This is a very nice bike...what year, model are these.
Hey Joe, Woohoo, you put me on the Wall of Coolness. You rock.:Punk:
Mine is a year 2000, 640 Adventure with standard LC4 motor, not the newer model hi-flow head LC4 model like Warewolf's. I love it, vibrations and all.
It's pretty standard apart from the Magura hydraulic clutch fitted by first owner, and is now sporting an orange 525EXC front guard, the blue guard died on the rocks up Mt Altimarloch on the Dusty Butt '09. Something else died 850km into the same ride, but I'll try not to mention that.... it's all good again now and we're getting out amongst it again regularly.
Might see ya on my way North sometime, or when you lot come south again.

I would hasten to say that there are maybe 4 or 5 bikes at the most from the pre 2003 vintage and I know where three of them are...My year - 2005 - was the first year KTM NZ imported more than 1, and that was only 2!! So we are only talking 10 bikes 1997-2005. There are more '06s, I thought 2x hire bikes from Papakura and a couple more to private owners, not sure; but by any measure NZ-new 640A's are a pretty rare thing. There are also a few used imports about.
The '03 with high flow head, high front guard, single front disc, output shaft roller bearing model is considered the pinnacle of development as the later low guard twin disc front end is not so dirt-worthy. However the 50mm Extreme fork on the '00 model is considered the best-handling front end.

they got a neat shape up top, with twin headlights and sort of a half fairing, down the sides.

The 640's are only 625cc and share the same engine so don't be fooled by the badges. And the 660 is only 654cc same as the new 690.
One Oscar missed, LC4 640 SM Prestige, quite tasty. Definitely cosmetic changes but maybe some hard parts, too.
There are RXC variants but perhaps not strictly in the "640" line, being 400 and earlier 620 (609cc). Pretty sure I test rode an LC4 400 RXC (enduro) and that thing definitely was a paint shaker. Blurry vision at 110km/h on the motorway (smoothed out by 130), chattered your teeth together at certain revs. My 640 is Rolls-Royce smooth in comparison; that LC4-4 was infinitely worse.
Here's the Wikipedia page: 8 KTM Model History (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KTM#KTM_Model_History). Note that "EGS" is the internal/VIN model code for LC4 (or many thereof) so listing it separately is perhaps redundant.

Being serious, this is what I would like in my garage to keep KT and DR company. Just the thing to "zip" down to the coffee shop on two up. Saw these all in Bali last week.
As you can see the first is for sale, he wanted 12,000,000 Rupiah (approx $2000.00), if I had known more about buying bikes from overseas, costs of shipping it home and the rules on registering them here I would have been very tempted.
Second pic are three Vespa's that were available for hire.
(If you know of anyone with an older Vespa for sale please let me know).

Certainly rode lots of dirt roads on it, 4wd tracks etc, all on the street tyres. That was still during the time (my time?) when adventure was all about riding road bikes on the dirt.

Yeah but even though i owned a TRX and it was nice enough to ride
theres no way you could class it as a COOL bike.
Cool should conjure up images of something that stands out from the ordinary dross,
something a little different that others might respect or admire.
Nobbly tyres on a road bike and a TDM are seriously not "cool".
Mr Clarkson would be pissing himelf if he thought this lot were the best
that bikers could aspire to.

Nobbly tyres on a road bike and a TDM are seriously not "cool".Sure a TDM is cool: as you say, it stands out from the ordinary dross, something a little bit different. Almost unclassifiable. "New Sports" they called it, a streetified Super Ten. Was there anything similar before? The Versys & Vee Strom are contemporary copies, perhaps the Tiger is too.
Park one up in just about any line up of bikes and it'd be the one ppl went to, looked at and asked questions about. That's gotta be some kind of cool. It's the one cops made an effort to pull over so they could have a closer look (that was uncool).

Nowadays, a motorcycle sidecar might not arouse the same ecstasy as it used to bikes in early days but the latest vehicle by Francois Knorreck is a sidecar with difference that gives an entirely new definition to the sidecars.
Dubbed “Snaefell,” the 1000cc Laverda motorcycle has three exhausts and its sidecar offers a luxury ride in comparison to regular sidecars.
The designer has employed different parts of a Kawasaki 1000RX and a number of cars to accomplish the motorcycle sidecar, which took 10 years and nearly 15,000 Euros to combine biking and luxury car ride in a single vehicle.

The TTR's were nice standard, but the XT600 motor in them is just too gutless for a motard. Ok as the original dirt bike, with Ohlins shock etc, they handled well , performed as well as a XR650. Kick start only though.

Wicked riding shots from a cool bike..
Quote: From the brother of the rider...
"Well, things didn't exactly go to plan with a few mechanical issues causing him to drop from 18th outright and 5th in class on day 3 to the back of the field, then with a few top 15 outright finishes and sitting in 35th, a dodgy waterpump seal made any plans of a respectable finishing place a distant memory, however in the last few days of the rally he got a personel best finish of 11th outright and 2nd in class in one of the longest special tests just short of 200 miles finishing the Safari outright in 38th. Not too bad for someones first ever Safari.
It was a great introduction to sarari style racing and we have big plans to go over next year and battle it out for a (hopefully) top 10 outright finish"

OK bro please post up a bike you think should be up here.
Remember the wall is a continuum - doesn't have to be cool - can be very uncool - funny thing is there's bound to be someone whose had one & loved it

Hard for them to angle the screen back any more as it would get caught under your helmet and there wouldn't be room for the navigation equipment.

Dumb question though....when did adventure/dual purpose become Dakar/Safari?
The COOL ADV bikes have always looked like Dakar/Safari/Rally Raid bikes, From the humble r80gs to the Yamaha Tenere, Honda Africa twin, DR Big, KTM 640/95xAdv just to name a few.
You can use any make/model as an adv bike but theres a very good reason "we" covet these Dakar derrived bikes - They are the best bikes for what we do as delivered from the factory:shit:. But most importantly they look cool!!!!!!:Punk:

Dumb question though....when did adventure/dual purpose become Dakar/Safari?Probably .2 seconds after testosterone was invented, which pre-dates the invention of both fire and the wheel. Bet those bikes looked funny!!
The COOL ADV bikes have always looked like Dakar/Safari/Rally Raid bikes, From the humble r80gs to the Yamaha Tenere, Honda Africa twin, DR Big, KTM 640/95xAdv just to name a few.Too right! Add to that list the TDM (back a few pages), the Cagiva Elefant (back some more - and the first dual-purpose bike I lusted after), or as late as the mid-nineties when these things first came out:

All are production dual-purpose/adventure bikes, albeit based on rallye bikes - some more closely than others.

I didn't ask. He did say that it wasn't going at the time, but he has since sorted it. He reckons he can start it by hand now. That would not be my cup of tea. The tank has a couple of dents, but the overall patina of the bike is nice.

Saw this at the Woodhill forest trail ride today. The guy had recently bought it off trade me. I've always liked these. One of my AKL mates has one. He's built up an NZ Yamaha/factory race replica from a std bike. He has a tin tank in pristine condition which will never see Woodhill: only the ordinary plastic tank is risked out there. Puts out some serious HP for its age. One of only a handful of bikes to get up a particularly nasty steep deep/loose sandy climb that requires a) hp over weight, and b) rider skill (very little run up so it's extremely difficult to hit with much speed).
Very nice looking/going resto job.

Yeah crazy aye.
Nordie is refering to Des Malloy from "The Last Hurrah" an old fella with a shed full of real old bikes & cars in Golden Bay has one of these he's doing up. Seemed really out of place at first however when you look at his other bikes they are other great designs. Guess it doesn't matter what age a cool bike is a cool bike.

Yeah, but just imagine the hurdles the guy had to jump to make that thing work. I think it's cool because of the complexity. With the materials available at the time, he's even whackier than John Britten.

Radial motor in a bike. Thats kinda cool cause of the techy factor. Lotsa torques.
Not so sure about the modern take on it though. Bet this thing takes a bit of keeping upright. Might explain the width of the rear tyre.
