Phwoar a Tenere, that looks to be a mighty big tank, i've heard stories of a 27L unbaffled being a bit of a handful in emergency braking....is that tank size even vaguely true?!

i've heard stories of a 27L unbaffled being a bit of a handful in emergency braking....is that tank size even vaguely true?!Can't see why not. Adventure tanks go up to 50L and beyond. Standard on my 640A is 25.5, was 28L on earlier bikes. The nice thing about it is there's no noticeable slosh due to the design; radiator vent holes help to baffle it, plus the cross-section is thin as it wraps around the frame/carb/engine and the weight sits low. Even without hard braking, TA's big tank on the DR650 would unsettle the front tipping in to almost every corner

It's more of a nylon/plastic mesh than a foam.
Doesn't degrade in petrol.
Planes use it to reduce slosh.

It can make your bike feel a whole lot lighter as there's no slosh type momentum in corners/cornering.

If its nylon/mesh and not foam, am I right in thinking that there is minimal loss of fuel capacity then?

I think about 1%ish loss of fuel.
I have only ever once been a victim of slosh, but it would be interesting to see what actual difference it makes
may have to do a bit of product testing.

can anyone tell me if Korere-tophouse road from Kikiwa to SH6 is sealed or not? trying to plan a loop minimising any sealed roads.

warewolf

Yes, it's sealed... it's the main connection from Nelson to St Arnaud & the Rainbow skifield.

Tophouse Rd, connecting those two roads, is unsealed.

I think you're thinking of Kerr Hill Rd which is the main rd back to nelson from Kikiwa, Tophouse-korere rd tees off just down from the substation at Kikiwa. (according to google maps).

Sorry, getting my SHs mixed up.

Korere-Tophouse Rd is sealed from SH63 to Kikiwa at the junction of Kerrs Hill Rd, which connects it to Golden Downs (at Valley & Stock Rds).

Not absolutely sure, but I think the stretch you're after is sealed. Definitely is, if that is the one that while heading south is a surprise really sharp TR at the bottom of some hilly twisties - like a 135 degree turn. If it is the one I'm thinking of, it is a great road on a fast :scooter: with no :Police:.

(I found this (http://www.zoomin.co.nz/map/nz/tasman/kikiwa/korere-tophouse+road/2323/)via google.)

Hi all, looks like Javahead and jezza will be down next weekend to give the safari bike a good run:woohoo:. At this stage we will be having pizza/drinks at the "Tap" in mapua on the friday night if anyone wants to catch up and talk bikes etc.

The guys get into picton around 5.30pm so should be in mapua around 7.30ish, possibly the best chance you'll have to check out a "real rally(e)" bike in the flesh:drool:.

Not a fan of the shady/damp corners after hearing about Marties spill, got overtaken by another DRZ400SM with a number plate 6 numbers off mine, at least with the adventure rubber I'll have an excuse for taking it easy in the corners.

Been messing with Gonzo this weekend. beefed up the bracket for the ventura rack (piece of shit thing), wired up the socket for the GPS & attempted to change what assorted sized access bolts there were to hex head.
Any way I had to take the nearly full fuel tank off & shit what a weight. 25kgs of top heaviness...
A couple of side fuel tanks 10litres each molded around the frame would be a brilliant idea I reckon. Use the old one for a mooring somewhere.

what would be helpful is to find a way of knowing exactly how much is in that fat tank so you could go on a knarly ride with only x litres confident you weren't going to run out of gas

They heavy aye.

Went for a hoon up central road today to test out the new rear tyre. Found some good tracks up to the left, but was being logged and got a stick stuck in me rear spokkes which then munted the chain guard which I could not remove cos the 10mm spanner was on the bench after fixing mrs woodmans car yesterday:argh: Anyway had to bend it into shape and after a while it stopped making rubbing noises.

After that my toolkit fell off and got tangled round the back wheel and I lost a tyre lever and the special klr plastic toolbox thingy, and unlike padmei try as I might it couldn't be found.

Good ride though and got some airtime:2thumbsup and stayed upright for the whole ride.

BTW there is a guy around the corner with a pile of KLR spares under his house. Not sure what's there but lots of stuff but the frame... If anyone's after something I'll PM his cell.

Quite nice sunset tonight up top of Linton Hill. The firebreak route up is pretty damn cool :scooter: Will definitely have to do some more exploring in there, much has changed since I was there last.

Saw something unusual on the Maungatapu Tk, between the Maitai Rd and the caretakers: a quad parked nose-down arse-up bottom-forward, leaned up against the bank. The things you see when you don't have a camera.

Some roadworks just this side of the first ford, looks like it could become sloppy greasy mud. Went up to the saddle & back, looked really slippery with the rains just gone, but wasn't. Could be due to the rear T63 at 22psi rather than 25. Or the improved shock action now I've got rid of the lowering links.

Reckon we should do a night ride to the Clansman at Havelock, via the big M.

So that 110/90-17 MT60 showed up today...turns out it's a rear tyre, will that be a problem? And if not does anyone mind showing me how to switch it in exchange for:apint: or three? Of course I'd be the one doing it...just a point in the right direction would be great.

I've been told that there's no way it will fit my 3.5" (I think) front

Opinion?

"If in exceptional cases a rear tyre is used as a front tyre the tyre must be mounted against the running direction arrow."
http://www.moto-tyres.co.uk/seitenwandbeschriftungen.html

Does that mean I can fit the rear tyre to the front?

NordieBoy

Bugger.
Put it on and see how it handles.

Grippy knobblish fronts on motards are always a compromise.

I may have a 3/4 worn MT60 front somewhere.

Does that mean I can fit the rear tyre to the front? That's correct. The direction arrows are not just for the tread design but the carcass and bead. (The biggest loads on the front are under brakes, at the rear under acceleration.)

As for the size, try asking in the Motards (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=101) forum, maybe someone's been there done that?

I agree with Warewolf here, it is totally do-able, but be aware that the nice folk at VTNZ may ping you for this when you have to renew your WOF.
If the directional arrow is going the opposite direction to wheel rotation, they can say the tyre is incorrectly fitted.

Willdat?

Ah yes...I suppose I will still have the factory tyre in reserve if I need it, and with 1 year between warrants it shouldn't be too bad...provided I get the hang of changing it.

Actually this has got me thinking, this could quite easily be grounds for insurance not to pay out if I did hit something?

I think (but don't know) that reversed on the opposite rim is acceptable (per the stuff you found, Will, possibly even required) but reversed on the same rim is less clear-cut.

a question for you nelsonites

we are planning to go to the porika via the Wairau valley which I hate with a passion.

How much longer would it take to go via the mangatapu?

what sort of ride time do you think it would give us if we did the following:
Picton
Nelson via Mangatapu
Porika
Breaburn
Murchison
Maruia saddle
Springs junction
Reefton

warewolf

Don't know about the lot, but you could do it in a day fairly easily.

Picton-Nelson via Qn Charlotte Dr and SH6 is 75 mins. Maungatapu is another 20?mins longer.

Porika is A LOT slower than the tarseal, it usually takes longer than a long thing. Maruia Saddle isn't too much slower, as much of its length is fast, it's shorter, and the gnarly bit is only really the 3km down from the saddle itself. Nelson/Murch/Reefton by the tarseal is only 2.5hrs.

You could speed it up (and save energy) by skipping the Porika; take the tar south to Rotoroa then Braeburn to Murch.

You're starting to get the idea (its an adventure ride after all) nip through Queen Charlotte ,over the Maungatapu (doesnt take long if you keep punting along) meet the NN lot and play the rest of the day by ear .

Almost time for the fairing ? Heated grips get swithched on as soon as the bikes started in the morning so they're warm when I start riding.
Whens the next ride ?

Sorry about the timedelay ,just dont seem to get the time during the week to be on here.
I keen to go up the Cobb again soon, when the guys have their Reefton weekend over ,I bent my Dr front rim [ in a creek crossing] a couple of years ago and sent it up to Hamco in Palmerston North who did a nice job at a reasonable cost .

very do-able, I did from here (Richmond) to Reefton via Pigeon valley, Sunday creek, Dry weather Porika, Braeburn maruia, Westbank in 4.5 hours exactly. so if you add 2-2.5 hours onto that for the Picton to nelson its a long but good day, and if you miss the pigeon valley dry weather route take about an hour off.

In the interests of those who don't know the area well its most probably sensible to leave the Nelson stuff till Sunday (if time permits).

Sounds like the club trail ride on the weekend was a mud-fest. Trail bikes sideways on the flat straight bits, bikes resting everywhere on the first decent hill. They shut the track and took an hour to get all the bikes back to the pits.

Glad I didn't take the 640A out there!! Wasn't even going to consider it without adding a fresh set of mud tyres and rim locks. Even then it sounds like it would have been nearly hopeless.

Quite nice sunset tonight up top of Linton Hill. The firebreak route up is pretty damn cool :scooter: Will definitely have to do some more exploring in there, much has changed since I was there last..

Yeah, nice sunrise from up there too. Headed out at 6.30am for a chilly blast in the hills, lots of frost in the Maitai Valley, and all the way up Linton Hill. Note to self... even knobblies suck on frozen ground, where has my traction gone! No frost up on the tops, so had enjoyable ride thru Teal Saddle to Whangamoas, then decided to nip out to Hori Bay. Spectacular views from up there, nice morning light but forgot my camera....doh! Ah well, next time...

Went for a squirt late today, up Linton Hill firebreak and revisiting some tracks along the ridge to Teal Saddle. The initial climb was quite greasy so I was hesitant to go down a few of the steep hills, by myself running out of daylight, not knowing if they were dead ends. Worked around to the bottom of some to approach from the easy end, took a second look at others and went down anyway.

There's surprising amounts of good technical riding in there, steep hills etc, especially when recent rain reduces traction substantially.

Google Earth track log (kmz file) attached.

I wonder when/if they'd ever start subdividing up there? Put me on the waiting list for one of those prime real estate sections! I think water could be an issue up there tho, would need to put in some decent rainwater tanks.

I stumbled upon that the other night - was looking for that 'trig' track just by blundering about - right as dusk turned to dark... was already past my 'time and light' window, but kept going. Decided not to push through this bit, had been on reserve for too long already. Backed out of it after a second half-arsed attempt, turned round and saw the trig... ah! Ding! Lightbulb moment. :sunny:

Managed to get back to the gate with 2mins to spare, thought I'd have 30. :shit: Probably shouldn't have done all the sidetracks on the way back, but hey, that's what riding's about.

Found some more neat tracks, and attempted the steep one between Sharlands Rd and the gun club. Made it up on the second attempt, with about half a dozen stalls and restarts. Would have done better on that try, but on the first failed run some gorse had knocked the fuel tap to off without me noticing, so ran out of go juice about half-way up. That particular track makes an EXCELLENT training are with lots of line selection choice. Plenty of rock steps in amongst the loose gravel and ruts. The bike was alternating between wheel spin and trying to flip when it found grip so clutch, balance and throttle control all get a workout.

Have a few days off work this week, so decided to head over the Maunga about 11.00am. Not a great idea on the morning of a -9 degree grass frost!
Most of the roads were covered in frost by the golf club and the bridges were white with ice.
Anyway, battled on up to the start of the track at all was going pretty well until I got to that huge rutted clay area near the summit. That's where the fun began...................:cold:
Now, trying to pick a good line at with momentum is tricky on that wet clay at the best of times. However, when the water running off has turned to sheets of ice, well...:(
As you'd guess, the front slid out, as did the rear when I gave it a bit of gas to try and straighten/keep going forward!
End result = broken front brake lever and bent rear brake pedal. Took me about 10 mins to get the thing up and turned back down because I had no grip with my boots on the ice!:sweatdrop
Turned around and headed back to town with both my bike and my pride a little the worse for wear.....memo to myself : don't attempt again in a heavy frost!:angry2:

If not, do I just end up Central Rd and detour at my leisure to find the good 'loamy' stuff?Peel off Central Rd to Maitai Face Rd (on your right). Pretty much take any track/firebreak joining on the right hand side. Central/Maitai Face roads run slightly north / downhill of the ridge, the tracks/ firebreaks tend to be on the ridge or slightly south, with frequent connections back to the road. Some are easily doable, some are challenging. That should get you started.

Had an awesome ride today with Nordie, WW & paul. Did some gnarly climbs &descents - lots of fun. PAul & WW sure can ride - pity tho one of the KTMs couldn't keep it's front wheel on the ground - must have had weight differential problems.

The Dr & KLR kept those Austrians honest with some clever chugging up the step bits. I had to cut it short when my foot peg dropped off. Had a cruise back down the road getting a few odd looks from hardcore MX rats.

My kind of riding:woohoo:

Ya did the KLR proud. :woohoo:

We found some more steeeeep tracks, revisited some scenic tracks I hadn't done for a while, and discovered a sh!tload more stuff to explore, eventually popping out back at Thomas Rd.

Plenty of hills to be conquered still. I wanna have another good crack at that steep bit at the bottom of the sun-in-your-eyes track; it will need momentum 'cos there's eff-all traction to be had for an adventure bike :sweatdrop

7th June 2009, 08:55
Hey thats a bit hard Nordie.

The footpegs must have been loose since Reefton as there has been a strnge noise I couldn't work out. Given the big drops it took & having to slide it across the rocks to get it in position I have to say that there's no damage to it. So much for it having "too many plastic bits to break".

I omitted to add that Nordie too can ride his beast. Pisses me off tho that he doesn't drop it.

May have to have another go next wekend. I love it that theres awesome riding 5 mins from home:clap:

If we can learn where the tracks connect, we can have a play on some of the steeper slipperier stuff when it gets wet - knowing how to get out via the formed roads if required. But Hira never really gets that bad, too rocky, so it will be a matter of finding the few clay hills that get 'orrible. I think we found at least one last Sat.

I get my DR250 tonight! Although currently it's not starting so will spend sometime standing and staring at it over the weekend...

I got some $ off it for this problem (was running one night, first time it had been ridden in months, then wouldn't start the next), which I'm hoping is old fuel related.

If anyone wants to swing by in the weekend to assist with the standing and staring that would be sweet.

I'd agree. As said above the Ice between Glen Hope and the Owen is pretty full on yesterday when I rode down. The road was white from edge to edge except the the wheel tracks which looked like sheet ice. No drops or mishaps but I was doing 50-70kph for most of it. If it happens I'd be very keen to come along and have a watch and learn!:Punk:So... is it time we started having 'shed night'?

Casual congregation at someone's shed, for show'n'tell on the bikes? Bring your bike if you have jobs that need doing that you'd like help with. eg basic tuning & maintenance, tyre changes, anything that needs some borrowed tools. Even just giving the old girl a clean while having a chin wag with the rest of us? Or just come along and ... chill.

Great idea Colin, but done under goodwill and an unwritten "all care, no liability" clause attached.
Perhaps an idea to start a separate sticky under maintenance section.
This would be a big help for many on the path to self sufficiency, learning the ability to repair or troubleshoot minor problems whether it's in the workshop or on the side of the road. It's always good to learn this stuff as it can save lots of $$ in the long run and most basic maintenance is relatively easy with the right tools. Some guidance on basic tools for each job would be handy as well, and I'm sure the Nelson locals can pool resources to get things started. Good on ya!:2thumbsup

Yep I'm in for that. I've slowly been building up my bike specific tools & it would be good to pool resources. The no1 thing I want to do is check my valve clearances however do you need to do this cold?

There are a lot of small maintenance issues that are good to get opinions on.

I can share my sparky knowledge - however I have no knowledge of 12vdc

The best thing I've bought in the last couple of weeks is a small red seat on wheels with tool tray & drawer underneath from supercheap auto. $35ish - brilliant!

I'd offer my place but my wkshop is the size of a morris minor. it would be a good time to swap dvds books as well. I have a growing pile of kiwirider & TBAM mags I've read that can be lent out.

So... is it time we started having 'shed night'?

Casual congregation at someone's shed, for show'n'tell on the bikes? Bring your bike if you have jobs that need doing that you'd like help with. eg basic tuning & maintenance, tyre changes, anything that needs some borrowed tools. Even just giving the old girl a clean while having a chin wag with the rest of us? Or just come along and ... chill.

Bring beer, too, for after the hard work is done. :drinknsin

What say you? Happy to volunteer my time & shed to get things started. Has a heater, and at the moment a massive beer fridge: all the space outside the shed.

Sounds like a great idea :niceone:
I've got a 750 motor in bits that will need some attention, or I could bring the CT along for folks to practice on
Can supply a welder, both arc and mig if required and a plasma cutter too if you've got a compressor :Punk:

I could bring my A100 if it hasn't sold (going in the buy-sell next thursday), there's always plenty of things to fix on it!

Great idea Colin, but done under goodwill and an unwritten "all care, no liability" clause attached.

How much $$$
Would it last 1000km of gravel riding?

I can supply a plasma clutter.
It's like a plasma cutter but takes up more room on the floor of the shed and dosn't cut.

Bloody brilliant idea.

padmei , I did my tappets last Sunday and its easy peasy, mind you the shims do not need to be replaced as clearance is in spec, but looking at it it is easy peasy too. hardest part is getting all the shit out of the way.

maybe we could have tyre changing races if anyone has a spare rim and tyre.

We could alternate sheds, mines ok and has a fridge and tea and coffe facilities etc.

$450 ono (I ask for $450 they say $400 I say deal :niceone: )

Its been all good on the seal but you would be a better judge than be about its gravel capabilities. Don't see why it wouldn't. PM me if you're keen.

Yeah, then we can all stand back and admire the number of pinches in the tubes!

Just changed my first tyre today, I just know that I've pinched it, ah well...

I've got a corolla wagon with a towbar (but no trailer) + the DR250 which will need to be trailered anywhere, happy to pick up bikes that need it if I can steal a trailer?!
