chuck this bugga on and you would only need fueling once a month http://www.dual-star.com/index2/Brand/Honda/honda%20xr650r%20rally%20tanks.htm
I have one of these 23ltr tanks on my XR, its great, lowers the bikes centre of gravity and I can get about 330km out of a tank. Never seen the rare tanks before, they look great, I really like that rally look, unfortunately they are well out of the budget

In the interests of fuel mileage, I removed the fuel bowl and unscrewed the main jet, which was a 175.
Calif spec ran a 125, so I soldered up the 175 and stuck a 1.25mm drill bit through.
Started, ran and revved ok, in the shed .
Test ride today to verify running.
Incidentally, I got 100Km till I hit Reserve, on Sunday.
Am running the tank dry in two stages to check range.
UPDATE;
Righto, 132KM.....tip bike over, then ran out again at 160.1KM total fuel range.
Refilled tank 10.9L.
125 jet ran well up till one third throttle, then started gasping.
But ran ok at 110Kmh cruise.
Decided to raise the needle up 2 clicks for the heck of it. This should not help mid and top: it didn't !
In fact the bottom end was a bit worse.
The theory now is to return the needle to its No. 3 mid position and drill the main jet progressively bigger till it runs satisfactorily up top.
Then the needle will be lowered to run as lean as possible at one third throttle, or less, the range in which most 'ADV' riding occurs.
That's the theory.......

JET DRILLS ARE KING DINO ! :niceone:
FINAL Test;
Put needle right Down.
Tried 135......then140......then 145 which ran very successfully.
SO:
MAIN JET....... 145
NEEDLE.......... FULLY DOWN
IDLE MIXTURE...... 2.5 TURNS OUT.
We'll see how it goes.......

For 'YOUR' 'XR650R' that may well be true. It already sounds abnormal re the fuel tank !
What CO readings are you getting throughout the Rev range, on the Dyno then ?
Funny how the main complaint about XR650Rs is, that 'they chew thru Gas'.
Hardly a trait for a lean running engine don't you think ?

bit of both, i got sick of mucking around with the jets and the slide, wasnt keen on mucking with the throttle tube. seems to be a bit of a trait with the 600 slide carb, its alright though, it caught me out a few times when i first started riding it, just part of it roughly charm:laugh:
looking at an upgrade when the budgets allow maybe FCR pumper or makuni flatside.

Hi guys,
Thought I'd chime in...I have the stock carb that has been rejetted for my FMF exhaust which I might add just failed me on a warrant for being to loud!
My bike runs pretty sweet, I do play with the idle a bit when it's cold however on a whole the engine runs fairly smooth.
I haven't even considered the edelbrock or whatever it's called as I am happy enough with how the engine runs, you need to weight up cost vs power gained as the edelbrocks are fairly bloody expensive. To be fair, in my opinion I have more than enough anyway, so seems like a waste of money
If your XR isn't running right I'd firstly change the spark plug and airfilter, new plug makes a massive difference to ease of starting, and obviously valve clearances need to be right. I have also drilled some holes in my airbox to let it breath a bit better, I do tape these off if I'm expecting watercrossing as it can be a bit more vunerable to drowning
Be interested to hear what difference a new carb makes to your bike if thats the avenue you go down

Hi Guys.
Recently bought me the said beast [ 2003 ex tauranga trademe deal]. Want to ride the corners differently to the Hog line. I am changing the back sprocket to 45 as it had a 40 and the front is a 15. A little more get up and go expected. In the process figured the rear wheel bearings were shot, so have replaced them. Chain is knackered as well and need to go up from 106 links to 108/110 as she wasnt long enough to go 40 to 45t. Is anyone selling the stainless wheel spacers as the alloy ones are all cut out by the seals. Also any particular chain recommendations O ring or otherwise. running a Pirelli scorpion rear tyre.
Cheers for any info.

Thought saving myself a coupla hundy by sending my doodlings into an engineering shop was worthy of a post!
Drew this out over a couple of beers with the neighbour, $25 later the Local Engineering shop hands it back with edges ground back and folded correctly. $4 bucks worth of bolts $10 worth of paint (Mitre10 Volcano Orange being an exact match) and a tin of standard primer. So say $50 bucks all up.
$225 US off Just XR's web site for a brand new one! Nothing on TM or Ebay for ages so gave up waitin.
Had an old givi plate in the junk box so have put it to good use! Have another if anyone wants it!.
So having finished this major project lol I'm brave enough to try and fit that stupid tank.
Biggest issues being securing the rear of the tank to the chassis. I got a cheap seat off TM which I have to wop about 100mm off to marry up to the new bigger tank, so I will get it recovered as well. Handle bar risers will sort out the steering lock issues (Bars hit tank at full lock) and last but not least the twin fuel taps (hopefully just a Y connection and maybe an inline fuel filter).
Got to talk nordie into swapping tanks so they match our bikes too (could be a hurdle)
Not bad I reckon for someone mechanically inept!

I did end up with another Uly. The Honda is a cool bike and handles really nice, But... I cant consider taking the other half at all as the R is obviously only set for the rider. I knew this when I picked up the Honda and didn't think it would be a problem and then murphy presented me with a dilemma , a mint 09 Uly came up and I couldn't resist. The seduction of that crazy paint shakin 1200 just drew me back. The Uly is an addiction that was in the end too hard to kick. I Plan to be keeping the 12X for a very long time this round. So thats it really I dont ride enough as it is and having 3 road registered bikes is just too much hassle these days. I have an older TT350 thats also in limbo, need to spend a few dollars on that too. Should get off the net and into the shed.
As usual I spent a few dollars on overdue maintenance on the Honda straight up, but if you like good gear thats what happens. Im sure your all used to that scenario.
Does anyone know the guy who put the Buell into the tree Hawkes Bay way a few months back and did he pull through ??
Also looking for a better sounding exhaust for the XB and a spare drive belt. Anyone?
Cheers

I was lucky and brought mine from a guy who had fully rebuilt the engine and suspension, but as a big thumper you want to look at the usual areas, piston slap, conrod noise etc. I would personally stay away from something that doesn't look as if it has been well maintained. The 650 wants it's tappets done every 1000k for example. Found this just now, there's others too...

Will dig out a photo's my supermoto wheels but mine are RGV250 wheels I picked up separately on TM which I then had painted but I believe CBR250 wheels are the same.
I have a oversize brake disc on my XR so the RGV front disk was to small. I went to a bike wreckers in Chch and rifled thru a bin for a suitable disk which happened to be off a zxr250, got spacers machined up and voila! Only thing I haven't properly sorted is the speedo, at the moment I use a pushbike speedo but r considering splashing out on a vapor speedo.

Pretty sure mine CBR - has honda stamped on rims - mate whose a walking encyclopedia on bikes mutted CBR 400
If I was setting up a motard set I'd go for a set second time round where you can do a quick straight swap out from dirt bike rims
to motard - I'd prob just go for another set of XR rims with road tyres - I found bugger all difference ripping round the hills between having the XR rims shod with EO7's and the motards with battleax tyres.
Motard set up has a 525 chain - xr wheel spacer removed on the chain side and thin metal shim used between hub and swing arm, 38 tooth sprocket (15 on front) turns the revving thumper into the sound of a honda water pump ticking away at 100 Km/h - had round 55 - 60 miles to the gallon on runs even with having blasts along the way ....

Interesting, i've tried road tyres on my standard rims and found them seriously lacking, admittedly the rear was a piece of jelly and would overheat in no time... quite entertaining down the local goat track between Havelock and Picton and a lot less work than the R1 on a bumpy twisty as road. Surely the motard conversion would give you more grip tho, you get a bigger contact patch.

Never tried road tyres on the XR rims but found the mitas E07's had amazing grip on tar - was told they that good some of the supermoto guys had used them - herringbone
tread pattern - got 6000 k's out of the rear. Herringbone pattern was a shocker on grass and mud - went through few throttle tubes , grips, new handlebars, and clutch lever that year :D Good on shingle.
Probably balances out with the pig being designed to carry 21 inch front wheel and to be shod with the correct width tyre, had 140 e07 - maybe even better with 120 (the 140 did equate to 130) - was told you can goto wide and weight of your vehicle is not centered where it should be (something like that :D) aquaplane easier in the wet.
I was expecting an even bigger step up in handling with the motard rims but was not the case, probably because I already had fantastic grip.
Wouldn't think it be the rims causing ya hot rear.

Does anyone know of any road bike wheels that will fit the XR6 without mods
I note you do not own an XR650R, yet you ask questions as if your bike was one.
Do you realise these are totaly diiferent bikes.
I don't know whether your wheels etc are the same as a 650 ?
I am sure people answer all your questions assuming u hv a 650.

Edlerbrock or Minkuni pumper carbs (however spelt)
XR's only should have them, ebay sometimes, maybe bike bandit and the like, chuck XR650R aftermarket carb into the google machine,
common as - or use factory XR650R - beaut carb !
What's Johnny thinking - can't beat cubic inch ! 200 cc down - 200cc its like another bike tacked on moving that rear sprocket - all about sales eh

thanks for the help
I have the NX650 in A GB400 so I dare not put up pics as its a road bike
Just trying to get the bike to stop back firing on close of throttle as its a bit disconcerting I don't want to run it to lean
I had a look at the air cut of valve seems fine so I will try for a bigger main jet as the pilot jet is spot on with the Air mix screw 1.5 turns out
It was a 48 now its a 57 still have the 155 main in it but think it might like a 160 ????
might need a new carb but hopefully not
dino3310
20th November 2012, 20:23
yeah try the 160.... cheaper than a carb if it works:laugh:
could be a lot more richer but, i just replaced the whole lot when i had trouble with mine although i did go up a size on each. Hows it breathing, will it back fire 'say if you had the cover of the air box'(might be a bit extreme) could be a bit restricted.
'nikau' on trademe's a good one for carb kits, bits and bobs
still wana see a picture:yes:

One Baja race and the 450 is toast - bike manufactures these days in certain area's have killed the market and then created one by offering little choice (2 strokes thrown out of MX parity races) don't sell many parts with 2 strokes - as we know parts market is where the real money is - same with the xr650r - don't sell many parts with a bike that can do 80,000 plus km on same set of rings - doubt ever see its return.
No electric start good weight saving measure ....

Nordie bro knew the make to ride :msn-wink:
Yeah love the backfiring on de-acceleration - hot sound like when a sprint car lets off the gas :D
Gave Helen of Troy a ride on mine and I jumped on her ST4 - she grew horns and out and passed all the Wednesday night riders
coming off a corner - when she stepped off it she said "I absolutely love it - Bangs - Burbles - Crackles all over the place"
she was keen for her son casualty to have a go - he did - few weeks later they drove down south and bought one :niceone:
Maybe they built a 5 speed box for strength over a six speed - bit like the 5 speed in a falcoone meant to be stronger than the 6
Long as the going not to tight just whack smaller sprocket on back - can afford to with all that torque eh - mine a rocket ship still with
38 tooth sprocket on motard set up

the back firing has almost gone but I think I might need to look at the needle now to get it perfect so some more tweeking to be done
I lifted the needle up some more the other day and the Back firing got worse and you could see the black fumes comming out out the exhaust so I think It was too rich
put the needle back to what it was and the black smoke out the exhaust has stopped
the black fumes happened when you blipped the throttle.

It might be interesting to XR650R owners and interested forumista, that both our XR's accomplished the ride from Chch to Hanmer, yesterday, on 7.3L of premium, each. :first:
The odo was 150Km, so this equates to 20.5 Km per litre !....enough for 200Km on a standard tank....:niceone:
We were both trying hard to out-economise each other too, but the outcomes were identical.

Was impressed with how the pig pulled me across rivers with good flow and reasonable depth carrying a 38 rear sprocket - rode the clutch a tad not to risk stalling, having not done many river crossing prior found it was a hard-case feeling of the rear spinning up clearing loose gravel then biting on a more solid base ... relief to when it did bite and moved forward :D

Ordering a new dipstick from Casbolts Ch-Ch when first got the pig was enough to avoid dealers when possible - $50 when could of had two delivered from the states for the same $.
If ya not used this crowd before they seem the go www.mrcycles.com - they quote for each shipment to NZ - not cookie cutter shipping prices. Was reasonable shipping when inquired while ago.
Get 90% of my parts off flebay - Lyttle racing in Arizona one crowd - seem to have more xr650r parts on hand than any honda dealer in NZ and at least half the price - USA$3 shipping for each additional item.
Martin - If that crowd on flebay a top seller - wouldn't they most probably bend over backwards to see you right ?

Nice photo's Deano,
I've recently sold my BRP and bought...........another one!
The old girl was getting a bit tired (50,000km) and I saw this other sweet one in Rangiora that had only done 9000km and had supposedly never been offroad before (which I believe to be the case as it was pretty imaculate, no chips under mudguards etc) so I bought it. I kept the big tank, headlight, oversized brake disc, braided brake line, upgraded stator etc etc (all the good bits) from the old bike and fitted them on the new..price difference was only $1000 so happy days!
As a treat I've purchased a Trailtech vapor speedo which is due to arrive ex USA tomorrow, anyone seen one or fitted one to an XR?
I'm sure it shouldn't be to difficult to fit, apparently most people connect it to the headlight power wire so the screen stays illuminated at all times while the engine is running so degating the need to rely on the watch battery backup.
The main reason for the vapor is it will make it a lot easier to quickly change bike over to supermoto mode without having to piss around with small bike speedo.
I'll keep you posted on the fitting...

"Good skills with the upgrade Matt"
The headlight on NZ models is AC, there is a DC supply coming out of the rectifier - think its the black wire, Thread on adv about it with lots of guys saying the headlight is DC and one lone ranger saying headlight is in AC. Maybe a difference with USA models.

Why a later year one when they're all the same bike? Mine's early but the guy i got it from fully rebuilt everything, motor, running gear, the lot.
I've seen them advertised cheaper than what i paid, and later model. But i'm confident in my machine and the condition it's in (note, the confidence doesn't extend to my off road riding talent however)
My point is, why not look for one that's been looked after, or seen little use?
