walking down Elizabeth St in Melbourne last week, and spotted this bike just parked on the side of the road. Took a few happy snaps. Sorry for the shit photography: Bike was ridden a fair bit by the look, and its a period perfect late 60's cafe racer. It was parked outside the British bike shop (next to Mars Leathers). Heard it start up (second kick) and rushed out for a couple of words with the owner. An older gent ('60s) and he said something along the lines of it being the remains of his misspent youth. Hardly misspent IMO.

best bits for me were the sound, that motor, the big-ass drum brake, and the tail light.

Coolest bike I saw over there by far. (and that includes Eric Bana's 748RS Evoluzione Duc trackday toy).

Holy crap that is cool. Vincent motor (best looking motor ever?) looks pretty tight in that featherbed frame. Must've been a Triton for the upperclass?

Met a guy at Johnsonville one Saturday way back when. He'd just put the finishing touches to a Norvin that morning. He was a bit worried because he'd worn out a back tyre in his first afternoons riding. That sort of tyre wear was unusual in those days.

I hope the bike (and the guy) survived.

Pretty sure there is one locally that gets pulled out for classic events & the Magogs show. Not sure if it is at the Axemens show this weekend in Hawera but wouldn't be surprised.

You should try riding one of these wonderful machines.

I arrived in the UK in Feb 1978. I spent my last 1200 pounds on a bike from Goldblatt Motors on Goldhawk road.

A Norvin cafe racer.

They specialised in the Vincent marque and had about 20 of various models in the shop.

Try riding one of these things around a very busy city.

Just trying to find a gear to stay in was hard.

Take it out on a motorway and just go with the flow.

By first 1/4 of 1979 I was engaged to be married and the future missus thought that we didnt need a bike as well as her car so she persuaded me that we could use the money in much better ways.

SO I sold it for the same as I paid for it and she spent the money.

Its amazing what a standing prick will do to you.

In Melbourne too. I remember a profile I read: they made their money in heavy engineering for mining. Now they're spending it on motorbikes. Gotta love that.

even a Vincent basket case goes for $30k NZD (or at least the last one sold on tardme did)

Ive sometimes wondered about getting one of the single cylinder ones. they are less desirable and should thus be cheaper. But I only got as far as wondering.
