No that was just part of the normal route after Lawrence, quite a bit before getting near the Serpentine I think.

After seeing a WR250 and Jezza on his sewing machine being pushed up there I'm doubly glad I didn't attempt that on the 950.

found the perfect bike for next year, lower than the XR, better luggage carrying, double side stands (wont matter which way the hill slopes) http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-350412784.htm

Everybody in that vid too the short cut between a zig and a zag. If they had done the full zig (or is it a zag) then would have been fine - just like the rest of the hill climb. That was the worst bit of the zig zag route.

Yes well, even though I knew there was a bit like that I didn't realise that was it and when I was approaching the fork in the track and glanced at the gps it kinda looked like we should turn up... purple line straight through the intersection going up
It was a bit hard to tell that the other option also took us up the hill in another 45meters further on, that and seeing the man in front already on his way up it

    Track log pic attached.

It all just added to the experience and helped create stories to tell.

Yeah, I was wondering why they chose that shortcut ....the zigs and zags were challenging enough for us.
Entertaining to watch the footage though

i thought i would be clever since i got up it last time - front wheel hit a rock and i went down - then had my 40 min cardio for the day. not sure which way the ones ahead of me went but sam followed me up

told a few other people the otherway was easier when i rolled back down but they all wanted to do the hard way

So you're one of the people who made it through all rivers without having to get wet feet?
    Does sound about right though.
Of course theory is all well and good but sometimes just ends up with a bigger splash as you go down.
Tried, tested, proven to still make a splash

Agree with that 100% and use this technique on nearly all river crossings. I blasted over this crossing and all the others 5 weeks prior with no probs at all, but in this case I was one of the ones that went down when the front wheel was immediately taken out by two large slippery rocks one after the other. For deep crossings that are predominately large slippery rocks I find being seated using your legs as support gives more control and is far more successful. Although not as much fun as standing up on the pegs and blasting across, it saves potentially falling off and getting an airbox full of water with the bollocks associated of resuscitating your bike.

Even the best of riders will get caught out by a hidden rock, rut or what have you, the best thing that can be done is to learn from it to improve your riding techniques for the next ride. I learnt a very valuable lesson in this situation, go down in a river in front of 25 other riders and a video camera and you'll be pummelled with smart arse comments for weeks
