That sucks Nordie.

Sadly if you take up smoking you'll now start a fire in your dash when you go to chuck your butts in the ash tray.
On the bright side you can now give up this mad peddling malarkey and ride your TT more.

Theives are the lowest form of scum, lets find out who the little f**kers are and go break their kneecaps

Maungatap is rideable. There is a chain just below the summit on the Nelson side that you will have to walk bikes under. Signs at each end says it is closed, but bikes are ok. Takes about half an hourish (never timed it tho) possibly more.

Padmei
23rd November 2013, 06:40
Prob more like 45minsish if you stop for pics. Just be a bit wary if any of you have fully loaded big bikes as part of the downhill side has a shaley bit where braking a big bike might be dodgy. At the nelson end there is a gate but you'll see there is a little bypass to the right of it up a clay bank.

Wait you're prob not even gonna read this before hand aye?

About 105km by memory, should take around 2 hrs, depending on riding style;) Nice winding road.
Only the last 20 km or so is gravel, the rest is sealed up to Elaine Bay turnoff.

Fuel is avail at Okiwi Bay shop, and beer at pub on the hill. If you're lucky, the French Pass café might be open for food, otherwise it's back to Okiwi.
Have fun, bastards.

Speaking of gorse and overgrown, you should see that knarly bit beside the mtb(spit) downhill track up Ben nevis way. Almost impassable. Made me turn back last week even going down hill.

A mission up there is due and the right branch must be really bad now too. Last time a slip made me turn back and lots of it was like riding in a tunnel. River crossings were good though.

I think crazyfrog was going thru there today. Is that the one linking thru from molesworth to rainbow?

Yup, rode it solo today after hearing about it from some 4wd'ers at work who'd been through last weekend.

Did a loop Nelson - Rainbow to Lake Sedgemere, Severn track to Molesworth, to Jollies intersection and continued on up Rainbow without stopping in Hanmer. Got back to St Arnaud fuel stop on the smell of fumes, I misjudged the distance from Severn River intersection back to Rainbow.
Bloody windy today and quite cold, was 8deg at start of Rainbow this morn and 12deg when I got back to St Arnaud at 1pm, so I'm a bit knackered, not too ride fit at the mo. 420km round trip.
Nice to do a new track, it's okay but not stunning, the Malings Pass ride is better IMO. Good to ride on some grass though instead of boney gravel, hell the Rainbow seemed extra lumpy today, the big chunks of gravel and bad grader work nearly shook my fillings out. There seemed to be more than usual scree slope damage on the road and the rocks were sharp as sharp thing, got a few good cuts on the T63 is was using. Had nothing to do with spinning it up of course.
Took a few photos, will do a RR soon. Maybe on ADVrider cos they aren't photo Nazis over there.

Just a track really, as for technical, a blindfolded retard could ride it with falling off.... unless it was wet and the bike was shod with Deathwings and the grass was REALLY slippery, and you still had no skills.

Went for a ride today to try & find the old Whangamoa rd entrance. Is the one we went down (with the tank trap) the same one that has the big rocks now in front of it? if I wasn't on a wide bike I coulda squeezed past & had an explore.
To get to the other end do I have to go past the Mt duppa carpark & keep going round? I turned back there cos I was sure there was a side road we went down to hook up to it. The only side roads go to skidder sites where there is lots of dumped shit there.

I was sure I had some tracks marked on my gps but couldn't find them.

The top end is not far from the top of the hill, right next to a sign.

Why the confidence issues on the tar? A DR on the twisties is a pretty good mount tho.

Never have been that confident on the road, and am so used to the KLR and I ride that sorta dirt style on the road kinda. At the moment its a corner speed thing and the bike feels big and wallowy. The bike is capable, its a rider issue. Time on the road will fix it.

Yup, can get in via Mt Duppa. Its not a bad ride Mt Duppa and a good way to miss a heap of highway when going to blenheim.

I went through the Mot Highway and dry weather road then st arnaud, then home. Was nice although am having confidence issues cornering the BMW on tar. Got owned by a guy on a DR650 in the twisties and pretty sure he wasn't even trying.

On the other I had to be a wanker & pass a couple of oldies round the outside of a corner on the Whangas- their riding was painful to follow...

I had two of those as work benches at one stage. They don't go low enough or they don't go high enough depending on what you're trying to do. It's kinda like that 'the chances of your toast landing jam side down is directly proportional to the price of your carpet' sort of things.
Mine were a shade over 600mm from memory when lowered.

Went to go for mtb ride up Codgers. Track was closed yeah yeh yeah how bad could it be?
I rode up the road from OK corral to the treatment station & from what i could see the lower part of Codgers is absolutely annihilated. Hundreds of pines have been uprooted & are down on the bottom tracks. It was like a giant had brushed a huge hand across them knocking them over.
I can see there is to be a lot of work needed to reinstate the tracks- it looks like specialist work too not just working bees. A shame really.

I had to ride up the road to Fringe hill instead - argh my legs...

I'm def going moto riding in the weekend if anyone else is up for one.

Insane winds, watching tree after tree be uprooted and fall was something else, a little unnerving at times of the intense gusts. With all the trees down the view has changed, dramatically...

Shit! sounds like it hit really hard down there.
I didnt even have to take my boat back to its safe mooring and we got just the right amount of rain to soak everything and keep the hydro running.

We didn't have any wind to speak of. Although one of my gumboots got a little damp by the front door.

That's surprising, I thought Nelson had some pretty fierce winds; your hospital lost its roof!! http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/9956222/Storm-maintains-its-grip

Glad to hear your water motorbike is safe =) Amazing how there was little wind your's and Nordiboy's way when, when just 80km away (as a crow flies) were 140km gusts and serious damage. I came through to Chch today and saw first hand the number of trees down along the Coast. Not just single trees, large areas decimated. Quite sad, but then again, just a cycle of nature. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/9975198/Cyclone-Ita-devastates-West-Coast-forests

It was more the direction of the wind. We have many trees next to us & are quite exposed but none came down. The centre of town got a hammering. From the damage it is almost like a tornado hit - but it wasn't. All the tree gangs were out in force yesterday
When the other big storm hit a couple of year ago customers on the other side of town hadn't noticed the wind- it seemed to skirt around them.

Here's a good vid

Hi people I'm interested in getting up to have a look at the old Champion copper mine/smelter up the Aniseed valley. I know you can get to the smelter on a mountain bike, but how far could i get my XR? There must be a gate up there somewhere and my lardy ass isn't going to lift it over any of them. Topo maps does show a vehicle track almost as far as the bottom of the United mine gully though.

Had a poke around there on the GS a few weeks ago. Everything was a deadend. One track may have gone further, but I wasn't game to cross the creek on my lonesome.

Edit. So no help whatsoever really.

it does look like the gate just before that ford is locked, well it's marked as locked on the map anyway. If thats the case you'd have at least a 3km walk to the smelter site, fair bit more up to either mine

Any of you Nelson fella's know the current state of the Porika?
I'm travelling next week on a loop of the South Island before the Brass Monkey, and plan to ride through Porika, Braeburn, Maruia.

Are they all open, no trees down etc? And OK for big adventure bikes at the moment?

I was through there about 8 weeks ago and it was in great shape after a recent grading. I have not been through since the Easter storm, it is quite probable that there are trees down with regards to trees down in so many other places.

Some tracks in/near Karamea took serious effort to clear with chainsaws and tractors. If there are trees down it will get cleared, just depends on how soon the power company prioritises it or need to do maintenance up there

I remember this slip being like this for quite some time before it was fixed up

Thanks RMOTO & JATZ, that's quite a slip - I won't be taking the BMW across anything like that - perhaps better suited to the DR.

I followed Padmei's advice and called DOC in St Arnaud. They were not aware of any current issues on the Porika, but didn't sound completely sure - So I'll give it a go.

Cheers, Bruce.

It's easy enough to turn round if it is impassable. Weather here is pretty crap just now so it may be pretty sketchy.

I will be heading down on Wednesday, travelling with a small group down through Queenstown, Te Anau, around the south coast/Catlins, then up to the rally on Saturday.

Recent weather will make it interesting - Will probably still check out the Porika, my question was mainly in case it was known to be closed with trees down etc. I'm also travelling on a yet to be dropped BMW with the original Battle Wing tyres, so not much grip (and plenty of caution) if the going gets too "off-road".

Yeah it was great. The road is good. There is a short section where the slip was that may be slippery on the bike as the raod is clay but apart from that it is easily rideable. A few fricking signs pointing the direction of the closest bridge wouldn't go amiss:brick:

No snow or gorse to speak of, lots of mud though and plenty of practice with the pruning saw and lifting bikes over trees. The mighty DR almost let me down too :( You go to start it and it acts like it's flooded, drain the float bowl and it's usually away. Not this time. Flattened the battery and eventually it decided I'd had enough punishment and started. Left it running after that.

A work colleague likes the sound of adventure riding, even after all the boring smoko stories, but he only has an old Harley, so he has convinced me to let him borrow the KLR and take him on a few rides to see how he likes it, which I am happy to do as its just sitting in the back of the shed doing nothing. He was wondering about what happens if he damages it, but I have assured him it is now unbreakable, and if it does get badly damaged their will be more to worry about than a broken bike.
