Why don't we just spend the day riding laps around Mapua drinking coffee between laps. Saves wasting energy doing all that superfluous stuff like adventuring...:eek5:

Reeeeealy laid back ride, Nordie'll have some pics later I guess.
At least you took a camera, mind you I was too busy trying to keep up and keep the bike going where I wanted it to go I wouldn't have had time for pics
Note to self...... ditch E-08's on little bike

glad to hear you got home ok - I felt a brief microsecond of guilt as I dissapeared off into the distance at the foot of the hill. Did it stay running right for the rest of the ride home?
I wore the sole of one of my boots down to the nails going over the hill - I have to get a scrambler
great ride thanks guys
Tim and Dan had a blast as well
we'll be heading over the mangatapu around 1sh if anyone (woody?) is interested in joining us.

Nice relaxed ride yestderday. We went up the hill to the Harwood hole carpark. The road was looking very recently graded & yep around the corner comes the big big grader on a narrow road.
I (of course) had to sit on a few bikes (love those BMs). Had a tootle around on Tim's Scrambler. I felt like I was straight out of a '60's movie. Also had a blast on Jatz' KLX - shit that was hard to keep going around a corner.
Down along East takaka road to a long leisurely lunch at Toatally Roasted in Pohara then called into see Des Malloy from "The Last Hurrah" fame. He had an impresive shed full of bits & pieces including another old BMW, the Panther of course & surprisingly the beautifully designed motorcycling icon the Aprilia Moto 650.
We finished the avo off with a cruise up to the Cobb Reservior, a shaded piece of twisty riding nirvana. Once there we did a bit of rarking around on the flat airstrip then back home at a respectable hour.
A good day out:2thumbsup

Went looking for the Brit boys this arvo. Couldn't find them at the Ace Cafe so headed over the mongatap and found Nordie coming the other way. We had a look at that old house up there and then I headed up Hori bay and did some exploring and hill climbing. There are some awesome tracks up there and the views out to sea are amazing. Definitely warrants more intensive exploring.

Woody, check out Nelson motorcycle club website......
The annual Morley Honda Six Hour is being run September 27th at Christie's Forest, signposted on the Tophouse-Korere Road, Korere.
Entry Forms have been mailed to past racers and they can be completed online as well, so with over 180 riders and $6,000 in prizes the past two years this will again provide some great racing!
For more information please contact Paul at Morleys 03 544 8703 or service@morleymotorcycles.co.nz
Last years course was definitely an enduro style course, with some good technical bits, mud holes and other challenging bits. Beware of kamikaze quad riders who won't think twice about running you over if you don't get out of their way, and the expert riders WILL roost you, they are there to race.
If you can find a smaller bike than the KLR, go for it, but 6hrs (or 3 hours in a team of two) is still a long time at race pace wrestling a big heavy pig.
I wouldn't think of doing it on the 640, but the DRZ is looking tempting. Maybe next year tho, I would die trying to ride it in 3 weeks time, just not fit enough this year, too many pies and curries over this winter. Arm pump hurts:crybaby:..... oh, and monkey butt hurts too.

National Motorbike Show at Founders on Sunday...
Some of you may recognise some of the riders in the DVD playing at the Nelson Motorcycle Club stand :innocent:
I hope there is a bit more emphasis on adv/off-road this year.
Was disappointed that it was 95% road bikes last year.....

For me 1/4 turn is an on/off switch.

For me 1/4 turn is an on/off switch. The 200 has a 1/4 and it's too much (I thought it was 1/2 before I checked). The second half need not be there, ie I only feather 0-50% then jump to 100%. Might need to investigate a cammed throttle that's only 1/8 turn.
What time does the MC show go till?10am-4pm IIRC.

I'm very tempted by a TM40 but tweaking the rear suspension is going to come first.

Just put a knobblie on the front and a nubblie on the rear and am going up Hira tomorrow too.
Might do the show in the morning then lunch and Hira.
Meet at my place before heading up?

Well the bro-in-law has abandoned the idea of riding as a team.
He's Ironmanning it :Punk:

Put the E07s on today( only took about an hour- I'm getting better) & went for a 20min blast around Hira. Shit I am really impressed with them.
For a more road biased tyre they were great going up Bobs Fern 1. No probs at all on loose rock, NO sideways action at all on gravel (yeah ok I do ride like a nana but gave it a bit coming out of the corners & held in there really tight), & good on the odd bit of mud. Very confidence inspiring...
Now I take the great grip to be due to the nice hard edge cos they're new. How long do you think before they'll lose that edge & get looser? Will they get noticeably looser?
Topo I'm taking it you're putting knobs back on for the ironman?
ps. The cruisy ride put me in a pretty mellow reflective mood & not wanting to sound too zen or girly soppy I appreciate the help & advice I've had from fellow Kbikers over the past year, (gonna go & get a Guy Ritchie movie to harden myself up a bit now)

That way you can grab a fresh, clean pair every lap, even if you don't need fuel. You'll want them. Pit crew can prep the second pair while you're out.

Do it.
Shane has found a new (old) muffler for it that only has holes where they traditionally are so it'll be a bit quieter.

The rubber compound is really good on them.
Good grip until they're bald.
20psi and they'll go over anything.
32psi on the road.

Don't worry about the CT Nordie, it's sitting behind the shed with about 7psi in both tyres, just waiting for the opportunity to cut loose.Should be good for a 6 hr outing, I rode it round the house last w/end

Do it.Really gonna have to, methinks. Will cost me for a race licence but should be needing it next year anyway... fingers crossed. Will talk later.
We will have to form a team/share pit/crew with Topo. I've even thought up a name: Nelson Adventure Noddys Amalgamated (NANAs).
BTW how long is the course on this 6hr thingy you fullahs are on about ?From my race log 2007: 32.5km laps, 6 laps in 6hr03min (ie missed starting 7th lap by 3 mins). Some firm clay uphills, long descents. Position 27/50 in Ironman class. Avg moving laptime was about 45 mins. The fog was an issue as it hid the track ahead in some fast ridge-top sections.
Tyres were Bridgestone Gritty ED661 front (a little worn) and BF Goodrich Crossengo rear (new), I was happy with them. The road-legal rears are popular because they last the distance; stuff like the Crossengo, Michelin AC10 etc. MX tyres last a 3hr XC but sometimes struggle with the 6 hr, especially with the large forestry road component (something like 2/3 the track distance, 1/2 the time), so "they" advised me.

One cool thing about adventuring I've noticed on a couple of recent rides is the wildlife.
Monday's Maungatapu ride I startled a deer (doh!)and we stared each other down for 20s before she ambled off into the bush.
Tuesday up Ben Nevis and coming down from the start of the tramping track I watched a scrum of 5 tiny black pigglies meander across the road and up the bank into the bush.

Went for me first hoon up the Cobb today. Nice views and not a soul to be seen anywhere. Went right up past the dam to look for those tracks Nordie was talking about but couldn't see any sign of them. Went up few sidetracks near the pipes and that was good.
Followed the pole track loop and that was cool with a few downed trees to ride under and over. Don't think it was a walking track:Playnice:
Didn't like the fact that the road is paved with marbles, that and my first ride with a full fuel load (26 litres) the normally superb handling was not up to its usual standard. Good day out though and managed to make myself car(motorbike) sick coming back over the Takaka hill.

Was this weekend, I'm completely fecked! over 24hrs later and I still cant lift my arms up properly. Turns out 150kg is a bit much for an event like that:Oops:
Will post some photos that katie took on thursday once we get our broadband back (ran out of MB or sumthing like that).

Andrew's bike wasnt' ready after being stripped following the aust safari so he was there with katie as my support crew - CHEERS JAVAHEAD:niceone:
The Twisted Pair seemed to have a good day but i'll let them tell their story.
If anyone knows of any good deals on a sub 110kg mx/xc bike i may be interested:shifty:

If you wanna borrow the klr next year for a few weeks prior to the 6 hour we can arrange a swap. After that the ktm will feel as light as a feather.
Goodonya for doing it.

Was a top day!!! Awesome riding. 25km lap, we did 4 laps each, with Nordie starting his 4th lap at 5h58m.
Team Twisted Pair won the longest-time-for-a-first-lap award, at around 3x the fast guys. :2thumbsup
The mighty 30 year old Honda went very well, with the brakes being the weak link... or perhaps one could say missing link! :argh: Made for very conservative downhills because they all terminated in a steep rough drop-off back onto the forestry roads (ie at right angles). Had to be a bit circumspect about the brakes, and as the day wore on and the speeds picked up, it took a lo-o-o-ong time to stop for the 1st gear corners at the end of the faster 4th/5th gear forestry road sections.
Front suspension was outstandingly good, rear not far behind (ha ha!). The gearing was a bit of an issue; on most of the steep uphills it would top out 2nd gear then fail to hold 3rd, and on the steepest uphill about 2/3 around it topped out 1st but wouldn't hold 2nd. Very forgiving bike to ride vs the 200 2T, it just tractors up anything even at idle in first gear where the 200 would be alternating between wheelspin and wheelie (and stall :crybaby:).
I passed several bikes that don't count: the Shineray XGY200 thingy, topo when he was touring with cramp, a KLX(?) with a rider in a road/adv jacket, and a few quads - both up and down hill. There was really very little traffic. The only real battle I had was late in the day with a Honda CRF....450 (I think - single muffler job, all the CRF250s are twin mufflers??). He was slightly quicker on the roads once I passed him the first time, but he couldn't sustain the pace so I chased him down again and passed him a second time under brakes into another 1st gear uphill corner :eek5: The first time was because when he got on the brakes, I had to go up the inside to avoid hitting him  and I think he was as stunned as I was - him for being passed by a 30yo bike, and me for getting the bike to actually stop in time . The second time I think he was surprised to see me there... again... and didn't put up a fight. Bizarrely I caught him a couple of times on the technical downhills... that's just plain wrong.
Did I mention how much fun it was!!! :2thumbsup

I did almost the slowest first lap.
The first hillclimb was a Km or so in and when I got there the logjam was 30-40 odd bikes at least. Topo had got through (just) and from then on noone got through for 10 mins.
Quads were rolling as they tried to turn and squishing riders and bowling 2-wheelers :D
Next time I'm racing with a camera.
I spent over half an hour at the bottom of that hill before I got a chance to try it and got up 1st go.
The fast guys were blasting up the hill, lapping us, when we were still waiting for it to clear. I copped a supersonic softball sized rock a glancing blow off the chinpiece from one of them.
1hr 40min for my 1st lap :woohoo:
My last lap was my best though...
Quads and 2-wheelers littering the track right from the start. One guy killed his quad half way up a technical climb and sat beside it (and under it out of the sun) for the whole race...
Only one arsehole passing manouver the whole race and it was 50m from the walking pace only pits where the guy just bashed into the side of me before dropping down the last bank.
A good fun day.
Apparantly at the prizegiving Sean Clarke mentioned catching up to a twinshock XR250 and the XR getting the drive out of the corner and beating him to the top of the hill :D
A good chance I wasn't riding it then...

I was looking over my shoulder when I copped the biggest hit on my helmet, glad I didn't cop that one on the face. Some of those hills were so steep & loose, it's the first time I've watched rocks rolling down the good line towards me! :D

Definitely suspect, trimming 25% on the last lap. We thought you were out for mid-40 mins.
I know I was a lot faster and I was buzzing after but not that much quicker.
I was standing and pulling 2nd as much as possible on the climbs instead of sitting in 1st but that would only gain 3-4 mins.
3rd instead of 2nd down some of those long downhills.
43-44 mins at best.
That lap felt good. I knew there were only a couple of others that could possibly be behind me so didn't have to worry about being passed and just enjoyed it.
No dust, no traffic, no pressure.
I was hitting apexes properly and wheelying off bumps like I hadn't and should have all race.
Even the muddy section I finally went on the left and couldn't believe how much easier it was than the right.
I'm getting hyped up just typing this :D
Have I mentioned it was a fun lap? :2thumbsup
When's the next one!

Yep, each lap just got betterer and betterer. Mid-way through lap 2 I'd learnt the bike and the track, and was able to pick the areas I could attack harder. By then I was thinking/planning about the bike and the track ahead, rather than wondering and worrying and being caught out by the bike's characteristics.
Awesomely fun day :2thumbsup

Was there. With knobs on.
Did a clockwise loop this time. I think anti-clockwise is more fun though.
Went up a vaguely familiar feeling bit of road only to come out to the other side of the Scout Road washout :D
Did a nice bit of 0.75 track too.
If it was a bit wider it would have been single track.
Went onto reserve 500m after I left Topo at the carpark.
The knobblies may not have given more grip today but did give more confidence.
I think I'm going to put the MT21 on the front as the Innova enduro tyre is a bit sluggish with 18psi and the weight of the bike.
Good fun.

We passed the first on the way to and on the way back from Hori Bay.
