On a much more positive note to my last post I've used some technobable stuff to convert the google maps route information into a gpx file that can be loaded onto GPS units. Took a bit of mucking around but the file is attached.

Click on the attachment and save the file to your hard drive but change the extension from .doc to .gpx. You can then load the file onto your gps using Mapsource or similar. Also if you start up Google Earth then click file, open then change the file type box (to the right of the file name box at the bottom of the open window) too GPS (*.gpx *.loc *.mps) you can view the file.

There are four routes each with 200 points, as per the four google maps. These routes should load onto a Zumo (will only hold 200 points per route) and will easily go onto newer eTrex and GPSmap units. 200 points per route is probably a few to many but more is better right?

    Cheers R

I could buy this one so yours has a brother to keep it company!

or this one so there's an uncle around as well as the parents - the three DRBIGs could then surround the little DR to keep the wind chill off it!

Actually yours will look like a bit of a grown up teenager with the big Safari tank on!!!!

I have a spare, but I would like to see some references about your lack of farting/snoring before I offer you the room.

Well if the hand is recovered and I make the RRRR event then might try and have a look at it, if its still about, when we are over that direction on the Saturday nite! (Thought you'd like that colour!) Had a little quick ride of Joe's DR on Saturday - it felt good!

Hi has anybody any suggestions of where to stay friday night for the out of townwers. Cheers Pete.
Life shouldnt end at the grave well presented but rather, slide in sideways totally worn out yelling "shit that was a great ride!"

Recently a small group of us (6) did 450 kms between 9am and 6pm and that was a fastish pace with minimal stops and probably only 60% gravel (and easier roads than the ones you propose). I'm a little concerned you may find it's a long day with a bigger one the following on the 42 and Fishers.....

So, my 2c worth is to have an option for a short cut if it is needed, or an earlier start to take the pressure off.

Auckland to Otorohonga on friday....I will probably sort out some route for a midday departure from here if anyone wants a quick fang down the west coast.

maybe a good idea to take in account for slower rides, as roads are new to some people. just a thought......

This is what we often manage down here in the SI with reasonably fast-ish tracks and not a lot of stops with smallish groups, generally less than 10. The only time I've managed to complete the DB1k (2008) we also did it with an average of 50kph (20 hours) - again with minimal stops. The "fast guys" (yes they are fast by adv riding standards) average was about 58/60kph total trip average and that was with 5 stops and fair going for it.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, and while I have no experiance of the King Country re tightness of the road, I reckon that using 50kph then add a couple of hours cause of the different riding speeds, large group and distance i.e. 427 kms will be about 9 hours + 2 i.e about 11 hours for the trip. So with a 10am start this will mean into Taumarnui at about 9pm so you then need to allow an hour for tea i.e. a 12 hour ride so 10pm arrive into Taumarnui. Hopefully I'm being pessimistic and this is not going to be a big deal but from experiance with organising many adv rides and dealing with large groups you never move as fast as planned.

    Cheers R
Hey guys, all good points. I rode 2/3rds of the route in the rain on saturday and it took me 5 hours with short stops.
Reckon it should be do able by all in max of 10 hours

I have allowed for bailout points or roads to be skipped if we get too far behind time.

It would suit me to start the ride earlier than 10.00am but i was trying to allow enough time for those travelling on the saturday morning to get there on time.

The ideal end would be to arrive in taumarunui between 6-7pm.

What does everyone think, should we move the start time up to 9.00am

Still 1 bed and 1 matress / floor space available at my place for friday night

PS.......... Fast paced means not many latte stops
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time
