    Thumbs up Ktm vs others

    Well im back after being on holiday for not paying gst and am looking at buying a new bike need some advice as keen to buy a ktm 250 4 stroker
    what are the parts like to buy?
    how reliable are these as there seems to be shit loads out there on the tracks now.
    have been offerd a 2003 model from a mate its had a total rebuild in the motor

    Good luck with a KTM lol! Compared to Yamaha KTM parts are double the price, also there was a KTM overheating post sometime ago and hydraulic clutch problems.... But at the end of the day most bikes have the same parts on them regardless to the brand so comes down to rider choice.... or colour

    Just make sure it doesn't smoke or use water.

    The only thing part that seems to be more expensive for a KTM over jap bikes is brake pads. And they are brembo and you dont have to by them altho they are great haha. Its a myth that ktm bits are more... Ya pay for what you get usualy

    Disagree, my brother has a KTM 250 4 stroke and i have a Yamaha. We normally change things at the same time like fork seal etc. His genuine ones were $25 more then my Genuine ones and same with other parts that we have changed.

    I guess if you stayed away from Genuine then they might be the same price, but im not sure.

    Find a parts department that dont mind going the extra distance. Get them to find an aftermarket fork seal, then cross reference it to a Suzuki model.

    You will get genuine Suzuki ones cheaper, and they are FAR better than the aftermarket critters. I learnt this when I owned my FZR750, and fitted SV650 seals which never blew again.

    Very true, i always carry spare Yamaha brake levers and clutch levers, you will be surprised how many different makes they fit..... we used them on a Honda and a Kawasaki and said was only listed for Yamaha haha!

    cheers so would it a drama having a ktm? just seems to be more and more of them around these days and the ones i have seen at trail rides dont seem to have problems from what i have seen.

    We have had 4 KTM's about to be five and we have had not one problem with them other than one freak problem which ktm coverd under warrenty. The hydrolic clutch is really good and self adjusts so it doesnt burn out so easy. WR's are pretty bullet proof too it seems to be a Yamaha thing to have leaky fork seals but thats about it. The WR is probly more trail rider friendly where the KTM is more race ready.

    When was the last time you pulled down a motor or opened up a set of forks or took out wheel bearings and seals and found Suzuki, Yamaha or Kawasaki or KTM written on them- you guys read too many magazines and product brochures. Just go to Saeco and pay 1/4 price for the same bearings and stop woffling


    Motorcycle manufacturers do not make bearings and seals.

    i agree all the bearings and seals are usually made by the same couple of companies and then sold on the the different codes who put thier markup on them and then sold on to the bike shops who then put their own markup on them also (in some cases). things like OEM levers, kickstarts, and other bolt on parts ive found have been almost the same price as the jappa stuff. just recently i changed a piston in my ktm 300 and all up the whole kit cost me $365 that in cluded piston, rings,pin,bearing,an assortment of base gaskets, power valve seals, head gaskets, exhaust gaskets, powervalve cover gaskets and some other gaskets i didnt need and it was all factory KTM stuff. ive had no major problems with my KTM, in fact two of the people i ride with have recently changed to KTM and they love them.

    I just love my Big KTM!

    3rd set of sprockets, 4th chain, second set of discs.
    second set of grips. 9 or 10 rear tyres. second set of wheel bearings front and rear -more brake pads than I can think of...
    and not a single mechanical problem yet!

    I havent even touched the valve clearances - getting near 500 hours now...
    Retired- just some guy with a few bikes......

    cheers if i needed parts i will just pay the cost of genuine just to save problems esp for the motor levers etc not to worried but my main thing is ktm a good bike as will just be used on trial rides or should i stay with honda

    Very ture what you a saying only one problem i have coma across is that KTM do tend to stick in some odd ball bearings which isnt saying the others dont but they do use more of the more common ones. The odd ball ones you will find very hard to get aftermarket as they get them made specifically for them selfs and your local bearing dealer wont have or be able to get.
    As for the other stuff there is less aftermarket stuff around for ktm in general in NZ at least for now.
