Any IT is sub zero imho, i had the 175j version, the first with the non triangular swingarm. Can,t remeber how many times the frame broke or how many hare scrambles were finished with less than 6 gears, but every time I see one my eyes go misty.:cold::cold:

It is real, think it was built for that crazy beach race in france. Seen the video of the start which is a looooong beach and the thing just blows everyone away. I think the key to winning the race is not get caught in the sand dunes so a fast bike off the start is a good advantage.

IMHO You can learn on a heavy bike ... I started on F650Dakar around two years ago or less and I'm reasonable happy with how much I learned (not much some can say but I was definitely worst) ...
...but it would have been easier on a lighter bike (clearly as long as u try to learn good riding technics).

There was a guy at the Cambridge - Hamilton toy run with one, he had imported it himself. Apparently they failed the Australian ADR process for some reason and that held up the NZ release but he couldn't wait.
He had done a few thousand km on it and was very happy with it. Had done the South Island Safari, I think the DB1K and a few other things. I think it looked better in the flesh than it does on paper, I didn't like the media photo's.

Apparently Yamaha withdrew in 1994 because of a disagreement with the rules.
Peterhansel didn't compete as a result.
I think also that the stage was cancelled after the bikes got through. The trucks couldn't make it and the decision was made to cancel the stage
Cagiva took 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th place....There was a lone Katoom there though...:done:

A bike that always gets my heart beating fasterHad one of those, neat road bike. Of all the 900cc bike/engine variants, the Tiger made more power than all the others to 6000+rpm. The first one to catch it (on the dyno) was the Cosworth-special Daytona Super III. Torque curve shaped like a house. High-quality fully adjustable rear shock, the best of any Triumph of the era.
Another 'biege' the first model year was available in 'sandstorm', a colour they never used again.

Yes the CT & all other bikes that get noobs out riding get the automatic cool rating.
But... no amount of hinting, cajoling or moaning will get a bike into the cool category. The DRs & KLRs are not being rated in this thread as it will turn into the usual grudge match.

It had a really weird engine. Part of the stroke supercharging the other part/scavanging/black magic/or something.
Found it...
Harnessing pre-ignition to good effect.
"When the dust settled, the EXP-2 had earned 5th overall and 1st in both the under 500cc and Experimental classes at the (2003?) Granda-Dakar rally; 1st in the two-stroke class and 8th overall in the Nevada Rally last year (2002), and 7th overall motorcycle at the Baja 1000."

That thing is not the successor, it's not even a PD bike.
Like the orange equivalent, it's a toy - it lacks the weather protection, range and carrying ability to be either a PD or an Adventure bike.
Notwithstanding that, it was only King of it's small class until the 950SE came out.

Jeez sorry about the long url. How do you change the name to something cool like "cool bike" but still retain the url?Type words to appear on page, then select them, then click the Insert Link button, paste in url. The words become the visible part of the link.
Pet hate: link text being the url. Adventure/Dual Purpose Bikes (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=67) is so much more useful than http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=67, and faster as the former was drag'n'drop whereas the latter required quite a few clicks.
With Firefox, you can single-click drag and drop hyperlinks [edit: and images!] without even selecting them, so you don't even have to cut'n'paste the text and the url anymore. And of course, while dragging you can hover on the tabs to change the active tab, just like hovering on an app on the taskbar to switch apps. So you can bring links from other windows in. Dunno if IE does this, it doesn't let you drag tabbed windows from one IE application to another, like FF does.
The first result googling 'cool dakar bike' images (http://www.google.co.nz/images?hl=en-GB&q=cool+dakar+bike&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B5GGGL_enNZ299NZ302&ie=UTF-8):

Had a similar experience on greymouth beach, kept gearing down cos I thought i was in deep sand, eventually realised after the bike came to a halt that the sand was hardpacked and the reason for slowing was the engine seizing through lack of oil.:bash:
