This one certainly does Float my Boat:

    http://www.waimakclassiccars.co.nz/c...r-XJ8-LWB.html

To the degree that I am actually discussing looking at it with the wife

I know it's already been listed on this thread, but it really is an excellent motor car indeed

Bastard. If you buy it, can I have visitation rights...?

I've been agonising over that one for months. I don't have the cash, and haven't been able to convince the wife. I've also heard some horror stories about the reliability of those V8s.

It's a pristine example though - not immaculate, but pretty nice. The leather in particular looks good and tight. It's a lot of car for the money - well priced.

LWB version too - a great wedding car (if you're so inclined).

Yes of course you can have visitation rights. I'll even pick you up from the airport

If it's the same engine as was in the 3.2 sport (which I think it is) it was very very good indeed when I had one as a company car in the early to mid 90s.

I am presuming that the 4.0 was in the later models, which may be a little larger than I would like.

I'm not holding my breath over this as the missus wants to move house. Once that has fallen through (which it will) I can show up with a nice consolation golden Jaguar

Nah, the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine was all new for the X308 model, available in 3.2, 4.0 and 4.0 supercharged versions. It spelt the end of the XJ6 and XJ12 models.

The biggest problem was the Nikasil-coated cylinder liners. Great for race cars, but prone to failure in longer-term usage. They were a brief (but sorry) problem.

The later X350 / X358 XJ (the first with the aluminium body) had the larger 3.5 and 4.2 V8s, along with a 3.0 V6 (the return of the XJ6).

    Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_AJ-V8_engine

In the UK, the Ford V6 (Essex) was quite a common cheap swap out (2.5l or 3.0l out of a Capri) until the 3.5 V8 later became the standard. From what I remember from a mate's Stag, the engine mountings were almost identical and didn't need much effort to install. The gearbox was another issue all together

The Essex was a decent wee unit. The Cologne 2.8 was a great unit too

The problem I have with the Jags, apart from being huge like a ship lol, is the fact that nearly all of the post 1970 ones are auto

PS Bikemad, afraid the pick ups have never done it for me, just not my cup of tea.

    It's an age thing Indy.

When you pull out of the suicide jockey thing and slow the pace a little with some more space (for a ship sized car) - you'll like Jags
