Im surprised you have time to look where you are going then

You would think people would learn by now? Maybe we need a sticky about this.
I use mainly my peripheral vision and feel to determine what side I am on if I don't have the time to look away. You sure know when you hit the cat's eyes and either move to one side of them, unless you feel like a bumpy ride.
Perhaps lane splitting be included in the restricted test.
However ... blood is sticky enough. And once you see blood (your own especially) .... You will remember.
I use my spidey senses ... and the little voices in my head. My mind reading skills fade pretty quickly though. But they do eat into the concentration needed to stay upright .... so it's not that bad.
If you laugh ... (I did once) ... but considering the number of times the voices told me (and I listened) and they were right .... I trust the voices.

That could make for an interesting test, imagine the chaos when they get knocked offYea lucky my leathers have always protected me from that, though seen a fair amount of other riders blood before. Not somewhere you want to be.
The voices in my head are usually David Gilmour or Roger Waters, and when the tell me to break down the wall, I would rather not listen to them.

As I said ... your own blood has more effect. And you can leak from places your leathers wont stop.
You're listening to the wrong voices. Perhaps the voices only come with age.

Yes well hopefully I don't have do watch the blood flow out of me from a bike accident, had it from stabbings before but that's kinda the last thing you think of.
How can they be the wrong voices? They are absolute legends! But no, I do know of this "voice" you speak of and it is something to be listened to, just like the intuition before you go for a ride that you should probably stay at home.
I guess when it all turns to shit you have to look at it from the car drivers side. Should car drivers expect to have bikes coming between them and the vehicle next to them? Probably not. Bike not in the mirror, check the other side, quick check over the shoulder and then move over. Bang. You know that is the risk, as do we all, but can you really blame the car driver? All these legalities over lane splitting are just loopholes due to the wording of the legislation.
Repeated for truth.
The one thing that is a stand-out in the whole debate has not yet been mentioned. Until now.
Ascertaining that the way is clear.
That little gem applies to every moment of vehicular movement, but particularly applies to any vehicle that is beginning a lane change OR overtaking manouevre.
We might well berate the 'ignorant cager' for moving into our path when splitting, but is it really the cager's fault? The gap between two lanes of cars (moving or stationary) is often not great and a bike can be well camouflaged in the sea of vehicles visible behind said cager. Couple that with a bike splitting at 'stupid' speeds (and I'd put that description at anything more than 15kph faster than the surrounding traffic) or splitting when the traffic is flowing at above 50kph...well, I'd lay the 'fault' in any crash squarely on the biker.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
True words.
We all know there's a first time for trying everything, even lane splitting on a motorway, but keen awareness (of the entire bubble around you - yes, including behind to be cognisant of other riders splitting behind you) is essential. It can be highly risky depending on multiple factors and quite honestly the OP should just be thankful she got off with minimal injury and cough up if insurance doesn't pay for her risk taking.
Sorry to sound blunt over that, but lane splitting is hardly "I didn't contribute to any part of the incident" material.
..Damn theres some preachy buggers on here!
"A motorcycle may overtake a vehicle on the right within the same lane if it is safe to do so. The traffic must be stationary or slow-moving and the way ahead must be clear. A motorcycle may overtake a vehicle on the left only if that vehicle is stationary or if it is turning right.
If high speed was involved, then the police would consider charges such as careless or even dangerous driving."
-Thats the law as it stands!
If you want to lane split...do it bloody carefully and slowly! (Not at mark 9!)
Personally...I lane split!...but only on roads I know well, and usually at 30kph past "stationary" traffic (or if its crawling along at less than 30kph...and even THAT is technically illegal!...naughty me lol)
Ride safe everyone![]()
