Sigh. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the guiltiest of all?

    OK. Think about this.

    1. When riding in breach of the law (yes many people do do it. The rest of you had best hurry up or you'll be late for church), it is very wise to attempt very hard to only breach ONE law at a time. This gives you a better chance of getting off, or at the least of NOT having the cop go over you with a fine tooth comb. So, if you have no rego, make sure your WoF is up to date, if you should have L plates fit them, ride like a cop was behind you - cos maybe he is. No WoF, keep your rego current (renew it the day before your last WoF expired) . But also, take into account that you may get caught. Like someone said, it's a risk assessment exercise. Done wisely it can save you a lot of money. But, if or when you get caught don't moa n about it. You did the math, accepted the rsik.

    2. If you do have to leave your rego for a significant time (more than three months) put it on exemption. In practice the penalty for getting caught riding it is no worse (and it's probably eaiser to spin a yarn about having spent the last three months fixing it up, just testing it out blah blah). And it means you don't get hit with the back rego when you do legalise it.

    3. Recognise that you now have a cop on the look out for you. See it from his point of view. He stops you once, minor technical breach, L plate and over 70. Probably if everything had been in order he'd have given you an avuncular warning and sent you on your way. But once he's stopped you , he finds - No WoF. Then - no Rego. Well, he thinks , this puppy doesn't seem to have the slightest respect for the law. I better teach him some. Then lo and behold, he sees you again. And you are STILL just as illegal. Say, what do you think he's going to do when he spots you next ? (And cops are VERY good at remembering people they want to remember). So, riding outside condition of licence - and a premediated example of it , not just a "caught out after 10pm". That's $400 and 25 demerits. Everytime he catches you. And , oh man, WILL he be looking for you.

    4. So, where is the logic in getting a bigger bike? It's going to cost you , both in initial cost , in maintainence (a 750 sprots bike will cost a LOT more to run than a Volty - if you can't afford tyres for a Volty, don't even contemplate what it would cost for a 750). And cost in fines when that cop catches. And he will. Even on a different bike he'll recognise you. Might even be sneaky enough to check what bike you own for a while. Yes they are that sneaky. BTW : I don't understand this, generally. Every time I see a thread from someone on a 250 complaining that they've crashed , or that they've been pinged for riding outside licence conditions, like as not their solution is "I'm going to get a big bike". Duh ? It does not compute. If you can't handle a 250 -and the fact that you crashed (not you Mr Metalor, this is a generic 'you') proves that point , then a bigger bike is just going to mean more painful crashes. And if the complaint is the cops picking on you, believe me they'll pick on you even worse, if you add another breach of conditions.

    5. Reality 101. When you are poor (be it as a student , or whatever) you CAN'T AFFORD a bike as a toy. You need to regard your bike as transport. And as cheap as possible. Certainly have some fun on it too, and it is indeed possible to have plenty of fun on a Volty. But the fancy sprots bike must wait until you are not poor.

Get your restricted. That'll get the L plate problem sorted. Get a WoF and some rego. Ride around a bit. See if you can find that cop! Then brown nose him for all you're worth. "Thank you so much for making me see how foolish I was - see I've got my restricted , WoF Rego. I now realise how out of line I was, and that my finances were no excuse. " Blah blah. Grovel. It works. I have a splendid line in self deprecating grovel, it's talked me out of many a ticket. Hopefully that'll get the cop off your back. Save the money a big bike would cost to keep the 250 at least vaguely legal.

BTW I don't see a worn tyre on a 250 as that big a deal- and rego is just a tax, I have NO moral compunctions about it all

Second the comment about riding BEHIND cops. I HATE a cop behind me, I'll turn off at the first opportunity.

And finally , was this by any chance a bikey cop. I ask only because last week I happened to come up behind a bikey cop industriously lane splitting. Well, thinks I , sauce, goose , gander, and tucked in behind him. He finally pulled in behind a group of three bikes, all riding in a lane (the traffic wasn't that heavy didn't need to lane split much, doing about 70 odd). And kept behind them, even when they changed lanes. And finally, reds and blues, and pulls one of them over - thought for a moment it was me. Reasin I wonder is because I thought at the time "Huh? Woz he done ? He wasn't speeding, didn't see him do anything wrong, clearly knew there was a cop there, signalling and stuff. Why ?"

Cheers man, that' s actually a very constructive post. Nah, he was driving a station wagon, was probably around 60 years old and he was a pom (I think).

Yea, the bike is my only transport, it's waaaaaaaay cheaper than the bus which is why I got it in the first place (was even cheaper to pay off the loan AND pay for gas than catching the bus into town).

After I've calmed down a bit, I'll just wait till I've finished uni before I get a bigger bike. Not after a sports bike, an M50 sounds like my cup of tea to be honest. Can still commute on it and cruise on the weekends

I was just fed up with shit, and have been wanting a bigger bike for a while and what happened this morning made me think "fuck it, if I'm gonna get fines I might aswell get a bigger bike anyway!"

Thanks again for the non-flaming post.

Feck - do you do burn outs to warm it up in the morning before your daily commute??

You`ll be alright mate , just knuckle down and sort the shit out.
(1)Get your bike up to scratch with the $$ you have and just live it for a while.
(2)Pay your fines off at $20-$30 a week.
    (3) Don`t post another thread like this again, at least for a little while.

    (4) Most important of all, Don`t Don`t invite people to say it to your face , because most will. Even the big "Fuckers" will

    Take it easy.

Learn well young fella, the second time a copper pulls you over for the same offense it is really very unlikely he will listen to your hard luck story about being broke. It didn't work the first time either. Life is NOT FAIR!

Yep, that's about the right time, I passed an older bike with 'volty' written on the side of the tank. The scooter is definitely red, if it was clean it would look a lot like my avatar.

Don't worry about all the abuse, I'm pretty sure you know you fucked up without everyone telling you. This is just 'kicking a man while he is down' KB style. "Hey guys there is a guy who got busted and fined $800" followed by "ooh, where's the thread - I gotta call him a dick so he'll feel even worse". It's a shame the cop couldn't have been a bit nicer and just pinged you for the WoF/Reg - $400 is plenty, who gives a fuck about the stupid 'L' plate anyway, it is hardly a safety issue.

sounds about right for a big bike - in the summer every litre of gas through the busa costs $1 in rear tyre - $1.30 if I add the front on. doesn't take long at 400 - 500kms/week

Actually, when I crashed into the back of someone else's 4wd, their insurance paid for it and I paid for the damage straight up, in cash.

I can't be fucked with this shit anymore, you guys all need to get off your high horses. I'm a decent dude and don't need shit from 'net warriors'.
