Lol... you could turn a cop busting a designated learner ride as an illegal gathering into such a soppy human interest news story so easily it'd almost be worth it for the publicity alone.

I can see the headline now

"Helen Clark will repay election spending by busting a learner bike ride"
Don't need to mate - I'll be there - Will tell you all about my day job on Sunday.

I can see a compromise though that will save everyone from embarassment - it will free up 4 units for true enforcement. All it would require is 2 police HP units - one as vanguard and one as rear guard. They could make themselves known to us at Botany BP - they could therefore protect us against a 130kph shunt from a 15 year old Learner in a 300bhp Skyline and could also ensure that the Learner group does not exceed 70kph AND SAVE VALUABLE TAXPAYERS MONEY.

Everyone wins - we can safely ride within the legal constraints (which we would have done anyway!) and they get to reduce the resource for this issue by 67%.

I should have gone into Politics instead of media eh?

Of course, one could try actually REQUSTING the cops to come along. To offer instruction and advice etc. Thus making them perversely certain that they should be somewhere else.

And of course, if you really ARE going to be legal, someone whould whisper to the plod that the learner ride is just a front for a big race, and they (the plod) need to get every car in Auckland out onto it. Then I shall tootle off in the exact opposite direction confident that no cops are going to be around to bother me.

Ms Crashe incidentally is designated as KB Offical Decoy.

Ixion, you're not talking about 'that' A-B race from Auckland to a Northern destination which left an AKL landmark at 2am this morning are you?

Just to re-iterate this is a Learner friendly ride - Maverick at the head me at the rear - we have every intention of keeping the ride legal and we will endeavour to encourage everyone in our group to ride legally and observe the conditions of their licences. Each rider is, however, responsible for obeying the law themselves.

Faster riders are welcome to meet us at BP Botany and then make their own way at their own pace to the lunch meet but the spirit of this ride is to encourage people on Learner and restricted licences to escape the confines of the city and busy traffic.

We won't get experienced unless we ride.

Police asistance would be greatly appreciated if it is offered - co-operation is more constructive than confrontation.

Looking at the weather today it could be a bit of a damp one tomorrow - I think Maverick's weather Genie could be letting us down.

This is not to say there will not be a KB learner friendly event on Sunday though.

There will be something for those brave souls that brave the elements but I will need to know numbers in advance due to the small size of the venue.

Meeting point remains Botany BP 9:30am regardless of weather. PM me if you need directions.

Great, I need someone to offset my environmentally unsound 2 stroke as I ride at 100kph to avoid getting killed, without an L plate to avoid getting pinged, revving it so my engine doesnt clog up, totally ignore old ladies, max out my student loan and use it on petrol, complain about the nannies in parliament, hope my lecturer forgets to mark my work and forget about all birthdays! We'll both have to make an effort to significantly reduce the amount of time we think about sex. Just remember the golden rule: think helen clark.

I think I might have to pass on the ride. With the police presence itll be all too easy to hit 71kph and get slapped with a breach of licence which would put my restricted test back. Bring on the 21st! As for the 70kph limit, Its absolute crap. Id be only too happy to wear the L plate of shame if they abolished the limit, 70kph is an inconvenience to other road users and unsafe for us.

If it's pissing down we'll be playing with a PS2 which doesn't make good video viewing I'm afraid.

No motorbike games unless someone brings 'em - the plan is to go for a ride on the bikes - resorting to PS2 only if weather is piss poor...and it seems to be clearing.

In the event that we call off due to weather only those who turn up prepared to ride will be invited to BBQ (this is primarily aimed at those having to make an effort to get to Botany from Whenuapai or North Shore etc.)

Anyone prepared to ride with us noobs is welcome at my house.
