I wouldn't mind having a go over the Maungatapu, the GS will make it a new challenge:baby:, but am worried that the tall screen won't fit under the rope at the top.

Pity haven't seen you for years - anyway Mungatapu it is - coffee at Pelorus? and then perhaps Hebberds to Tinline - then Mt Duppa (never been up there) and or Hori Bay? Anything would be good, stabilisers are back on!

Mobil Richmond at 11.00 am Sunday then the caretaker's gate around 11.45.

We all learned how a Rekluse clutch works today. Dismantling it, was as it turned out un-necessary, but we can all file the info we got somewhere in our brains just in case we need it one day.

We all also learned/re-iterated that, before you dive into fixing something it is a good idea to check the basics first.

CrazyFrog
20th July 2014, 20:30
Well, John got as far as town okay, he took his chances and carried on home from there.
Clutch was still slipping under power, but grabbing enough to get forward momentum, so managed 30-40 kmph most of the way down the Maitai.
Glad to be able to help nurse the WRF home.:sweatdrop Uphills were a bit of a struggle, forgot how heavy 120kg trail bikes were to push.

Next time we might get more than 25 km from home

Old bones
20th July 2014, 20:51
Well that was a ride with some variety! For me it carried on as I started(forgot to turn the fuel on.)
Enjoyed meeting all you gentlemen again as well as the new faces (to me)
Was enjoying it until the Rekluse failed to provide forward motion! To cut a long story short Woodman and Nordi came back and proceeded to sort things out while I supplied snakes and moral support. Then the rest of the team came back expecting bodies and body bags, but all was well in that department.Eventually got going only to stop again. At this point the wise advice was to go home and as it turned outwas just as well.
At this stage I must thank Ward (crazy frog) who escorted and rode my bike most of the way out to see that I got out safely. I doubt I would have made It up A couple of the hills by myself.
Got back to the matai and said goodbye to Ward then it was 40-50km/h all the way back to home.
Along Appleby straight :Police: Checked me out said it was routine then when I said if I had been going faster would you have stopped me and he said no and laughed when I said I had a stuffed clutch:violin:
Many thanks to NADS for being concerned and helping while I stuffed up their ride.
Cheers
John

Only got it working properly for about a km.
Hopefully got it on video, revs started picking up and forward motion started dropping off...

Looks like about 400m north of the locked gate up the Tinline, there's a ford that let's you get across to the other side...

What year WR and what model Z Start Pro?

pete-blen
24th July 2014, 19:19
warping the steel plates is a issue with the Rekluse Z start if yer to
easy on the throttle and letting it slip to much heating the clutch..
they were designed with racing in mined... might pay to try some
heavyer tunston balls to produce more force at lower revs..

the Z start also speeds up the notching of the clutch basket
fingers...thus not letting the plates slide...

just hit the throttle harder it cures/stops a lot of the issue with the Rekluse...

Old bones

What year WR and what model Z Start Pro?

It's a 2007 wr and the only info I have on the model is that it is an RMS- 873 which is supposed to be for the Yamaha WR 450F (07-12) and theYZ450F(05-09)

I haven't had time to pull it out to check it yet as I have been busy and most likely won't be able to do it until next week some time.

I did notice that it should have tungsten balls where 3 are missing according to the list of parts.
So what Pete-Blen says is probably what I should do.

John

how meany balls dose your unit hold ?
3?..... usaly there is a even number of balls.. so they should be omited in even numbers...
IE... 2 / 4 / 8 etc... 3 missing would throw the unit out of balance aswell as give uneven pressure...

Old bones
24th July 2014, 21:33
Hi Pete

There are 24 ball bearings in there in an 8-0-8-0-8-0 pattern.

In reading the info I have here the tungsten balls would be every ninth position with total being 27

John

NordieBoy
25th July 2014, 07:48
24 balls is the soft engagement setting. 27 is the recommended hard engagement setting. Tungsten balls are heavier and more suited to fatter riders.

Yep, pretty easy getting up onto the tops and exploring those tracks, but feckin awful coming down the firebreaks. No engine braking, no gears, no bulldogging, just brakes and momentum. I just had a look at Rainbow skifield snow report at 09:00am, they've had 50cm of new snow overnight, and more falling at present. That's a lot.:Punk:

My guess is the Porika will be fully snowed in for a day or two. When I rode up there after the 2010 snowfall, progress on the bike was slow, the track was hard to read under all the snow with ruts/ hidden rocks etc, and at times the knobblies would clog with snow/ice and just wheelspin, so a bit of pushing was involved.
Hard work but mostly fun and worth it for the photos.

Jenni was doing a course in Tahuna today, so I hitched a ride and took the rigid single speed in to have a shufti at Codgers.

Wow. First time I've seen it since the storm. Man it's had the shit kicked out of it.

Is like the Dun trail now, instead of riding along a track meandering through the trees with dappled light, pine scent, roots, pine needles and rocks, you're riding a groomed track tacked to the side of a hill.

Was also my first MTB ride without gears.
5min of dry retching at the Tantragee saddle and then it wasn't so bad after that. Tapped out at 17.5kph on the flats though...

hi Muzz, just to make sure it's not the carb, once it starts missing give it some choke if that improves things keep working on the fuel side
of things ( you would have this fixed by now if it was your xr)

Muzz67
15th November 2014, 07:28
Stator checks out fine,, coil was a bit iffy so swapped with another. No difference at all. Pulled choke plunger, cleaned and checked, all good.
Goin into carb again, as pulls like a schoolboy atfull throttle right to max revs, ease off and misses worse than ever.
Wondering if prob is in the needle now, although they not adjustable in CV carb without using shims.
Bloody CV carbs! What twat decided to design them? What the hell's wrong with the good old roundslide??

Cheers guys,, misses as soon as it goes over 3500rpm, except if at full throttle.

Tried pulling choke on, to see if it was lean,,, died completely. mmmmm.
Seems way too rich, normally choke will make a lot of spluttering and black smoke.
Hooked a piece of clear pipe to the carb overflow and held it up beside carb, turned fuel on and level looks very high.
Virtually up to the height of the inlet mouth??
Float valve seems to stop the flow of fuel if the float is lifted to about level.
How do you check the level on a non-adjustable set-up??
Neither manuals I have list anything?
Cheers!

madmartin
15th November 2014, 16:47
So perhaps it's flooding, quite possible it could create those symptoms and certainly sounds like something you should try and remedy. Is it one of those Honda's with the brass float needle and seat? Once they get old there's a wee lip worn into them and no amount of playing with the float will stop it. You can usually replace them with the rubber tipped jobs, float is a bit of trial and error if you have no specs, but i can give you the XR650R level if you want it Muzz

Final race (but the first one for me) of the MTB series on Sunday. Saturday will be a day of rest :(

Don't know anywhere without steep, gorse and snow covered tracks with deep rivers...

Yeah I wouldn't want to drop the new yamaha just yet Roger haha, I don't know the area too well either. I have done a loop a month or so ago going round wakefield, dovedale, tapawera, and that's about it for my knowledge on routes, but keen as mustard so count me in.

I've never done it but is on my to do list. This was posted on facebook a while ago: https://www.facebook.com/tom.jenkins.3304/media_set?set=a.10152402753361845.1073741833.52178 6844&type=1 (You need an account to view)

Looks like fun but I don't think that it's suitable for tomorrow. I was thinking about exploring some roads I know in the Motueka River Valley. There are a couple of ways to get there from Brightwater but Most likely follow the gravel through Dovedale to Ngatimoti. Taking a few detours..

Meet at the carpark behind the Brightwater Motor Inn at 10am. That's on River Terrace Road.

Sorry John but it's meant to be raining Sunday. Also, I only have a leave pass for Saturday.

Faaarken awesome ride. Maude/maggie track was way cool. lots of swift deep bouldery crossings. Everyone dropped their bike at least once, and I even gave a demo of how to undrown an airhead. Had to nurse bike home as it wouldn't supply any horsepower and was down to first over spooners. Suspect that the paper air filter is wet and won't let any air through. Lost my sidecover on the Porika if anyone is going over.

Nice one, sounded like a good day. It surprises me this track does not get mentioned/ridden more often, heaps of people do the Porika and yet right there is the entry to the Maude Track awaiting with its slippery bouldery river rocks ready to test your ability to keep your bike vertical!!

Hey you Nelsonites - in respect to your recent ride, what's the state of the Porika at the moment?
Group of us with spoke wheels & reasonable ground clearance (I wont mention brakes) are looking at going down it next week.

All ok yesterday - the usual rutted rocky steep bit on the lake Rotorua side but other than that just one unexpected deep puddle about half way through, the rest all good. Easier from east to west.

Fitted cast yamaha rim into Dominator. Got bearings which suited yam outer and Honda axle and went straight in.
Just need 15mm trimmed off the shoulder of the axle to centre rim properly.
Nordie: I never did manage to get hold of ya bro,, does he still have the old XR parts?

I wouldn't mind selling the 350 and doing something similar to a modern(ish) DR250.

oh...the zombie bike, it currently resides in the container down by our beach.
I have 2 of them, neither run(electrical problems) ,must get one running for the grandkids, but too much to do.

Vintage rego (and possibly cert :innocent:) is going to be my goal - just can't justify paying the full whack for something that will do <1000km/year

This, with lights and a seat...

I don't need no electrics (well I'll need a CDI but they're wayyyyyyy cheaper than DR250 ones...). So let me know if you can bear to part with one!
