Admire your skill - ambitious project and you're doing fine - onya! S
Thanks Steve, ambitious project yes but in my former life as a mechanic in business in the 80s engine transplants where my thing I would put a V8 in anything and boy did some of those vehicles go well. To well for some people in the car club. My V8 Vauxhall Victor used to blow away some pretty serious competition and I drove it every day on the road.
Anyway back to the bike build for me the hard part of building the frame is done and it is running true. Now its just a matter of adding on the peripheral parts it will take time but basiclly it is being build from YZ450F and BMW parts even the front YZ guard fits without any modification misses the front of the engine by 15-20mm. If it rides good and handle OK then it will probably get one of the 1100 front screens and headlights I have lying around mounting points already installed. Checked up on road registering it the other day and thats not a problem either just through some more money at it but thats jumping the gun first thing first.

Bloody awesome Gsers. I really admire your abilities. If I won lotto & didn't have to work I would take an engineering course to learn how to do what you're doing.
I take it you're using a GS or YZ seat & adapting the frame to that. Are you only having a small tank? or is the gearbox one an auxiallary?
What's the intended purpose - a homebuilt HP2 enduro machine?

hey GSers This build really does require a thread of its own. To you it may be just something you do in your spare time however to many others interested it is a build worthy of an international audience.
I am interested in how you've done the swingarm pivot joint- whether you've used the existing one or made one up.
cheers

Not feeling completely convinced about letting this bike go. It is a good one and I have spent 5 years getting it so. When I sold my 1989 I soon regretted it and ended up getting this 1992 model, which was poised early on the slide of neglect and bodgery (that afflicts so many 2 valve twins) when I purchased it. Fortunately in time to arrest and repair the deterioration. Would be sad if it slid again.

why don't you ask the friendly guys at Team DS for some advise on what to do?

Thanks Padmei, I will do a write up on ADV once I get closer to the other end so that it will flow and people dont have to wait months for the next instalment. I have a lot booked marked and check them regularly and nothing seems to be happening. What starts off with a hiss and a roar ends up fading away and seems to stop Life has to carry on so this will take time.
I want if it all works out to plan to eventually use this as an adv bike. Lets face it they aren't really made for off road trails at 240 Kgs they require alot of concentration to keep them upright. I have done the 21" front wheel conversion on the 1100 and that made a huge difference to off road ability but the telelever suspension will only smooth out so many bumps maybe if I through a set of Ohlins at it it may help but $3000 ??????? I should be well on the road to finishing this for hopefully not to much more before going down the registration path.
Any way back to the build. I hope to use both the tank and seat ( with some more padding added) from the YZ If I can get the tank to sit where I want without having to modify it I will use it for petrol but I may have to cut the bottom out of it get it to sit right so it will then be there for show. It will give me more room to put electrics and airbox etc and maybe a battery on each side where the YZ radiators would normally be thats the plan anyway I think I am being conservative on the estamation on the size of the tank I can fit above the gearbox I have got over 300mm of width above the gearbox and tappers up from there If I remember correctly the width at the top of the frame at the back is around 170mm.
I might throw together a box out of ply that will fit and put a plastic bag in it and measure the volume.
As for the swingarm pivot point it was all made from scratch I spent many hours on the computer with pictures over-layed with lines and measurments to set it all up print it out and then stare at them for hours deciding where to start and how to go about it. Measure 50 times and cut once there is about 7 Mtrs of tube in there and only fillings left on the garage floor.

I've had someone from the other side of the world contact me re the brake adaptors. Someone had a spare one their mate didn't need - if anyone has one can they let me know so I can put this guy in touch with them.

Anyone used a motobatt batttery? Can I get away with a smaller battery on the GS? It starts pretty well & I live on a good hill if it doesn't.
I'm looking at the same thing so will be interested...
Couple of comments: the R80 calls for a 28 amp hour battery.. it starts and runs happily on the 12 amp hour KTM battery, the extra amp hours are only needed if it's hard to start (I think I am correct on this), I am looking at the Motobatt 20 amp size as it's $60 cheaper than the 28 amp.
Check it will physically fit the battery container and the leads will reach the terminals DAMHIK.
I would expect a good condition and well tuned engine to start on the first turn of the starter or kick, it should be no problem with a smaller battery.

I will be selling the adapter, brake & brake line shortly
UPDATE 08/11/2011 - sold.
IT'S JUST BETTER WHEN THERE'S TWINS INVOLVED..

I'm gonna research this a bit.
My bike starts pretty easily & isn't used as a commuter - only a Sunday avo bike so i don't need a lot of stop starting storage. I may even try my new MX type battery & see how that goes. A source has replied to me that motobatts can be installed on their side due to their unique manufacturing design which is interesting however I will double check on that. AGM or fibreglass mat batteries seem to be the way of the future.
I'm not worried about the length of leads as I will prob make some others up to suit.
I have had a look around & Antons site seems to provide the most specific advice. If you look right down the bottom he has some good calcs.
He seems to think 1amp/hr is all that is required for starting thereby once the alternator is up & running, charging the sytem you'll all good unless the draw from many appliances is greater than the output from the alternator. A 12A/H one is what he uses on his K75. Interesting.
