XR was struggling a bit.

Since it was raining we buggered off. I went for a pootle up the Wairoa Gorge Rd (fcuk was the river a raging torrent), ending up at the Ben Nevis car park. Was a bit slippery on the last steep clay bits up through the trees, but not too tragic. Next time will have to do the Ben Nevis Rd / Boundary Rd loop.

Had to stop exploring little side tracks - would've been a long walk out by myself. We gotta get back in there for an explore soon.

So it turns out that the Super Cross is also DOT approved, so it went on last night on the front, had a bugger of a time getting the spline back on the front, I'm already out of adjustment so no more stoppies until I sort that!

Most fronts pass the "max gap between tread blocks" test.

I dunno how the Kenda K760 rear passes though.

Most fronts pass the "max gap between tread blocks" test.I don't know that there is such a thing. I read the FIM enduro rules recently and it says nothing about it, but I regularly hear of some limit especially in connection with "forestry approved", whatever that is. Maybe it's a historical thing since dropped?? There's an FIM or DOT tread depth limit it seems (1/2" with many MX tyres 20/32ths) so that could be it, esp. given most fronts are shallower than the rears. Full tread depth is often quoted in tyre specs but gap between blocks almost never is.

A quick check of garage stock shows the NHS S12 having the biggest gap at ~44mm, next biggest is the FIM/DOT Competition III at 36mm. Almost everything was smaller, many in the 28-30mm range eg Scorpion MX eXTra (NHS), Metzeler MC4 (NHS, soft terrain, S12 competitor) & AC10/Crossengo (DOT). Intermediate terrain D756 (NHS) was more like 20mm, typical of the class eg Innovas, Yokohama SuperDigger.

Many of the DOT fronts had a bigger gap than the NHS rears. However the S12 has the biggest gap and is NHS; similarly the D756.

Anything out East is going to cop the worst of the weather. There is a blocking high in the Tasman stalling all the fronts in the Strait. So Patriarch/Black Bitch is not so appealing.

Soundoff will have to be postponed. I got the muffler (WR450) on with a bit of grinding and welding, but it is a bit long in the body and the mounting holes didn't line up (go figure). Will have to rethink it , maybe put it on a big angle kinda like a xt660.

It did sound good though, although a bit loud in the shed.

Well that was adventure I don't care to repeat - the first half of the day anyway. :yeah:

Waylaid in Richmond by a piece of glass that went straight through the tyre. :argh: Fortunately right near a servo with magic air in a hose. Unfortunately I then knocked the bike off the side stand trying to undo the rear axle, simultaneously bending the axle spanner into uselessness and scratching the front fairing against the metal waste bin. So Mrs Warewolf brings out a socket and the lift stand. In goes the spare tube in 20mins flat (ha ha - little did I know).

Just get to the dirt in Wairoa Gorge Rd, hmmm what's this? More wibbly-wobbly from the rear end? That feels flat again, maybe I can pretend it's just the rear moving around in the deep rocky gravel stuff? Nope. :thud:

Out with the old tube, check the patch kit, yep, so got it patched. No stand so had to lay the bike over to get the wheel out. Found the new tube had been punctured by a small shard of glass :o, I did check for more bits stuck in the carcass originally, but this piece must have been floating loose. Note to self: always remove tyre after glass injuries to get all of it out! :spanking: While it was all sitting there with a freshly opened tube of glue, I patched that one, too.

Original tube went back in again no worries, with a couple of layers of gaffer tape inside the carcass over the cut, to stop any flexing pinching the tube (had that happen before). Had to use the mtb pump this time, so that took a bit of effort but works fine. :sunny: And my one small win was using the toothbrush to get the mud out of the axle hole & sprocket, :Punk: although I probably should have put a rag on the ground first.:slap: A toothbrush is one of those little things that makes life easier trail-side: it's great for quickly getting the crud off bolts etc before you undo them.

So the tyre stayed round after that, and I caught up to the team 15mins later. :scooter:

The Wairoa River was about 2m lower than last week, and prettily clear rather than being a wild muddy brown. We explored a track or two on the true right - the slippery pine needles made sideways action easy & frequent. Quite a good view up top - ta Nordie - overlooking the Moutere Depression, Tasman Bay nearly out to Separation Point.

So the day wasn't a complete loss!!

How about 11:15 at Sharlands carpark. It should be reasonably dry up the tops with the sun & wind from this week so you smaller bikes will be having a ball. I'm keen as to head round up Central (Hurricane hill wil lbe good for the hondas) maitai face rd, Teal valley rd to Bolier gully, duckpond rd way & check out some other roads that branch off.

I'll be like the mothership & dispatch the smaller craft on reconaisance missions. If you can some back successfull you will be rewarded, if you don't return- well there'll be others to take your place- you're dispendable - get over it:angry:

Thanks for the company - you're not a bad bunch of blokes when you're moving:love:

I rode Zerax's DR with the flatslide carb. Probably the smoothest delivery of power from any bike I've ridden. Very very nice. Tell me about them... what are the advantages (obviously I experienced the smoothness) & disadvantages (if any). Are they able to be used on any bike without dyno work. I mean the carb not the DR

Nordie I still have your radio. I think these are a great idea to take on a ride - easy to find out what bits have fallen off Hondas.

BTW Someone else has had a 3rd gear problem on their DR.

The good thing with the FCR or TM carbs on the DR is people have already done the work and got the jetting pretty well sussed for most exhaust/altitude combos.

No idea about klr's though.

More radios would be more betterer.
Today was the first time I've used them and they came in handy. Pop the batteries out or they'll run flat in no time.

well it was a good day yesterday

and today mate oly and i revisted it and alot more of the area in there, followed an older guy in a white ute, had a klx450r, stopped and talked to him, found out about different way to get in, just round from jacobs? creek?., was a fucking bonus cause we thought we'd just fluff round manga track, then we spent whole day in hira/sharlands whatever loving it!

we did alot of leet as uphills and downhills, theresa so much shit in there its crazy,

also anyone have a how-to tutorial on getting up the extreme downhill mountainbike track ?
we gave it a good crack for sure, but the lack of traction was killer @_@

someone has killed alot of goats along one of the fence lines ( the closest one to nelson i think ) ,was smelly !

also i lost nut from kickstart shaft, good thing i didnt lose my lever !

Stay away from the mountain bike tracks - repeat stay away from the mountain bike tracks. There's enough mental drops without pissing off the MTBers

You see why I ride there nearly every weekend. There's something for everyone & 5mins from home. In fact it would be cool to have a key for the top so we could go in from Dodsons valley (where I live).

If they were still running the permit system you would have received an information pack telling you all mtb tracks are out of bounds, as are their bridges & other paraphernalia.

And be aware the forest isn't generally open during the week due to logging operations, only weekends during daylight hours.

MTB tracks are not a good idea.

Even a certain Australasian DH Champ has only talked about getting up the DH track.

I had lots of problems just walking down it.

Are the MTB tracks marked as such?

didnt know it was a "MTB" park

the older guy we were talking to talked about a 30km loop he does, including a slippery rock climb, so of course when we got down there, we saw this slippery rocky starting area and thought cool, lets go up there

little did we know he hadnt gone up there, and upon returning down after tiring out and failing, got down to the carpark and realised theres a sign there showing all the "MTB" tracks and all the roads

where we got in there were some guys fencing when we got back, he said we'd still be able to get in there, and its just for occasional stock.

it is a big area ;0!, older guy just advised to keep clear of the logging operation and the truck roads and it'd be fine ;OOOOOOOO

Ummm, maybe because the mtb tracks are tighter and more challenging = more fun?

What we need to do is get permission to build some single-track for motorbikes, maybe in the middle of the block up near/between Lud Saddle and the saddle closest the caretakers cottage, somewhere in there.

I wouldn't actually take what the older guy said as gospel re just 'staying away from the logging sites & you'll be right' unless he's the head honcho forestry manager (which I strongly doubt).

It's been pretty common local knowledge that the forest is off limits to everyone except forestry workers during the week & they let us have our play time in the weekends & daylite evenings.

Having used the forest & surrounding areas for nearly every weekend for the last 12 years running, mtbing, orienteering, tramping & for the last 2 years motobiking, the last thing I want to see is anyone being denied access.

Motorbikes during work hours could endanger that access. I suggest sticking to the weekend for ripping it up & stay off any MTB tracks.

Unless I'm completely mistaken I thought the sign at Sharlands stated the forest is open during the weekend & during summer evenings & states the closing time. If this is incorrect I would have thought the gates would remain locked (&/or barricaded where access is open beside them).

What post are you referring to where anyone is advising it is legal to be in any forest in Nelson.

While there might not be any actual legal right to ride in the Hira i've personally spoken to a number of guys who have been logging up there who support the Dirtbike guys 100% (aparrently we dont put nails in trees like the mtb guy's who build ramps etc), especially us adv lot who MOSTLY ride like nannas. Talked to our friendly neighbourhood Nelson Forest management tonite. Absolutely no problems going into their forests ( rai valley, golden downs, Hori bay, Mt duppa) unless there is harvesting going on in a particular area - then there'll be signage out. The majority of gates aren't locked & if there are public access roads access is open.
Of course the responsible thing to do is call the 0800 number & let them know your plans.

Ok maybe not expensive but sophisticated in it's mongrel way.

BTW I watched Lester make a plasticine mold up for his TZ750(?) barrels & pour a rubber solution into the ports that hardens into a rubberised shape of the ports. He can somehow take dimensions of the 'shape' of the ports & feed it into the computerer. This shows him where the mixture sprays into the cylinder in relation to where it should be sprayed for optimum combustion. ( I think IIRC close as to the exhaust side to meet the back wave from the exhaust??) From this the ports can be manipulated to get better performance. I was pretty impressed with the technology involved -from plasticine to software. Not something I get to see everyday.

I'm thinking of a road trip in a few weekends to Anatori. I've google mapped it & talked to people but a few questions from those that have been there.

To get there I take it you take the pakawau turn off & follow Dry Rd & Cowin rd to Anatori & from there you can get onto the beach. Correct? The road is sealed or gravelled? If sealed is there a gravelled alternative that doesn't show up on google map?

Now stupid question so forgive me - Is the beach sand really loose & sandy (:slap:) needing knobbly type tyres or is it hard packed enough for E07s? If I go alone are the chances of getting stuck on the beach pretty realistic meaning I should just sit & look at it rather than get the bike saltwashed?
I don't think I'd be doing any rivercrossings this time of year but would like to go for a recce for a summer NADS trip.

Yes turn off at Pakawau and soon onto gravel all the way through Westhaven inlet to Anatori (great road) the first river crossing is at Anatori then another 8-10kms of gravel to the next river (deeper) and then sand from there on some soft some hard with big dunes - big beach (and scenery) all the way to Big River which you/we wouldn't cross any time of the year unless mid summer on a very low tide - then another 1km to the lighthouse andf DOC hut. Have guys I work with down there a lot and they get across big river by floating their quads and trikes across. Would be keen to join you.
Cheers

I don't think I'd be doing any rivercrossings this time of year but would like to go for a recce for a summer NADS trip.

cheers

Hey Padders,
Access down there is super easy, even a navigation retard like yourself should be able to make it, hey, you've got a GPS haven't you!!:Pokey:

Dry Rd is mostly gravel with small sections of seal where dust and corrugations become a big issue in summer.
Cowin Rd (Yes, where Jeff"s (Undergroud) family is from) is all gravel and very exposed to the often strong winds which hammer the coast there.
There are 2 main river crossings, first being Paturau River which can flow deep in places, then the Anatori river. there is one last small river at the road end which gets you onto the beach.
Trying to get to the lighthouse further down the coast is not really adviseable unless you have a 4m low tide, as the main estuary down the beach is very tide dependant and has some good sucky deep quicksand type mud.
The main beach riding is all hardpacked sand like Rabbit Island, 100kmph can be reached easily but watch the water runoff channels, they come up pretty quickly at speed.
Standard ADV tyres will be fine, unless you want to look at the soft dunes.......
And then there's the dunes :headbang: ride them at your peril, throttle open, sit right back and pretend you are riding the Dakar. Just remember how those fella's crash too, because it will most likely happen!

Mostly gravel from a few k's past Pakawau turnoff. As far as I'm aware there is only one road in, but looking at mapsource the other day it looks like there are 2 roads. I suspect the one on the true left of Paturau river is a paper road (Karaka rd.), but I could be wrong.
Anatori river is not to deep so long as the stock trucks havn't been through and made holes, no big rocks either IIRC. Never riden on the beach m'self but it was fairly firm when driving on it in the 4wd.
Give us a yell before ya go and I may tag along, if thats o.k., I promise I'll not ride the CT :D

Wanted to get to the end In Dec 2008 but the engine let go.

Nothing exciting out there at all though...

I'm thinking of a road trip in a few weekends to Anatori. It's mostly wide enough that there's hard packed sand between low & high tide lines, and then some. Higher than that can be soft sand, boulder/gravel fields, or sheer cliffs!

From the Patarau River you can ride along the beach all the way to the Anatori - at low tide. There is at least one spot where you will have to go carefully over the rocks, 20-30cm ledges to negotiate - and these are covered at high tide. But the trade off is weaving between rock arches & features etc that you simply won't see on any other stretch of the beach (south to the lighthouse anyway).

I have not been on the beach south of the Anatori River, to the Turimawiwi. I was warned off it due to cliffs etc - but I've also heard it's passable esp. near low tide. Might be worth a look if you are fossicking about. However the road along that section is pretty & interesting anyway.

The Anaweka we didn't even notice. It was just a dozen wee trickles across the beach, and we were too low to see the lagoon itself.

Big River, yeah can only be crossed at a king low tide. About 1 hour after low tide the water is lowest. Get in to the estuary on the true right - it's slick slimy mud but shallow - and then cross the estuary about half way up the wide part. The "track" continues on the other side of the mud flats.

But all the rivers/beaches change with every tide, so this could all be wrong by now!

Other points; with care, you can get to the old carpark at Knuckle Hill, but I don't recommend a solo effort. Take some hauling line in case you have an oopsie and need to retrieve the bike. Stay off the dunes, you won't get very far at all with an adventure bike, but will shift a lot of sand trying. Other fish to fry in that area, as it were.

This is a trip I want to do, too. Apart from riding on the beach between the Patarau and Anatori rivers, I've only walked the rest.

Well is anyone keen on a rideout the weekend after next weather permitting of course? Either Sat or Sunday?
I'd like some company & of course someone to help me pick the bike back up. I'll wait till after next weekend to see if there are many riders left after the XC:2thumbsup

Sounds good.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate MT21 rears?

I had less traction with an MT21 on the back today than with the Shinko 705 last weekend.
Today would have been an ideal 18psi Mitas E07 rear day. Apart from one hill with deep soft loose dirt.

The sun is right in your eyes going west up the steep hills.
Also there's still some slippery stuff around...

I'm not going for a ride today.

1. Pinched tube changing rear tyre from MT21 to Kenda 760 - no spare tubes.
2. Spoke missing from front wheel.
3. Nice 2cm long slice in front sidewall.
4. Not worth the risk :D

Gidday JC. Might be a slight change of plan. After the gge night WW wants to do some sus set up by running the same track a few times. I'd like to do the same but there should be time after that for a bit of spin south. Might be a later start though.

Evening gents

Any of you Nelson fullas around this weekend?

Picking up my bike in Chch on Friday then riding to Nelson with twin Bro on his DR650, gonna do a 1000km ride so I can have it serviced in Chch on Monday then back down to Wonka Monday night.

So we thought we would take the opportunity to meet and catch up with some of you Nelsonians if you are about, we are tentatively planning to leave about lunchtime or just before on Friday.

We need to get accom for the night, basic is cool but sheeted so we don't have to carry sleeping bags and Air NZ has lost our bag with our tent in it so I am buggered (I won't have a rack or anything anyway), any Backpacker or Motels close by to where you are Colin?
