I've given advice (to both men and women) and received a lot more than I have given over the years. I am guilty of giving advice to women (and come to think of it men too - with no distinction) when not really asked for, but always in a polite and friendly way and with the best of intentions. Although I completely see where you are coming from when you feel offended that people at work were telling you how to operate this 22 tonne digger having done the job for 5 years.

If a particular woman took my fancy for example, I'd use charm and not my unparalleled skill on two wheels to show her I cared. That's just silly, and definitely not the way I'd do it.

I suppose coming to really think of it now, its more of a sub-conscious thing with me anyway just because I work in the financial advisory industry, and it's part of what I do for 9 hours a day. Good point though, sometimes we let our sub-conscious merge with our conscious selves and one really needs to think about it to realise that it can be offending.

speaking of tips, did you hear what the leper said to the prostitute? "Oh, you can keep the tip"

thats my contribution. I work in an area where the women are at least as clever and motivated as the men.

Thanks also for the wonderful example to geestring of how males also recieve useless unsolicited advice from other males.

Well someone has to do it sixpack. Child obesitiy is a big problem these days and either you're part of the solution or you're - o..h.. weight, I better not go there.

That’s when you step up and kick arse I hope? Or at least match them in skill – because if you don’t and you are just average (or below), then you actually justify men’s attitudes towards girls who play in their sand pit.
Now, ain't that the rub. How many of the men in their field are "average (or below)" but still feel that a woman on the same level as them justifies their looking down on them? If a man and woman both do an average (or below) - to keep the quote intact - there is no way a male should still feel he's superior. It pisses me off that if a woman wants to do a "male's job" then she has to do it 100 times better, just to earn the same level of respect they'd give a useless male colleague. Maybe that's not what you mean to imply but chauvinism is alive and well when men can't handle a woman showing them up in an area they're supposed to monopolise.

C'mon PB, you don't have to earn anyones' respect. Don't struggle - just be yourself.

Thanks for your concern Steve, but I wasn't actually talking about myself, rather than commenting on an attitude. I'm happy being me!

This thread is such a crock of sensationalised feminist bullshit. Any woman in a traditionally male dominated profession has already obtained a big fat slice of equality therein. The fact she has that job should be enough motivation for her to get on with it without the whinging. That's what men have been doing since the dawn of time. As far as having to work twice as hard to get same recognition as thier male counterparts... that's life. That's human nature. Consider yourself pioneers and be proud of "working twice as hard" and what you're achieving for our daughters. In the past 3 1/2 years of being a "Stay-at-home-Dad", I've had to work twice as hard as other mothers to fit in at Playcenter, coffee groups, Daycare, even to make friends with other mothers so my daughter has friends of her own! I've had litterally EVERY mother I've met give me some kind of advice (most of which was common sense but I gratefully accepted it anyway), and not once have I complained. It's been a challenge, but I love every second of it, and wouldn't trade it for the world. I hope what I've done has helped atleast a little to pave the way for more fathers to spend some of each of thier kids childhood at home raising them full-time. Our daughter by the way... you'll never catch her bitching about men giving her advice. I'm teaching her to listen to all the advice anyone gives her, then practice only of it that she deems wise to.
