Thread: Carnage Loop

  1. #91
Coro loop,Kaiaua loop,SH16,SH22 - have all become problem roads since they were sealed.I have ridden these roads for years, before they were sealed, after they were sealed, before KB,after KB.Sportsbike riders are an unadventuresome lot, they like perfect roads and don't like them to degenerate into a mess making them turn around and go back.So when word gets out about a nice road they can ride, they flock there. These roads were relatively unknown for many, many years, and even when they were sealed I saw few riders on them, now there are whole groups of riders doing them at speed, muscling cars off the road in their desire to get past and be the fastest in the group....or to just keep up.

    I've found other roads now.....

I'm with you Puddy. Tell it like it is. This is the first time I have heard about actually what did happen on that day and I was riding in that group.
Hard call to lay it out there but at least it might wake a few up. It was a terrible day all around.

Yep, the Coro loop is often called The Coro GP. One of my friends went on his first KB ride on a Coro loop and heaps turned out. Five bins on that one ride and he nearly decided to never go on a another KB ride again. He perservered and has been on many since.

Personally I love those roads and have done the loop around 25 times since getting back into bikes. With the tourists and nutters in cars, it makes for a very high risk run and yes, many motorists seem to swing wide on corners, cut them, end up on your side of the road, but I've had that nearly everywhere I have ridden.

We can never change the fact that riding is a high risk activity no matter how careful you are yourself. Trouble is on a bike, you make a single error on a long ride and it can be your last. You can ride completely perfectly as well but someone in a cage or camper van makes an error and it could be your last ride as well.
If the destination is more important than the journey you aint a biker.

And personally i dont like this knee down bravado, sure on a track but on a road? What is the point of the big bikes? I dont see myself going above a 600 for a long time.

Luckily that rider has the intelligence to ride their own ride, and to their own abilities.
    Good on them.
Take my hat off to them, I will.

Took the little scorpio around the loop this weekend. My first time up there. A great ride just best done at a speed that you can enjoy the scenery. Followed an Adventure bike from Whanga to Waihi in the wet. Just hung back and watched and learned how to ride safe in the wet. Whoever it was Thank You for being on the road at that time. Otherwise i think i may have stuggled to read the conditions.

    I understand.

Only ever had to attend one dead biker, about 4 years ago.

Looking through his visor - seeing hollow, dull eyes... blood pissing out nose and mouth...

Sure as fuck don't remember thinking that he looked all that peaceful or content.

I can still see his face, as those who have attended other bike/car accidents will their first no doubt.

Good on you Mark, and good luck on attempting to be the worlds first smiling corpse - you'll go down in history.

16 generally is a great road. Good seal, reasonably wide and something often over-looked great visibility with open flowing corners. All of this leading onto a nice tight little section towards the end with good grip.

Riders and drivers have died there and many licences lost, but its suitability as a fastish, safe road I believe is high, and certainly safer than the west coast of the coro loop [for instance].

Before I'm flamed no suggestion of 16 as a race track exists, but it's bad reputation is largely due to Police presence not danger level.

what has knee down got to do with big bikes?
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

    Back to the topic.

I've never had any troubles on the loop, but i respect that its a very technical piece of road, not one to be taken lightly or to play games on. It's a luuurvly road to cruise on. Im not concerned about speed, just about getting that perfectly smooth corner which gives me the grin

Just done the inland road Greta valley, Parnasas, Waiau, Kaikora, Greta valley for the third time in the past two weeks today,
It was a heap fun last wed with the CHCH mob,
and the sunday before that with the U-sisies club, Useless club if I was to comment on their poor riding habits,, downright dangerous
    Love that road.
Did the Lewis Pass Buller Westport Grey Hoki run on the way to Woodstock
    Awsome ride with fellow KB'ers

Have done the milford road at least 10 times from TeAnau and back ( only way you can do it anyway )

    Hast Pass! yummy

Now what was the name of the one up north , oh yeah, Takaka hill , cool

The trip out to french pass is interesting

Have I left any out? Probably

I want to see if these North Island roads match up with our south Island roads......and if the corro loop is all that it is made out to be then maybee I will add it to my list of good rides....but it better be good, as down here in the south we have some awfully good roads

Pace it not race it and you ride tomorrow as well!

    they do, it is

the main difference is traffic volume

on the thames side of the coromandel, be EXTREMELY wary of boats on trailers and 4WD's crossing the centreline

Just make sure you do it on a week day! Preferably not in any "holiday" season and you'll enjoy it. The traffic up here is chronic compared to down your ways. Mutter mutter..cant friggen wait to get back down there!

Pace is the way to go and when you do get to the Norf, let me know and I'll take you on some nice b roads around here.

My first KB ride was a Coro loop, but I had done it before, and there were a few bins. I can see how egos get outa control and away they go! Trying to be He-Man and prove what fantastic riders they are so I prefer riding by myself these days. Keep the hooning for the track!
