Honda dumped all the unpopular explosive MVX250s I remember seeing lines of them at Sawyers in wgtn whilst on the schoolbus. GBs were dumped here sort of a one time deal there were heaps, but not like they were imported for years, just a 'here's heaps try get rid of the things'. Couldn't move for them, same with Suzuki Impulses. RF900s were imported normally for like 17k & then they started dumping US & Euro ones of various spec14k, 13k, 12k, 11k. I knew someone who'd bought a full price one, not impressed. Especially as they are a pucey bike. Don't buy one.

Being singles the GBs eventually were revved crazy, run dry, died & were bought by wreckers for very little money & engines (which killed starter clutches) were picked over & the rest weighed in for scrap ally.

Cheap & cheerful fun, but disposable. A classic? Nah, no more than a Kawasaki Zephyr & nobody remembers them.

I admire your 'save now before buy' policy, lived that way my life. You just have to be careful of too many projects while you are young & poor.
I'm constantly amazed at some people's definition of a "classic".
I just got through arguing with a mate about the two DT400D's on TM.
They were a horrible POS when they were new and nothing's changed.
Just because it's old, don't make it special (otherwise I'd be special).

One with an XR lump would do the job okay, enough poke for a few wheelies
That's funny, because they wheelie incredibly well stock standard and half fucked.

I was very close to looping one for not expecting it to come up so quickly and easily.

I bought one brand new in 1988. Paid full price of $4299 for it from Sawyer Honda. It was the cool one too. single seat and fairing that they called the "Mark 2" or something.

I liked it. Good handling on a smooth road and sprung and damped OK especially compared to a lot of the land whales around at the time.

What did not impress me was Blue Wang dropping the price six months later to $3799, destroying the second hand value. My excuse for buying it was to teach SWMBO to ride on it but it never happened.

I would not buy another but I still think they are a nice looking thing. Lots of people have fucked about with them: 630cc and stuff which would be fun enough.

I owned an SRX-6 at one point some years later and that was a way better bike IMO.

Now I want a Royal Enfield. something about the one-lungers....

I wanted a gb500 a number of years ago til I sat on a gb400 and realised it had no guts and didn't even sound like a good thumper. Just bought myself an srx600 91 model with aftermarket exhaust and man this thing sounds great!!!

Still got he SP1? I look at them now and they are like ten k for a tidy one, 12k for a minter and I think "lot of classic bike for the coinage".

Sold it at 12 months old with 5k for 14k. Guess that was its second hand value.

Look at what RC45's are going for now. One day, SP1's will suddenly take off in value me thinks....

Don't think you can compare RC30's and 45's with SP1's/2's mate.
