BMW GS (once again awsome bike - sadly owned by most uncool teachers/librarians/geeks/engineers....uncool people)
Britten (before you burn me think about this - when was the last time you saw a world class weightlifter wearing pink and blue? The britten is like NASA - only cool if your uncool)......i love it, i love geeky stuff, i have a big calculator.

dosnt matter how much you say before you burn me! its gonna happen:laugh:, guaranteed. thats what made the britten so cool, it had the ugliest colour scheme that looked like a liberachy/wacko jackson joint effort but the engineering on those machines just made you drool, I still go to the cafe at te papa just so i can sit there and ogle that bike, add to that that it could eat ducatis, diguest them and then crap them out as over priced paper weights and the britten has to feature in the top 5 of any cool list

You need to try the rolls griffon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolls-Royce_Griffon) - 36l as opposed to the 27l of the Merlin. Even betterer :niceone: There was a nice one in a MIX Spitty puring around the Wanaka air show till some "Wallice" dumped it on its lid (crank rotates the other direction to the Merlin so you need to correct the torque the otherway on takeoff - doh). Pitty

The SR to me is one the dumbest ugliest bikes I have ever seen - next to the FT500 that is... However they have an absolutely huge following overseas. As Woodman said before 'one mans mona lisa is another mans fat smiling tart' or somting like dat.....

Er - the KTM was being compared to a CBX.

As far as the SR500 is concerned, you have to put it in context.
Pommy singles had long gone. and Yamaha were the first Jap maker to resurrect (copy, actually), the concept.

Sorry Padmei but I'm going to have to stick up for the Honda FT500 & FT400 Ascot series.
Heaps were sold in NZ in the early 1980's so they were quite popular for a while. I admit though you don't see many still on the road & their styling is an '"aquired taste". One reason for their demise is that (because of their electric start) their engines were popular for off road karts.
Basically it's an XR500 motor with chassis & trim styled to look something like the flat track bikes of that era. But they weren't a success, even though in the States there is heaps of aftermarket stuff to wake them up & they even raced them.
Yes, I'v owned both models, they were fun to ride & surprisingly good gravel bikes.
Pic is my 500, nice & clean before selling it in 2003.

Low front guard is better for speed and stability. The blunt front end comes from the height, standing on the pegs but still wanting wind protection, plus framing the 3 or 4 nav instruments. The middling bash plate on my bike cops a hammering, the racers go bigger for more protection and storage. The exhaust has minimal bends for maximum flow and there's probably an element of cooling involved ie not heating up the rest of the bike. And if you drop it on its side - you're fooking fooked so who cares about the bike!! :doctor:

It's all function over form, but sexy enough within the functional boundaries.

While I'm being uncharacteristically grumpy, whereas that thing is cool, it didn't start squat.

Modern Adventure and Dual Purpose bikes have their roots in the ISDT/ISDE and Scottish Six Day Trials bikes of yesteryear.

If it was a UJM with a full fairing, the radiator would be in the same spot. It just looks out and exposed without the full fairing, and the V means the crank is a bit further back perhaps.

On any other LC8 it's the battery box.

Mind you, on a KTM that's an expensive part too...

Pukemanu ride was an adventure ride that started at the Pukemanu* pub in Martinborough - was intended to be one of a series - Capital Coast, The Horowhenua Ride and the Pukemanu Ride.

They sorta ran out of organisational steam somewhere along the way, only the Capital Coast remains.

*Pukemanu was the name of a TV series set in a fictional timber mill town shortly after TV2 started up, IIRC they used the martinboro pub as one of the sets and it ended up being named for the show

Suzuki launch RMX450Z Enduro racer aimed at 2010 Dakar Rally

KTM's loss is Suzuki's gain? We'll find out next year...

With KTM having been pushed out of the Dakar Rally, it seems Suzuki have now set their sights on winning the legendary desert race in 2010. The company has announced the launch of its new enduro racer, the all-new RMX450Z, which is based on the RM-Z450 motocross machine. The RMX450Z features the same fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 450cc engine and electric-start has also been added to the package.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2225&pictureid=27986

The Suzuki RMX, which has specifically been developed for enduro races, features suitably optimised suspension, a lighting kit, digital instrumentation and an enduro-friendly 18-inch rear wheel. The bike will be available in Suzuki dealerships later this year though prices are yet to be announced. We’re guessing Suzuki will be going all out to capture Dakar glory in 2010 though we’ll still miss KTM…

KTM quits Dakar Rally
This morning the Dakar Rally announced it would limit all motorcycles to 450cc. KTM races 654cc motorcycles. So it's quitting. Full details below.

"Rally Dakar" - KTM withdraws!
The limiting of motorcycles with a displacement of 450 cc forces the long term dominator of the Dakar Rally to withdraw.

Following the announcement at a press conference on June 4, 2009 of the French "ASO" - the organisers of the "South American Dakar" that from 2010, only motorcycles with a maximum displacement of 450 cc will be permitted to compete, KTM, after eight consecutive victories, has decided to immediately accept the consequences and announces its withdrawal from the "Dakar".

The company will no longer be represented at the rally in South America either with an official factory team or a KTM-supported team. At the same time, KTM underlines that the company remains committed to rally sport and will now concentrate its efforts on the world championship and other important rallies.

The organiser's short term change to the rules, designed to end the dominance of KTM, and which comes without any advance warning, hits the KTM factory hard. Today, just six months before the start - and at a time when not only the factory team but also dozens of private teams are deep in preparations for this extremely complex rally, the immediate withdrawal of the worldwide market leader of offroad sports motorcycle is the only possible consequence.

"Every sport regulation needs changes and adjustments to new developments to retain an interest in it, but this also require the appropriate lead times. We have the entire material for the 690 Rally motorcycles for our factory team as well as that for 50 customers' motorcycles in our storage facility ready to be constructed in June. Riders' contracts have been finalised and all the team members have been engaged. The financial consequences that results from this decision are enormous. Quite apart from this, we are shocked by the organiser's lack of loyalty, above all because of the huge efforts we made following the cancellation of the Dakar in 2008 by contributing to the new edition - even during a period of extreme economic crisis," said KTM Motor Sport Advisor and "Rally Legend" Heinz Kinigadner in a first statement.

Following the decision for the deployment of 450cc motorcycles, which are unthinkably unsuitable for use in long distance rallies, KTM can no longer economically justify a commitment to be engaged in the Dakar in the future. KTM Motor Sport Director Winfried Kerschhaggl: "Rally sport serves to prove the efficiency and stability of our large volume series single cylinder. There is no question that we will remain active in rally sport! Having said that, for KTM, the rally in South America is now history. We will now fully concentrate on the Rally World Championship and we will seek out alternatives. Maybe we will soon again see full KTM Rally engagement on African soil - back to the roots!"

With its commitment to rally sports, KTM naturally takes the obligations to its long term worldwide customers seriously because it is they who have decided to put their trust in the products and in the unique service of the Austrian company for rally sport by choosing KTM motorcycles.

This is a 2000 model and in my mind the best colour model KTM made....
It is my old bike, pre NZKTM, why oh why did I sell it....:shit:
Tell you something, I would like to buy it back off him when the time comes, but me thinks it will be a stayer.....CrazyFrog is relishing it down there, when he has the time away from Daddy duties...:)
The model came with a nice roadbook speedo computer and it did look hot, agree.

I would hasten to say that there are maybe 4 or 5 bikes at the most from the pre 2003 vintage and I know where three of them are...
I think there may be a 2002 same as mine around, but as for the 2000 above, I don't know.
