    The Bird and being special

Today I got to experience what many in bigger cities have experienced.

Today I saw something I had only ever read about and couldn't quite believe.

Today some male in his people mover got grumpy at me and flicked me the bird as I travelled past him.

I rather think he would have preferred to be on the bike, than in the people mover with the wife and kids, towing his pop-up trailer.

I think he wanted to feel the freedom of riding one's bike along various highways and byways.

I think he hadn't had sex for a while.

What ever his reasons I was shocked at his appalling behaviour and in front of his children. A terrible example to the next generation he has bred.

As I'm travelling along a country road with a speed limit of 100k's I come up behind a line of three cars and we're all now travelling at 50k. Thankfully I'm on my motorbike and being Nelson roads the two vehicles in front of me pull over to the side so I'm able to ride past without crossing the double yellow lines. All legal and travelling at about 80k. I come up behind family-man-on-holiday and I think hmm, yellow lines finishing, no on-coming traffic...wait, wait...go. accelerate past, come up to his window and this hand comes out with this finger sticking up!!!! Really, WTF, he holds up traffic and then gets irate because he is overtaken.

Me, being me, I smile, wave and yell out "have a nice day".

Now one would think this would be the end of it....but no. Two K's down the road and I'm at the lights and here he is on my right, and starts abusing me!

Fuck, this is gettting scarey, I'm only little, he's in this big people mover and he's angry at me. He starts his rant about do I think I'm special and do I have my own rules for the road. Hmmm, maybe I do, I'm on a motorcycle and there are certain things a motorbike can do that a car can't. I replied, yes I am special, smiled nicely and told him to have a nice day, lights changed and I could ride off. At this stage I'm freaking a bit more as he starts to come over to my lane, right, this is Richmond not Auckland....wtf is this man on. Meanwhile wife is staring straight ahead and the kids have their noses stuck to the windows, all looking down on me. Thank god for throttle....got away from him.

    Breathed a sigh of relief.

Too quick, the bastard's back, sitting on my arse at 70k and I'm like, stay cool girl. Turn-off ahead....go faster, turn and ..... he goes the other way, flicking the bird again....me I wave.

Really, what was the point of his aggression? What has he acheived? Me, I played it over in my mind as to whether I rode in a dangerous manner and all I get is.....what a wanker!@*&^%

Heh I get the jitters when anyone flicks the finger, but a man and his kids, that sux... next time that happens, find somewhere to stop where he can't, and ring *555 tell them you just noticed a car & trailer, kids not belted in and man hitting his wife while driving... that will stuff his day up~!!

It's not just a big city thing, I get it all the time from people who decide they're a better judge of where I can overtake than I am.

Even when I'm driving my terrano

Just be happy in the knowledge that while you were out enjoying yourself and he was stuck driving a domestic dray, he got himself so wound up that he was probably still pissed off when you were chilling out starting on your second drink.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

What a brilliant idea....I did think of trying to remember his plate...but really, I just wanted him to have a nice day. What's the point of getting shitty???

Just getting even...not shitty because basically your saving those kids from a father that 1. Can't concentrate while driving, 2. Behaving badly in front of kids. 3. More than likely tail gating et etc

Often being nice can be patronizing, and those that can get shitty over nothing are the worst ones to acknowledge, best to pretend you didn't see it.. him!

nah, I meant what was the point of him getting shitty.

His behaviour was apalling...like I said, the poor wife and children.

You poor thing. I haven't been on the receiving end of abuse too often, but I hate it when cars get driven right up ya squeeker 'cause you're never quite sure whether it's deliberate intimidation or they're off in lala land.

Must admit that although since riding I've really tried to curb my penchant for wanting to retaliate, my best line is to pick the moment to pass not even giving them a sideways glance (they're beneath my dignity to look at), then leave them stuck in a queue and hope like hell that whatever direction I choose to go in they won't follow.

It has crossed my mind to get in front then wave my bum in the air at them (which I occasionally do when I get numb-bum anyway), but always worry that that would be the one time I'd screw up and end up plastered on the road in front of them to run me over...
I lahk to moove eet moove eet...

I get this all the time, I think having a very loud exhaust doesn't help, as I think it freaks cage drivers out when I pass them ( I know it has freaked me out when a loud bike has whizzed past me! )

Worst one I got was when I rode past a mum pushing her baby in a pram on the footpath, I was accelerating hard and I guess she thought I'd wake the baby or something, I looked in my mirror and saw her shaking her fist at my and giving me the finger with the other hand and could see her mouthing all sorts of swear words at me, lol. Also passed a couple of hogs on the motorway doing about 180, got the same response you got!
